This GMC Terrain should not have been totaled but it was and now it's mine

  • If you missed out on the purchase of the last low mile GMC Terrain I rebuilt, here is another chance. It is another 2017 but this one is an SLE. It does have some options the Denali was missing like the navigation and the sunroof, as well as pearl white paint, AWD and a V6. The damage is minimal and this should be a quick job. Today we will make it drivable and get started on the bodywork. There is some previous work that does not meet my standards and some damage from the auction so we will have to fix that as well.

    When I saw the relatively minor damage on this Terrain that was totalled, I thought you must have moved to Australia. This is the sort of damage that gets vehicles totalled here in Australia with a Parts Title (Statutory write-off). You really had a big win with this one. You should have it done in no time. You'll almost spend more time on the service than the repairs. Looking forward to the next video. All the best from Queensland Australia

    • @alexandermccarthy
      @alexandermccarthy 2 роки тому +2

      Australia has the most ridiculous laws regarding statutory write-off.
      I get that we don't want unroadworthy shit boxes on the road, but minor damage like this is obviously repairable.

      In Australia, government goons attend car shows and make note of the license plates on all of the “not stock” vehicles... Then their registered owners get noticed in the mail to report for “inspection” or face a fine... a big one.

    • @erikv86
      @erikv86 2 роки тому

      Not sure about Qld but in SA this would fall under Repairable unless there was major structural damage on 2 or more locations. Its usually repaired here unless it was cheaper to write off for the insurance company. Probably more relaxed write off laws here.

    • @slasher9883
      @slasher9883 2 роки тому

      This car probably would have been classed a repairable write-off here in Victoria, so theoretically it could be repaired and re-registered, but even then the government makes it as diffucult as they can to put it back on the road. Nowadays in VIC you need an EPA licence to buy a stat-writeoff vehicle from auction, which means a hobbyist can't even buy a parts car from auction any more. Reality is the govt doesn't want any damaged car back on the road so make it as hard and expensive as they can. You can thank the dodgy backyarders and stolen car rebirthers for that.

    It could well have been a dealer promotion car, as manufacturers tend to bolt all the extras on a base model just to show what is available then sold as an ex demo car.

    Love the video's. I purchased a Terrain from a dealership that was involved in an unreported accident, clean car fax. Head lights, wiring for head lights, and seat belts needed replaced due to faulty repair work. Among other things. I decided to go for a newer vehicle, with lower miles, and higher price tag. The dealership also admitted the vehicle shouldn't have been sold in that condition and gave me a deal on the newer ride.

    A friend bought a new 2003 GMC denali with the rear steer option, sure made it easy to position a 24ft race car trailer at the track, at low speed the rear wheels turned in the opposite direction from the front, at normal driving the rear turned in the same direction as the front, never had any trouble with the rear steer.

    Looks like an SLE-2 and someone took every option available.
    Either was a special order that someone backed out on or was better to custom order this package vs buy an SLT-1 off the lot.

    We actually had an adjuster straight up tell us a few years back that a vehicle we had in the shop wasn’t totaled but it had a high resale value so they were going to total it. Sometimes it’s best if the customer insists it’s totaled but I’ve had a lot of customers that didn’t want to have to buy a new car. Then it amounts to the insurance company stealing your car. Although they prolly have a different word for it. When you hose them it’s fraud, when they hose you it’s sound business practices

    About 1977 or so, I knew I wanted to be more than just another run of the mill line mechanic. So I paid to go to a night class for body work. The instructor would start the class and then leave, He would return in time to say class is over.
    So I went to work learning to build transmissions.
    I sure wish now I had found a decent instructor to learn body work. But I am grateful to know transmissions.

    In the past couple of years since the difficulty of new parts availability, I've seen some cars with light damage totaled. The insurance totals them due to the time it takes to repair being too long. Good for the people who like to flip cars, bad for those who want clean titles.

      Depends sometimes also if an airbag goes off. I have seen one that hit a deer and all the airbags blew and the Toyota 4Runner was totaled. No real structural problems other than a fender and headlight and grill. Seems there is no discretion.

      @larry, price of that safety shit is just insane, and when that cars frontal part are all plastic.... Repair estimation will go pretty high pretty soon when u calculate all together. If no labour included ( u do that only part swap repair) and with used parts, it will be very reasonable repair.

      I think that's basically what happened to my old Aveo; my deer hit damaged a part of the radiator support that extends to the driver side fender and surprise surprise, GM had just discontinued that part which is all one solid subassembly welded directly to the unibody. and because the Aveo is worth very little, the cost of parts and labor RAPIDLY exceeded the undamaged blue book value of the car.

    Just giving you a heads up Insurance companies are totaling out every vehicle with $3000 worth of damages cause its cheaper to do it this way then to repair it due to supply chain issues I bought a 2006 dodge ram 1500 for $2300 with skin damage nothing else wrong with it ACV was $8900 repair costs were $7900 Just shows scott we love auto auctions just for this very reason

    if I had to make a guess, it was a number of things that got it scrapped, too long in shop,time in general ,parts,paint...etc

    I thought the one you just got done was smashed. Well the emporium should be quite the supplier. Easy one for Scott! Groundhog day did you say? Stay safe and be well

    Nice work - but to be honest - never mind your excellent build skills - you're such a funny fella that I think I'd be content watching you just chucking stuff around and saying "in the pile"!! 😁

    Carfax on one of my former cars showed an accident. It had never been in an accident. I only found out it was on the report when I tried to trade it in, so of course he low balled me on value. When I objected the dealer tried to tell me there was no way Carfax could be wrong. I didn't buy a car from them.

    Great video & no better hands for this Terrain to be in. Did anyone notice Scotts laser focus while removing the 2 dents on the front passenger & driver fenders? I don’t think he blinked once. Just one question, do you let the GM insulation behind the 2 front fenders just dry out or does it need to be changed? I guess they would turn into mulch piles again down the road though. See you next Friday.

      I would just cut the wet bottom of it as it will make no difference to the car
