Anybody notice that since Mike and I started hanging out he wanted to bring out my “dark side”....but in actuality he’s just started using nunchucks and breaking boards?
Hahahaha
Shhhh if this keeps going he'll be wearing a GI in no time.
Cross contamination works both ways ;)
Good observation, Sesnei : D
6 more months and he will explain why Kata is great for self defense and give a sidekick tutorial :D
Sometimes this channel is Jackass with martial arts and, admittedly, these are some of the most entertaining episodes.
I take the comparison as a compliment!
Hey!! Someone call me up to the party!! What going on kids???

He needs to keep at it and focus on that as a potential career option - he’s killer for his age and it’s such a big industry potential!
He really does.

To the surprise of no one, breaking shit is really fun.
super fun
Except when the thing you're breaking is your metatarsal joint, leading to osteoarthritis, because having postured up ready, knowing your own body mechanics, a more senior martial artist on the judging panel has you move to a position that doesn't really work for you, but you do it anyway, because surely he knows best. But dons right, ignoring stupid advice, yes, breaking can be fun.
@@anftrew3775 If you break your metatarsal joint, you have very soft joints and worse conditioning! If you want to keep practicing breaking stuff bare handed you need to condition your body. A lot of people never condition, start trying to break boards, bricks etc and then blame the method without ever doing push ups on their fists, start small by doing light strikes on solid objects to incrementally condition the skin, bone and nerve endings, striking sand and into small pebbles, bare hand/foot strikes on the heavy bag etc.
There's a method to breaking things just like when you do squat lifting you don't jump right into the maximum weights, break your back or knees and then blame the exercise for your improper and ignorant approach to training.

After this video I realized how perfect board breaking is to develop that "punch through the target", those bad intentions. We should see more of this in modern combat sports/martial arts.
I think that it is worth visiting every so often.
When holding boards, keep your thumbs in and head turned away, like Mike does. Do not put your thumbs on the board or hold the board in front of your face like Cliff does.
I am an excellent board holder!

I have used Chi in the streets so don't knock it. :P
Hey man its possible. You just gotta meditate and open all your chakras in order to become one with the universe and gain infinite amount of power. Boxing, kicking, rolling, none of that matters in face of true chi power.
From a woodworker and martial artist love this channel. The boards warp from drying out it's still just as strong.
Typical excuse, blame the board holder. Ah the days of TMA...
Come on now it's easy to see!
Breaking is really great for reassuring your technique and making sure you are hitting correctly on impact. You can see the fist and forearm moving on a straight line through the board each time there is a break. If you watch Cliff's one inch punch, he starts with his forearm fairly straight, and as the punch happens, it straightens out completely where as Mike's first 2, his wrist is really bent. When he does break it, you can see he started with his forearm and wrist straighter. This is also why Cliff's uppercut didn't go but Mike's did.
I think these boards (half inch thick?) would translate well to someones ribs.
Thank you, Mike.
but also keep in mind ribs have skin and muscle on top of it and a bunch of flesh and organs behind it and not braced to be easily broken and also have a little more give. maybe if it was just taped/tied to a dummy or punching bag
oh also 1:01 shows it's a 1inch thick board
Ribs are also harder to break because they are a bit flexible
No they don't translate. It depends on how you hit it/ how you transfer force, how you hold it, what kind of wood it is. Wood can be from soft to bone hard. If you want a board to translate then find some hard wood and hold the striations horizontally
I know that if someone hit me as hard as you have to hit these, I would say ow.
Idk how accurate it is, but I believe I was told if you break 3-4 boards (at once) that roughly translates to the force needed to break a rib or smaller bone. As stated above tho, your bones are covered in layers of skin, fat, muscle. But, general idea is there.
Knock this shit off, I’m trying to get my applications in for graduate school and I keep binge watching your episodes! Love your content, keep it up 👍

Training with the makiwara on a regular basis is something beneficial that most MMA guys (the ones I know) never do.
I'm loving that you're doing this outside a clinic called BRAIN OPTIMIZATION.
Y'all were brave on a lot of those strikes like the uppercuts and hooks.
I think a lot of martial artists and even sport fighters get a little jaded with the gloves. It's tough to land those two knuckles perfectly on a human target without jacking up your hand/wrist.
I mean... we suffered for this lol... all of us were a little soft from quarantine.
One time i sadly broke 4 bones in the face of a guy who attacked me. One time another guy attacked and i thought of that and hit him in the forehead. He was knocked out cold but my right middle hand bone was partially fractured. I'm Swiss so that stuff happens here too 🤣

Mike NORRIS makes the earth move when he does push ups
When Mike was standing on the chair, i got a little nervous about him getting hit in the groin. The other gentleman obviously knew what he was doing but it made me worry for a second LOL
Enough wood for a nice BBQ.
The original plan was to use the wood to make a bonfire and i burn my kuk sool won black belt but cliff told me not to do that
Icy Mike. I was talking with my instructor the other day about something similar to this. I was told the biggest difference between breaking boards and hitting some one is that the person is actively moving. And when we do breaking we are standing solid and the board is solid in place. But. It definitely is a confidence booster.
Okay, but it's not like a heavy bag is moving when you hit it. Not every single technique or drill has to involve a resisting opponent.
Isn't that why there's the bit with the loosely held board? To sort of simulate that people move with the impact if you hit them?

One of the most entertaining videos I have watched so far. I'll go buy some of those, carry 1-2 in my backpack, and break one instead of smoking a cigarette when I'm irritated.
I have a bit of a TMA background from my youth but at my academy we teach FMA, BJJ, and Thai Boxing. That said, we break boards with kids regularly. Adult program does once in a while for shits and giggles. The adults have just as much fun smashing pine boards as the kids do. Good times 🤘
Uhhh you teach alchemy with the martial arts??
I love this. Icy Mike is one of the only self-defence coaches that shows legit traditional martial arts skills just because it's fun.
Breaking just makes you happy.
#1 have fun
In the 1 inch punch the first guy had it easier. According to physics I learnt im college, you maximize the force by being perpendicular. The first guy had the plank completely perpendicular to his elbow. You had it in a 45 degree angle or something like that. So he could apply all his force and you only apply about 1/√2 of your force
I ducking love this channel. The opposite of my hatred for spellcheck that won’t let me spell fuck.
Keep rolling man your stuff is always fresh and fun.
Mike's 1" punch doesn't count. He weakened the board for the second time :P

He usually films all their videos. He's definitely very good and could make a career of it if he so chooses.
4:40 Hello, neighbor! In my old TKD school, we did board breaks for all of the belt tests: the 'trick' is to imagine the board being about 3 inches behind where it actually is (and have a good snap on your punch or kick), and then it's like punching paper.
This video brought back some memories, for sure. I've never done the run-ups, 'cause Ricky don't fly, but I've done all the other breaks at various times, including tossing the boards in the air and breaking them mid flight.
Your description of board breaking, it's not so much power as it is accuracy and confidence, is spot on the mark. The first few breaks I tried, I was scared and nervous, but after my first couple of breaks, I realized how... EASY it was. So yeah, kind of like a party trick.
Good video, and I think you have a point about putting some sort of breaking regimen in with self defense/combat arts.
I am going to make it part of our program... like maybe once or twice a year.
@@hard2hurt Back when I was a dojo regular, breaking was a regular part of our regimen. We'd do standard boards around tournament time, but for daily or weekly practice, we had a bunch of those rebreakable boards. That could be a cost effective measure if you want to incorporate breaking more often.
I was watching ramsey dewey board breaking vids yesterday.
I was going to make this video one weekend and then he released one the day before we were going to film... like last year sometimes, so we put it back in the to-do list to visit later.
4:42 !!! “Scuse me idiots who I walk past every day doing karate in the parking lot”
Breaking is a fun way to work techniques with accuracy. Just as with Fight Choreography, the Holder in Board Breaking (like the person taking most of the hits in FC) does the majority of the work, particularly when the Striker is pretty skilled.
Speaking of speed breaks, my favorite is to throw the board up and punch it out of the air... no holder needed!

@IcyMikeP I liked the tip about NOT making a fist when using an elbow strike! Good Shit Mike!

Maybe some of the most fun we've had making them.
Once again demonstrating why you are my favorite UA-camr.
I see Cliff rocking a Devine Jiujitsu shirt. Trained there when I was working down at FLETC for a few months. Great school, awesome training.
This channel reminds me of me and my fight instructor. Trained for almost two decades, lots of theory and practice. Love it.
Haha, I know this is old but I love it!! Started breaking boards (only for rank tests though) when I was a teenager, but I remember breaking my first brick (I was an adult by then)....bought straight from Home Depot (concrete paver actually, I think about 1.5 inches thick). It was the scariest part of my 1st degree black belt test....but when it came down to it, it was the easiest part. The break comes at the end of the test and I told myself the only thing standing between me and my black belt (after MANY, MANY years of training) was this brick and either it would break or my hand would. Did a full punch through the brick. Now I can break multiple bricks....lol
Same for me. Tang So Do (but it was called Taekwondo.) 1st dan red belt (just below black) one brick with chop then one brick with punch. No biggie!
Cant wait to be reminded of my karate past...
Yeah we way down memory lane
@@hard2hurt ooh I do wish youd wrapped your knuckles for this, great vid mate!
@@5THR33S part of the point is to not wrap your hands. It helps reflect that not only is the power there, the technique is proper too. Same as after you get used to breaking a single board, the next step is to add boards.
Nice! Definitely a good to test whether you are following through! We hit wooden staves all the time to test staff strikes. It's good to check alignment and accuracy.
Yo the pride on Mike's face when Cliff makes the 1" punch.
I am glad to see some MMA guys breaking boards. If you use real pine, there is no party trick - you need power. However, when you do a supported hold like you see here, bigger and stronger guys can break the boards without having to demonstrate perfect technique and power. Once you get to the point where you can use a punch to break a board in a supported hold, remove the second hand of support. Hold the board with two fingers and then use your punching and kicking techniques to break it. I promise that if you can break a suspended pine board with a punch, you can do some real damage to a person with that technique. Then, take it one step further and hold the board in your left, toss it up a little and break it with your right while it is falling. That is an unsuspended break and it is one of the hardest demonstrations of power, speed and accuracy you do with your hand. I love board breaking and I want to thank you guys for promoting it in such a fun way!
From a school that does a lot of breaking and continuously held the title in SKIL and NBL sport karate associations of #1 breaking school on the East coast, board breaking is such a misunderstood and underutilized training tool you seriously hit the nail on the head Mike amazing video!!! Just because the board doesn't hit back doesn't mean it's not an effective training tool!!!
For my belt promo last month, everyone but the green belt did a hammerfist w/ 3-4 boards. One dude did it but only managed to break the bottom board. Really surprised me. But the green belt did a downward punch, pulled his punch, and broke all the board just touching them. We were screaming! Both dudes are the same or twice the size of Clif.
I like how they make breakaway boards, that you can reuse; that way you don’t need to keep buying lumber. They make varying degrees of difficulty
Man me and my gal been loving these videos. Very likeable fellas in this bunch.
Breaking one of those boards is a good method to experience what it takes to actually drive a punch through. Which is an important lesson for every martial artist. Whatever martial art you do, at some point there is nothing wrong with testing yourself on a board.
Late in but, this is good stuff. It doesn't sub for experience but, it builds Hella confidence.
The 1-inch punch on the boards to me was like the equivalent of a traditional martial artist saying "grab my wrist no my other wrist"
You can break it with your beard
With his chin...Next test: how hard is your chin.
chinbutt?
I think one of the best thing breaking boards is for is teaching people how to follow through with a punch. Cuz if you pull back at the last second you won't break the board and hurt yourself but if you follow through you break the board and it doesn't hurt as much
A couple of times Mike talks about the grain of the board, but then holds the board against the grain. This makes the break harder. Think about the contact points between your hand and the board as one line. Then hold the grain of the wood parallel to that. For example, if you are throwing a vertical jab, then the grain should be vertical. If you are throwing a jab and rolling it over (like a karate punch) then the grain should be horizontal. Those boards between 6 and 7 minutes were all held the harder way, against the grain.
Looks like you guys had a blast. Breaking boards is always fun! I teach at a school where it is part of our curriculum for every belt. It really is a great confidence builder, especially for the kids.
Board breaking was one of my favourite things in when I was doing TKD. Good test is to break the board without being braced. Someone just holds the corner between finger and thumb. Have to hit very hard then.
Board breaking IS a good tool to demonstrate power, technique, and accuracy. The re-breakable plastic boards are especially good for that purpose (not only does it prevent you from buying lumber on the daily, but they are in some ways harder to break than wood)
We were always told that if you can break two pine boards, that's enough force to potentially break someone's ribs. A single board break would be like breaking someone's nose.
Breaking works technique and distance as well - if you're too far away, obviously you miss. If you're too close you typically won't break as you don't have the room to generate power and execute proper technique.
January of this year I tested for my 4th degree black in TKD - part of the test was a power break, as we did light contact sparring without pads - we utilized pads, heavy bags and breaking to demonstrate and practice full power strikes. For that test I had to break six pine boards with a kick and 4 with a strike. While I've done that strike using a punch before - that HURTs the hand and I've broken my knuckles doing it. I've done it with a palm strike and a knife hand strike, but for the test I went for an elbow strike and a side kick. If you want to know how powerful your technique is without hurting your training partner, breaking boards can be a good test of that. Not everything in traditional martial arts is bullshido or useless, but so many "modern" martial artists look down upon anything TMA practitioners do, because there is a lot of bullshit they teach.
I miss board breaking. It was so much fun
I spent SO many hours as a kid playing with boards. The holy grail was a speed break, striking with the same hand that was holding the board. It's how I learned to start the strike from the ground up.
Interesting how a proper headbutt is similar to headers in football, and how the 1" punch is real. Nice episode.
Ed parker talked about the use of breaking as a way of demonstrating that you can generate enough force to break bones if you wanted to
Impressed on how you kept breaking board after board, that gotta hurt! I'd wonder how you knuckles would feel doing that trickery the next morning after all the swelling! Your board break kick after rebounding off the wall was a mic drop moment, very cool especially for your age.
Okay but Maddox is my favourite part of this video, his commentary is on point
He has become very astute
in the 70's we broke lots of boards to rank up in belts, even bricks. we used 1x12's cut square. but first we did conditioning, knuckle pushups, punching bags with bare hands, and thousands of strikes on a makiwara. now days you don't see to much bare handed striking. I still have callouses on my first two knuckles and can beat a heavy bag all day long without bleeding. most people I've seen try it take off a layer of skin on the first hit.
I’m a big fan of board breaking. I started doing power breaking, and I tell you that hurts if you fail or succeed. Breaking teaches confidence, accuracy, speed, technique, and follow through. Especially when you got 7 or 8 boards no spacers.
The dojo I go to does it...we actually have to break boards with the strikes and kicks ,that we’re learning for our next belt test. And we have to compete a couple times a year
When we did breaking we would buy a 1x12 pine and cut it into 8" pieces.
For the kids 1st test to orange belt we started with running side kicks. Adults going to orange would do a side kick, then place one half tipped onto the edge of the other half on the floor and do a knife hand to make 3 pieces.
For our black belt test we did a twinfoot kick (jump straight up, break one board with each foot in the air).
Another favorite (don't remember which belt, blue or purple maybe) was the backspin (turning hook) held with one hand (for adults, kids got 2). Most impressive was when you knocked the center out, the bottom dropped straight to the floor, and the middle broke against the wall.
13:51
Yeah, that's what happens when you punch with your pinky knuckle. 😬 You scooped up big time.
I was literally gonna comment 1 inch punch from killbill 2 and you guys beat me to it
Your channel is a lot of fun. Now I wanna break boards. Haven't done so since I was in taekwondo yrs ago.
I had a karate grading during the social distancing. So instead of sparing I had an assault course with a doxen half inch boards. I didn't see the set up. I had to enter the dojo follow the path and its them all. With a verity of punches and kicks. Ending with a stack of 5 boards between two chairs
"It doesn't hurt when it breaks, it hurts when it doesn't break" - that is so true it's not even funny. We use those re-breakable boards and the thicker ones tend to hurt me more than I hurt them.
So much fun watching you guys! Take care.
Mike loving the use of Paddy's hard to hurt song💪👍
What's cool to see is how the three guys trust each other. (And the idea of burning a lot of calories just by existing!)
14:35
Two problems at 14:35:
1. Holder gets pushed back. Usually, his upper body leaning back until Mike corrects it. 2. Mike struck the board slightly upward, lifting the board up.
You get a friend to put on armour and punch them very hard
Oh right of course
We broke boards all the time in TKD (punches and kicks). its a great way to check your technique, aim "behind" the target and get your body use to hitting something hard (unlike a bag). Things like skulls, cheeks bones, teeth, ribs ect are harder than a bag, dont find out your technique sucks when you break your hand in an actual fight.
This was cool to see. I need to start training again. My best years ago was four of those boards with a side kick. And two with a punch. Been a long time I was a kid but thinking about starting again.
4:41 “sup baby you wanna learn to break boards?” *doesnt even look at Mike*
Fun fact, you know those metal paper towel dispensers in bathrooms? I was having a rage episode and caved one of those in at a quick trip. Nice boom sound, awkward stares once walking out of the bathroom.
My green belt test in kenpo.. I went through a 2 inch 12x12 inch board with a fist freshly cut and time to condition the board from its moisture. I gone through bricks 2 at once at that time with a fist.. The 2 inch board was the hardest thing I ever went through fractured my knuckle and realized if I didn't break it with the force I put in it I would of destroyed my hand or wrist..
I love your videos. You always have kids and friends in them. Your a really great guy.
Ya'll need more vids like this ;D It is about the confidence thing in traditional martial arts but seriously though you gotta have the intention of penetration through the target. So many folks who mess around with self defense strikes don't get this and their had or foot stops AT the target rather than behind it.
Power breaking is a great test! For my 1st and 2nd degree black belt test we would do breaks with 3 boards at once for stuff like backkick, sidekick, hammerfist, forearm/elbow. Definitely lets you know if you have power or not.
i love how in your intro monologue your two partners there start getting more and more apprehensive as you go on, like Oh what the F are we doing today
9:35
Okay. That was dope.
Fun video, board breaks can be a good training tool. He did move on your 1 inch punch. Work up to double boards and multiple targets. Ever use a makawara board like a speed bag? Good practice for targeting and building resistance for things like board breaks.
Absolutely its beneficial. We do it all the time in my program
I think power breaking is underrated. It is fun and trains you to follow through. Especially when you have guys who can break 5 boards with an elbow or hammer fist. No cheating with spacing between the boards!
Finally a video that I agree with everything you said.
I saw "Lets Bring Back Breaking" and was all excited about a weaponized breakdancing video.
