The first Star Wars film was originally just titled 'Star Wars'. No 'Episode IV', no 'New Hope'. IIRC, the film was retitled before the first home media release, though.

I was born in 1993. My favorite Star Wars Movie is the Phantom Menace. My favorite is Obi-Wan.

On your Star Trek five points ranking i would give episodes 3 and 5 a five, episodes 1, 2, 4 and 6 a four and episode 7 a three.
Ewan McGregor is THE only reason i ever re visit Ep. 1 17 yrs later ..which is basically the opening mnutes of act 1 and the closing minutes of act 3 ..literally lol (and John Williams "Duel Of The Fates " theme)
I wish that Count Dooku was Obi-Wan's master and Qui-Gon wasn't in the movies.

Obi Wan in Star Wars: I don't seem to remember owning a droid. Obi Wan had R4and was around R2 a lot. How could he not remember this?

How did Leia remember her mother in Jedi? She died during child birth lmao. I could go on for ages. Surely kids who have watched the movies prequels first will be completely underwhelmed by the reveal of Luke's parentage in Empire. nothing makes any goddamn sense haha.
Obi-Wan was never the same since R-4 got his head ripped off by a buzzdroid

I like episodes 2 & 3. But episode 1 is still the worst for me
I saw the original Star Wars 76x in the cinema, and the crawl said "A New Hope" but Episode was added for the first rerelease when the 2nd trilogy started planning.
you guys got the scenes mixed up...anakin is denied training before he saved the day in phantom when he blows up the thing ...also I see the you have much fear as in anakin cares too much he lets his feeling emotions get him clouded so hes more susceptible to the dark side due to it so they deny his training cause they see his future is blury....fear leads to hate which leads to pain and suffering...and that fear of losing his son ironically is what saved the day in return of jedi cause in the moment his son calling to him to help after saying he will forgive him and allow him back into society where he can make up for what he did touched his heart and got through to him in that moment of high emotion to break free of the darkside and make his own choice for once again free will reign supreme from the former slave due to love...its poetry..also I'm glad it wasn't spelt out cliche with anakin being a troubled youth....it shows anyone can turn dark and while padme and his mom and his own feelings get in the way he ultimately turned evil on his own he just needed the catalyst and excuses..remember he stayed loyal to the empire.. ..he even chokes padme and being that weak willed flimsy on his emotions of caring too much is what draws him into the dark side cause unlike yoda or luke hes weak to his feelings and they pry off that...thus the do it scene while memed makes sense in context cause at a emotionally stressful moment after already having conflicting feeling anakin goes evil for power
You can have a queen and still be democratic nation, as does pretty much every country with Royal heads of state in this day and age. Love the podcast, you guys are Pensky material through and through.
The balance of the force works like that.
The jedi follow the will of the force. Sith bend the force to themselves. So when sith use the force they bring imbalance to it
I'm glad you guys didn't waste my time by bashing like jar jar this entire review like most people as if we haven't hear that before you broke down what you liked and didn't pretty well but calling obi wan anakin twice was unacceptable and no one caught it?..come on guys ...your slipping..

Saw this movie opening night. I was 19. Thought it was just okay at the time. I've only seen it once more since then. It sucks.
Hey Wes you mentioned Rotten Tomatoes giving 3 a higher score than 6. The problem is your viewing all critics. Any jerk who has a column in a newspaper or has a web page with 500k readers gets their score posted there.
You need to check the 'top critic' scores. Those are the top 10% of critics, the ones on national TV, or in major newspapers and magazines.
+jonbradbury This is true, but they're still remarkably similar. Jedi is at 76% and Sith at 67%. RottenTomatoes is not the best way to compare quality, but it's crazy to me that so many critics think Sith is more good than bad.
I remember being super-psyched to see TPM and leaving feeling vaguely unsatisfied. Kid Anikin was obnoxious, the droid army imbecilic, and I never believed in any of the politics.
Qui-Gon needed to do a few Jedi tricks on Tatooine, which Anikin quickly mimics. Like using the Force to raise a wrench up off the table, then be in total disbelief when Anikin does it. Then I'd have had Ani do what you suggested -- use the Force to reconnect that coupling that came loose (pod race) -- but also to CHEAT. I mean pick up a rock with the force and plant it right in Sebulba's engine. When asked point blank about it after the race, I'd have Ani lie to Qui-Gon's face. The journey to the Dark Side needed to start right away.
Amadala is supposed to be speaking in a Trans-Atlantic/Boston Brahman accent. .... the accent Mr. Feeny talks in in Boy Meets World, lol. The 'point' of this was Carrie Fisher also used the accent in a New Hope when she was in princess mode, thats why she too sounds different in the next movies. The problem with all this is Natalie Portman is terrible at the accent and sounds like some weird robot.

This flick, and gor the most the entire 2nd trilogy, is nothing more than a demo rell gor ILM's new toys. The story exists to set up locatikns and situations gor digital cameras and CG rendering. Oh, and bonus is the entire story arc transfers to video games and toy shelves.
the ewoks were supposed to be wookies i hope.... that would be the good version of return of the jedi where it takes place on a planet of wookies.... everything gets better.
and that brings up the gungans.. i think the gungans are supposed to be a race of dark side force users... that may sound wierd but palpatine comes from that planet, and jar jar was supposed to be darth jarjar... but theres more to it, the gungans have those force shields and they have those lightning balls they use as weapons.... they are like sith alchemy and i think its a hint that they are hiding under the viewers nose
