  • The Wogglebug is a random voltage generator, originally designed by Grant Richter of Wiard Synthesizers. It is a continuation of the "smooth" and "stepped" fluctuating random voltage sources pioneered by Don Buchla within the Model 266 "Source of Uncertainty."
    New features in the Richter Wogglebug:
    - A much more stable clock output with the widest frequency range yet seen on a Wogglebug. The clock now goes up to about 200Hz, allowing the Control Voltage and Gate OUTputs to be heard directly as different flavors of analog and digital noise.
    - In previous Wogglebugs, the clock had been locked to the internal Sample and Hold Circuit. Now, with the Richter Wogglebug, the clock can be freed by the independent External Clock INput or the Disturb Button. Regardless of what is happening at these control points, the Internal Clock OUTput will continue to run at the specified rate, keeping it open for use as a Master Clock at all times.
    - The Disturb Button allows the Sample and Hold Circuit to be clocked manually: press to sample, release to hold. When the Wogglebug is running fast, this can slow it down. When running slow or not at all, this kicks it in the ass and delivers the next set of random values.
    - The Smooth VCO is a brand new waveform, Sharktooth.
    - The Influence input has a greater effect on all parts of the Wogglebug's psyche than the previous Ring Mod input.
    - The Burst output is more active and ALL portions of the Wogglebug are more responsive to control and touch.

    4:10 "The woggle cv output chases the smooth out and when it catches up, it woggles." I love the anthropomorphizing :)

    What is the strip of inputs or outputs in the middle of the shared system ?

    As a huge fan of Make Noise, I own most of your stuff. My entire synth is based around the workflow of your modules. With that said, would you recommend this if I already have the old design? Should I upgrade? Will this work with the new cv bus thing you're coming out with?

      Waz Hey thanx and glad you are enjoying the modules. I would say you should upgrade if you need some extra space or a master clock. But for random voltages, your OG MN WB is every bit as good.

    I’ve just taken delivery of one of these blighters… I swear I could feel it twitching inside the box, fighting to get out. I sense trouble ahead!

    They say that the wogglebug's clock is extremely stable, but I have found it to be a little shuffly. Am I doing something wrong?

    I'm an absolute beginner. In the beginning of the video the stepped output makes different tones. Is there something else connected to produce these tones? When I patch mine directly to the output it doesn't produce tones but different rhythmical blips and blops. What do I do wrong...?

      The stepped random output is patched to a pitch input on the VCO. One of the VCO's outputs is what is monitored and what you actually hear. The Wogglebug is used to change its pitch; the Wogglebug is not being monitored directly. Hope that makes sense!

    How come, if I have had a Wogglebug for more than 2 years, I never realized it had a clock output...Doh!!

    I was looking at the Turing Machine, but this also seems very interesting. Is it possible to "lock" particular sections so it loops the voltages?

    • @0oCalumo0
      @0oCalumo0 9 років тому

      Ah I fear I asked a silly question. I was hoping that the Ego/ID pot was a locking control, but I'm guessing that it's a range control for the output.

    • @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
      @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC  9 років тому +3

      0oCalumo0 For that functionality, look to the Malekko Noisering, also based on a Grant Richter design (two stepped random outputs, no smooth or woggle or random gates or VCO outs). The Ego/Id pot on the Wogglebug controls the range of the output, the recursiveness of the pattern, and (if there is something in the Ego jack) the amount of randomization applied to the input.

    If this module is so particularly musical for a random generator, why was there such lack of examples of musicality in this demo? NOt enough examples that demonstrate order among the chaos. No examples of rhythmic or melodic application. I want to hear some woggles in time. Wild, crazy and random yes, but also in time to some degree! Surely someone could do better than this demo.
