Your diagnostic method of locating a problem should be one taught in auto classes. You've proven in all of your videos how important it is to know how something works and what should and should not be expected.
I really enjoy the fact that you take the time to show what to look for in your diagnosis. I too am a shop owner for the past 20 years, mainly diesel repairs and transmission overhauls, and with technology being the way it is, it's nice to be able to see a visual diagnostic. I learn more by watching, than by reading a overly written book using scientific terms I truly don't understand. Lol! Anyways keep up the terrific videos, and I'll do my best to support you by purchasing products from your website. Thanks again!!!! I'm in west Texas, and hope one day to come visit your shop just to shake your hand, you have actually reinvigorated my belief in why I opened my own business.
Thanks Eric! I used your "test and not guess" method on my old beater pickup and saved a bunch of money. Instead of throwing parts at it I tested it and paid $10.67 for the broken sensor and passed inspection. A cheap set of back probes is something I would have never bought without your insight. Thanks again!
I recently was air to a 2001 5.9 Durango, a relative gave me. Worn down and battered. At first, it had a real bad vibration that went away on right hand turns. That was natural to my ears since I know what and how bearings blow out. I bought both sides because that is the way I roll. Then the power steering pump and system started howling. We know what that means. I ordered a new pump and pressure lines. I appreciate men or women that have this in their blood. You, my video friend, are gifted and please believe me. I leave you with gladness in my heart as my new but old dodge / cadilac. Your instruction is clear and to the very point in the matter. I claim victory but not without sharing the credit to a true and honest, without the bullshit. Thank You my friend..
nice comment. your screen name made me remember a summer fishing trip to lake cumberland (TVA reservoir) when i cast a jitterbug over a log laying in the water and got a good sized largemouth bass that jumped several times before throwing the hook. nice to have fishing memories with your dad after he is gone. take care BJB
I can tell the vintage of your videos by checking the condition of the bill on your Jeep cap. Lots of repair jobs have been seen by that cap. Oh and BTW you are not allergic to work. I can tell you love your job by the care you take in your repairs.
This is such a great because the expert diagnosis leads to a cheap and simple fix. Without reference to a known 'good' waveform or knowing what the amplitude range should be a low amplitude waveform from a failing sensor can lead you you in the wrong direction.. I've seen cam and crank sensors look good when cold but as the engine heats up the wave form steadily diminishes until the ECM can no longer effectively see it.
The dealership I bought my pickup from told me that I had to replace my transmission so glad I was sceptical and seen your video they was going to charge me for a transmission and make a gigantic profit but thanks to your video I was able to find the sensor and replaced it my truck is fine now thanks again
i just got a 98 dodge dakota n i don't know shit about cars. my truck is shifting hard into 2nd. supervisor at work said he had the same problem, and it was just a sensor. he said it was the throttle position sensor, but now i'm pretty sure he meant this one. thanks a lot!
Hey Eric, thanks for another very useful video. It's very good that you take the time for diagnosis and it's even better that you share it with us! Greetings from Germany!
love the channel was watching Eric the car guy and your channel popped up thanks for the great info just wanted to let you know their is a trick with these trucks that you don't need a scanner to get a code I have a 2001 durango and the set ups are pretty much the same if you have the key in ignition turn the car on but stop before it starts,do this 3 times leave it in the on position and it will give you all codes if you have lights on in the dash, this has been working great for me hope this helps someone with either a durango or Dakota in these years, great job again
So much so that I got nervous when he held up the tablet. I kept trying to look around it so I could still see the road! Minds, at least my 57 year old one, love to play tricks on us! Thanks Eric O!
Should have thrown in a Transgo kit in that thang. You'd Love it. Really addresses some of Chrysler issues with 42/46/47 trans. Three part valve body...got be a good tech
Great Video Eric!!!....thank you for showing us!!!...this subject is very important!!!....automatic transmissions are very expensive!!!!....greetings to all at SMA!!!...and a Hello to Hanna!!!! :) :) :) :)
thorough , accurate, nice , never underestimate knowing what your doing....clearly a underestimated trade skill! Just because your comfortable with how stuff sequences does not mean it is not a skill..decade or so in the making ...definitely prevailing wage skills, which means not poor but not rich! Comfortable living and retirement in honor that is the scale for your skill level....
mrwcp63 had a first gen 1997 Dakota V8 4x4 for 15 years. On engine I only did a water pump and ac compressor, fuel pump, and catalytic converter. Other just normal services. Truck was delivered to dealership with a faulty battery and a missing engine oil cap, bought it one week into sales start. Gas mileage finally forced me to move on 8/11 city/hwy was best I could do. Sold in 2013 One issue that was never resolved. Random dying of engine while driving, had to put it in neutral and restart went fine with no further dying for months?
LOL, at first right before you said something about the roof rack, my first thought was you pulled out in front of a big rig and he was laying into the horn. (ha, evidently, I was not the only one)
i am watching ur 5 years load video, 4 years, 2 years videos. ru posting latest videos? me from Pakistan. i am ur great fan. u mention all things in detail. i like ur videos very much. thanks
It drove smooth after repair, but that cable needs to be clamped down. Another Great Video! 91 GM pickups had the magnet in the sensor exposed inside the trans. "There's your problem!" When it failed, it went to 2nd gear limp in mode. The replacement was the upgraded sensor with the magnet covered for both the input and output shaft speed sensors. I changed both. No more problem.
+South Main Auto Repair I live in Louisiana. i can tell that salt takes a toll on the under carriage on the vehicle's up there during the winter. Great video's I have watched everyone you have uploaded.
Most of today's automatic transmission issues are the valve bodies and those solenoids/springs/check balls/valves. Some folks will take their brand new vehicle over to a transmission service center and have a "shift kit" installed to correct the OEM faults that come brand new with vehicles. One brand, TransGo, does the research and offers OEM similar shift patterns yet the valve bodies are getting upgrades so they do not degrade to the point that they damage the other parts of the trans. Even on used cars, a shift kit could be an answer to restore a transmission into a better state so they will last a longer life. This is obviously not the case in the video but could be considered something to do one short time in the future. I'd have to say, most shops or 80% of them, wouldn't have spent the time to put the meter on the sensor. One day, it will get them into trouble and they will have to scratch their heads awhile to get a correct diagnosis after making the wrong call.
Love easy ones like that! :) I actually got one today believe it or not (usually nothing is easy around here, lol!) - the infamous Ford F-series overdrive wire chafe in the column deal. A '01 F-250. I found bare copper showing about a half inch from the shift lever - wore right through. That explained the complaint of random downshifts on the highway along with the 4k RPM engine speed. I just did some liquid e-tape, then wrapped the entire 3-wire bundle from the shifter to the plug in electrical tape. Fixed! Better than $100 for a whole new lever. Truck only has 55k on it, but it was a plow truck. She's pretty crusty underneath. Body ain't too bad though. Probably a million drive-to-reverse-to-drive shifts on that one. Also shot some 134a in her, and got the A/C working again. My neighbor is happy. :) Now to the REAL crusty '99 Powerstroke F-350 tomorrow. Had a hanging caliper, but pedal went to the floor as soon as it got here. Guaranteed brake line issue on this one. Frozen pins on the caliper I'd bet too. There are no rocker panels left, and the swiss-cheese bed was tossed for a flatbed. Oil pan has already been JB welded, and 2 years later it's seeping again - she's not long for this world, lol. Just one more season of plowing! Too bad too - that engine is fantastic. Just runs and runs.
If you are looking for informative transmission videos let me know. I am subscribed to a gentleman in Texas I believe who does fantastic trans work. He shows you how to diagnose, take apart and completely put back together.
Hi I have 03 Dodge Dakota 4.7 AWD 4x4 had the transmission rebuilt been having issues with hard shifting shop says nothing wrong and won't drop the pan to look could it be bad solenoid pack no codes it shifts up throws u back in ur seat when I let off the gas it gets clunky not sure if this is right place to post questions but running out of options lol
Woow very good explanation I have 2008 dodge Dakota and won't shift in 3 gear after oil change I got code about gear ratio in 3 gear I will try to change sensors
I have the same issue for years and no one, even dodge where I bought if from had that answer for me and I have booked in for them to do the work but ya same issue out of first and fourth so I believe that your answer will be right. Thanks very much eh
So I got the sensor replaced and it did not fix it, you said it was 95% chance that it was the sensor in the transmission. What could be the other casues?
looking for more video ideas? parts testing, (thermostat i a coffee maker) does it pop, sensor fail verification proper 100-200 k services, silicone window tracks, disinfect a hvac system, all rubber chassis and suspension components i bet after a year or 2 it would be hard for you to think of ideas for new videos. take care guy, thx for all the info, you helped bigtime
The load pro leads have a hollow point on the end that fits nicely on those pins. I noticed u had a bit of trouble getting those leads to stay put, I'm just saying. Any who thanks nice vid!
Eric is it the same 4-5 dislikes that pass an opinion on every video you produce . If you turned lead to gold they'd probably dislike that too !! Darren uk
I've 04 dakota 4x4 4.7L does it have a transmission speed sensor? If it does where can I locate it? I ask because I've replaced speed sensor on transmission and the ABS sensor at the rear-end, with no speedometer.
I just got my first truck 2006 Dodge Dakota SLT quad cab the closest thing I guess to what your reporting is when I give it throttle it seems like there is some jumping in the back wheel it's not burning out or nothing but sometimes I'm guessing there's a little shutter in the leaf springs the shocks back there might be worn out then again I could be traveling over the bad parts of the road without even knowing it as in no way does it feel the same as my old beat-up Subaru the issue I've been having is with the temp light for the transmission spent all night working on it pulled the oil pan but I messed up the new seal for the transmission filter just ordered two new sets doing a full fluid swap and filters as I'm thinking my temp light was a circulation issue and maybe a issue with the transmission oil being a little on the older side of course this truck transmission is a lot more complicated than my old little Subaru
I thought it was a truck at first, then after a couple seconds i thought it was maybe the heater blower motor (I had one making that sort of sound recently.)
That is beautiful country as you test drove her, Eric! Hard to imagine in the 1770s, the British were crawling everywhere near you. Ever found relics from that era?
So true. I used to live in Manhattan and always drive to Poughkeepsie. In the fall it's so gorgeous. My brother now lives in Rochester and I look forward to making some drives around that area.
I live in central MA, right near one of Ben Franklin's Post Road mile markers. Lots of homes built in the 1700's around here. Mine was built in 1850. My ol' man has a metal detector, and has found many lead minie balls, all white with oxidization, in parks and fields around central MA. Can't use the detector on state property without permission anymore - this was in the late 80's. Glad we went when we did. Lots of history around here that will probably never be found now. Too bad our state government has taken this state in 180° the opposite direction that our Founders did. :(
+Smitty Smithsonite I also lived in Chalmette, LA where the Battle of New Orleans took place, again between the British, about two miles from my house. Kick myself for not using a metal detector.
Wow, yeah must be a ton of stuff in the ground there. I've heard of guys finding minie balls with bite marks in them from field surgery (or amputations) after battle injuries. Amazing.
3:28 you show the output speed sensor, input is in front Question, did 200K maintenance, new speed sensors, pressure sensor, new accumulator plate and new solenoid pack. Still no 3rd or 4th.... Suggestions?
G'day Eric that's a really nice place where you live it looks a lot like where I live here in Tasmania. Another interesting video, one thing I would like to ask you out of all the vehicles you deal with which would be your favourite machine in regards to parts, build ect. Thanks mate regards John
Hi Eric I have a 2001 Dakota v6 auto 4x4. I went to change the speed sensor like this one. And it's not there. I have a screw in style I guess. Does the screw in style work the same
Is it possible to have a bad input sensor without a check engine light? Because my 04 dakota hits very hard, almost braking when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I just had a rebuilt transmission put in my 06 Dodge Dakota slt 4x4 and when u come to a stop at the light and start to go the 1st time it shift hard do u think this could be whats causing it to shift hard?
Should be about the same. The input should be high impedance, so whether or not the sensor is connected to the PCM shouldn't really make any difference. Unless the cable is shorted, of course.
I went and looked at a '95 Ram 1500 for sale, 120k, no rust, excellent shape. I scanned it and it showed a pending P0740. the owner was upfront on the phone, said he already had the trans dropped by the local shop and had the solenoid replaced the truck drove excellent at highway and city speed, no bucking or hard shifts do you think they just forgot to clear the code?
I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota and it seems hesitant in 1st gear, and 4th gear it seems to have to change at about 3500 rpms, do you think the same problem is with mine? Or a speed sensor?
I have a 2002 Dakota 2wd and have been experiencing some odd things going from 3rd/4th. The engine will continue to climb in rpm while I am being gentle on the gas and I know it should shift... I simply get it above 2,000 rpm and let my foot off the gas pedal. It does shift and this is not a fix just a temporary crutch to drive the truck. Hope this helps, also I have no check engine light on. Going to do a transmission fluid and filter change in the coming week, and if that doesn’t fix the problem then I will just replace the speed sensor... found it as low as $12 on line. If you do the swap then let us know or I end up fixing with either method I will comment agin and give the results. Thanks
My dodge dakota has a problem where I stop and it will stay idling a little bit higher than it should only a 2 second period all the time will it be the same part or a different part? mines a 1997 dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 2 wheel drive truck
Any one know the part number for it or what he replace is called or a link I have this issue with my 2001 Durango 4.7 I replace the throttle body sensor but it was also the turbine speed sensor when I used the scanner

Yes,the local mechanics in my area would probably replace the transmission !
Go find more honest or a better mechanic
Your one of very few mechanics in p burg that I trust, great job!!!

Would have been cool to see the symptoms and the fix. Great video as always Mr O!
Nice quick diagnosis & repair. It'll definitely jerk you around when the speed sensor or line pressure sensors fail. Enjoying the videos!

Thank you so MUCH, that’s exactly what is was. The local bank/ shop said it might a complete transmission rebuild !! You’re the man !
Hey Eric, nice diagnosis and repair on the Dodge.
Hey Eric, thanks for another very useful video. It's very good that you take the time for diagnosis and it's even better that you share it with us! Greetings from Germany!
Another great example of your depth of knowledge and experience. Thanks Eric!

skylark19721 yes your right, its called flash out codes. Some other vehicles have a jumper
How does he drive around with that buzzing wire without going insane. I thought a semi truck was honking at you until you said it was the wire.
Seconds after hearing that I was already getting annoyed. Wanted to smash that and toss it..
cranks the radio
Thanks buddy ❤
Just found your channel via Eric the Car Guy. Digging all your videos.
The realism is just insane. It felt like I was driving that Dodge. :)
So much so that I got nervous when he held up the tablet. I kept trying to look around it so I could still see the road! Minds, at least my 57 year old one, love to play tricks on us! Thanks Eric O!

One issue that was never resolved. Random dying of engine while driving, had to put it in neutral and restart went fine with no further dying for months?
My 98 ram 318 has done these a few times randomly at low speeds. I need to look into it
LOL, at first right before you said something about the roof rack, my first thought was you pulled out in front of a big rig and he was laying into the horn. (ha, evidently, I was not the only one)
i am watching ur 5 years load video, 4 years, 2 years videos. ru posting latest videos? me from Pakistan. i am ur great fan. u mention all things in detail. i like ur videos very much. thanks
Cool video, that noise on the roof rack would drive me nuts!
It drove smooth after repair, but that cable needs to be clamped down. Another Great Video!

That vantage is a pretty neat tool
Remember back in the day when transmissions could shift using engine vacuum? Less stuff to burn out.
this mans called them money lights im dying
Thanks for using the Vantage. It gives me hope I'll get good with mine.
Another great video. I've been wanting to get one of those vantages for a while.
They are great. keep your eyes pealed on ebay
Good tip - I'm going to be looking myself. Gotta get that Autel too. I REALLY need one. My 9 year old Auto Xray AX7000 ain't cutting it.

I know haha I have been down in NYC
I lived in Connecticut; it too has spacious skies. we use to sled down the hill near my house, at least a two hundred foot slope. ..memories
Hey man thank you so much your video did the trick, I changed the sensor shifts good and rpms a lot better.
Thanks for another good vid☺

Thanks Eric. Yet another great diagnosis and repair. I would cut that roof rack off first chance I got.
Thanks! I does not always make that noise
Finally, automatic transmission attached. Small but enough to start.
If you are looking for informative transmission videos let me know. I am subscribed to a gentleman in Texas I believe who does fantastic trans work. He shows you how to diagnose, take apart and completely put back together.
If it's Hiram, he knows his stuff. subscriber myself
Anthony Beaudry Yes sir that's him. I didn't want to mistype his name in the first comment.
Hiram Gutierrez, мy cousin.
Is he really your cousin?
@SOTO'S yes the solenoids are a more common problem then a speed sensor..
Hi I have 03 Dodge Dakota 4.7 AWD 4x4 had the transmission rebuilt been having issues with hard shifting shop says nothing wrong and won't drop the pan to look could it be bad solenoid pack no codes it shifts up throws u back in ur seat when I let off the gas it gets clunky not sure if this is right place to post questions but running out of options lol
got to get me one of those vantage fantastic video Eric keep up the great work
I replaced the same sensor on my 2005 Kia optima and it worked perfectly fine
Woow very good explanation I have 2008 dodge Dakota and won't shift in 3 gear after oil change I got code about gear ratio in 3 gear I will try to change sensors
Very common on the 90s to 2001 1500s also. We change a ton of them. They have the screw in plastic sensors. The tips always seem to crack on them.
Gotta like the easy ones now and then. Thanks for the video.
Good fix and excellent aproach to get rid of the problem completely as u said test it and fixed thanks ERIC, FOR THE GOOD INFO CHEEERS.
Mine was the shift sensor between first and second!
Gordon Mckluskey Which sensor is that? I’m having this same problem.
F yeah, dude... You are the MAN!! Nice work. Love it
good job Eric, sam
I have the same issue for years and no one, even dodge where I bought if from had that answer for me and I have booked in for them to do the work but ya same issue out of first and fourth so I believe that your answer will be right. Thanks very much eh

Simple useful test --- good stuff
Nice one thanks Eric O
when is that honda truck video comeing out?
Great job. Nice to have an easy one for a change.
Good test info and great video. Thanks
I've 04 dakota 4x4 4.7L does it have a transmission speed sensor? If it does where can I locate it? I ask because I've replaced speed sensor on transmission and the ABS sensor at the rear-end, with no speedometer.
The Caravan always had wonky sensors. Were prone to stick in low gear.
SMA on vacation ? Haven't seen a new video in more than a week

I thought you had pulled out in front of a truck
until you explained about the noise.
I thought it was a truck at first, then after a couple seconds i thought it was maybe the heater blower motor (I had one making that sort of sound recently.)
This is why it is key to have mechanically inclined friends in your life who happen to own scan tools lol.
Do you sill get the code PO715 with the speed out sensor or what code would you see thanks. Jeff
Another great fix Eric O Woy to go
42,000 subscribers! Yeah.
Awesome, thanks Eric

Upstate New York. It is pretty there, I miss it a ton...
Amazing.
I’ve replaced 3 of them in my 2011 Dodge 3500 Dually Longhorn.
3:28 you show the output speed sensor, input is in front
Question, did 200K maintenance, new speed sensors, pressure sensor, new accumulator plate and new solenoid pack. Still no 3rd or 4th.... Suggestions?
Nice video again thanks
G'day Eric that's a really nice place where you live it looks a lot like where I live here in Tasmania. Another interesting video, one thing I would like to ask you out of all the vehicles you deal with which would be your favourite machine in regards to parts, build ect. Thanks mate regards John
Great job again
what engine and trans? ive got P0500 and have replaced the pumpkin speed sensor and i believ out puyt sensor but am struggling to locate input sensor
Hi Eric I have a 2001 Dakota v6 auto 4x4. I went to change the speed sensor like this one. And it's not there. I have a screw in style I guess. Does the screw in style work the same
I have a 04 3.7 Dakota, 2wd, replacing the shift solenoid. Looking for a video, or assist please.
New York,? Does this bucking hard shift & high rpm while driving possibly speed sensor
Cool. What's a repair like this cost? Having mine looked at in a couple days.
Thanks a bunch man.
Mr. O I’m having these same shifting issues with my truck it’s a 1999 Chevy k2500 with the 5.7l 4l80e 4x4 would this problem be the same as mine ??
I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra that has the same symptoms. Wonder if I just need to replace my speed sensor?
Is it possible to have a bad input sensor without a check engine light? Because my 04 dakota hits very hard, almost braking when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I just had a rebuilt transmission put in my 06 Dodge Dakota slt 4x4 and when u come to a stop at the light and start to go the 1st time it shift hard do u think this could be whats causing it to shift hard?
OEM replacement sensor or aftermarket?
Thank you. Will check it out.
I am intersted in knowing what should have been the voltage output from connection to the sensor if the connection was bad
Should be about the same. The input should be high impedance, so whether or not the sensor is connected to the PCM shouldn't really make any difference. Unless the cable is shorted, of course.
I got the same problem I just bought a 05 Dakota 3.7 shifting hard on 1 and 4 ..how much did this cost any idea?
I went and looked at a '95 Ram 1500 for sale, 120k, no rust, excellent shape. I scanned it and it showed a pending P0740. the owner was upfront on the phone, said he already had the trans dropped by the local shop and had the solenoid replaced
the truck drove excellent at highway and city speed, no bucking or hard shifts
do you think they just forgot to clear the code?
