Sorry for the early release time! Misclicked instant premiere (oops). Get ready for the official release of Made of Ale on all major DSPs in October for all your listening pleasure. And get ready to hear many of the songs live on our US and UK tours in November and December.
Once again we our blessed receive a perfomance from the legendery talents of the Stick, thay've gone through makeover since we last saw them in Oak ash and thorn, but their talent still shines through.
These guys are OK, I prefer the original performers that recorded the song on this channel. Some called their performance a bit flat, but I liked those cardboard blokes.
You guys are amazing. So many of your covers and songs have worked their way into my life now. You guys really unlocked my love of sea shanties and I know my Grandad would have approved if he where still here. Keep it up.
Ok, but how is it that every Made of Ale session is better than the original release? I honestly didn't think it was possible, yet every time it is! 🤩 Well done, lads! 👏👏👏👏🪕🎵
Perfectly adequate Gents! This is my favorite get up and go song to listen to in the morning so I can get off to work energized and ready to kick some butt!
"Hog Eye Man" is a traditional American work song and sea shanty with disputed origins. It likely emerged on riverboats in the mid-19th century, sung by laborers (who may have been referred to as "hog-eye men"). The song was primarily used as a capstan shanty, sung to coordinate hauling with the windlass on ships. Known for its energetic rhythm and often bawdy lyrics, it was later adapted by various folk musicians. Secondary Source: Sharp, Cecil J. and Maud Karpeles. English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, Volume II. London: Oxford University Press, 1932.
Oh, hand me down my riding cane I'm off to meet my darlin' Jane With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, the hog-eye man is the man for me He was born and raised in Tennessee With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, he came to the shack where Sally did dwell He knocked on the door and he rung the bell With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, who's been here since I been gone? A railroad navvy with his sea boots on With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, Sally's in the garden sifting sand The hog-eye man sittin' hand in hand With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, Sally's in the garden shelling peas Her long yellow hair hangin' down to her knees With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, I won't fare a hog-eye, damned if I do Got jiggers in his feet and he can't wear shoes With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Oh, a hog-eye ship and a hog-eye crew A hog-eye mate and a skipper too With a hog-eye, oh Row the boat ashore with a hog-eye Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man Steady on the jig with a hog-eye, oh She wants the hog-eye man
A "hog eye" vessel is a type of ship that sails rivers, rather than the open sea. A hog eye man, therefore, is a sailor on one such ship. A relationship with someone who might show up one day and surprise you is much more appealing for some than a relationship with someone who will be gone at sea for months at a time and be drunk when they come home.
Yeah! Well done TLJ, Y’all sound amazing just like you always do! Better yet, you’ve sung one of the shanties that I love above all else, so thanks for that and keep up your amazing work!
somehow you've managed to cover my favourite songs in your made of ale sessions!!! i looped this song so much when it was just the album version, and i'll loop this version too now!!! wonderful work :D
Choreography update for the Japanese folk dance version of this song-- I'm happy with the moves, and will be consulting a few other members of the dance group for input. I don't think we'll ever perform it at an official function, but as something to do just for fun it'll be great. There's so much overlap between the themes of folk songs (see: the Stormy Weather Shanty Choir's version of Soran Bushi) and this just fits so seamlessly with other traditional Japanese folk songs. We're packed with performances this year, so I don't know if we'll be able to perform it this year (including an event at the Smithsonian) but I'm determined to convince the younger members of the group to get in on this.
Love to hear some more of that fiddle, more vocal and more song and some more fiddle - really a drivin song thats done very very well - and that sweet thread of the fiddle gives it that bluegrass magic.
I hope recording this was a fun as it looks. I'm sure the actual recording process can be tedious no matter how much you love it. This goes hard and doesn't stop. Can't wait to add it to my collection!
Most adequate!!!! (And I never mind an early release time - don't know if anyone does!) I'd go on and on about how much I adore it, but at some point y'all'd get bored.
Why didn't Robbie get to play the harmonium. Otherwise. Very very very awesome job. I just recently added this to my Spotify likes page so I hear it a bunch.
Would love to see this broken out into instrument parts sometime. That banjo has such a great sound to it, it's really gotten me hooked on it as an instrument! ADEQUATE as always!
The first two lines of the song are a little strange; "I'm off to meet my darling Jane" then the rest of the song is about Sally being...incredibly rural.
So, I perform traditional Japanese folk dance and I'd kill to choreograph a dance to this-- I'll be bringing it up with the woman who heads the group I'm part of. If it goes anywhere, I'll link a video!
@@ThornForTheWynn I'm still working on the choreography, but it's coming along well! I had to edit a shorter version of the song first from 3:18 to exactly two minutes, since it's a really fast but hopefully I'll have something put together by spring when my group starts performing again.
@@willabyuberton818 It's getting there: I was laid pretty low over the winter with health issues, but I'm back at it! The biggest issue is that it's a *fast* song (by Japanese folk standards) so there's only a handful, myself included, who's be up for a crack at it. We're also booked near solid for events (which rarely happens) but it is getting there! Thanks for checking in!
"What Instrument do you play?"
"The Stick"
Good instrument the stick... Thinking of getting some bells for cat collars, and some bottle caps, and making meself a stick.
Yes Dave plays the earth lol during oak and ash and thorn.
I see you too are a fan of Oak and Ash and Thorn
FFS I think I might actually be qualified to play "The Stick"
But does it djent?

Well we won't complain 😂
Too busy jamming to complain about release time, almost time to play it again
US tour? I'm seeing you in Montreal! I guess you Irish can't tell the difference. ; P
Will there be a CD available, or digital only?
Looking forward to seeing you in Tucson for some songs 'n' shanties in the desert! 🏴☠🏜

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same!
Came here to make this exact comment. (tips hat)
it took me embarrasingly too long to get this one 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀
@@drih_hawkeye o saw the comment like five times before I got it, I've seen the other vid at least 30 times too. Embarrassing lol
Dave's Stick is back, oh hey!
Honestly, this version is better than the studio version. Lot more character in this one.
The way Andy says "Railroad" is the best second of TLJ music ever.
I'm literally listening this part on a loop (1:03)
"ÆÆÀÄÅÆ"
@@hugo_the_hobbit by the way, cute profile picture!
@@CasperTheRamKnight Aw, thanks!
@@hugo_the_hobbit u welcome
I'm kind of addicted to this song and this is a great rousing version of it. It benefits from the additional instruments.
the energy in this one is off the walls
Yesssss Daves stick is back. I declare this adequate!
This song will never get old to me
This is the very first song in my workout playlist. Every. Single, DAY. Go Stick!
For me, this is a fun little callback to the first song I heard of them, "oak and ash and thorn", as I see that the stick is back XD

No need to apologize for an early release thank you for this amazing song

i prefer og bones in the ocean and am mixed on this one but all the others are definite improvements
@@cintom8454 Bones in the Ocean and maybe Nantucket are definitely exceptions.
the beard percentage is far more adequate
Love the extra bite on the lead vocals in this version, matches the intensity of the drums well
Accidentally listened to this at +25 speed and damn, it's a barnstormer.
This song just makes me inexplicably happy. So thank you for another version of it to give me more excuses to listen to it. :-)
Fantastic rendition lads. Impossible to sit still listening to this one.😂🤩
Love this and Alex's fiddle! It's one of me and my grandson's favorites!
I taught Dave to play the stick. You're doing me proud, lad 😍
🤣🤣🤣😂
The very best version! I love the music video, but this version just thumps and jumps a wee bit better!

Very adequate performance, so glad I could catch it live! Love from Canada 🇨🇦
this video has an infectiously good atmosphere
listened to them sing this live yesterday and had to come listen to it here-its so good!
The energy in this version is fantastic! It's cheerful, fun, and it's plain to see you guys are having a blast playing it too! Love it
Adequately enthused to see you guys in Nashville next month!

This fukin' slaps! Dirty dark beat and raspy primal vocals... What's not to love! Lovely stuff!
I love this version of the song ~ especially that Andy's voice went a bit rougher, it really fits the song & sounds awesome ^^
Reminds me so much of Firefly's opening with that violin!
The stick got a jingle upgrade!
The more of these I watch the more I binge your live performances that are on UA-cam, only a matter of time til I find time off to catch you live
Can’t wait for these sessions to be released! Have to say this makes me feel like I am seeing you live all over again so bravo all of you!
Love me a swinging sea shanty! Sounds great guys!
They made the stick an instrument! How creative.
This uploaded on my birthday, and I do believe this is my favorite gift, thank you guys!
Happy Birthday x
I still have no idea what a hog eye man is, but the song is great and the video work is amazing! The angles and the timing of cuts were so good!
