Thank you for the video and advice!! I picked up a Spey rod and was going into full meltdown trying to figure out how to set up my rig!! You really clarified how to do it easily and made it make sense. I’ve been traditional fly fishing for a few years now and I wanted to try stealhead/salmon season with a different approach and be able to work the river a little bit easier and not having to wade out into the big waters in Northern California and southern Oregon this fall and winter. Hopefully I have some good success with your advice!! Cheers!!
Thanks for vidéos Jay, you mentioned that you use a 5' leader on your sink tips, usually people recommend 2' or shorter so sinktip can get fly down, can you explain alittle more why you use longer leader/ tippet on your sinktips, thanks
A couple things with running a 5" to 6' leader off a sink tip. 1 - It would be illegal on the Salmon River as the fly would exceed the 4' from any added weight. 2 - With a leader that long the fly would riding higher then the tip. If you fish a swung fly properly the fish would see the fly first and not the tip.
Great question First the leader length is legal on the Salmon River it is the distance from split shot, A sink tip is considered a fly line. The fly Does dropped to the level of the sink when it comes under tension during the swing. I Have found even was swinging properly You need to keep the fly Away from the sink On the Salmon River Do to fishing pressure in clear water conditions
Great video Jay. I have a question relating to matching driver head to rod grain window. Do you include grain weight of tip AND the driver to the rod window? Also, In trying to understand the relationship between the tip and the skagit driver head, What grain window of driver would you expect to "drive" which tip? Like 300-400 = T-8, 400- 500= T11, 500- 600= T14?? I'm not sure if I'm asking the question right????? I'm assuming that there is a point that too small of a head won't lift too heavy a tip?? Can you help, if so, Thanks in advance!!
Thanks jay! Question: Those IMOW tips in like a T-11 size that is a mix of 7ft floating and 3ft sink, are they good mainly for just winter steelhead or do you use them for kings aswell? Like using it only when you know kings are behind a rock or structure or? Is that a good way to go and how long should your tippet be generally with a tip like that on the salmon river or the oak? Thanks!
A tip like that can't be very handy, Like a lot of things, It all depends. If the flies getting down it works. combination Are handy Especially fishing Shallow Fast water. As for leaders, Around here 4 to 6' depending. Slower clear water Longer the leader.

This question yes, Both driver head and tip count.
Is hard to get a Driver head to work for all the tips. i go in The middle of tip.
