Speaking as a person who reconstructs car crashes, a common injury related to air bags is compound fractures of the thumb(s) needing surgical repair with plates and screws. This is caused by driving with your thumb curled inside the steering wheel grip. When the airbag activates, your hand is forcibly moved away from the steering wheel commonly breaking the bone between your palm and first knuckle.
