    Thanks for making the video. I changed the fuel pump in my '65 Landau a few years ago, and like you, went from the bottom. I can't exactly remember, but I think I also removed the oil filter adapter (which the filter attaches to) to get even more clearance to the pump's mounting bolts (this also requires removing the sending unit and electrical leads.) It worked good.
    The other problem I ran into was a serious one: one of the threaded holes for the pump mounting bolts had beeen cross threaded from a previous installation gone bad...quite frustrating, but it explained why one of the fuel pump bolts was loose during removal. The correct way to address this would to remove the engine from the car and retap the hole with a larger thread; removing the engine is necessary because of the very limited clearances, as you can see from this video. But I was NOT going to remove the engine. I dealt with this by torquing the good bolt in the good mounting hole to the proper tightness, and putting many thick strands of copper wire in the bad hole and DOUSING the bad hole and bolt with lots of Loc-Tite, then I tightened the bolt in that hole. I was able to get the bolt in the bad hole to about 2/3 of the torque setting that is was supposed to be, but that's been enough to keep the pump secure all of this time. Should this mounting technique ever fail, I will abandon the mechanical pump in place and put in an electric fuel pump.

      Removing the ps pump was an option, but would have created more headaches. Removing the oil filter frees up so much space to get to the fuel pump. Thank you for watching my video.

    Got a 64 TBird from my wife's Uncle a couple weeks ago. Was supposedly in "show" condition. Ok, so it started and I drove it about 8 or 9 miles to where I had the car trailer. Brakes were mushy so I had to be super careful. I picked it up in Florida and had to bring it back to South Carolina. That went ok except for the drive through Atlanta. What a nightmare it is driving through Atlanta!!!!! Anyway got home and started to get the car off the trailer. It started and when I hit the off ramp I HAD NO BRAKES AT ALL!!! Car was heading towards the lake...fast! Luckily I had a spot to turn her and stopped it 4 ft from hitting my RV! Ok so I massaged the emergency brake to get her where I was gonna park her. Then shut her off and got a drink. An adult beverage. My heart was racing cause if I had of scratched that car my wife would have...well I can only imagine! Anyway so I go out to start her a couple days later and nope...won't start. I sprayed some starter fluid in the carb and she runs for a second or so. Did this til the battery died so I had to charge up the battery and did this a couple more times. Starts and dies. So I messed around and figure the carb is getting no fuel. Took off the fuel line and cranked her over. Nope. No fuel. So I'm guessing (really! Guessing) that the fuel pump is bad. Now I'm looking at how to get to that fuel pump and get it off. WOW! Who designed this?!!!? I jacked her up and got under. Ok, so I think I can get it out from the bottom. Well, we did but it took 3 hours! Multiple extensions and a whole lot of knuckle busting! So my new replacement fuel pump came in today. I'm dreading putting that thing on!! Really don't know how I'm gonna get it back in place to get those 2 bolts back in. Hopefully patience and luck will prevail. But I did like your video. And yep, the car LOOKS in "show" condition but I FOUND ALL KINDS OF THINGS UNDERNEATH that will keep me busy for a LONG TIME! Wish I had a lift!

      Thank for watching my video, these old birds will test your patience every time. I picked up mine from a gentleman that had it for sale on Facebook Market Place and the price was good around the beginning of 2018. The car suffered from lack of maintenance. My biggest issues have been fuel starvation, I have rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the entire fuel lines from back to front. Replaced the fuel pump and the sending unit and continue to have fuel starvation every few weeks. I decided pump all the gas out of the gas tank and started to see pieces of rust come out of the tank, waiting on a new gas tank to arrive. Don’t give up on the Thunderbird, they are a lot of fun when they run right. Good luck and if I can be of any help, feel free to reach out on my Instagram account @flperformancegarage.

    Good video. Wondering if you could make a video of your air conditioning compressor and where all the wires go to it. I have a 59 Thunderbird it looks like the same compressor in my car that you have yours but the wires are not hooked up and I really don't know where they all go to. Subscribed and liked

      I am planning on changing the timing chain soon and will cover the air compressor removal and the AC lines. Currently I am refreshing the 2011 Tahoe, just released the new video this morning.

    When you put the new pump and how did you make sure you were sitting on the rite side of the cam? As I put mine in which didn’t line up exactly and ended up turning the engine by hand a little until it fit, but now that I have it in I’m kind of wondering if I set it right? Thanks

      I have always installed the new pump with the shaft slightly pointed down and would feel that the shaft was under the cam gear for the pump before setting the bolts in. It’s difficult to get to if installing from underneath, but it saves so much time on not having to reinstall the power steering pump and belts. Thank you for watching the videos.

      Thanks I installed it from underneath by removing the oil filll neck from the block which made it a little easier to get to even though it was still a bull trying to get the nuts to start which I did point down as I put it in after turning the engine by hand a little, so I guess it should be OK, I hope.

    How did you get the car up on the ramps before changing the pump?

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  2 роки тому

      It wasn't easy to drive it up on the ramps, so I cheated a little and used a jack and lifted on the K-member of the car and placed the ramps under the tires. I did back the car off the ramps.

    It's not fun but can be done

      It probably would have been faster removing the power steering pump, but given the age of the vehicle and the lack of parts in stock, I tried from underneath the pump and it did take longer, but it it went in without a problem. Thank you for viewing my video.

    Oh, also, the brakes were mushy cause there was NO brake fluid in the reservoir!
