Based on your video, I got the OBD2 sensor and kept a close eye on my ATF temps. I also noticed the increase in temp when the torque converter would do it's thing and "flare". On my ute, I have found that running it in Manual mode effectively locks up the torque converter above certain speeds anyway. So when Im towing our camper, I just run it manual and never have any problems with ATF temps now. 5th locks at 80kmh and 6th locks around 100kmh so I just flick between or drop it down to 4th when above 55kmh. Easy. It does take a bit more thinking but I kind of like being engaged in the driving process. One thing I did hear, and this may or may not be true, is that a gearbox will flare more when cold to generate heat and get the ATF up to optimal operating temp. So, don't be in too much of a hurry to lock it up. A bit of heat is a good thing. (if the advice I got was correct, of course)

So I have a few questions if you will permit me. So is this something that can be left on all the time or are there times when it absolutely shouldn't be used, i.e. decelerating down a hill? You mentioned the potential fuel saving by not changing gears up and down particularly when towing, so I guess it begs the question. How many klm's / years would it take for the $1500 device to pay for itself?
I'm looking at one for my 2016 MUX. Is this something that once turned on, you can basically forget about it? ie you don't need to turn it on everytime you start the car?
The current kit has an "expert" mode, if you hold the "Cruise cancel" button in for >1sec, it will force lock. The unlock conditions in this setting are: 1) Tap cancel 2)RPM too low 3)Speed too low. The valving allows for lock in 1st gear aswell.
Hi with the auto lock up kit i already have the button in the console like the one in the kit can i just use the one button or do i still need both 2023Dmax xterrain
Just installed it. At 100km/h mine still kicks back 2 gears on a decently elevated hill. Would be nice if it didn't but I pop it into manual mode and push the gear up while maintaining cruise control
Hi there, yeah a few vids cover it in more detail, prob the brake controller vid or UHF install would be the go. They're all on the channel and in the DMAX build playlist
@@VideoShowMeHow Hi Adam managed to get it done without breaking any tabs the unit works great took it for a test drive love the manual cruise control function
Exactely the sort of video that I was looking for! If you were to have a guess... what would the % fuel saving be? (Thus giving a ROI)... and that is ontop of the gear selection on Cruise Control, transmission saving, and I've seen some of the other features they are working on... it is just win after win with this one! Well done Adam, an absolute winner of a video.
Thanks! Actual % improve would be a tricky one without testing, a lot of factors. A quick google has figures 10-20% for other vehicles but yeah would depend on so much, might have to do a test and report back at some point!
We work on the 12-18%. If purely for fuel saving... You're going to see better % with higher loads. So if you're towing 2.5t+, you'll more likely to be around the 17-18%. Say if you're currently towing using approx. 18ltr/100, We would be concerned if you're not saving at least 1 ltr, we would be ok with 2ltr, but the actual figure will be closer to 2-3 ltr. A big lap over the winter months with a decent van around this great country should have it paid for itself well and truely under 15,000kms as a bit of an example (This will vary!) The reduced engine heat, transmission heat also is a factor over-looked, ATF has a steep breakdown point once the temperatures reach over 110 degC. There is other reasons I would like to say that make this a more enjoyable drive in the D-Max. The cruise+manual gear definitely brings some harmony into the cabin ;) Hope that helps

The power chip made a massive difference, but it's still not as good as I'd want it. Super keen to get one of these kits, but just can't justify the price 😓 Need to organize a group buy or something

Hey Gary, Yes we've done the back-compatibility for the 2016-2020 models. You can select the earlier models in the check out. There is some "fruit" missing as its an older vehicle with less canbus "tech", but the basic functions work as needed.
@garypriddin9949 well, the older model doesn't have canbus buttons in the factory car. So no clear code, no expert mode. But Button can activate at a lower speed, I have one guy with a 2018 set for 58kmh on, 54 off.
Ironically the Hilux/Prado uses the same box but is tuned properly to lock up in 3/4/5/6 at varying loads. As posted elsewhere on here there is a reason you don't lock the overdrive gears hard. Anyway, it's not a ZF8HP70...
Transmission expert told me the biggest killer of the 6speed is heat when towing ,the heat is so extreme turns the oil black burns the oil over 100deg reaching 120deg up hills ,problem 1 extreme temp changers from cold 5deg morning winter start to running temp everyday towing work trailer up hill 120deg can lead to trans failed from Orings / seals failing from extreme temp changers , and excessive ware from degraded burnt oil , the factory cooler runs through bottom radiator tank and thus can create engine over heating issues towing up hill ,trans cooler before factory cooler stabilizes the temp removes excessive heat build up thus allowing the factory cooler to do its job and stabilize trans temp .it will take longer to reach correct temp with cooler in winter i let it warm up for 15 minutes before driving
@@hardcoreenduro2068 #1 killer of all autos is heat for sure, once the ATF gets over that 110/120 mark too often it starts failing and needs to be changed. If I was towing on the regular I'd 100% be fitting a cooler. The factory cooler is via a heat exchanger before the rad on these also.

Current features: Auto mode (77kmh on, 74kmh off - Can be adjusted with a laptop), Expert mode - Hold down the "Cruise cancel" button where your right thumb is on the steering wheel (Locks any gear/speed), Scan-tool level clear codes - Tap the "Cruise distance adjust" button 5 times in 5 seconds (Its not for the kit, just an added extra) Manual cruise - Hit the "Cruise RES" button to allow manual gear selection and cruise.
Careful when using LOCKUP for decelerating in any gear but 1:1 direct drive gear. The planetary gear long life reliability needs lockup OFF during decel otherwise excess thrust will cause rapid wear to the planetary gear teeth. That's the same reason why overdrive towing heavy loads is NOT recommended. 2 cents worth :)
We still believe the box is robust enough to tow in 5th/6th. We did develop an earlier "analog" kit for the same gearbox in 2016-2019 that is still in use today. You're technically right, so there is room in the strategy for lock and unlock based on loading aswell. Being in the canbus network lets you see and respond to many signals as long as you understand them.
@@Boostec-ODS Agreed since box would be designed for acceleration in all gears but it's the decel in lockup that loads/wears the planetary gear hence the manufacturer lockup OFF in that state. Intermittent use of LOCKUP (& diesel brake eg 4JX1) during decel shouldn't be a problem. I do like the idea of it but wonder why manufacturers don't do it standard..would need a stronger/dearer box maybe ?? Again, 2 cents worth :)
@@robusc4940 fair enough, we were told from a transtron eng that the coasting feature of most modern cars is actually to get better fuel use scores (at the higher cost of using yout brakes which isn't a metric that is taken into account)
@@Boostec-ODS LIGHT THROTTLE, light load, level road cruising in high gear lockup GREAT. Which of your gears is 1:1 ratio ? Eg 6 speed auto should be gear 5. That gear PERFECT for heavy towing LOCKUP cruising. More heat generation occurs during planetary gear towing than 1:1 gear. Does your owner manual suggest 1:1 gear towing for a reason ? It's a direct engine to tail shaft drive - planetary gears are simply free wheeling inside of box HEAVY load cruising in high gear lockup needs much more than light throttle. = HEAVY CONSTANT load on planetary gears even on flat roads. $5K in warranty auto gearbox repair taught me that. 3 hour flat road heavy loaded trailer towing top gear lockup constant 90kmh mild - moderate throttle, no warnings/red lights all ok till got home then took FOREVER to engage reverse. 4wD stock standard, no mods, had since new O/drive planetary gears and cages worn, trans sump full of metal fillings. $5K rebuild 15 years 250k ago taught me good lesson. Still same car and box going great but ONLY do towing now in 1:1 gear, NOT OVERDRIVE. Maybe instead of 2c worth make it a $5K worth comment :)

@@VideoShowMeHow i also have a small 7x4 steel camper trailer with clam shell pop top tent ,fridge and slid out kitchen fully equipped with all camp gear needed for weeks away , we do Fraser and beach driving ,towing on sand heats it up fast ,now its stable i dont even look at the temp never gets over 80c
Current features:
Auto mode (77kmh on, 74kmh off - Can be adjusted with a laptop),
Expert mode - Hold down the "Cruise cancel" button where your right thumb is on the steering wheel (Locks any gear/speed),
Scan-tool level clear codes - Tap the "Cruise distance adjust" button 5 times in 5 seconds (Its not for the kit, just an added extra)
Manual cruise - Hit the "Cruise RES" button to allow manual gear selection and cruise.
Thank you
Love the plug and play
Certainly makes things easy!
Hey mate can you just turn it on and forget?
@@jefferysu4761 yep, I just leave mine in auto mode
Careful when using LOCKUP for decelerating in any gear but 1:1 direct drive gear.
The planetary gear long life reliability needs lockup OFF during decel otherwise excess thrust will cause rapid wear to the planetary gear teeth.
That's the same reason why overdrive towing heavy loads is NOT recommended.
2 cents worth :)
Isn't this the same gearbox in the Hilux? I have one in mine since 2016 and 280k+ kms. No issues
It's a direct engine to tail shaft drive - planetary gears are simply free wheeling inside of box
HEAVY load cruising in high gear lockup needs much more than light throttle.
= HEAVY CONSTANT load on planetary gears even on flat roads.
$5K in warranty auto gearbox repair taught me that.
3 hour flat road heavy loaded trailer towing top gear lockup constant 90kmh mild - moderate throttle, no warnings/red lights all ok till got home then took FOREVER to engage reverse.
4wD stock standard, no mods, had since new
O/drive planetary gears and cages worn, trans sump full of metal fillings.
$5K rebuild 15 years 250k ago taught me good lesson.
Still same car and box going great but ONLY do towing now in 1:1 gear, NOT OVERDRIVE.
Maybe instead of 2c worth make it a $5K worth comment :)
Have you tried it whilst towing your van?
Love to see those results.
Not yet as van isn't in the stable any longer :)
Sorry again, I made a comment on hemz8058's comment instead of on your comment.
What year is your car? 2023?
This is a 21
Just installed it. At 100km/h mine still kicks back 2 gears on a decently elevated hill. Would be nice if it didn't but I pop it into manual mode and push the gear up while maintaining cruise control
