- The complete build play list of this project starts at. • Porsche 944 S2 3.0 16 ...
The car is a 1991, 944 S2. We removed the 3.0, 210HP engine and installed a Chevy LS, L77, 6.0, 450+ HP engine. We also did some suspension upgrades to make it a better daily driver and occasional track day car.

The v8 sound is intoxicating. I just picked up a 944 from a Copart auction to tinker with. I'd thought of the LS swap for the car after I get the old engine back running and the car driving again in 2021. I'll go back to the beginning of the playlist to see where the madness all started.
Thanks for watching, good luck with your project! Even if you don't LS swap it, 944's are great fun.
Nice build! I really like the S2 as a starting point. I’m looking for one soon so I can start my own
Thanks! The Turbo and S2 are great platforms to start with. The small, light, powerful V8 turns them into Supercars!
My '84's shifting is identical to your 944's..
Crazy...
I'll be doing the swap soon..to me, the LS is the motor that should have come in the 944 to begin with...!..✌
What kind of gearing does the car have? At times I felt like the car had really short gearing, and at other times it seemed as though you could really stretch it out. Different rear end?
Awesome car, btw.
Thanks!
You are absolutely right about the gearing being to short with the original trans. This is an old video. I have a rebuilt 951 trans in it now with an early NA 944 5th gear and an LSD. That made all the difference in the world! You can actually drive it on the highway now, LOL. Check this out.

im getting one soon hopefully and i wanna put an ls3 in it
What did you do for wiring everything up.? A painless harness.? The stock 944 harness.? Or does it have to be specific to the motor being put in.. I have an 83 that I'm now seriously considering doing the swap into..
I'm running an MSD Atomic LS system. It comes with a plug and play harness.
Just so ya know, It's gonna take a lot of parts to get an 83 NA going with a V8. It can be done though!
Good Luck!
@@stokerdon1020 Thank you for the reply.! I'm understanding that ultimately I should use the turbo transaxle with limited slip, but when you say alot, would you kindly point me in the direction of those parts that may be needed, or a generalized starting point.? Thank you again, my friend..
@@geoffreygreenman699 Bottom line, It's a Porsche. They constantly engineer and develop their cars. When they make a Turbo version of one of their cars, it has A whole lot of new, improved parts over the non-turbo model. Take a look at the September issue of "Porsche Panorama". That will give you a good idea of what I'm talking about. They have a layout of all the parts that are different on an 86 944 Turbo vs non turbo. I was very lucky to find a 1991 S2. It is the most developed 944 that they made. I still had to upgrade a lot of parts though. Check out my build thread.

@@stokerdon1020 Very cool, thank you, I will check that out for sure..
Hey so I’m thinking about doing an ls swap on a 944, is there anything I should know before I start?
Yes! A whole lot of stuff that you should know! Hears a link to the full playlist on this car.

How did you get the tachometer to work?
I used a little box called a Tach-Adapt. It converts the 8 cyl signal to 6 or 4 cyl signals
Hi Don. That little joy ride has got me all amped up to keep plugging along on my own 944 LS conversion.
Try getting a manual brake master cylinder instead of using the modified power brake master. The piston size is different and designed for manual brakes. I picked up my kit from Chase Bays with manual bias valve and the hydraulic clutch adapter kit.
Wasn’t much money at all. But I cant give you a system review for it yet as my conversion isn’t rolling yet.
That's an interesting idea, properly proportioned manual brakes! I will check it out. Now get out there and finish your conversion! I can't be the only one doing this.
These are what I chose to use for my conversion.

@msPaulaA1 How is it going with that brake setup you referred to?
Perfect job ! Now is the 944 a strong car with a big sound ! Is this swap in the USA in the car documents registered ?
Yes, in the USA where LS engines are cheap.
The car is registered, insured and inspected. No other documents needed!
Just get in and GO!
@@stokerdon1020 In germany is this not easy to enter in the documents for a legal drive.
I drive next 5 and 6 cylinder classic coupe's a 928 S4 manual 5-Speed with a intact 5.0 V8 Engine.
This 6.0 V8 is a nice option for 928 with a ruined engine.
This 944 with a V8 is for me better than original with only 4 cylinder and a shitty sound.
@@YachtmasterV8 I agree! The 944 engine is far from Porsches best. Noisy, buzzy, vibrates, big and heavy. On top of that power output is very low.
Is this build a big step up from a basic C5 or C6 stick?
Not sure what you mean. Corvettes maybe? If so, it's not a Corvette, it's a 944. So if you like Corvettes it would not be a step up. A 944 is not as big, heavy and cumbersome as a Corvette. Driving a 944, or any old Porsche, is nothing like driving a Corvette.
I see. So the end result is better than a C5 or C6 Z06? I have seen 911s with LS power plants that look phenomenal. But I always liked the transaxle Porsches. I had a 928S stick I really loved it.
@@sprezzatura8755 I don't know if it is better, but I like it! Corvette like power in a Porsche 944 with no weight penalty. What's not to love?
Nice set up. Lots of power and torque. But as you mentioned, no power brakes or steering, a bit of sacrifice if you can live with that. Just curious, what octane do you run in it and what is your fuel mileage like now. I’ve got a 87 turbo and gets roughly 600 miles per tank. I was cruising with some Corvettes about 100+ mph (give or take) and we travelled just under 300 miles and they needed to refuel. I had about half a tank and didn’t need to refuel. It was fun.
I haven't really driven it enough yet to get an idea on fuel mileage. It's all apart right now for the trans upgrade with better gearing so the mileage should get better. I put 91 or 93 octane in it.
600 miles per tank??? That's 42.86 MPG, not really possible in a 944.
@@stokerdon1020 A lot of 944s had 20 gallon tanks. Bringing mine from Bakersfield to Northern Colorado I had two tanks hit 700 miles, I think I was getting around 35 mpg at 80, but that was heading east with a tailwind through Utah. (That car was a 16 valve from 87 so I think the mileage was slightly worse than the 8 valve I had prior)
@@magiccheeto Thats very interesting. I never heard of different size tanks in 944s.
the sound is really mean, did you keep the orig Porsche gearbox ?
Yes, you have to. There is no other gearbox that is stronger that will fit in there. I looked into a Corvette but it's WAY bigger and would require some serious cutting and re-engineering of the back of the car. This build is all about keeping it a 944 but giving it twice the power.
@@stokerdon1020 so the stock gearbox can handle all the power of the ls? i thought that most people rebuilt it to handle more power or they go with the stock turbo gearbox.
@@pots_n_panz9597 Yes, you should start with a Turbo Box, it is stronger. I swapped mine for a turbo box, had it rebuilt and added reinforcing plate and the NA 5th gear. Now I just have to put the car back together.
@@stokerdon1020 excellent build!
@@curiousumscientia3648 Thank you!
It will be even better with the new gearbox!
How much does it cost?
It depends on what you want it to do. This one is for daily driving to work and occasionally track days. I did all the work myself and I think I spent between $30K and $35K to do the whole car. It would be pretty easy to spend a lot more.
Take it to keystone run it down the track set a time( love it)
Not familiar with Keystone. My plan was to take it to Summit Point during 944 Fest, but that got canceled due to COVID. At this point we won't get to do a track day til at least Spring. I still have some work to do before we can safely drive it at a sustained 100+ MPH anyway.
I be watching for that video (Keystone Raceway Park, New Alexandria, PA.)
Choose.. 3.8 Buick or LS?
The 3.8 doesn't make much more power than the Porsche 3.0 we took out. What would be the point?
The 6.0 easily makes twice the power with just a cam swap and it weighs less than the 3.8 or the 3.0. That makes the choice easy!
What about the 5.3 or 4.8L ls
Nothing wrong with them except the make less power. I wanted twice the displacement and twice the power. I ended up with more than twice the power but I can live with that!
The tubo 944 what year would you use thks
Any year Turbo will work great. 1986 has slightly different suspension that requires early offset wheels. Normally when looking for a Porsche you go with the latest year possible. Porsche is an engineering development company more than a car company so they keep developing the car every year. If you can find a Turbo "S" that has the strongest transaxle and would be an excellent choice. Or you could go with the later "S2" like I did.
Omg Beautiful
