Smudger is just a repaint of Rheneas, due that he didnt appeared any more in model series, then they repainted it again into orange, put Rheneas face, and the Face of smudger was used in Bertram, and the whistle in Ryan
Fun fact Bertram was supposed to be a tank engine in the episode Toby’s discovery but the crew did not had enough money so they repaint dukes model into a darker Brown and add smudgers face. But smudger isn’t Bertram and so my answer is final
In RWS in the Island of Sodor book it turns out he was killed when he broke down and flooded himself and was responsible for the closure of the Railway face to that because the only mine left just so happened to be the mine that he was turned into a generator

Peter Sam did NOT have his new funnel when on the Mid - Sodor Railway and was NOT named Peter Sam instead named Stuart, numbered 4 keeping the number 4 on to the Skarloy Railway. 2. Sir Handel Was Named Falcon when on the Mid - Sodor. 3. WHERE IS SUMDGER'S NUMBER 2?.
