Down To You is the 4th track released off of Marianas Trench’s new album, Haven. This 4th song was written to represent the 4th plot point in Joseph’s Campbell’s book “The Hero’s Journey” - a scholarly tome that breaks down and defines the arc of virtually every quest narrative in existence. This 4th plot point is “Meet The Mentor” which represents needing support, help and advice from a trusted person in your life to gain strength and confidence to challenge yourself and pursue your goal.

Side note, love how early videos tended to be pop culture references of other things (like Shake Tramp starting with those Queen heads) and now they can have an entire video referencing just themselves.
This song is stuck in my head in a way no song has ever been before. It's already playing from the moment I wake up. When I listen to other songs this one is still in my brain. Something about this song is just really special!
I'm seeing lots of (well-intentioned, but) misinformed discussion in these comments about generative AI (genAI)/AI art, so as a semi-professional visual artist who's looked into this specific video a bit, here's what's ACTUALLY gone down (to the best of my knowledge!):
*TL;DR: The images are not AI generated, they are still frames that were chosen from past music videos, which have had a comic book-esque filter applied to them. Many programs that provide these filters have started forcefully integrating genAI into their filters, and they don't give users any way of opting out of this. So the people behind this MV had essentially no control over the use of AI in their tools! It was most likely used without any malicious intent- so instead of being upset at the band and their team, direct that frustration to the programs who are forcing people into this position.*
A photographer who has been known to work with the band for years, Cass O'Neil, confirmed on their Instagram story that they hand-picked every single frame used in this video, choosing from older MVs of the band! They also confirmed that the MV was made by putting the chosen stills through a comic book style filter, and then manually animating them together in a video editing program. *You can see a screenshot of the Instagram story here* (imgur.com/a/NTbC7QG) (Edit: I don't know how to used Imgur, sorry 😭). So for those who are worried that the band('s team) opted to not pay or involve any human creatives in this, that is false. *Human creatives were directly involved with every step of the process for this video.* The filtered versions of the images that we see in the video are not hand-drawn, they are images with a filter applied, but human creatives were still the ones putting it together!
What most likely happened here is that the program that was used to apply the filter (most likely Photoshop or something similar) has incorporated AI into their filter tools. Filters like this have existed for decades without the use of genAI, but recently, many major companies and programs have been forcefully integrating genAI into their tools, and not giving users a way to opt out. There are plenty of articles discussing this, and even Adobe/Photoshop themself have been discussing it very loudly and very frequently for the last few months. *Basically what this means is that when the humans behind this video clicked the button to add the filter, the program they were using automatically used genAI instead of/alongside the filter.* The humans behind this video have zero control over what the companies behind their programs have implemented into their tools, and most likely were not aware, or were not able to opt out/use a different program without genAI.
All this to say that, with time crunches and other limitations likely also being present (budget, small team, etc.), *it is incredibly likely the team behind this MV had zero malicious intent behind the use of genAI. What most likely happened is that they were unaware of the use of genAI, or unable to work with tools that didn't use genAI.* But there are still human creatives who still put a lot of care and work into this video, and were compensated for it! The band themselves (Josh, Mike, Matt, Ian) are not the ones responsible for making this video, so directing any frustration you have at them is unproductive. The band's team(s) and other creatives at 604 Records are the ones who made it, and they did a great job! It's just unfortunate that the tools they used forced genAI into the project.
If you are frustrated/upset/etc. with the use of genAI in this MV, please don't direct those feelings towards the band and/or their team. To do so would be unfair, and wouldn't lead to any real benefit or change, since it was out of their hands. If you feel strongly about the use of genAI art, I want to ask that you please direct that frustration towards the major companies and corporations who are forcing human creatives to use genAI, and refusing to hire human artists in place of genAI. That's where change needs to be seen, and that is the root of this problem. *The major companies who force genAI into their programs without letting users opt out are the reason why this video has genAI in it.*
I left a similar comment to this earlier but it's since disappeared, so I hope this one sticks around. I'm not here to debate the ethics/etc. of genAI rn, because I think that's too big a discussion to have in a UA-cam comment section. I'm only making this comment to try and keep people informed and stop the (likely well-intentioned) spread of misinformation, especially since that misinformation has caused negative pushback towards the band and their team(s). I only want to use the knowledge I have to help people understand what happened with this video, so they know how to move forward with the feelings they might have about it. Thanks! :D

Well, I think AI has us all clutching our pearls , but to be honest this looks like authentic stylistic film making. Years before AI ruled the world, people used filters like this and nobody batted an eye. The images used in this video feel authentically harvested by human eye , with a cool comic book filter to tell a story

My old slide phone had a filter that would make things look "cartoon" like the images in this video. The images are real and pulled from their own videos, they just have a filter over them to make them look like that.
I would be surprised if it was AI considering they used a real artist for A Normal Life.
