From Wikipedia:
The Goethals Bridge (/ˈɡɒθəlz/) is the name of a pair of cable-stayed bridge spans connecting Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Staten Island, New York, in the United States. The spans cross a strait known as Arthur Kill, and replaced a cantilever bridge span built in 1928. The bridge is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The original cantilever span was one of the first structures built by the Port Authority. The New Jersey side is about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Newark Liberty International Airport. The bridge was grandfathered into Interstate 278, and named for Major General George Washington Goethals, who supervised construction of the Panama Canal and was the first consulting engineer of the Port Authority.
In 2013, two new cable-stayed crossings, running parallel to the old cantilever bridge and replacing it, were approved. The new eastbound span opened on June 10, 2017, at which time the original span was closed. The old cantilever span was dismantled in January 2018 and the new westbound span opened on May 21, 2018.
I remember going over the old cantilever bridge as a kid and driving it myself maybe once. Until I went over this cable stay bridge in August 2021, I didn't even know they built a replacement.
I remember 😄👍🏽those day's!
The old one was sketch 😂😂 this SO much better
Thanks for the ride over the new safe bridge.
Goethels Bridge construction finally done I see
Nice drive across the goethals Bridge
Are they gonna redo the Outer Bridge Crossing too?
I commute over the bridge by bicycle. The bike lane is to the far right on the Westbound span. Still looking for the best route from both NJ & NY but it sure beats going to truck Route 1/9 and going down to the Bayonne bridge to and from Staten Island. Much shorter too. Now to find the most bike friendly route to the Ferry from the Goethals. I’m still working on that. While the bridges were under construction my only way to NYC was Path, a ferry or going a zillion miles out of the way to the GW.

😂 I like all bridges
So that's why it was closed alot in 2006
Another rickety old bridge I've never seen in the daytime. EDIT: Except going the other way jammed packed with vehicles.
Formerly a rickety old bridge.. now a nice cable stay bridge. Still leads to the SI expressway
@@JimAllen-Persona Nice. Last time I went over it at 3 am in the morning was in 2011.
@@joewenzel5142 Probably the only time with no traffic..
@@JimAllen-Persona I hate NYC traffic so always left Long Island at 2:30 am to beat it but then I just catch the traffic near Philadelphia. I couldn't win.
@@joewenzel5142 had the same experience,
we arrive there in 4 in the morning, so we don't catch morning traffic and be stuck on one stretch of the highway for 2 hours
