I use the Oregon G6 Gator Blades on my RCK54P23BX deck. They do a great job chopping up the grass and mulching it.
Right on, Iv heard a lot of good things about those Gator blades, they work really well for mulching up the grass.. I usually bungee up my grass flap so I run regular kubota “high lift” blades which work real good for the grass Iv got around here. Maybe some day I’ll make the switch tho to try them out 👍🏻

Another good informative video Biff. Just got back from FL. yesterday, boy am I glad I missed the 4" of snow we got. I went out and looked at the deck, and tried to roll the lawn first instead. I couldn't even roll half my lawn, as I was leaving bigger ruts than what I was trying to roll out.
Damn I don’t blame you! It sucked! Miserable weather we’ve had this spring! Wet as all heck too.. every time it starts to dry up we get another huge rain shower.. my yard is still soaked so I don’t doubt you left ruts trying to roll when you got back.. good ole NYS for ya! Haha. Hopefully soon we will be able to get back out in our lawns again.. I’m so far behind on videos I need to do it’s not even funny 😅
It’s not a bad thing to see how people do their scheduled maintenance - you may do something differently then the next guy and help BX owners determine if it is something they can handle on their own. I’ve never thought I’d have a use for the pallet forks, but using them to move the mower deck around has me thinking about it.
Pallet forks are one of those attachments you don’t think you’d ever need but end up being one of your main used attachments specially if you do not have a grapple.. before I had my grapple I used pallet forks for everything, from ripping up roots, old flower bed wood boarders, using them for picking up branches/limbs all over my yard every spring, to moving logs and other odd ball objects pallet forks are just a super useful thing to have and for the money you really can’t beat it. A lot of people think you need to move pallets with pallet forks but for most people pallet forks are used 80% of the time for objects other than pallets haha.

I’ve always sprayed silicone on my ATV CV boots to keep them from drying out, maybe it would help that rubber seal on gear box. Love the videos Biff!!

Another nice video. I really need to take more care with what grease I use. Only have one gun so I end up using whatever’s in it for whatever I’m greasing that day. Also, the one time I took the tensioner spring off, I had to chain the deck to a post and use a ratchet strap to put it on the post. Swore I’d never take if off again and haven’t. Yours didn’t look bad at all going back on.

As for using the same grease for everything I’m sure your not alone there, but I’m pretty OCD when it comes to that, you’ll see much better results and the grease will last much longer if your using the correct grease for the correct applications. The most important thing is, is that your sure to use bearing grease in your bearings.. so if you want to run only one grease then I’d say run a bearing grease in everything and you should be fine.. something like Lucas red N Tacky would be ok in anything tho Moly grease will last much longer in your loader pins specially if your like me and can sometimes go over your hours for greasing your loader.
Your right these deck springs are a bear to get back on, it took me about 4-5 attempts, I just cut them all out of the video to save on time, it was hard for me to get the leverage with out pulling the deck towards myself like you said lol.

Haha thanks Ross, it also has my OCD going crazy.. they woulda been switched but initially one of my grease guns broke so I had to buy a new one and the color was what the color was so I didn’t wanna swap the grease from each gun just to make the gun match the colors.. but if it helps at all the moly grease is actually grey not blue so that should elevate some of your pain lol. Really nice video, Mike. I'm looking to put a small winch on my tractor to help out with logging and other things. Your deck will be happy this summer with the new wheels, belt and blades! I push my Cub Cadet mower blades pretty hard but they're still cutting clean. I need to take a look at them though. Great work as always!
Thanks buddy! It sure mows nice now! Used it all morning to finally mow my yard for the first time this spring and it did a fantastic job, best it’s mowed since I bought it! Sounds like you have a little maint. To do yourself before your first mow. As for the winch you can get them pretty cheap at harbor freight, I made an entire video on how I made it winch setup but it’s a really old video but if you find it on my channel it may give you some ideas of how you wanna rig up a winch to your tractor. I have the G5 Gator mulching blades on my Cub Cadet lawn tractor, they do great, and seem to hold up longer than the factory blades do.
@@wildbill23c I bought a set of those when I bought mine, but I'm waiting to wear out the factory set before I replace them. I think one more session of "mowing" my trails to clean out the gunk will do it. LOL
I like having a winch. Mine's just 2k lb but it's useful. Here we are pulling vines down with the winch on a 600lb wheel horse 312-8

Great video. I do my maintenance while it's on the ground and it's nice to see a back-friendly alternative. I'm in my 60's and would love to see how you 'flipped' the deck over for blade change. My current method involves a sling strap on the center 'wheel' and pallet forks to get vertical.
Thanks Dave, I did it the exact same way as you described, only I lifted it off the saw horses first up in the air then directed it with my hands to be flipped and set it back down. It def makes a big difference working up high where you don’t have to bend over, you can get a nice set of saw horses cheap these days too so that’s what I’d recommend for when you need to do mower deck maint. (I hate working on the ground!) haha .

Fantastic video, yesterday I had my first belt issue while mowing with the Kubota. Belt began to delaminate possibly from spindle heat. Did not break but outer layer came off in areas. Your video is helping me with diagnosing the problem and hopefully preventing similar future issues. Mower deck only has 25 hours and blade started to shred when I was mowing tall heavy grass. I was in two wheel drive at 3500 rpm’s in turtle mode. Deck and belt sat in the sun for over a year prior to first use which may have reduced life span. Gear box was weeping quite a bit of fluid on the deck when I immediately removed it after smelling the melting belt and seeing pieces of belt in yard. I had greased all fittings prior to mowing and deck was relatively clean. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again for a great video.

Wow that’s a lot to maintain with a few old wheel horses! Tho Iv always been a fan of the older wheel horses I feel you’d be much better suited with a compact or sub compact tractor for sure. Let us know if you buy one!
Are you only mowing?? If that's all you are doing perhaps a used commercial 72" zero turn would be a great choice.
Nice job with this. Only additional thing I would suggest is removing and cleaning out the spindle cups/guards when changing the blades. They get filled up with old grease and grass clippings over time.
Thanks buddy, and your right you should do this when you get a chance.. I don’t think it’s needed to do each maintaince cycle but for sure every other cycle just to get that old grease out or to at least pop the cup off and see what it looks like under to see if the grease looks nasty or clumpy. You should also make note to check center spindle shaft, the snap ring behind the blade does pop off sometimes and will strip the shaft

You can actually still get the wheels with the bronze bushing from kubota but from what ive seen you get about the same life from either.

Excellent video, some great tips. How did you tip the deck over, is it doable by hand, or use the loader. Also any problem having the gear box upside down. Want to take my blades off for the first time to sharpen. Many thanks.
Gearbox wil be fine (look if there's a sniffer ontop that may start leaking when it's upside down)
Yep it’s doable by hand, I usually flip it over by hand when the Deck is on solid ground like it was at the end of the video.. you shouldn’t have any issues just be careful and watch your PTO shaft doesn’t fall out when you tip it over 👍🏻
@@rubendejong4412 is correct, because the spring valve/check valve is inside the vent the oil wont spill out of the vent because the check valve will close when it’s upside down keeping the oil from draining out of it

You want your rollers about 19mm lower than the bottom of the deck. Not so low that they run on the ground constantly. They are to stop the deck digging in on undulating ground. The hole in the handle of a shifter works for a spring tool. I think you call them crescent wrenches.

i see you work without the mower deck on. DO you cover the pto under the tractor so it won't get dirt on it? do you greese the pto underneath when you reattach the mower every time? Thank you I'm a new tractor owner and your videos help a lot.

Hey Mike, yes it’s definitely always a good idea to remove your tensioner spring before you store your deck for the winter .. this will not only keep your spring from stretching but will also keep your belt from stretching as well and it’s actually recommended in the owners manual for the deck I believe.

Nice video! Wherabouts in NY are ya? I'm in WNY between Buffalo and Rochester. One additional thing I do-when I take the blades off, I always remove the dust cups under them and clean out all the dirt/grease/and dried grass, and checked to make sure not dinged up-they are only around $7 each. As far as grease, never thought of the 2 different types. Always used the red grease for all fittings. All Kubotas I've owned(GR2100,BX1870, now BX2380) always did 10 pumps in each spindle. Did the 2" wheel spacers leave enough room between rear wheel and rear deck wheel on the 60" mower?
Thanks Robert, that’s a great tip, it certainly wouldn’t hurt if your doing all the maint specially with the blades off to just remove the cups and clean out all the old/dry grease why your at it, very good suggestion! As for the the wheel spacers, 2” spacers will clear the 60” belly mower but if you have a 50” belly mower you’ll need the 1-1.5” spacers

Some of the Kubota manuals specify to replace the lower (output) seal on the deck gearbox every 4 years. Very inexpensive repair compared to rebuilding the gearbox.
I agree! Though I’m really big on (if it ain’t broke don’t fix it) on stuff like that.. but it never hurts to be cautious because a seal is a lot cheaper than a new gearbox! Thanks for the comment

It really doesn’t matter Scott as they end up moving a bit over time anyways. They will never end up where you put them.. for some odd reason I just like to line them all up in one direction when I install them .. prolly cuz I’m OCD lol
Wish my dealer would get me my mower for my BX...its mowing season, would be nice to have it. Its only been 9 months since I got the tractor, salesman claims the mower is still MIA, no shit LOL. 9 months seems pretty excessive of a wait time.
I have 40 hours on my BX, the hydrostatic transmission/hydraulic fluid change will be done here soon, I have the filter and fluid, like you waiting for warmer weather. The initial oil/filter change will be done at the same time...should have a nice mess by the time I get done, never fails with every oil change on a vehicle I make a mess, so the tractor shouldn't be any different HAHA!!!
Damn that sucks! I agree I think 9 months is pretty redic for a wait time on a mower deck, I’d call them up soon and put a little pressure on them and tell them your grass is already a foot tall and see what they say haha. As for the hydraulic fluid change that’s really good you are doing it at the 50 hour mark.. a lot of guys don’t think it’s needed at 50 hours but trust me it is, there’s a lot of break in material and RTV material from the assembly process that will be stuck to the filter screener inside the trans so def be sure to remove that and give it a good cleaning. I’m also excited to do mine to see what that screener looks like after the last 480 hours Iv put on my tractor that we’re VERY abusive. I’m curious to see what it all looks like. Keep me posted with how you make out!
@@BiffsEquipment I called my salesman a couple days ago, and asked where my mower was, oh still no update from a couple weeks ago. I said that's strange the dealer 8 miles across town has 2 of them in stock...so either get me one, or give me my money back. Supposedly he's supposed to be getting me a check, not holding my breath as many lies I've heard from him, unfortunately I cannot afford to spend another $2500 to get another mower, so I'm stuck making payments on one that don't exist. With no paperwork trail showing I'm still owed a mower, its a horrible deal all the way around. Not happy at all with this dealership, and certainly wouldn't take my tractor to them to have any work done, I probably wouldn't see it for a year or longer, or the idiots would sell it to someone else.

@@BiffsEquipment I finally got a refund but had to add an additional $200 to it because the cost of the deck has gone up...but was able to go to another dealer and get a mower from them. So, after almost a year I have the mower, but had to go through a different dealer...my salesman said the last update on arrival of the deck would have been the end of July...umm so who's mowing my yard until then LOL. I should have asked them for one of their fancy Kubota Zero Turn mowers until the deck showed up LOL.

I already have the turbo for it but still need to finish building the turbo setup/turbo manifold .. I plan to finish building it once my new pole barn gets built so hopefully sometime mid summer 👍🏻

When I do 30 - 35 pumps on my middle spindle, the grease comes gushing out under the pulley and does not come out the spindle guard on the underside of the deck. Any idea why?
I just had to replace the seals on my gearbox. That cavity for that Central spindle is huge. Maybe your problem. Also, there is a seal underneath the bracket that might be bad.
I agree with David.. it sounds like you’ve got a bad seal.. your upper deal should not let the grease out before the bottom.. if so then I’d replace it because if it’s letting grease out the top then you can be sure water is prolly also getting in through the top as well where water easily collects near the seal. There are videos online of changing these seals. I havnt changed mine yet on video because mine are still good but I’m sure I will some day! Thanks for watching!
All the grease comes out of the bottom of the spindles. If you take off those guards under the blades you will find all the extra grease.
Your correct, the grease is held under those “cups” that sit under the blades.. but what I was referring to is “if you see grease coming OUT the bottom then you know youv got the spindles packed”

How big is the shed?
My shed is only roughly a 12x16 believe it or not.. tho it’s done me a very good job over the passed 2-3 years.. but now it’s gotten way too crowded as I’ve outgrown it with tools. Im building a 24x36” pole barn in my front yard this summer so stay tunned!

No I don’t unfortunately but if you call your local dealer they will be able to get it for you, I shoulda showed it in the video when I made it that’s my bad. Best of luck!

It doesn’t matter how the blades are oriented.. I like to keep mine all the same when I install them by having them all go the same direction.. I personally feel it works better but it truely should not make any difference. It’s just a personal preference thing. Best of luck!
Mine is 13 years old. I have kept it greased and changed blades only. My motto is don't fix it if is not broken.
I am waiting for someone to rip that exact gearbox apart in detail. Not the ones with two port holes.
I will certainly do it for you guys if I ever need to! Hopefully I won’t have to for awhile but next spring I plan to do a video replacing the seals on the gearbox so stay tuned!
what was the point with the winch? just showing it off?
You can see that the ground was to wet in that area . So as to not make ruts use the winch to pull the deck out to a dry spot.
@@sixgun2719 is right, I figured I’d use my old winch mod to drag the deck over the wet part of my lawn so I didn’t have to drive through it.. soon as you get to the bottom of my hill it gets SUPER soft this time of year and I didn’t want anymore ruts to fix as I already made some in the video I did a few weeks ago 👍🏻

I like this because what’s the point of modifying something so much that it can no longer do it’s original purpose.
