They have their uses. Generally people don't use them, because they have weaknesses against blunt and cutting dmg. So he gets obliterated by most tier 1 units of all clans. Especially now tho, after the 1.58 patch the chemist is used more often, because he is your go to unit if you want to siege your enemy early. I mostly use him in 2v2's or 3v3's.

Question, what does peasant huts do? DO THEY INCREASE peasant spawn? Or increase food and water storage?
