Mo-ma the half elf cleric whose buffs are kisses on the forehead, dispelling debuffs were her whiping smudge off our cheek, her holy item is the macaroni necklace our druid made in second grade even though he was 10x her age never went to school and just generally left screaming in confusion

Played in a game like that. The player with main character Syndrome played an Enchantment Wizard and the DM treated Enchantment magic as full on mind control. If the party (my human Fighter, an Elf Druid, and a Human Rogue) did anything that the Enchantment Wizard disagreed with, our actions got controlled through a combination of Charm Person, Suggestion, or Hold Person. We asked the DM to intervene, and they said no. We decided to give it one more session, and that session ended the game. We entered a dungeon, and the Enchantment Wizard used Suggestion to prevent the Rogue from looking for traps. The Wizard then used Suggestion to have my Fighter walk straight down a dungeon corridor and the DM ruled that i couldn't look for traps due to how the Suggestion was worded. My Fighter gets dropped by traps and the Wizard uses Suggestion to prevent the Druid from healing my Fighter, who promptly bled out. We ask the DM to intervene, they don't. The player of the Enchantment Wizard said, "This is fun." And at this point myself, Druid, and Rogue all quit the game.

Yeah the only time I have ever had a dm allow suggestion to be cast on a fellow player is 1) the player it was to be cast on gave permission, and 2) It was to get them, who were in an otherwise uncontrollable state to return to safety and not get trapped behind a portal to another plane. In other words, we did it to get them to safety since the mechanic that had driven their character mad made it far too dangerous to otherwise remove them from the danger. And, as said, that player consented.
My condolences on your dm though. You deserved better for sure. Enchantment spells can be fun and funny and all, but one should really be careful how they are used and never use them on a party member without their explicit permission. My own experience is probably the only example where I would not mind it being cast on a fellow pc or even my own characters.
I wish you many better games and much nat 20’s

I have an opposite story, of how I drove my brother nuts.
It was my first time playing DND, at the ripe old age of 11. My brother, who's about 20 years older than me, missed playing DND, and seeing as we lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere without internet, he decided to run a campaign for just me.
Problem is, I didn't treat it like a story I was the hero of, and instead, was more of a time travler interested in getting to know absolutly everyone and everything.
So I'd get sent on daring missions, to warn the town of oncoming raiding parties, and gather force to drive off invaders, and instead I'd get distracted because my elf wanted to know the complete family history of the first house I came to.
Is there a shop? Better be prepared with what the clerks kids did in school today. Are kids playing in the street? I'm going to need all their names, and to go home with them for dinner.
He threw me in with a group of soldiers to get things moving, and found himmself fighting all the enemys himself, while I cheered everyone on from the side lines.

I had a player who tried to sleep with ANY NPC I made- it got to the point of irritation so I told them of a risqué bar where many ladies of the night live. Each lady was cursed (I said it once and never again) with multiple really bad things- like...necrotic touch (this is a homebrew and this will come up soon).
So the party discusses and weren't really into it and said they'd go to a different place to get information.
The one player threw in that 'I can talk to them while you guys rest. I have my ways to get information'.
So the group decided (rather they remembered the curses and mentioned it and decided the player was going to do what they want) that it was OK so they let him go out.
After 'preparation' - getting nice clothing on, some smelly stuff he swore always worked (yes, he wrote it on his character sheet as his item he never parted with) he set off to the shady bar.
Ignoring the party (and my 1 warning) he decided to choose one of the ladies for 'some fun'. I made him roll a will save prior to set up the events that transpired after, I told him why and he rolled ignoring what I said. He failed.
When he was done (I never go into detail with the actions) having fun I had him roll to see what he got for a curse.
He acted like he was tricked but all other party members had even written it down knowing that he would do this- after a bit of sulking and begging without avail, he rolled and he got the lady with the curse Necrotic touch (in his character's nether region) and his character needed to get an elixir to save his 'mighty sword' (his words not mine).
After paying a good amount of gold he was able to save 'it' and from then on he would always be picky on who he went for- and ask 'is she cursed?!'.

Not all team moms are bad. I ended up playing one. I was playing a female elf witch hex chaneler archtype. DM went with rule of cool and I was loosly basing my PC on Repunzel from Tangled. My husband who was in the campaign played a Flynn Rider esque rogue. Quite a few players had real life issues including the guy whose character the plot was centered around. (But that's a story for another time) My PC was the party healer, had a +1 frying pan which was enchanted to season food to taste and 1 rank in profession chef. Also among all her gear in her handy haversack was a camp set. So she kept the party healed and fed. She always focused on the tactical situation during combat. Did what was needed to keep her and her party alive. Had a "No one is dying or getting left behind on my watch" After the guy playing our empoyer ghosted, the DM scrabled to salvage the story and find a way for our party to get off the island that we had been stranded on. People started looking to my PC for leadership. We had a party of 4 PCs and 1 DMPC and for one reason or another mostly having to do with the way they had writen their charater's personality no one wanted to take up the leadership position. Getting tactical input from some of them was like pulling teeth! There was no lack of role play. They would exchange witty banter in and out of combat all the time. With each other or the enemy. When it came to friendly NPCs .... um guys help?

    • @Mokiefraggle

That sounds familiar. I'm frequently the team mom for my groups, especially one group that is at least 50% newbies, and just needed someone willing to step up and be the one who said "okay, here's the plan." I'm quick to let a Charisma-based character take the reins when talking, though; I know that in-character even if my PC is the one stepping up to take charge of herding the cats, she's still a high-INT/low-WIS character, and we established early on that she's good at foot-in-mouth. It's a good balance for us, as I can help the group be tactical or take the first steps in grabbing a plot-hook, and still let the other party members have a blast roleplaying in places where my character has no reason to be the one taking the diplomatic lead.

    • @Mokiefraggle
      @Mokiefraggle 3 роки тому

@@NessaEllenesse Yeah, my Swordmage is deliberately low-WIS/low-CHA, since we use standard arrays for our stats. Plus, the DM pre-genned the PCs for the initial group and made sure all of them had average-to-low CHA, so we wouldn't be able to just bluff/diplomacy/intimidate to get out of situations, but would therefore need to find more clever solutions. It's a weird Dark Souls/The Witcher/Monster Hunter-ish mash-up, where we're all members of a Hunters' Guild, tasked with hunting down dangerous monsters for a nominal fee, and much like Witchers, the normal folk are of course a little off-put by Hunters for their having powers that the average person sees as strange and fearsome. Later on, as other people joined the game to replace a player we lost, we got a couple of PCs with higher CHA, but by that point even our newest newbies had gotten used to finding creative other ways of solving things that would normally just be a Charisma skill in any other game.

I once fell asleep at our table, after a very long shift at the supermarket breaking down deliveries and handling the Disposals (recording and getting rid of Rotten food so we can adjust our orders accordingly).
We were investigating a ruin and were posed a riddle with a picture of 2 Elven men standing face to face, wearing identical armour and weapons.
I cant remember the contents of the riddle but it revolved around sharing a Mother, a Father, the same day of birth, but not being twins...
after about 45mins of sleep (during which the party were still tryng to solve the puzzle or find an alternate exit) I suddenly woke up and blurted out "Triplets"
The DM laughed, described the wall parting and the image of a Third Elf over a Doorway appeared.
No idea what was going through my head though, to be honest.

That's a simple enough problem and solution...
Step one, have "the talk" with the problem Player... Explain that she is NOT the only one involved in the Game, that her PC is NOT the only STAR of the show, and she can just learn to get over herself and relax when other people step in for some spotlight...
Step two is giving her the space to absorb the critique, have her temper tantrum or whatever... and avoid shrapnel... The re-approach the Player with the understanding that if she wishes to continue, it's all well and good, and we can ALL forgive... It's easy (especially early on) to get over excited... whatever...
BUT if the antics like this are pursued... Step three... Show her the door. The other problem Player, too... Not partaking in the Game and Collaborative Story improvisation is just as bad as tyrannizing the thing... ;o)

In my current campaign my orc barbarian is, at the moment, the strongest character, and a common joke at the table is that he is the main character and since those jokes started I have been trying to move into the background so that the others can shine even brighter. I hope it's working, but I'm worried because during the last session at the final fight of the night my die kept rolling off the table and when it finally sticked there it crited, causing max damage and killing the mini boss, and I don't want them to think I was cheating just to keep that image of being a "main character". Playing via a call just does not allow my party to see that it wasn't intentional.

  • @masterroshen841

Thankfully my players(with the exception to follow), don't have to worry about these kind of toxic players. I run a homebrew open world with numerous playable regions. I tell everyone who enters that my world is rated R for Realistic. Actions have consequences, quests are there with deep secrets to be discovered but you can also explore. I do not, however, tolerate players who want to try and control, coerce, or intimidate my other players(many of which are friends. I don't pick favorites, I pick story and what I think will make it better. The few times I have had players who wanted to be difficult, I turn the world on them using their characters actions as a basis. Example: I had a player play a barbarian from the Great Plains of my world(think similar to the Dothraki of Game of Thrones). Then he decided he wanted the character to be an exile(that works), but it was exile due to a love obsessed chieftain's daughter who had been found with him and he had "supposedly" not slept with her even though the tribe thought he did.(edgy but workable) over the course of the character's few sessions he kept trying to spotlight himself while I planned ahead for his "consequences". He had managed to literally screw several of the female elven soldier at a fort he helped to defend (which is understandable but egotistical). He then was sent to help the elf capital of Bosnost but he had to help recruit troops using his spreading game to bring to the capital to break a seige. Along the way he would encounter various elves who either joined by choice or were forcefully conscripted. Then he hit the trap. In the forest there are many large carnivorous plants that the elves know about and manage by using druids and rangers. This player had neither with him and didn't feel the need to talk with "his" troops. So, when he saw a hillock with dead foliage around it that looked like a vantage point, he climbed on top of it. Then the trap clicked. He had climbed on top of a Tendriculous and there was also a Red Sundew on the opposite side of the road. The plant creatures had been ambushing the unwary and he walked right into them. So you understand, a Tendriculous can only be killed using fire or bludgeoning damage as they possess powerful regeneration abilities that make all other damage types non-lethal. A Red Sundew is immune to both acid and fire as it is coated in flame retardent acidic sludge. Both creature move slow and can't chase prey so the lay completely still to allow prey to mistake them for hillocks. A single Tendriculous can wipe a lvl 7 party if not prepared. A Red Sundew is a match for a lvl 13 party. Together, they were absolute death to this player who was too stubborn to give up the spotlight as a "hero". The only ones to survive that encounter were the players not present for the session (they were warned in private) and the NPC's smart enough to run away before they lost the chance. Btw, the player insisted his character name be Ron Fricken Burgundy (you know The Anchorman) or Ron for short... For history's sake I only even wrote him down as Ron but noted his real name was Eagle Wind(a tribal name of my choosing so as to keep continuity when the players meet his tribe.) The player never played again but I didn't want him too and neither did anyone else. Getting torn in two by two large carnivorous plants can be gruesome but he earned it for his arrogance.(side note: I did suggest running through an NPC as a test of humility for him but he refused giving an impassioned speech about heroism right before is drawn out death.)

UUUUGH. I have a player like this! He stays on his phone the entire session. He is only ever interested when the story is revolving around his character. Then he derails the party every time he decides to talk... Because most of the time, it's about something completely off subject. Im new, I am very new... But i still put a lot of effort into the story. It gets discouraging..

"There is no such thing as a main character."
Haha, tell that to some groups I've been in where the players are all so indecisive that I wind up as the de-facto party leader simply because I want to play the damn game instead of analyzing the situation for years. lol
And it's not just me being a blind "That Guy" who steamrolls everyone else and pretends it's their fault. I love being a support role, and other groups I'm part of, I can just sink into the background pretty easily. But damn are furries indecisive.

Me not always being able to control that is one of the reasons why I dislike group activities.

We have a narcoleptic player, but most of us just took it in stride. To pretend to fall asleep though, super rude. I admittedly end up being "party mom" and "leader" most games, but that was because the guys all got off task really easy and even when I purposely made a support character I seemed to get pushed to the lead.

I think it can be very difficult to come by the free time that goes into making a great experience for everyone involved in a session, and it can't be risked to accommodate anyone that insists on being the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral.

if she collected the notes that I wrote down, they were most likely things my character would want to remember anyway so I wouldn't give her the ones I'd written on because she seems like someone that would metagame stuff about what my character thought and hold it against them in character for it. So any notes you take down you probably shouldn't have given back, unless she was the DM which in this case she wasn't.

I have to say, I hate when players show up, even for one-shots with no backstory. Essentially, you want a joystick and a set of stats to beat things with. I mean, the DM has so much to have to deal with and then build your character too. Come on, man.
Players, please, give us guys behind the screen a break and something to work with. If you can roll numbers and crunch math to build your character, take five minutes to make a backstory. Please.

The only problem player I've had was this one guy, and he very much had main character syndrome. In my campaign setting, a post-apocalyptic magi-tech fantasy world with giant robots, he made a warlock who's father was some elder fae, despite the fact i said the fae, abyss, and infernal dimensions don't exist. The fault there lies with me, but he so badly wanted his character to be the main, he picked a fight with our dragonborn paladin. Two hits later the warlock is tied up and being carried around like extra baggage.
