  • Would you sell your car to buy a guitar? Guitar Center's Vice President of Guitars, Michael Doyle, sits down to tell us the tale of how he came to own his original 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe in Rocket Red Sparkle and how the mods he made and the career he pursued led to a lifelong quest to convince Gibson to bring it back.
    A blend of the most popular features from the original 1975 and 50's specs, the Guitar Center Exclusive 1975 Les Paul Deluxe Tribute is built by Gibson Custom in very limited quantities - 75 each of Basalt Blue and Rocket Red finishes.

    So let me get this straight... you used an original 70’s deluxe model to develop a 70’s tribute model to not only bring back your own childhood nostalgia, but to offer that same feeling to your customers in a limited custom run; but then built it to late 50’s builders specs...
    So you basically built a les Paul standard, with mini hum buckers and a sparkle finish and called it “a 70’s tribute...” that wasn’t even built to correct specs...
    You literally did everything wrong... everything...

      Michael Power And yet oh so right in terms of the specs from a player’s perspective. 😃 And they sound amazing. I’ve tried two of them.

      You know I've thought, because they did 50s specs like idiots the headstock can break more easily. Take the best of both worlds, not do a shit ton of 50s specs on a 70s guitar and call it a tribute. That's just foolish.

      Cool guitar, great colours.
      70's Paul's are trash, adding 50's specs is a good thing

    • @matthalo89
      @matthalo89 5 років тому

      Lions Roar I don’t know that I would say they’re trash. Pete Townshend played Deluxe’s, modified of course. But they sounded good nonetheless. My uncle has a 70s deluxe and it plays good. It all depends on personal preference. I would trust an original over a reproduction model, especially after all the errors and mistakes Gibson has been making over the last few years.

    • @juno4494
      @juno4494 4 роки тому

      @@rick381v69 70s LPs are "trash?" How many LPs (from any era) have you had? My guess is zero and that you're merely parroting something you've heard from another uninformed fool. Would I rather have a '68, sure, but the 70s LPs (prior to Nashville move) blow away any LP made since then. And yes, I've had them from the 80s, 90s, and beyond.

    He said they vintage guys are looking for the vintage accuracy, and then shows the new one that’s specd like a 50’s-60’s les Paul?????
    I thought if it’s vintage accurate, shouldn’t it at least be closer to the 70’s it was modeled after????

      DividedByTime To be honest...the pancake body, volute, and 14° headstock angle are not desirable traits to many Paul fans...I think it was a good move

      Matt S yes I watched the video, I’m just saying if it’s vintage accuracy to a 1975, then I would be the same as a 1975

      DividedByTime the thing is it’s not supposed to be a reissue. They’re paying tribute to those old guitars, but taking away all of the aspects that people still hate to this day and adding more desirable ones

    I don't get it.... why give it '50's appointments if it is a '75 tribute?? 0_o

    • @90sPunkRockCovers
      @90sPunkRockCovers 5 років тому +3

      Thats why it's called a "Tribute" and not a "Reissue". Besides, who wants a pancake body, volute and non angled headstock? Find a used 70's Deluxe and call it a day if that is what you want.. This is a "modern" take on a classic guitar with in my opinion much better specs than an original. I finally bought one and love it so to each its own.

  • @coloradoguitarworks7892
    @coloradoguitarworks7892 6 років тому +4

    If you're going to call it a '75 tribute, why not build to '75 specs? The '75's were made in Kalamazoo and thus didn't have the "Nashville" abr-2 bridge. This is a mixed-up offering. Has bastardized traits from both a Norlin era geetar and a CMI era Les Paul. Why not just call it what it is--a Custom shop red/blue sparkle LP Deluxe?

  • @coloradoguitarworks7892
    @coloradoguitarworks7892 6 років тому +4

    On second thought, after playing one of these at GC in Arvada I've changed my opinion. With the exception of the lack of abr-1 bridge, 3-piece maple neck and the volute, this is the way the Deluxe should have been built back in the 70's. A great guitar.

    I inherited my uncle's 1971 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe in a cherry burst finish. Thankfully, he didn't mod it save for the Grover tuners that replaced the original tuners. Everything else is original and the mini-humbuckers just sing! The LP Deluxes are totally under-appreciated. They're awesome guitars!!!

    I'm amazed the the number of people in these comments that don't seem to understand the difference between a tribute and a reissue. The guy in the video even mistakenly calls it a reissue, corrects himself and calls it a tribute, then explains why it's a tribute not a reissue.

    Norlin era led Paul's were not as bad as some folk make out in fact 'the les Paul' and spotlight specials are some of the most gorgeous guitars I have ever seen and very much norlin Gibson.

  • @csb65536

    I think the design of these Tribute Deluxe’s are fantastic. I had a 75, or 76 (I bought in new in April of 76) in wine red. I loved that guitar until I played a friends 58 (they weren’t the price of a Mansion back then) with a thick neck as well as all the other features of the 50’s Les Pauls. That’s when I noticed the “sandwich” body, the three piece neck, and the body contour differences. I became a fan of the early Les Pauls after that, but I did like the sound of the mini Humbuckers. So, I think this Tribute is in fact, the best of both worlds, and it has me interested in Gibson’s again. Something I haven’t had since 1984. I just wish the would offer different finishes, not a fan of the sparkle.

    These guitars are some of the heaviest LPs ever !! Poorly built and Norlin Era ! These are the guitars along with CBS Fenders that started the Vintage craze, you generally have to play about 50 to find a lite one, 70s Gibson’s are not considered Vintage ! Just old !

      Here's what mine says: Ink Stamped on the bottom of the Tenon: Jan. 14th, 1975 - XX... On my Les Paul, it came with 2 Humbucker Pickups. As for the Truss Rod Cover, Gibson reintroduced the Les Paul Standard in 1975. Some 1975 LP owners have the waterslide decal on the rear of the Headstock with ''Les Paul'' ''Deluxe'' + [serial number XXXXXX]
      So go figure. Deluxe on the rear and Standard on the TRC???

    I have a 75 deluxe and this isn't one! Pancake body, large headstock, square heel are a huge part of a 75. The body shape is even different. It's long but needed for perspective. I started out on a 66 Mosrite Ventures II in 75. Two years later after saying I'd never own a Les Paul. Most overrated guitar in the world. I needed a different guitar. Couldn't get that sound. I went to every guitar shop within 300 miles and played everything including a few different Les Pauls including a studio and still couldn't get that sound. Was already deciding I should have kept my mouth shut. A guy I knew traded guitars like most change underwear. He called and said he had one I'd like to look at. Very shortly someone is going to want to smack me just like I often do over this. By now I've been hunting for over a year with no luck.The week before was the dedication of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock and they gave away a replica of his Strat. Yep, you guessed it and I still couldn't get that sound. Now you know about smacking. A couple of days and it's I've got another one for you. I took it home and plugged into my amp and I got that sound no overdrive necessary. Took about 2 minutes and I call and tell him my sister will be there with the money tomorrow. It was the first loan I took out and it was 1978. I still have that 75 wine red Les Paul Deluxe and I still get that sound. I have others but I hardly ever get them out. That Les Paul just feels like it was made for my hands. All original except tuners, nut and jack plate. I was absolutely wrong.

    So it’s not really a 70’s guitar it’s a combo 50’s and 70’s... it’s not 3 piece body, it’s 2, and not solid maple it’s split, and 50’s bent headstock.. the best thing about it is the one piece maple neck.. there aghressive be d in headstock from the 50’s causes problems.. I don’t know.. I expect it to play great but should have just re-made to the 70’s specs if you wanted a 70’s tribute.. kinda stupid of you ask me..

This guitar I bought weighs in at 10lb 4oz. Mine has a 3 piece Maple Front and the 3 piece Mahogany Neck, well a 5 piece Mahogany Neck if you count the ''Wings'' on the Headstock.
