I don't have the skill/talent he does, so I still face challenges (still can't walk her in my feral cat infested neighborhood, can't get past the cat issue) She does great walking in the park, she has been to dog parks. We rescued another dog and they are besties. I have tried getting some video of me walking her without luck, but if I find someone to film me I will share it for sure. The main takeaway is that she was always a very good girl, I just needed help finding how to interact with her energy.

yes! and my dog is a rescue street dog and is exactly like Eva. Although there are also plenty of street dogs who are easy to handle. Rescuing is the way.
Watching leash reactivity on two separate days with the same dog is wonderful. We can see the difference between the initial walk and the dog’s reaction the following day was so much better.
After yesterday's video, I walked my 7 month old puppy using your method. It was so detailed and the sudden stops, to check if he was still 'with me' were amazing. Easily the best and most comfortable walk we've had. We're not perfect yet, but your videos have made a massive difference. He didn't tire himself out with the constant pulling, either.Thanks a lot!!

This IS the way! I have owned dogs all my life. Nothing in my past experience prepared me for adopting a large street dog. No obedience class training methods, pushing, pulling, kneeing... nothing stopped him from jumping, ( knocking me down a couple times), mouthing, bolting/pulling through doors and gates, etc. I was so concerned I ordered a gentle leader and muzzle. Before they arrived I studied multiple videos of yours. MY 1ST try using your leash method turned my dog from horrible mannered nuisance dog into a gentle well behaved joy to be around. I follow all you instructions. This IS the way. Even my 8 yr old granddaughter can walk him now, and hug him like a teddy bear. It's a magic method. THANK YOU I will never need muzzle or gentle leader now.
Dang! I expected to see some progress but this is amazing! I feel like Ava had her session, then spent the rest of the day absorbing and figuring out what the lesson was about. Joel is the GOAT of dog trainers but I have to give some credit to smart Ava too!
Here here! Joel is the Goat. Cesar us great, but Joel's methods are straight forward and have direct results. It seems anyone who applied themselves could ultimately achieve the same. Or can always have at least a phone consultation with Joel. Joel... you are the goat.
i have a husky and because of beckman's videos I am able to instill this awareness of the leash and owner into him. My dog used to to 'stop' more than me, now i 'stop' more on him and it checks out. He is more responsible for his reactivities and responds to the leash very well. Understood, during training it is about the leash and not you.

AMAZING from start to finish. Her whole behaviour more relaxed in the office. Ava trusts your leadership already after one session with her. She can relax, knowing you are there to guide and protect her. I wish every Ava could get a Joel as a boss.

thanks....i tell my 12 week old puppy those are your friends too 😂 she's a crazy puppy on her leash, but i've done mini sessions, then she is rewarded to sit by the gate and look out front, not complete with vaccines...but she's already calming down. as a rescue i don't know was done to with a leash, but maybe just her personality....love your videos. I haven't trained a dog for 20 years so you are reminding me all i learned from a fantastic trainer 20 years ago.
please carry on with updates on her. My dog is an adult street dog I rescued here in Mexico and is very very similar to her, it's like looking at my dogs behaviour. Your walking method has already improved my dogs' obedience and reactivity, I would love to see what you do next to help her.

Yesterday I watched the video with the big dogs and the 1 I believe was Eva Charged the fence And bark at the dogs. I have 2 dogs that charged defense constantly barking at our neighbors when they let their dog out . I use the . I use the technique that you showed us where you go get the dog drag it back make it look at you and say sit This technique on both of my dogs and oh my goodness it worked I can't believe how much I have Barking at the fence and it worked Thank you again For all your effort and patience and given us these videos for us to learn and be a much happier person with our dogs thank you Sincerely Debbie

Me too! This might be what I have been missing. Also ordered a gentle leader after using slip leashes. We do great during the day but in the evening when it's dark is a whole new thing to work on.
Joel mentioned distance, and it makes sense. Get them under control when you're far enough away and before they go from a 5 to 10. Took my boy to the dog park a couple of weeks ago. All we worked on was just walking up to the fence w/o going in. He was still too strung out for me to get inside. The other dogs didn't like his energy either. When it's too dark to see farther away, all you can do is watch for your dog's body language.
@@yuletak mine is great off leash. the problems are only there when we have to pass dogs when she's on leash. And than 200 meters an be too close for her

This has been so wonderful to see! As an addition to this series, I think it would be really interesting to see a video with the owner (not necessarily with this dog). I feel like many of the reactive dogs I know are triggered by possessiveness of their owners.
I’m no expert! I just have a rescue dog who I didn’t set strong enough boundaries with in the beginning of our relationship, and she basically views me as the ultimate resource that she needs to guard. She doesn’t guard food, toys, etc, but she guards me bc I provide all those things and I provide her with love, security, etc. She doesn’t have enough confidence in my leadership bc at first, I didn’t set up our relationship to show her I was the leader, so she thinks she has to take it upon herself to protect me from anything that might be a threat (such as other dogs). reactivity can be caused by a number of reasons like genuine fear, frustration about the leash, being hypersocial and undersocialized, poor impulse control, possessiveness of owner, etc. My dog doesn’t react to other dogs if I’m not around, so I know it’s about protecting me. Anyway, this leash method along with a lot of desensitization work, confidence building exercises, and hardcore obedience training have all helped immensely. Good luck!

However, for one dog it’s a possibility what I thought was ‘prey drive’ might be protective in some way. I’m her safety, not her leader. wow, it's like she is a different dog. We love her eyes, she is such a beautiful dog so happy she was rescued. I shared the video with my husband and he had a question, why do you bend down and pull? If he has answered that question in another video can someone please link it? Lastly, you should do a tshirt that says, "I just don't care". My husband and I laugh everytime you say that, we love how you are a no non-sense man but have a heart of gold and so funny. I can't tell you how many times I have laughed at work watching your video.
The bend down is so the correction is horizontal, instead of up. If it goes up the dog counters with its weight, and it's less effective. Also on regular collars it can hurt their windpipe.
@@littledogRonnie that was funny about the goat and had me laughing too. Yesterday when he asked "Why don't I talk to her...why would I, she doesn't listen?" had me rolling. My husband turned me and said "I feel his pain, you don't listen either" which caused me to laugh harder.
amazing it is all about timing and your own mind set nice to watch someone who knows what you are doing (on a side note: my son found a dog he might walk on his own, we can't have a dog ourselves. just for fun as he loves dog. I know the owner loosely, she got the rescue 10 months ago, walks him on a harness, he keeps pulling like mad.. it is a Husky mix so" that is what he loves..." (argh, and I am afraid I can't correct her dog (mis-) handling as she is the "professional" owning the dog. just a collar and this stopping exercise would work wonders)

Our walks are miserable because there are so many squirrels in our town. Every ten yards or so another blasted squirrel appears. And, boom !, like a rocket, out shoots my 10-month Lab-Shep pup.
Hello, I admire your work here on youtube. Your whole channel has been a gold mine for me and my puppy. I have a question that I am not sure was answered, or talked about here. How do you transition from the gentle leader to the normal collar? I have observed very good progression using the gentle leader but it isnt the same once its gone. Don't get me wrong, it's still better than it was without trying the gentle leader, but I was wondering if there is a way in which you can transition more smoothly from the gentle leader to the normal collar. Thanks again for the free treasure you are sharing here on your channel.
Wasn’t sure if he did a video on that since your comment was five months ago. Most likely you have to transition in small increments. Always have it available if things get out of hand

Wow that was a great improvement. Even her body language seemed alot more relaxed. Just goes to show you have to keep at it with these things. My dog was similar to this and the first thing the trainer taught us was proper leash walking and after, everything else seemed to fall into place.

I almost thought my dog has a twin. My rescue Queensland Heeler goes bananas when we come across other pups or bikes you name it. The humane shelter said she was "fearful". She did respond to your method. She has made behavioural improvements in other areas, but reacting to another dog on leash is not ine if them. What length leash do you use and I guess it is not necessary to give a command (leave it) when correcting? Thanks for the videos. Hopefully I will be able to walk her around the neighborhood when other pups are about.
After seeing your video I followed your method with my 11months gsd, I see improvements! I see that he hesitates and he comes back to me before I pull the leash. Thank you!! What do I do when he freezes when he sees ppl and dogs, should I pull him or let him sit? He gets so nervous with everything, should I try to take him to a crowded park that way he can get used to ppl around him a bit?
Do you think we can train our dog in time for a puppy to maybe help show the ropes? We have a 5 year old pit/boxer mix we've had for 3 years that was a rescue and we adopted her from foster owners. Fun part we're getting a puppy in 2 to 3 months, but my current dog isn't greatly trained and is very defensive barker (barks but backs up in process) for new people and barks like crazy if people are even walking down road with hair raised. She jumps on people who enter and barks when people try to leave (I guess saying don't leave). Really my thing is where should we start the training to crack down to have better life for her and us and before the puppy arrives and maybe shows the wrong things. Please a reply would be greatly appreciated even if its just a list of a good order to start. Also yes I know its OUR fault for letting her be like this for so long, but I wanna change this so that way we don't have these issues and to be able to have people over more often.
Love this method, and have definitely seen progress in the door and release method, BUT, would you say to apply the same level of correction to small dogs? Been seeing a lot of scares of tracheal collapse and my dog seems to start coughing / difficulty in breathing. For reference, this is a Pomeranian just over 5 pounds.
I think his method would work on smaller dogs ("this is the way"), but seems like it would be harder to implement. When he does the *pop* you can see he goes low and to the side, so the correction is taking them to the side. With a smaller dog, the amount of pop would be lessened, of course, but harder to do it at that proper angle. Any correction would seem to naturally be up and put that pressure on the front of the throat. Would be very informative to see how he modifies his stance for shorter dogs.
I notice all these walks are on the road, is that what I need to do when walking my reactive dog ? When we walk on grass or even next to it and the side walk it’s like the corrections don’t matter because he is always focusing on the next patch of grass 5 feet in front of him.
I forgot to mention that on your last video with her I didn’t really notice a difference between regular high definition and your 4K camera. I would not use a 4K camera if it constantly heats up because then you could be missing filming some valuable footage
So is it normal for 9-month old standard poodle to seem to do good on walk,, seem to be nice, well-behaved dog and then…like they regress to not having any training, lunging at end of leash, barking at everything? I’ve heard you say that 9-12 months are tough periods; I get concern because here in this video you said should see progress. It is discouraging to see the roller coaster we’re currently on & keep wondering what I’m doing wrong. Also can’t walk (or exercise ) as much as I’d like to due to really cold weather up here (20 and snowing).

This has been so wonderful to see! As an addition to this series, I think it would be really interesting to see a video with the owner (not necessarily with this dog). I feel like many of the reactive dogs I know are triggered by possessiveness of their owners.

I’m no expert! I just have a rescue dog who I didn’t set strong enough boundaries with in the beginning of our relationship, and she basically views me as the ultimate resource that she needs to guard. She doesn’t guard food, toys, etc, but she guards me bc I provide all those things and I provide her with love, security, etc. She doesn’t have enough confidence in my leadership bc at first, I didn’t set up our relationship to show her I was the leader, so she thinks she has to take it upon herself to protect me from anything that might be a threat (such as other dogs). reactivity can be caused by a number of reasons like genuine fear, frustration about the leash, being hypersocial and undersocialized, poor impulse control, possessiveness of owner, etc. My dog doesn’t react to other dogs if I’m not around, so I know it’s about protecting me. Anyway, this leash method along with a lot of desensitization work, confidence building exercises, and hardcore obedience training have all helped immensely. Good luck!
@@motidda345 Thank you so much for sharing your experience! My rescue dogs are also reactive for many reasons, as you mentioned. However, for one dog it’s a possibility what I thought was ‘prey drive’ might be protective in some way. I’m her safety, not her leader. So… Still lots of work to do on both of them, but acknowledgement is the first step when we look in the mirror :) Good luck to you too, and thank you 🙏🏼
wow, it's like she is a different dog. We love her eyes, she is such a beautiful dog so happy she was rescued. I shared the video with my husband and he had a question, why do you bend down and pull? If he has answered that question in another video can someone please link it? Lastly, you should do a tshirt that says, "I just don't care". My husband and I laugh everytime you say that, we love how you are a no non-sense man but have a heart of gold and so funny. I can't tell you how many times I have laughed at work watching your video.
The bend down is so the correction is horizontal, instead of up. If it goes up the dog counters with its weight, and it's less effective. Also on regular collars it can hurt their windpipe.

@@littledogRonnie that was funny about the goat and had me laughing too. Yesterday when he asked "Why don't I talk to her...why would I, she doesn't listen?" had me rolling. My husband turned me and said "I feel his pain, you don't listen either" which caused me to laugh harder.

That's why the 'walk' with your dog is so much apart of your relationship! One walk made such an impact...now every one after this will only get her in a better and better place mentally and behaviorally!
Our walks are miserable because there are so many squirrels in our town. Every ten yards or so another blasted squirrel appears. And, boom !, like a rocket, out shoots my 10-month Lab-Shep pup.

How do you transition from the gentle leader to the normal collar?
I have observed very good progression using the gentle leader but it isnt the same once its gone.
Don't get me wrong, it's still better than it was without trying the gentle leader, but I was wondering
if there is a way in which you can transition more smoothly from the gentle leader to the normal collar.

Wasn’t sure if he did a video on that since your comment was five months ago. Most likely you have to transition in small increments. Always have it available if things get out of hand

Wow that was a great improvement. Even her body language seemed alot more relaxed. Just goes to show you have to keep at it with these things. My dog was similar to this and the first thing the trainer taught us was proper leash walking and after, everything else seemed to fall into place.

I almost thought my dog has a twin. My rescue Queensland Heeler goes bananas when we come across other pups or bikes you name it. The humane shelter said she was "fearful". She did respond to your method. She has made behavioural improvements in other areas, but reacting to another dog on leash is not ine if them. What length leash do you use and I guess it is not necessary to give a command (leave it) when correcting? Thanks for the videos. Hopefully I will be able to walk her around the neighborhood when other pups are about.
After seeing your video I followed your method with my 11months gsd, I see improvements! I see that he hesitates and he comes back to me before I pull the leash. Thank you!! What do I do when he freezes when he sees ppl and dogs, should I pull him or let him sit? He gets so nervous with everything, should I try to take him to a crowded park that way he can get used to ppl around him a bit?
Do you think we can train our dog in time for a puppy to maybe help show the ropes? We have a 5 year old pit/boxer mix we've had for 3 years that was a rescue and we adopted her from foster owners. Fun part we're getting a puppy in 2 to 3 months, but my current dog isn't greatly trained and is very defensive barker (barks but backs up in process) for new people and barks like crazy if people are even walking down road with hair raised. She jumps on people who enter and barks when people try to leave (I guess saying don't leave). Really my thing is where should we start the training to crack down to have better life for her and us and before the puppy arrives and maybe shows the wrong things. Please a reply would be greatly appreciated even if its just a list of a good order to start. Also yes I know its OUR fault for letting her be like this for so long, but I wanna change this so that way we don't have these issues and to be able to have people over more often.
Love this method, and have definitely seen progress in the door and release method, BUT, would you say to apply the same level of correction to small dogs? Been seeing a lot of scares of tracheal collapse and my dog seems to start coughing / difficulty in breathing. For reference, this is a Pomeranian just over 5 pounds.
I think his method would work on smaller dogs ("this is the way"), but seems like it would be harder to implement. When he does the *pop* you can see he goes low and to the side, so the correction is taking them to the side. With a smaller dog, the amount of pop would be lessened, of course, but harder to do it at that proper angle. Any correction would seem to naturally be up and put that pressure on the front of the throat.
Would be very informative to see how he modifies his stance for shorter dogs.

I notice all these walks are on the road, is that what I need to do when walking my reactive dog ? When we walk on grass or even next to it and the side walk it’s like the corrections don’t matter because he is always focusing on the next patch of grass 5 feet in front of him.

yea right? I would too. We need to remember sometimes dogs are not robots. My dog freaked out at a horse the other day. Fair enough.
I forgot to mention that on your last video with her I didn’t really notice a difference between regular high definition and your 4K camera. I would not use a 4K camera if it constantly heats up because then you could be missing filming some valuable footage
So is it normal for 9-month old standard poodle to seem to do good on walk,, seem to be nice, well-behaved dog and then…like they regress to not having any training, lunging at end of leash, barking at everything? I’ve heard you say that 9-12 months are tough periods; I get concern because here in this video you said should see progress. It is discouraging to see the roller coaster we’re currently on & keep wondering what I’m doing wrong. Also can’t walk (or exercise ) as much as I’d like to due to really cold weather up here (20 and snowing).
