      Hi Ross, for ease of fishing I would use a Rio Switch chucker as my main under arm casting line, it will handle most of the sink tips and has excellent turn over even in a good wind. In reality you only need a few tips considering that I really only use two sizes myself and they are the Rio 6 ft salmon 2.6 ins and the 3.9 ins sink tips and an intermediate tip for summer low clear water. A trick that works for me is if its too fast or deep for my tips I add a small tungsten tube fly to the mix and with the Outbound or Switch chucker you will still get a nice turn over and more depth. A video is on the way soon regarding sink tips, lines, mending, tracking and placement etc.

    Been thinking about a switch rod been using Shakespeare oracle 14 for years looking switch some thing lighter for the summer. Please advise what rod you are using and line. Been watching your uploads and have subscribed

      Hi Neil, the switch rod I'm using is a home made rod because I prefer a 10ft rod and most of the switch rods were 11ft or more which defies the whole idea of a switch rod and 10ft rods are better from both single and double handed fishing. The shakespeare 8/9 switch is a good rod to start with, guideline, Zpey, Hardy, Loop all make nice switch rods but also at a nice price so its better to try and see if you need the rod first before you buy and anyway the shakespeare will always be a good spare rod. As for lines Rio switchchucker or the Barrio switch line are ideal and can throw any 10ft polyleaders. Also thanks for subscribing as I'm no longer answering unsubscribed comments. Tight lines Paul. p.s. Go to my facebook page MrKingfisher3 and direct message me if you have more questions.

    Thanks fo this. Is the sink tip always needed or in lower river conditions can I just attach the tippet directly to the floating fly line? Aso, how long do you usually make your tippets a.d what space between point fly and dropper if you use one?

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  4 роки тому

      Low water conditions can be hard especially for salmon fishing so stealth both in the water and on the water are important. Using an intermediate clear tip of about 10ft with a 6ft tippet of around 5kg is ideal giving nice presentation and hiding the flyline. You could also use a 10ft tapered leader as well and attach the same 6 ft 5kg tippet which would give more life to the fly than the intermediate tip. I normally allow 3 ft between point fly and dropper. A good fly for a dropper is a size 12 wickhams fancy which can catch you more fish in August and September than any shrimp pattern because salmon tend to hit the smaller flies then.

      I have good faith in the Shakespeare Skandi 13ft or 15ft for 9 and 10 lines , they're strong rods that can throw good heavy tips and tubes,

    Hi Paul really enjoy all your videos good explaining and gets through easily in my grey matter! I do not own a salmon fly rod but here in Devon where I fish on the river Reign the sound of a switch rod appeals to me! Paul on rod reel what would you recommend for here for me please ?
    All info greatly appreciated keep up the grand work and Tight Lines to you!! Moppy

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  3 роки тому

      There are many good switch rods available at the moment but if you just want to test the water the Shakespeare 8/9 switch is okay. Stay away from the line and buy a good dedicated floating switch line either Rio or Barrio that can carry 10ft tips poly leaders etc. You will be fishing probably only 3 tips in a season, an intermediate, 3ins per second sink and a 4ins per second sink rate. Rio make a good set of versileaders in those 10ft lengths and well tapered for good turnover.

    Paul, i got my hands on a OPST skagit head 400gr for my switch 16.5 feet and it was perfect. Also, getting rid of that annoying loop to loop from head to run can be done very easy with a tube weld or even without the tube.

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  5 років тому

      That's great hopefully you can put it to good use, just be careful about welds some lines take well but others can be easily damaged and will crack after a few sessions.

    Good video paul, Just a question what line do you use? Im using a Guideline multi switch with my Guideline lpxe switch.. I find it good but when wind comes the line doesn't have the power to cut through.

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  7 років тому +3

      That seems to be a common problem with most bespoke lines that are supposed to be designed for certain rods they can't cast the tips and are very lacklustre. I use a Rio Outbound fly line almost the same profile as the Rio Switch chucker, the outbound is just slightly lighter than the switch chucker so I can over arm cast smoothly and it can also put out most of the 6 ft sink tips (up to 7 ins sink rate) with ease. I have used the Switch chucker line and it can really throw most sink tips into any wind. Maybe a short Skagit will help you as well, you really only need this type of line for tight areas and heavy tips but it will cut through most winds carrying a sink tip. I will be putting up a video soon on fly lines and casting techniques to improve turnover and presentation.

    • @Fishing7776
      @Fishing7776 7 років тому

      MrKingfisher3 cheers Paul, I use the outbound on my 13fter 8/9, the switch rod is rated from 290-325 grains but most of the lines are above it, have you herd of the airflow rage lines ? There around that grain rate. Cheers

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  7 років тому +1

      I haven't used the Airflo rage lines but as for the line ratings most of them are off, even these days most rods are a half or even a full line weight under what they are rated for. I have put 5wt and 6wt lines on a 4wt rod and fished away with very little notice in the casting stroke. The only problem is when you start banging short heavy lines and tips on a switch rod then you will break the rod. The switch chucker is a fishing line, it will do the job... catch fish because it does what it says on the tin and that is cast most tips with ease into a wind and still give you great turnover. The Barrio lines for switch are supposed to be quite good as well and they are a full line as well i.e. running line straight to head. Lines will always be an issue, you just have to find the one that suits you and what you need it to do that's why I recommend the ones that I have used and worked for me.

    • @Fishing7776
      @Fishing7776 7 років тому

      Cheers paul, The I know lads who are fishing 420 grains on the same rod but on a 8/9 not a 7/8 so i might try 360/390 grain and see, I only fish inter tips 10ft on mine! Thing is though the grain ratings are for overhead not spey casting.. weird!

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  7 років тому

      I would change over to the 6 ft Rio intermediate salmon tip and use a flurocarbon tapered leader and you will find that it will cut through the wind better and get good depth with turnover. Most switch rod lines and rods are catered for 6 ft tips not the 10 ft that's why I recommend the Chucker as it designed for that and will carry 6 and 10 ft tips. I have used Rio tips and lines for over a decade and they are the best for fishing, when you can forget your casting issues you can really concentrate on the fishing and catch fish.

    What type of line do you use with your switch rod?

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  6 років тому

      Hi Oisin, it's a Rio outbound fly line the same profile as the AFS outbound but an older line. It's hard to get these lines anymore especially in 6/7 or 7/8 weight lines, they have the heads available but not the full lines.

      MrKingfisher3 I have a Oracle switch 7/8. What would match it?

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  6 років тому

      The 7/8 is a bit light for big salmon especially in the early season but great for grilse and summer salmon, the Switch chucker by Rio is ideal in 7/8 for your rod. It will cast with ease and throw most of the 6 foot Versi leaders / sinking polyleaders.

    hi , I'm think of getting an Oracle switch rod , but I'm unsure should I get a 6 7 or an 8 9. I fish the feale and laune
    what would you recommend

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  5 років тому

      Hi Timothy, the 8/9 switch is the safest option as the 6/7 is too light and this can be an issue with high water or fighting a good fish. You just don't have any backbone in the lighter rod especially if you are going to be using poly leaders. My rod is a 6 wt home made switch but it's only 10 ft in length giving it better strength and casting power. I had a 6/7 Oracle and broke the tip playing a good salmon so if it were me I'd get the 8/9 .

    • @timothyorourke895
      @timothyorourke895 5 років тому

      @@MrKingfisher3 I've heard about Shakespeares breaking , but then I was also told they are great rods ,,, I've seen heavy salmon played out on 6 wt trout rods,
      is there a difference in the carbon used I Oracle's ? compared to dear rods or are they all the same ?

    • @MrKingfisher3
      @MrKingfisher3  5 років тому +2

      At the end of the day you are the one buying the rod, if you know someone that has the 6/7 try it out for yourself. I don't know what carbon is in the Oracle 6/7 switch compared to more expensive rods but using the lighter rod has it's compromises ...nice for casting all day but when you really want to play a salmon fast and hard or use heavy poly leaders 5 /6/7 inches per second sink rate then the 8/9 is your rod. Remember going in under gunned will only give you a head ache when the pressure is on and you're playing a good fish in difficult circumstances.
