Rebuilding E36 M52 Vanos the "WRONG" way! No Re-timing needed! || E36 Turbo Build [Ep. 8]

- So I had this crazy idea on splitting the vanos unit in my E36 M52 while it was still on the head instead of pulling it completely. I don't have timing tools so I figured it was worth a shot. It was surprisingly spoiler alert a success! I know this isn't the 'proper' procedure but that's what makes this video interesting.

I came back to say thanks for this video. I have a working Vanos unit now. Saved me a lot of hassle and its good to experience shortcuts like these working flawlessly!
Haha awesome man! Quite a few people seem to be having success with this video!
Thank you very much brother I used your clever method and it worked! It is a bit more difficult with an engine in the car, but it is certainly possible Other BMW specialists can learn a lot from you The standard way involves dozens of videos, but this special easy way is your invention, thank you 👍🏻
Just did mine, used your video for every step of the way (even sanding the scratch marks from the vice grips). And all went smooth and it's now driving well. Thank you
Awesome man that's good to know!!
@Eddie Uchiha I didn't really have much, low power low down in the rpm. Changing it out shifted the power band down just a little and imo made it feel a bit smoother. I mostly did it as preventative maintenance though.
After 4 years this helped me allot i will try today
You are a legend! I have a bad vanos seal and did not want to touch the timing, but now i can do it! Thanks alot!
Thanks Bro!! Just did the seals today watching your video. I did not have a rattle. Went smooth as butter!! Thanks for posting this!!!!
Hello, thank you alot for that video. Your style to change the gaskets works very good. its a bit tricky to get the screws out inside the vanos but its doable. I let the lower screws inside when removing the cover of the vanos. It was working for a bmw e39 523i touring . Thank you alot for that nice idea. 😊
Great channel and great presentation. You're a natural born educator/entertainer. Really surprised that you don't have like a million subs.
I used your method to replace the vanos cover that I had unfortunately damaged while trying to replace the timing shaft sensor in my M52B28. It worked perfectly. Actually it was easier than I expected, even with the engine in the car. Great video man!
Awesome! Glad to hear!
Harikasın kardeşim senteye dokunmadan çözdün işi bravo
Thanks so much for this video, man. I followed your video step by step to replace my Vanos piston seal and the inner ring as well. Hope that once the rest of the car is all put together I will actually know what the car is SUPPOSED to drive like with a proper functioning VANOS!
Fantastic video...helped me to fix my vanos. Thanks man💪
I wonder if they made those two lower bolts longer on purpose, to allow for such a repair. Either way, you're an absolute legend for this! About to do mine 😊🤙
Bro im from the uk and I had to reach out and say you are so funny, Im watching all your e36 project content 1 by 1, so entertaining in a good way. Keep up the good work and good vibes bro 😉👊🏽
Thanks a bunch man! This is actually the right way. Beisan should update their instructions with it. I've just done it directly in my engine bay. Only removed the fan shroud. It's not hard to remove the bolts at all, just make sure not to drop them into the chain well or better plug it with a microtowel to avoid some gray hair. Used the ground socket on a small makita impact to undo the cap and then to tighten it. Press it tight against the cap, hold the piston with the other hand and it works like a charm both ways with no rounding or marring. It doesn't guarantee 30ft-lb but from what I can tell the cap can tolerate some error.
The Vanos unit comes off as a unit very easily. When you fit the new rattle ring and thrust washers from the kit sanding down the ring is required. This is also very easy and you can reduce the lateral play on the shaft very easily. I also was able to re install the unit without the special tool
Hope you staying safe wherever you are man, LA is burning right now, nothing but prayers your way 🙏🏽
Yeah I'm in Atlanta. People going crazy here too but I'm staying in the house
Great job! Thanks!
I did it youre way and it worked 😂 thanks man
just did mine praying everything is good! waiting to the morning to start it for the valve cover gasket silicone to dry
how much free spin did the gear have once replacing the ring? ive sanded mine down and it still wont spin once spect to 40nm
It spun when I turned it by hand but didn’t spin freely like a normal bearing would. I think it has to be broken in to spin freely. Haven’t had any problems since I rebuilt mine that I know of
Interesting approach - just don't drop that bottom nut! 😆
You could have used one of those strap-wrenches they use for oil filters to hold the piston in place while wrenching the flat 18 nut.
You sir are adventurous. I had to buy the timing tool for my e90 330i when I timed it 2 days ago. Best $100 spent. Cylinder is on and valve cover is buttoned up. Will assemble the rest by Wednesday when the rest of the parts arrive.
I figured worst case scenario I'd have to do it anyways if it failed. So why not try it for the people 😂
I like the video. Doubt I'll get an answer 4 yrs later. Would this work on a M50, while its still in the car?
it's very similiar. should work.
About to try this myself and wanted to ask how the hell were you not scared of the bolts falling down into the motor????? seems like its pretty easy to drop that 5th bolt into the abyss
Just ordered a new seal kit and rattle repair kit. Going to be doing this next week! Good shit with this video man, it helps a ton.
I'm glad! That's what I'm here for!
Any benefit for perfomance?
Props to you doing it this way. It was fun also. But... you can easlily remove the vanos without using cam tools. And it's way easy to work on it . Either way as people say : if t works it ain't stupid 💪💪💪
Yeah but putting it back in would still need re-timing correct?
@@itsBlack if you're careful and the cams don't move no . you cand just use a flat piece of metal across the top part of the back of the cams to check everything. as i said before: you can do it without timing tools. the vanos rebuilding part is just a little bit easyer :D . your way works too but ... with the engine in the car if you drop one of those 5 10mm bolts into the timing cover your're toast :D .
Ps : loved that laugh when you got it out. it was hilarious. keept it up !
Ah thanks for the info
Just finished.
Something wrong for me. Engine is still in timing but while i was reassembling the vanos and the vanos cover, i have clearly seen something moving anti-clockwise on the back side of the chain (intake CAM shaft).
It's hard for me to explain in english. Can i send you a picture to some email?
Now i am not going to reassembly the cover and need 3-4 beers to think and decide what to do. Ordering the timing tool or closing up and see if I destroy the engine
@@gnegneto i'm not an authority on it, but if your helical gear remained engaged in the engine at all times (we don't pull out, remember?) you should be fine. If anything moved, it must have rolled together with the rest of the train so everything is still in sync.
Interesting approach.
Great video. Awesome commentary. And funny too. Did one following your tutorial and it went ok. Keep putting these videos out.
Very instresting video but question how you can take out the bolt and later put in? :D I cant understand and you dont show.
Ive done everything exactly the same bro but at 18:10 mine keeps moving as before with the new parts inside, what have I missed and what should I do?
Keep up the great content man! I just found you from watching your slave cylinder replacement video as I’m having some major clutch issues I can’t seem to figure out 😂 you remind me of myself working on my e36! Much love from Australia 🇦🇺 your videos are educational and easy to watch ❤️
Thank you sir! I hope you get it worked out!
Thanks for the torque spec on the front bolt, spent a few hours looking
Always trying to spread as much info as I can lol
so glad to find this... will definitely do this today
Thanks guys it worked. Two questions, I got the cover off but my vanos piston is stucking its sliding at not will changing the ring solve that problem, also Im still nervous my timing will be good after this dont want to bend a valve
That’s a sub from me. Love the video
👌🏽😎🤙🏽 Good Job! 🙋🏽♂️Hi from P.R 👉🏽🇵🇷🔥🔥🔥
As I look at it, the seals can be changed as soon as you get the front cover off.
Update. Yes you can do it super easily
The “magnet” is a thrust bearing BYW.
thanks 4 da vid broo..
Great job
30lbs how much is theat in NM?
Hi from Italy!
Love your video! Super helpful, but i have to know, i do not need the timing chains, but do i need the vanos key and flywheel pin? Please answer before i blow my engine.
Nope I didn't use any of those. The vanos stays in the cam gear the whole time. You're just changing everything around it
@@itsBlack even the quick response, love you always more❤️
Best in town
Haha thank you
Can you do this while it’s still in the car
so… for some reason my bolt is cranked to shit and i stripped it. anyone know how to get the initial 18 mil bolt to come off after stripped ???
Oh yeaaah, I did it today, thank you for the wrong training
Awesome! Glad it worked out
If anyone else forgets the socket you can waste a socket by grinding one doen or cutting it. But very good video
Yeah meant to mention that. I was gonna try that myself but didn't have a belt sander
Thanks Bro !!
My guy🤙
Haha I just use a square edge square them up on the cams and head.
I cant get the shallow nut off. I have the beisan socket and have tried holding it with everything from oil filter wrenches to vise grips and at this point ive almost rounded the nut. Anyone else have this problem?
Did you try to budge it with an impact wrench?
@@joedoe2407 in the end an impact did the trick
🔥
Not another teen movie
Yesssss!!
I guess I'm the only one who is failing. The back piece of the 2 pieces we remove goes back too far so I'm not able to bolt the vanos unit to the cover because I can't fit the bolts behind the mounting plate because it goes too far in, touching the chain.
Yo im having the exact same issue, did you find a solution? This is ass since its my daily driver
@@ELY-qg2vn yes, turn the Crankshaft clockwise VERY SLOWLY, it will push the exhaust cam out. Just make sure you don't go to far or else will mess up timing. In the end, it didn't fix anything for me so I had to go in a second time and replace the whole until with a unit from Dr Vanos
@@ELY-qg2vn did it work
@@austincrs It will push the exhaust cam out or the intake cam? I needed the intake cam to come out. Since I couldnt get the bolts in i loctited some studs in from vanos cover with nuts on the camshaft side. Very bad idea but it got my car running and got me to work. Gonna pull it apart again and retry and if it doesnt work I will do it the correct way.
@@ELY-qg2vn my bad, intake.
I didn't understand why you can't remove the cover and loosen the nuts. Just don't pull out. Never pull out
2:59 We see lol
Lol 😂😂😂 never pull out bro
LmOoo that’s some G Shit. I see you for doing this but it’s more time consuming and frustrating and not ideal if your looking for perfection
