“I wrote this next instrumental… I thought so long and hard about the roots of bluegrass music & where it came from, emm, in my studies of Bill Monroe’s music, Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, people like that… and eh, my first trip to Ireland… felt like I’d died and went home. It felt so wonderful to be there and play music with the neighbours in the hood over there… and eh, they sure know how to play… it wasn’t no strain at all for me to jump right in & play the tunes I knew and they mixed right with tunes they knew and many of them were the same tunes just with different names… and eh, I kinda thought of that when I wrote this tune… kinda started out the Celtic way and kick into a little bluegrass.” - Ricky Skaggs on the origins of his instrumental ‘The Road To Spencer’ from the 2003 album The Three Pickers featuring Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson & Ricky Skaggs.
Thanks for posting, Russ. Awesome as always, and this one in particular makes our Irish eyes smile more than most. A belated Happy Birthday (& Happy St. Patrick's Day) to you from Ireland. Sláinte.
This was my 1st time hearing this tune & I Love it!!!
GREAT Melody, Bro. Ricky!!!
Front row seats last night at Stone Mountain Arts Centering Brownfield ME. What a treat! I did request Sullivan County :-) But was over ruled by the crowd..... Didn’t want it to end! Nice work Russ......
this tune is so beautiful. thanks for uploading!
These are wonderful sessions, Thank You for posting these ! There is something about a relaxed crew in a more formal setting like a studio,,, the attention and quality , I guess because of Ricky Scaggs etc. Great fun !
I know Nate’s already an accomplished musician in his own right, but I think it’s awesome how Ricky just pauses and listens to Nate as he’s picking. It just seems like Ricky’s the real deal!
Love playing along with these Jams. Great inspiration for me. Thanks Russ
Thanks for these. Great for banjo players.
Shine On Coffee even better for the tenors
Road to Spencer, one of my favorites ❤
Another great POV video... Just love being able to watch your technique Russ and see the banjo from your perspective. Great number. 👍
Love that accordion in there.....
Anxious to get the album. I am a fiddler and 20 year raw foodist. Raw food cures diabetes.
Thanks Russ! I really enjoyed this one. Accordion was sweeeeeeet!
I like that there's a clawhammer playing jamming with you.
I LOVE that there is an accordion here at this!
The best pull offs anywhere!
What a great tune. While I love the VR videos, these are great too, because we get to see exactly how you played your break. Gotta go grab my banjo now.
Just outstanding. What a treat.
Honestly this song is probably my favorite RS&KT tune, thank you for this Russ!
Love the videos from this jam, thanks for sharing!
If I was trying to pick a tune with Ricky staring at me from a couple feet away I don't think my fingers would function lol
I never realized how awesome the accordion sounds in bluegrass.
Jeff is an unreal level musician. He has played on a lot of Ricky's recordings including the "Live At The Charleston Music Hall" project. Love playing music with him!!
81crowe Im definitely gonna check that out! Keep the videos coming Russ! Each one is better than the last!
@@Santiago_Fernandez Just came across this video and saw your comment. Also check out Sam Reider (accordion) and the Human Hands - more acoustic jazz / roots rather than strict bluegrass; it is a really amazing band. The marriage of the accordion with acoustic stringed instruments really hearkens back to the Django / Hot Club of Paris sound, and old-timey music in that instrumentation (with good musicians, of course) is pretty awesome.
Santiago Fernandez fantastic instrument and so under used
It is almost like a bagpipe on a celtic song. Awesome stuff. Now I'm going to listen to some old blind dogs.
I used to play with a bluechip thumb pick but switched to a far cheaper national..not for moneys sake but they just feel and sound better..my 50 dollar bluechip thumb pick just looks at me with pleading eyes from my banjo case as i close it.
Great;!!!
I gotta say Russ that is a pretty cool tune it reminds me the game of Spyro the Dragon.
Red Haired Boy also reminds me of Spyro.
Funny! Who wrote that. Thanks for allowing us in on the jam Russ. So much talent in that room. The walls are strong.
GREAT jam! This seems to have stirred my Scott-Irish genes.
Great tune, well done everyone!
Love the picking and the Banjo Cam
Nice one, thanks for sharing!
Great vid Russ and a belated happy birthday. Can I come to your party next year and just be a fly on the wall? As an aspiring banjo player, I love the POV to watch you work your talent.
Happy late birthday russ🎉🎉🎉
Nicely done ✅
Jeff Taylor, man! 💥
How can I join you guys to jam...??seriously. awesome.
Amazing jam!
Nate!!!
That's how it's done!
Who is the older gentleman playing the openback banjo? Is that Glenn Carson?
Was that Nate Burie playing mandolin, sitting next to Ricky?
0 dislikes as it should be
nothing like Ricky Skaggs stop playing to watch your solo, lol
