- Our guest on this episode of "Freethought Matters" is Ryan P. Burge, a professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University specializing in religious demography. He’s the author of the 2021 book, “The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going.” Burge’s newest book is “20 Myths about Religion and Politics in America,” where he postulates that the way most people think about religion and politics is only loosely connected to the actual empirical data.

I am an Indian residing in the USA. Recently my family joined ffrf. I am glad there is a community for this. Thank you❤️
Fascinating discussion about the data concerning religion and non belief in the USA as well as its connection to politics. Also, fascinating perspective on both religious and political polarization. Well done Free Thought today. My interest in the topic is peeked!
A nice balanced discussion with an interesting guest.
Thank you ❤
@P J, Ditto. Again.
Thanks! Great guest.
I saw your advertisement in Scientific American. Found you on UA-cam, subscribed.
Excellent presentation - thank you
Cmon now ..i like that religiousy intro song u usually play w the chorus.. 😂 love that! Always sum that!❤
I think there must be a lot of nones in Congress but they are afraid to say so.
What makes a "None" is their willingness to state their distance from religion openly. Secretly disbelieving in God doesn't turn a Christian into an atheist anymore than secretly knowing the truth turns a liar into an honest person.
Prof. Matters seems to be an honest interlocutor. No matter whether his(?) opinions seem to be inclined with the views of the movement or not, it seems to me, that he’s a person to be respected. I really liked this interview of him.
The "Evangelicalism is [not] in decline chapter" is truly strange, especially in light of his next book "The Great Dechurching" in which he points to all the metrics according to which Evangelicalism is in decline.
I was a northern baptist. Cincinnati abolitionist so I like to make the distinction✊ we never took it that serious anyway ..we had a smoking section😂
The coming of the nones is gonna turn this country blue and green. Yeah
I am 56. I 'think' I might either 'resonate' or be on 'a similar wavelength' as Ryan P. Burge. Am also leaning VERY heavily towards atheism but I cannot determine to what percentage with any accuracy. I AM Quasi-Christian to some degree as I AGREE with the bible in some of its parts while I think I 'rightfully' cherry-pick from it. Then again, Anton LaVey and his book makes more sense right off the bat (in the first five pages) than the bible EVER does to me. Testimony and relationals, if I give it a minute, they jive MORE AND LESS with who I am and what I believe, for with whatever anyone approaches me, as I digest and mull it over. Does that make me 'torn' between more than just 'Science' and Religion? I think so.
Ryan says he is conflicted while wearing two hats. That’s a big reason why I left religion behind, I could no longer live with the cognitive dissonance.
That was some of the most separatist racist statements I've heard at the end if that's what his graphs r about ...yikes! Thanks for proving everybody's point❤
religion is politics, and always has been
But, does Free Thought really matter to the Freedom FROM Religion Foundation? Since, it is FREEWILL that allows an individual to be religious😆
Woah pal. Notice how he waited to the very end to put that crazy stuff on top! No my brother you're not doing science enlightenment & religion you can't have it both ways.. you guys keep trying that😂. No if an intelligent is sitting in that building its for political or social gain ...at best!
Thank you ❤
If I could give MORE thumbs up, @P J, I would. ... And then some.
