Inside a Liquid Mirror Vortex in Slow Mo - The Slow Mo Guys

- Gav and Dan have re-melted their gallium and stuck it in a blender. Will it result in cool psychedelic slow mo footage with infinite reflections, or will it fly out of the blender and melt everything in the room?

UA-cam compression doesn't do this justice
Exactly what I was thinking. Usually I have YT set to 1080p to match my monitor but I had to crank it up to 4k even tho my monitor doesn't' support it just to reduce the compression artifacts. I would love to see the footage before it was uploaded to YT.
@@PlutonianPenguin Yup I do the same, I learned that trick from this channel :D
480p was too low-res and low fps
720p50 was 3fps but a bit better
1080p50 was somehow the noisiest? also less than ½fps
i think I'll make into clips and download them to see if my phone can render it better, bc i imagine it looks even more amazing than that big blob of spilled gallium which was the only think I was able to see clearly
I really did miss out on it despite my best efforts, guess my phone isn't as technologically advanced as it is required to experience such great quality content smoothly

Incredible footage. That setup is impressively complicated and awesome. Well done guys.
hi destin
Yo
Destin! That new Prince Rupert's Drop epoxy video was fantastic!
the effort those guys put into recreating the visuals of every music video in the 90s is astonishing :)
Someone said laminar flow?
I really wish there was a place we could go to see all these shots unaffected by UA-cam's compression. Mainly this video and the glitter one. Amazing as always

8k would be mind blowing
Do you know how many gigs that would be? It wouldn't be viable
@@youtube.handle69 without UA-cam's compression, not without compression in general. UA-cam's compression algorithm is specifically pretty notorious for ruining high quality shots.

The amount of money in that room is just mind boggling. And just when you thought it can't get more expensive, Gavin pulls out ten thousand dollars worth of extremely high end light tubes.
REALITY VS SLOW MOTION .
ua-cam.com/video/byzlReNA1z0/v-deo.html
Considering I can count 9 tubes, that's two kits in the room. I don't know US prices, but that's $16k AUD for two kits here in Aus.
I will say though, they're 100% worth it. Titan tubes are freaking brilliant, there's a reason so many people use them now. lightweight, portable, super bright, excellent battery life, tons of control modes, non flicker colours for filming, RGBAW and colour temperature control. I absolutely adore them personally.
@@SpazMonkeyBeck In America, that would be around 11k USD. I've never even held one of those tubes in my hand. Much too expensive for me. But they seem really cool.
They are lights. You can pick up neon lights for less than $100
Also ppl are buying the entire 4 tube kit for around $5000 so don’t know where people are getting $10k from, maybe when they first came out years ago
That “test shot” you thought might be garbage is actually one of the coolest shots you got. Looks incredible!

It's hypnotic. I would love to see it in a round blender, where the currents of the spinning wouldn't bounce off the edges.
Dan's smile, face and stutter after the "I mean we won't be able to go in as deep" cracked me up! 9:16

I would love to see the uncompressed video of this. UA-cam compression really hurt this one! Still looks amazing!

I would pay for that

It blows my mind that you have actually filmed something real, physical, thing that truly does exist in the material world, which looks like part computer generated GFX and part what happens in ones mind while tripping. Nothing short of absolutely amazing.
i was about to say the same thing but checked to see if anyone else said it and your were comment number 2 LOL ... HEX coin $0.08 $PLS coming soon same founder!
I remember years ago when they did the fire tornado in the backyard. Slow mo fire looks CG and turning it into a twister just makes it seem even more unreal
I just watched this one again, except this time on a 4K OLED. Gorgeous results.
I'd love to see some *ferrofluid* action from you guys. I don't think you've done that yet.
Jusy watched it on samsung 720p tv. Pixelated mess even from distance
My phone also has 4K 😎
Oooo that would be cool.
Oh wow I can't believe I didn't think of this, I've got a big LG C1 right in front of me. Though I am watching this on an oled phone screen so it's comparable at least
They did a little bit with Ferrofluid in the early days:
ua-cam.com/video/i3jA40arq9Y/v-deo.html
I'd like to see you do this again using a magnetic stirrer and in an egg shaped vessel. That will create a smooth rippling vortex.
Not going to lie, that’s some crazy relaxing footage to me. And any of it looped would make a really cool screen saver.
I was just thinking I'd love that as a screen saver!
The shot at 12:28 was so insane that my brain was legitimately having trouble comprehending what it was seeing. Had to pause the video and watch it several times. The stuff you two make is just… incredible.
Yea honestly the red and blue really beautiful

This random shot of dan had me dying
These shots could literally be used in a movie, just for the shape and flow effects. Like Dan said, some kind of Sci-Fi flying through space or hyperspace.
I feel like these shots should be used as reference materials for special effects going forward. Especially around 8:40 where it looks like some sort of tunnel collapsing as a mass is chasing the camera.
I was thinking the same thing. Their slow-mo underwater explosion was already used as reference for a shot in Solo.
Check out Disney's The Black Hole from 1979, done entirely without any computer effects!
@@Euanhamiltonmusic do you mean star wars han solo movie?
@@Euanhamiltonmusic I was about to say the same thing, lol
@@Clearoceanvibes Video explaining the shot that was used as reference for Solo: ua-cam.com/video/Y5KVwrKaafA/v-deo.html
Speaking as a veteran of the 1967 Summer of Love, I rate your psychedelic footage as high enough quality to be in the centerfold of the SF Oracle. If you can get a hold of an ancient copy, you'll know what high praise that is!!
Made it about 90% of the way through the video thinking "this is cool, but I feel like it could have been better..." and that was when I realized UA-cam set it to 720p by default. Rewatched the entire video in 4k. Blown away. At certain points I had to remind myself that it wasn't computer generated.
The colored lights were an incredible idea, it absolutely looked like something straight out of Doctor Strange. Since the droplets that flew out looked so beautiful, could you maybe use a shower head or something like that and more powerful colored lights to create a sort of rainbow gallium rain? I think that would look phenomenal in slow motion, absolutely messy for sure, but phenomenally beautiful.
Or just with a buckets with some holes in it! Would be pretty simple to make with a kiddy pool under it
Unfortunately UA-cam compression algorithm would probably butcher that one worse than the glitter drop...
still a neat idea though!
"It looks like the T1000 sneezed in a night club" another Dan classic haha 😂
It looks... computer-generated for some reason. And absolutely like some sort of sci-fi portal through space-time. Super cool!
ok
I think it would take a day to render a single frame of that stuff. Calculating all the curved reflections would undoubtedly be a nightmare!
Even after 10 years, you two have still managed to pump out one of a kind content 👏
gosh I missed Dan so much, I can't even imagine how difficult it was for Gavin to be inhibited from visiting/filming with him for so long. To be able to see him in these videos again is such a blessing ❤ thank you both so freaking much, especially for getting through the dark times without each other

Killer screensaver! Also thousands of amazing still shots. A video wall mural of this would be sick.
it looks like what I see in my head while falling asleep. would have been really cool to shine some lasers in the gallium while it was spinning
There are times when these guys get a shot that looks so unreal, it looks more like vfx than vfx do (Dan getting a soccer ball to the temple, the multicolor fire tornadoes, etc). I got that with the colored lights at the end. You could never recreate it in rendering software as good as it looked live.
Was kinda thinking in a few parts how good would I be able to make it look in CG, so now I do want to try it but also will probably be very disappointed in the outcome as it will probably be way less cool than I imagine it could be haha
They're back! Colorful liquid is always a good slowmo

That shot at 12:30 is my favorite. I'm so glad you included that. Totally black with crazy lights, just simple enough to really see what is going on, but so dynamic as to make it incredible
Gallium: the bane of UA-cam’s compression system
this entire channel is the bane of YT's compression system lol
*Glitter, confetti and (sometimes) snow.*
"Allow us to be among your ranks."
What would it look like if glitter was mixed in there?
UA-cam compression.. the most worthless subject in video comments.
You better watch this in 4K, the compression is too bad for the lower resolutions.
I would buy non edited high bitrate video packs from them
Certainly the most amazing footage!
This was what I wanted to do as a teenager, creating visual effects, art/movies.
At the beginning I waited, I thought "you HAVE TO show this with coloured lighting". Then you did to my wish. You are amazing!. Thank you for inspiring me to create!
By far, top 10 fav video from y’all! ❤️🤘🏼
This is some of the most surreal footage I've ever seen, the way the gallium folds on top of itself and is reflecting everything and itself. It brings star gate to mind for me, these shots would have been fantastic gate effects
Dude you’re absolutely right. That would’ve been an amazing gate effect
Even more so if it was reversed, I think.
I'm kinda curious to see what this would look like in a round blender, the square edges on yours made it more turbulent, but that may have been why these shots looked so good. Maybe I'll drop a few hundred K on a similar setup and let ya know 😂
And i seem to remember from chem lab in college this thing called a mixer, which used a magnet coated in plastic (in glass or other kind of container the gallium won't destroy) that might be bit nicer than a bloody blender.
I assume you would get a more coherent vortex? That might end up looking more hypnotic.
This is what I was thinking, how would a smoother vortex look?
@@Tara_Li Yep, magnetic stirrer is what you're thinking of, you can use whatever shape container you want, they even have heated magnetic stirrers
I have to agree with others, a round container would have been cool for the 'inside a tornado' shot
I was wondering the same thing. Would have been a smoother spiral effect
I watched this in VR and it was AMAZING
Oh that sounds like a real trip.
This is like textbook video compression nightmare footage. So many reflections at so many different angles, poor youtube didn’t even know what hit it. Would love to be able to see the uncompressed master of this.
The best inventions happened casually or by mistake. That last test shot was everything.
Dan trying not to lose it at "we won't be able to go in as deep" @ 9:15 is hilarious
IKR 😂😂
Men making associations...😆
Classic, can’t ignore it😅
Exactly like Gav a few videos back trying not to lose it when Dan said "perfectly hard balls" 🤣
I ran to the comments to see if anyone else noticed that.
As a chemist I have to say that your setup with the blender and everything was just the worst amateur setup anyone could come up with. lol
Love all your videos!
I've loved watching this channel grow from chip pan fires in a backyard to robot arms and liquid gallium.
1:25 I think Dan just perfectly explained why I love this channel so much.
I don't know what blows my mind the most: The skill set you guys have acquired for making everything look spectacular... or your ability to come up with the most wonky things to film!
You guys have unintentionally made the single most perfect screensaver...
I feel like I could watch this kind of footage all day. It's so mesmerizing and I almost felt like I was in a trance watching it
I’d love like an 8hr loop of this with that music to chill too.

@@AndrewCheshire Neither would I have mind
One of the strangest things I’ve seen in my life. Impressive, beautiful, but strange.
Those swirly machines that spin magnets to stir liquids would have been much better than the blender to create a whirlpool.
It's so heartwarming to see you two finally filming together again. Missed the banter during the lockdown/distance.
Gav: "We won't be able to go in as deep..." Dan: Impressive holding it together skills not to lose it, or say 'fnar'.
Great video, loved it.
He fought it really hard
I think Gav also realised what he’d said after Dan’s snigger and held it together too. I want to see this in slowmo!
@@TexRobNC Hard and deep.

This is soooooooo extremely satisfying to watch!!! It's hypnotic.
SOOOO glad Dan is back. My wife and I agree, Gav's the cookie and Dan is the filling, on their own they're both good, together though, you're an Oreo, and slow mo is the milk that makes you both even better. Amazing video lads
Yup, the chemistry they have really makes the show for me, other than the amazing slow mo that is. Imagine if this channel was just faceless slow mo shots, it would still be cool but nowhere near the experience it is when you get Gav and Dan's commentary and shenanigans.
ua-cam.com/video/kqrQ2th7EJI/v-deo.html
"Gav's the cookie and Dan is the filling" please don't say this
Am I the only one who watched Dan’s face very closely as soon as Gav said “we won’t be able to go in as deep,” and then cackled in proxy for Dan since he did such an admirable job of keeping it together?
I was giggling to myself and then looked at Dan and saw my reflection 😂
I did the same 😂
I feel like a round blender could make some pretty cool stuff, a little bit more of a consistent mirror ish thing

You guys should put this footage on a loop and sale it on the store as a screen saver.
This is one of the greatest ones you've ever done, very creative guys.
This seems like an absurdly involved way to recreate the old-school Doctor Who intro sequence, but I totally love it!
The close up gallium vortex shots would be perfect for a TOOL music video
I am super impressed with this footage! It's absolutely amazing to watch
If you look closely, it seems that the speed of the vortex is enough “wind” to cool the splashes of gallium, and therefore hardened clumps or shards slice into the spinning, still liquid gallium. Amazing.
Just amazing... I bet the shots would be much more immersive when done with a circular blender rather than the square one used here
To me, adding the green light last made it look like I was advancing through the vortex.
This was magnificent! The only foreseeable problem is not watching it too many times!
Get the gallium really liquid, add lazors in all colors aimed at the center instead of tubes and blow it up with a tiny amount of explosives. In my head that would look like a real trip far beyond your friendly Hobo's "shrooms" 🤩
Slo mo guys never fail to make satisfying videos.

I love that music you guys always play during slow mo moments. It's so relaxing and meditative 😌
I'd love to see the colored bits again with even more light, the shots at 9:48 and 13:06 look even cooler then the actual slow mo video at 11:23, which is a bit dark
That is because the exposure time is so short it cant get that much light
That is how the Rorschach test was meant to be. In full motion!
