FIRST LOOK: Porsche 911 S/T - Ultimate 911 with GT3 RS Power | Top Gear

- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- Welcome to the Porsche 911 S/T. Designed by Porsche as a present to itself on the 60th anniversary of the 911 (there’s 1,963 planned in honour of the birth year), the S/T revives a grand old name from 1969 when a 911 S was sprinkled with a touch of motorsport fairy dust to become the S/T - a fearsome competition car that did without the aid of big wings and hefty aero. A kind of beautiful Frankenstein’s monster, the S/T was a competition car, but not prolific.
The modern S/T follows the same path, though with much more modern vim. Mounted in the back is the naturally-aspirated, 521bhp 4-litre boxer from the GT3 RS coupled to that short-ratio manual (with shorter cogs than a GT3). There are no big wings bar a short Gurney flap on the electric rear spoiler, which itself doesn’t raise quite as high as other 911s. The rear-wheel steer system is ditched to save weight and complexity, and the bonnet, front wings, ‘cage, rear anti-roll bars and shear panel underneath are all carbon fibre. The wheels are centre-lock and magnesium, the glass thinned to shave precious pounds. Even the battery has been on a diet, and now consists of a lightweight race-style lithium-ion unit. Cobble all this together with the slim carbon bucket seats along with weight savings from the powertrain and clutch, and the S/T becomes the lightest production 911. With a kerbweight of 1,380kg, it’s 40kg lighter than a manual GT3 Touring.
There are plenty more facts and figures, and who better to show Top Gear magazine’s Tom Ford around the new Super 911 than the man behind it and the boss of Porsche's GT division, Andreas Preuninger.

Andreas Preuninger is the kind of guy every car manufacturer needs. I hope he stays for many more years because the cars he is putting out are amazing.
I love the way Andreas subtly throws shade on EV’s! He’s right - there is no way any electric car can ever have the soul of a car like this. Get a real 911 while you still can
Very eloquent
What Andreas is doing at Porsche with the 911 is friggin awesome but do you think he may have quietly pissed off a few RS owners with his sales pitch on this new ST?
@@markrichards5928 I don't think…Porsche has always had different versions based on the same car, no wonder that on the GT3 and other models, several versions were born. However, the GT3 RS remains the most technically extreme, which this ST, despite being beautiful, is not
@@lorenzoc.5351 I completely agree however I don’t remember a previous variant being released after the GT3 RS and being marketed and explained its role in the way Andreas is with this new ST. I’m sure we’ll see it on Internet forums or hear about it somehow if RS owners start complaining. What’s your opinion on this ST anyway? Looks like a cracking car to me!
Andreas just gets it. His dedication and focus to what he wants a car to deliver is incredibly apparent. He's invaluable to the company and a huge reason for it's commercial success with the GT P-cars. Cheers to Andreas and his team once again.
Andreas always got what they deserves.
Andreas Preuninger has become a legend similar to Mercedes' long-time S-Class boss Dr. Storp - and that's saying something. He has now been director of the GT class for 23 years!
Believe it or not but there are Americans who think that a Corvette is the same as this.
The way they have kept the rounded rpm and speed dials is the most impressive, everyone has gone mad on flat tablet design, especially Benz, they have kept to their goals over time and always succeed
@AlexanderChristopher-qg4kl how much 4 star can someone sniff!!
This is what a modern BMW CSL should have been. Man, Porsche is absolutely killing it these days.

That's what I keep asking myself, "Hey 😢

Personally, I don't like where the 911 evolution is going. I liked the 997 generation more than the 992.
It has the same name but the current 992 is drastically different than the early 60's 911.
If you thought 3 RS’ had crazy markups, imagine this….
It's gonna be absolutely stupid. And I'm honestly here for it. Have all the rich slow poke fools pay out the nose for it. Cause I'll never afford it.
I think this will be invite only, considering there will only be 1963 units. But no doubt mark up will be insane
People would kill to pay markup if any became available…
Exactly. Nonsense item aimed at speculators not at drivers. Pure marketing exercise

Andreas Preuninger's approach to creating cars that feel unified and harmonious is a true testament to Porsche's dedication to their craft. It's not just about raw power or flashy features; it's about crafting a driving experience that resonates with enthusiasts on a deeper level. That level of cohesion and connection is what sets Porsche apart and keeps them at the forefront of the sports car world. Andreas Preuninger is as much a star of this show as that 911 S/T. The man actually _understands_ what cars are for: To be enjoyed when driven and when looked at, all with 911 reliability. It's not all about the numbers! Keep doing what you're doing Andreas. Us petrolheads are rootin' for ya!
I still don't think the 992 is quite the looker that the 991.2 or better yet the 997.2 is for the modern cars, but leaving that and the electric steering debate aside... what's not to like? This sounds like the ultimate 911. Almost a perfect sports car. The pin striped interior feels oh so right. I'll likely never have the chance to own one of these, but if I could have one I would in an instant. What a thing. Eagerly awaiting what the 992.2 ends up looking like and how they try to top this.

Definition of perfection nowadays! Awesome job Andreas!
This is literally the perfect machine. Absolutely love it! And damn did they hit it spot on with a manual too.
Agree. And also has V12 Turbo Mark II.
This is the 911R of this generation, the car that brought manuals back to Porsche's GT car lexicon. It is also now the most alluring package Porsche sells, according to me. Fewer gadgets and gizmos, less weight, less flash, but more involvement than any other modern Porsche on sale. That is also to say, more involvement than almost every modern car on sale today, period.
*Thanks Andy.*
I like how the body style evolved over the 911R. This body style is way more aggressive and interesting IMO, also looks like it was developed with aerodynamics in mind, a big performance leap over the R just considering the aero improvements.
Love this car, but it's more involving than a Spyder with less weight and no roof? 🤔
Gt3 RS is the ultimate Porsche... According to SCIENCE !!!🧪🔭😎

Yes, this is a nice concept. Personally, I prefer the Ferrari 812 Competizione, though..

I'm not the biggest Porsche guy in the world but AP is a joy to watch and I think he summed up what they do better than any other company @ 8:30. Everything about fast 911s don't just work together, they belong together. It's why so many believe they make the best sports cars in the world and why theyre so rarely beaten.

Porsche is getting it! Full driver involvement. It's why I love my 911 manual. Perfect. Wish I could get one of these...
The rear steering delete makes it pure perfection 👍
Why?
@@Sideways_Singh it’s an artificial assistance that has nothing to do in a car meant to involve the driver for a concentrate of driving pleasure rooted in Porsche history otherwise its door full open to infinite list of amazing technical assistances that would take the car in something else but not this. Clear as mud i know 😅
Agreed! So happy they really focused on the analog vibe. That coupled with the gearbox changes they spoke about. It sounds like just an absolute pleasure to drive. There is something special about a car that is refined but a beast to drive. That "get it right" sweet spot that melts you into the seat thinking "nailed it" is just so satisfying. Well done Porsche on the concept. Without a doubt, I'm sure it will deliver. ...it is Porsche, after all.
@@Sideways_Singh because as a driver, enthusiast or professional, there is something very special when you get it right. That feeling of "being one" with the car. A bull rider does not get assists, and when they nail their ride you will hear them saying things like "I was just one with the bull"...same holds true here. Rear stearing (in a sports car) is more of an assist (like stability control) than anything else. This is why you will hear enthusiasts or "purists" mention, though it makes you faster...it takes something away from the pleasure of driving. These assists give you a confidence you otherwise should not have. The skill is not on the driver but in the tech/car. Without them, there is a respect. You respect the car, it's power, it's agility, it's ability...like walking up to that bull. It can kill you....but if you get it right (and it's all up to you) the sensation of pleasure is 10 fold. ;) it's why the F40 is so beloved.
@@bachirbattache2997 idk the rear wheel steer just makes it feel like it has a shorter wheelbase it aint helping in any way, it makes it feel more like a air cooled 911 when they were really small, I think they shoulda kept it.
So its a GT3 RS - Touring. Got it!
This is more special than that. They seem to have made extensive changes.
@@almac9203The thing is though the new GT3 is more than a handful for the road, the GT3RS is quite frankly overkill anywhere outside of the race track. The question is ST excessive (in the real world) considering that the GT3 Touring does the same job for less money. Does that extra spiciness worth it?
@@TymaDem this will be more special than the GT3 touring with the power plus carbon fibre bodywork and special set up. Whether the 'extra specialness' will be worth the extra money will be up to the individual to decide. I think this special car will end up costing less in the long run because it will appreciate in value more than the GT3 touring so from an investment perspective it will totally be worth it. This will be a better investment than Bitcoin and a hell of a lot more fun! I don't think regular customers will be able to get one of these cars as they will be sold out straight away to VIP customers and flippers.
That’s a work of art. Porsche keeps putting out better and better cars that are both powerful and beautiful

Absolutely fantastic journalistic questions asked by Tom, and wonderful answers by Andreas. What a car.
Tom could be right, probably the ultimate Porsche 911. Keeping that GT3RS engine, manual box, but especially the lightweight clutch and flywheel really gives me the “fizz down below”. Wunderbar, just wunderbar 👌🏼
It's basically a new 911R. But they're calling it an ST because calling it an R would piss off the collectors. What I'd like to see is a 911 GTS 4.0. Something that is made for the road, has a back seat, and has the sound and pleasure of a 4.0 NA engine and manual Trans for daily commuting.
Andreas has one of the ultimate dream jobs in my opinion. The GT department of Porsche has been turning out some great cars under his leadership. I hope he sticks around for many years to come.
ez job right? just rebadge the 911 for the 1000th time
I'm sure that these RS will be trading for over a million $ very soon. This is probably the best version of the 992 today. I love that it has a proper manual transmission. So Very cool. Thank you.
Porsche knows what driving really is!
For most, cars are mode of transport, but they aren’t just that, it’s a feeling that only few can describe.
That’s exactly what I told to a dealer on my last test ride, “when I got down, I was happy but certainly not enough to turn back and look at it”
if jeremy clarkson was to review this car, he would make all of us fall in love with the thing, i can't stop mourning the old top gear, it used to make car guys so enthusiastic about automobiles, and it will forever be missed.
He'd also mention how much he hates the 911 😂
Exactly it misses the energy they used to have. Even the editing…
When are you fanboys going to get over the end of your show? Even women don't cry this long when their favorite shows end.
Just when I wonder, ok what can Andreas and the GT team do make an already PERFECT car even better. They ALWAYS amaze me. GT3, 911R, and now this are my all time dream car!

Tom Ford is a great presenter. Liked him back in the day when he was with Fifth gear. Hope to see him more on this channel!
The Porsche car surely has a perfect design at the exterior part with some cool texture and I can literally describe that the car wheel does really look fabulous
Wow, this is my new favorite 992 911. I like the subdued and low key looks. The GT3RS NA engine and the lightest 911 title is dope too. The many select tweaks all around the car add up and creates its attraction though. The front fender vents, the magnesium wheels, various light weight parts, interior variety and manual transmission all make this THE 911. I like that it’s not necessarily race focused yet has the GT3RS engine. It’s no doubt more comfortable and less flashy than the GT3RS, yet it’s more road focused than the GT3 Touring. What a slot within the lineup to occupy. A cross between the S and the Touring. That makes sense.
