People who say the ‘80s was a “bad decade for music” astound me. This is pure pop confection delivered in that charming and naïve way that only ’80s New Wave/College Rock bands could deliver.

It's gonna be hard for you to find a song that you don't like... Paddy McAloon is just from another world as a songwriter. This was the single. And MTV played the heck out of this song.
I would recommend The Waterboys to you. Same era, completely different vibe. There are two emblematic Waterboys records: "This is the Sea" (1985) and their follow up "Fisherman's Blues" (1988). If you aren't familiar with this material, it's imperative that you listen to the '85 record first, because it shows you where the band was before evolving into what 1988 brought about. It was not as radical a transformation as Talk Talk's evolution from "Colour of Spring" to "Spirit of Eden", but a very marked change indeed.

I don't think I have heard "This is the Sea". I had "Fisherman's Blues" and even had the guitar song book for it. I did have "A Pagan Place", which was definitely much rockier and I didn't enjoy as much. I learned and would play the title song at musoc parties. The cover of the Yeats poem "Stolen Child" had tonnes of atmosphere.

@@maruad7577 This is the Sea was the culmination of their "Big Music" era. First record with Steve Wickham (suggesting the direction the band was going to take) and the last with Karl Wallinger before he moved on to World Party. Much more nuanced than A Pagan Place, but still a huge sound.
Fisherman's Blues is a very important record for me. It sort of opened doors to appreciate artists like Van Morrison. It was also the summit of a Celtic music obsession that had started with U2 ( I know, I know), Clannad and Pogues years before.

This is a supremely awesome song, Paddy was 16 when he wrote this apparently, he certainly knows how to write a great song. I disagree that it's the weakest song from them. I always saw Prefab as being too grown up for a lot of people. I am a big lyric person and Paddys lyrics are awesome especially in johnny, Carnival 2000, Sound of crying and Cars and Girls.

As always apart from the effortless melody and Paddy's gift for metaphor ('like old confetti), this song brings the feels. The emotion at the heart of Paddy's melodies and arrangements always draw me in.
I think I've mentioned before that once you've heard this album, listen to Paddy's solo acoustic take on these songs recorded 20 years later (available on Spotify). Stripped down to their basic melodies and shorn of that eighties pop sheen, they're arguably even more beautiful.
And to echo what a couple of posters said below, at some point do at least the title track of the utterly unique 'I Trawl The Megahertz', reading just a little bit about the backstory before you go into it. It's a remarkable story and album.

This song really needs to be heard within the context of the overall album. Sure, it's a bittersweet slice of breezy pop, but it's also sandwiched between more rockier tracks that add to the overall flavour and texture of what Prefab were about. For instance, the next track "Goodbye Lucille" delivers the right response to "When Love Breaks Down" because it's about the bigger journey. There's also a very good stripped-back acoustic version of this song on the Special Edition release of the same album which is worth a listen if you haven't heard it.

Quite nice. I had heard the name of the band but never listened to it. I should have. I would not say that it is timeless, to the contrary. It is extremely time bound. It oozes late '80s of every note and instrument and that's why I like it. It moves me back to that time when I was a student. As said, I have never heard that song before, but it put me 35 years back. They managed to do that even more than Talk Talk or Fischer Z (suggestion for you btw).

This is one of those rare occasions where the 1985 reissue mix (that appeared on the U.S. album) is better than this original U.K. album 1984 version. And even more unusual for a remix, it is slowed down a tick and stripped down of a few of it's studio flourishes. In short - leaner, cleaner, and tighter. So far as I know, this is the only place that this original mix can still be heard. Since all subsequent releases (including the single) are the 1985 remix, I can only conclude that the band was not entirely happy with this original. I could be wrong, though. Speaking of "Steve McQueen" vs "Two Wheels Good", the latter contains additional songs that the former lacks. You might want to check out the 1985 mix just to see if it alters your reaction.

So, the song I have suggested (and it's probably my favourite) is actually titled Don't Be Late (Chapter 2). I believe their biggest fan base is in Germany. Justin's already done another of their songs, On The Loose.

Nice review, as usual, Justin. A very good indie pop /indie "easy listening rock" album. An accurate portrait of a crossover of 80s British independent rock and the so called "adult contemporary music". Personally, for me, their only likeable record. It was a success here in Brazil in the 80s, a kind of "cult hit", if you know what I mean. I remember the Djs on the radios always talking about Prefab Sprout among Altered Images, Cocteau Twins, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera and Big Country, as if all these artists have a "certificate of quality from geographical origin", 😂 . It was a kind of trendy (like Seattle was with Nirvana and Co, I think) After this, they became excessively pop (in a bad way), what it's a shame. Amazing lyrics, excellent musicians and vocalists. Steve McQueen is a gem, but their only good album, in my humble opinion.

Wow! Their only good album? I'd suggest SMcQ a classic, as is 'Jordan: The Comeback'. And there's an argument for the remaining albums all being of very high standard - the song-writing genius of Paddy McAloon alone surely elevates everything Prefab above the norm.

Actually praise for the production should go to Phil Thornalley here. It's the only track on the album not produced by Thomas Dolby, being released as a single (a minor hit here in the UK) prior the involvement of Dolby for the recording of the rest of the album.

You obviously didn't grow up in 80s Britain. This was classic 80s synth/alternative/manchester scene. For a teenager growing up in 80s Britain, particularly around the Manchester area, this song is one of THE songs of the decade. In fact this album is in virtually every 'top 100 80s albums' lists you can find. Of course, your opinion is as valid as mine, and the 80s probably mean something different to you. That's music for you.

@@Katehowe3010 No 'In Camera' yet. You live in the UK - what area? I went to Europe and the UK to see VdGG three separate tours and saw the 2005 show at the Royal Festival Hall. Did you ever see VdGG or Peter Hammill? They/He play there so often I figure you might have. I live in Los Angeles and since music is my thing - I couldn't wait for VdGG to come to Los Angeles (they never have - but Hammill has a few times) - so I went abroad and caught them in the UK - and some surrounding countries. So few are into VdGG/PH that there's almost a clear delineation - when those of us are into VdGG/PH - it really is a separator or a dividing line of sorts. To some of us (me included) - in his singing and writing Peter Hammill has been able to separate himself from the other great artists to such a degree that there's a no contest or a no competition section in my brain that other artists have to literally 'break through' for them to garner my attention. Because of PH being so prominent to me - I sometimes have little patience for artists who may be 'OK' or pretty good or somewhat pleasing - but when one is into PH (me) - it sometimes just doesn't make the cut. To me VdGG/PH are top tier stuff. My others approaching that level - Beatles/Kinks/Dylan/N Young/Genesis w/Gabriel/Marillion w/Fish/ P Floyd/J Tull/Zep/K Kristofferson/John Hartford/Cardiacs/R Stones
After that would be the high quality prog that has influenced my listening preferences- K Crimson/Camel/GG/ and you know the rest. With all that however - VdGG/PH reign supreme.
