    When I did my hunter/trapper safety course we had an instructor that stuck his hand in a trap on purpose, it closed on his fingers, and he said with a perfectly calm look on his face "This hurts like hell, but it won't break your bones" and went on to tell a story about how he was setting one and got both his thumbs stuck in one and had to work his way free by himself (trap was staked to the ground)

    It's funny how the big trap is illegal to use not because of what it would do to a bear, but what it could do to you and then he makes it even bigger.

    • @Baiko
      @Baiko Рік тому +108

      No, it's because of what it does to the bear. More generally, all leg-hold traps with teeth are illegal in US because it's more likely that the animal chews or wrings off the caught paw. They just cause unnecessary pain and suffering to the animal, with the possibility of not even actually catching it. Padded and offset leg traps are generally allowed in North America (though mostly not elsewhere in the world) because they're more likely to catch the animal, and because they don't cause permanent harm if for example a wrong animal is caught.

  • @Shortstuffjo
    @Shortstuffjo 8 місяців тому +12

    I've been scared for his safety in other videos before, but holy crap lol this one was insane. Even though the video was already published it still made me so tense. I was just waiting for the unsprung trap to start slowly closing with him inside it, or for one of those teeth to fly off completely, or for him to absolutely mangle his leg while stepping in or out of it, or for some shrapnel of whatever he was shredding to cut someone up, or for the entire machine to explode, sending metal and teeth and parts and coil springs flying everywhere, etc. etc... lol.
    That being said, I'm still so glad that people are out there making weird and wacky stuff like this and sharing it for the world to see. Now, thanks to TheBackyardScientist, next time I encounter a problem in my life in which building my own incredibly over-sized and over-powered bear trap is the only solution, I'll already know exactly what NOT to do in every situation!

    Here's the reformatted version for easy pasting into a UA-cam comment:
    Assuming the springs are standard car springs with an initial length of around 35 cm, compressing them to one-third of their length would mean compressing them by about two-thirds of the original length:
    x = (2/3) * 35 cm ≈ 0.233 m
    For a spring with a diameter of 15-20 cm and a 1-inch (2.54 cm) wire thickness, the stiffness (k) is typically around 27,500 N/m for car suspension springs.
    Calculations:
    1. Compression force for one spring:
    F = k * x = 27,500 N/m * 0.233 m ≈ 6,408 N
    2. Total force for four springs:
    F_total = 4 * F = 4 * 6,408 N ≈ 25,632 N
    The total force generated by the trap, with the springs compressed to one-third of their original length, is around 25,632 N (about 2.6 tons of force). That's a massive force capable of producing substantial pressure or closing power in the trap.
