    Let me know if this is something you would like to see more, and if so, what would you like to see more or less in these videos.

    Yes we want more flight analysis, thank you for the video
    For the next one, can you also include the flight planning, weather check, launch site selection, straight line or triangle, what turn points.
    The second part of the video, is what you have done in this video. the debriefing with gps track, what was the thought process, what was the mistakes...
    Thank you

      Thank you for commenting and I am glad you enjoyed the video. I will see what I can do about adding more details about how I came to the derision of flying each given day, the pref-flight check.

    "Failed" is an interesting word. Thanks for letting us in on your thought process as you analysed your flight log. I appreciate the honesty and the clarity with which you expose your "failings". At the same time you made a number of good decisions. It is obvious that you are trying to help us improve our flying by letting us see and understand how you see this flight. That you and bon courage pour la suite!

      Thank you very much for your comment. That was my intention to show both the good and the bad choices I made, so we can learn from both. "Failed" because I had a plan for the day and that plan failed, but I got an unplanned micro adventure instead, and I can't complain about that. Story of the flight out will be released this Friday 10.04.

      Glad I can help, where do you fly usually? I still remember my first 50 km flight! I was super stoked after spending 3h 36 min in the air cruising around central Taiwan. (I used to live there). Feel free to ask me questions, happy to help.

      Thanks Karlis. I live in Montreal (Canada) but have been coming to Doussard 2weeks per summer for the last 2 years. Every year we do a SIV at flyeo and take 2-3 days xc stage. I learn more in those 2 weeks than the rest of the year back home...

    That was great man. Kept me interested right till the end.
    This really is the human experience. We make mistakes. But what is good is...if we understand what or where we went wrong...and learn from that. If we mess up and don't know why and there is confusion, that can be frustrating. How can we learn from that.
    I messed up recently in my PPG were I was flying the beach. Our old favorite spot by the Red Temple. It was a great day perfect conditions and I was flying facing north into the wind. Almost dragging my feet in the sand. It was going perfect. I was getting near the end of the beach stretch and time for me to get a bit higher and make my turn. Just then some military helicopters can around the bend over the ocean. Not close to me, but I didn't want to be seen by them...incase they radio to dispatch. So I stayed low and decided to make my turn over the ocean. I banked my left turn too hard going into downwind and lost my altitude and ended up in the ocean. lol.
    Maybe the ocean was the best because it broke what could have been a hard unplanned for landing. So I didn't get banged up but it sure was a bitch landing in the sea. I could have drowned and that would have been shitty but I was prepared and had my floatation vest on. I would never fly over water without one.
    I only had a second to react so I couldn't undo my harness until I was in the water. It only takes a second and my legs were twisted in lines from swimming. I could see how people drown in the water. If you panic you're dead. Anyhow...I lived to tell my tail and another day.
    Live and learn.

      Ken, thank you for your long comment and description of your incident, boy I'm glad you walked(swam) away from it!! I have been in water a few times, those lines get to you really quickly and with a paramotor it must be a nightmare to get out of. Keep safe out there, I want to go an visit you again every now and then. Was blast the last time. I have a trike for you to fly if you come to France, can't wait to see you around my playground! :)

    • @niconico3907
      @niconico3907 4 роки тому

      Scary, why did you turn downwind? its better to turn upwind, you would have been slower, you wouldnt have needed to bank hard to complete the turn, so you wouldnt have lost altitude and ended in the ocean.

    • @kchappelle
      @kchappelle 4 роки тому

      Nico Nico ,
      No kidding. Read my story. I said I was heading north. I had a south wind. So I was flying into the wind. I had to turn around because I was at the end of the beach. If i turned left I would be turning down wind. If I turned right I would be turning down wind.
      I had no choice. How could I turn up wind when I was going up wind? I don’t understand your question.

    Forši, Kārli, gaidīšu nākošo sēriju!
    It is always a trade-off between being patient and taking smaller risks of getting stuck and bombing out, or not being patient and gaining extra kilometres. The answer to such a choice unfortunately is always after the flight :D So it is a kind of gambling! I think the best is somewhere in the middle, myself i'm often on the one of the extremes, and bomb out very early, or fly really slow. But for record, flights, I agree, one must take risks and even if only 1 flight out of 10 goes good it is a big success.
    Another thing which I am trying to learn myself if changing the mindset in flight which is often not very easy - understanding that the day is going to be slow on time in order to avoid early bomb-outs, an to turn it into a shorter but nice panoramic XC flight (para-tourism), or the opposite - keeping it conservative, and then doing a nice XC when the conditions improve (even though too late for the personal records). But at least satisfaction at the end of the day whatever the outcome is.

      Paldies Mārtiņ par komentāru! Nākamo sēriju plānoju jau nākam nedēļ!
      I agree it is all about being in balanced during the flight. A hard thing to do. In this flight after being stuck it was really hard to get my head back into the game, this has happened before and I am always trying to improve.
      Yes, for the record flights you gotta milk every little bit the day offers and that means risking landing out. And every record flight I ever done there has been many failures. I for sure have to fail many times before I succeed!! Part of the game, lately my biggest task is to keep my head leveled during the flight. When I am good at this, I manage to fly better as well :)

    Thanks for sharing. For me it's always interesting how people do their decisions and why. It's very important in our sport that we reflect ourself. It would be very interesting what went well in your fly and how to improve that. I also think that even if a fly didn't work as planned it is good to find something about it that make you feel good, like you cross the 100k or you explore something that may help you if you come back one day.
    Keep it up for the community. Its something our sport can learn - be self reflective and improve as a sport.

    • @FlyingKarlis
      @FlyingKarlis  4 роки тому +1

      Martin, thank you for your input! For sure, I enjoyed the 100 km flight and it was great flight full of lessons. I always reflect an see what I did good and what I didn't. I guess I should add more of the good stuff in my videos, will make sure I do in the following videos.
      For example for this flight.
      The good
      1) Low safe, it wasn't easy and I really was low there, looking around for landing options and trying to stay calm and concentrated, it worked. Man that feeling when you get up out of these low places, it is just incredible!
      2) After the low safe (3:48), I got up in a place I though I would. As you can see I did some searching before, but didn't stay long, I was just gaining enough to be able to safely connect to the mountain here, as it was the bigger "pocket" where the air would trigger the thermals best. This was a really nice point of the flight, as I manage to get up exactly where I though I would. It always feels great, when you read the terrain exactly right and find yourself up high again.
      3) Then at 3:55, I got just the greatest thermal, there was a sailplane with me (the pilot actually later said hi to me on Facebook, pretty cool) It was just incredibly nice thermal shared with another free flight loving pilot.
      4) The following glide towards Sisteron (from 3:56 - 4:07)... if you haven't been here, Sisteron is an absolutely incredible place, this town is stunning when you drive through it and it is even more so to fly over it, that ridge line East and West of it is just made for paragliders as the winds are coming usually from South direction and it creates this nice lifty line above it.
      There, to name a few. I just felt like adding this to the video would be too long. You have a point and I will be adding more positive aspects of it as well.

  • @sirual5

    this kind of flight analysis is really what i would like to see more of :) feel free to go a bit slower. it is very interesting to see how someone's idea of where to go and what to do change depending on how his flight is progressing. but it's always a trade off. you decide to leave a thermal because it's weak and you know they can be stronger because you've felt them earlier so you go for the next one aiming to the place of the highest probability for a good thermal depending on your observations and expectations. but sometimes there is one, and sometime there isn't :) anyway, the most interesting part of these kind of videos is when you pause and then say "ok, i'm in this position and i want to achieve that so i have these options of which i will choose this one because that ant that" :) subscribed for the next one :D

      Adding onto this: Great work on showing the conditions via picture/video from your perspective along with the track. At 4:46 you comment that it is shading out and overdeveloping, and at (5:50) you show West and North from video. I think it would be helpful to see the track location at the bottom right of the recorded video where you observed the conditions and made a decision, (essentially combining 4:46 with 5:50). Conditions may also include the average thermal of the day and what you predict is ahead (weaker thermals, stronger valley winds, predicted weaker meteo winds). Thanks for this one and excited for the next!

      The 3D website shows track length, which includes every turn in a thermal, that adds the extra 70km. The distance from take-off to landing over the turn-points was 100 km. This is also what we count in records and XContest - www.xcontest.org/2019/world/en/flights/detail:seabirdlv/1.5.2019/09:01
      Hope this helps to understand the difference.
