  • Myth vs History: Does Belief Need Facts? Do you need evidence to believe? Does spirituality need scientific validation? Uncover the relationship between myth and historical truth in esoteric and Pagan paths. How do myths shape spiritual beliefs, and what happens when they contrast with historical evidence? Does belief require evidence? We'll examine the Triple Goddess's origins and her influence on modern spirituality. Delve into Jung's collective unconscious and the allegorical teachings of Dante. Discover how personal visions and spiritual experiences intersect with, yet differ from, historical narratives.
    Key Questions:
    - Can myths shape spiritual practices without historical evidence?
    - What's the role of the Triple Goddess in modern spirituality?
    - How do Jungian archetypes explain spiritual myths?
    - Can personal spiritual experiences be valid without historical backing?
This video is a must-watch for those navigating the intricate web of belief, myth, and evidence in their spiritual journey and for anyone curious about the balancing act between historical fact and transformative personal belief.

📜 Great video. I think as someone who is a pagan and really into history I try and seperate the historic way of thinking from the pagan way of thinking. One is scientific and driven by data and the other is based on my subjective experiences and what I connect with. Both I think are useful in understanding the world, at least to me.

The practice of historical research is less a search for the truth than a search for a good story. From a sorcerer’s point of view, belief is irrelevant. What is important is avoiding an active disbelief. Dr. Rhine and his parapsychological research team documented an effect they referred to as the Sheep-Goat effect. “A Sheep-Goat Effect occurs when participants with positive attitudes toward psi, score significantly higher on a psi-test than do those with negative attitudes.” (Thalbourne, Michael A. The Common Thread between Esp and Pk. New York : Parapsychology Foundation, 2004.). A practitioner who cannot suspend disbelief may find their ritual or spell operating in reverse. Dr. Rhine noted that the "Goats'" results were worse than chance. They were actively negative. (ESP is a specific application within the same phenomena as Magick).

I highly appreciate your stance that historical significance and spiritual significance are equally valid, they simply occupy different spaces. Many people, myself included, get defensive because in today’s age of science and scholarship many people outright bash the spiritual and religious. And the defensiveness of those people often stem from extremist religious beliefs and the trauma such things have caused.
Just… everyone live and let live please.

The separation is tough to hold. Especially for those that have an Ego..! For once you hold to an Idea or Revelation, the individual tends to take any disparaging comments as a Personal attack.. One must maintain that the Idea and/or Experience is Personal & Individual, and that only the Symbols maybe Universal. And even at that, It is yet to [or may never] have historical support..📃 Good Work!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🖖🏾

Thank you so much for introducing us to the word mythopoesis. 📜 I've been in a process of very carefully disseminating and adjusting my relationship with existence following a personal mystical experience, for the purpose of maximally broadening my perspective and opening my heart fully to it all; as an artist, the most natural way to do that was the creation of a personal mythos which reflected that experience and the revelations that it continues to bring. As always, friends before me have beaten me to the punch when it comes to the academic conception and application of such a thing.

This subject matter is pretty much at the center of a lot of what I've been thinking about for the last decade. Objectively, I'm an empiricist, I believe in the scientific method, proper scholarship and evidence. Subjectively, well... Like Alan Moore said, the one place Gods and devils undoubtably exist, is within the human mind.

This is a very interesting and important discussion, and one that is very difficult to have with many people, including both my academic colleagues and my co-religionists, unfortunately.
There is a further dimension to it, I think, in terms of making certain "interpretations" of evidence/facts. We can all agree that certain things may be facts and constitute hard historical evidence; but how to then interpret them? There's generally lots of options, and yet some people settle on one or another preferred option, and instead of saying "This is the interpretation I prefer," they try to say that it's "true" because to them it is "based on evidence," but they seem to neglect their own choices and preferences in how their conclusions are arrived at from that evidentiary basis.
For example: we know when Antinous died, and how (drowning in the Nile); but why? There's no clear answer, though there are several options that arise from the evidence (with its various flaws, biases, contextual particularities, and caveats). What ones people decide to emphasize often say a lot about many things besides what the actual history might be. And these are not the only historical matters that can be debated where the cultus, and especially the human life, of Antinous are concerned, needless to say!
Celtic matters are even worse, alas...!?! (I have a billion stories!)
I am reminded, though, of a discussion (which I think you were involved with) on Dr. Justin Sledge's channel, in which he was talking about how "consciousness" and everything that people say about it are really just beliefs, not really facts...and I agree. It's one of these things that gets on my case with some of Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove's recent material, including the Robert Bigelow "best evidence for the afterlife" contest and such that happened a little while back. If any subject continues to require belief to fill in the blanks in the theory, then I don't think it really counts as "evidence" in the historical or veridical sense. Sure, a bunch of things have happened and been documented, but whether these are mediumship sessions, near death experiences, or any number of other things, they don't necessarily require the conclusion that what was going on is that someone was in the afterlife, etc. I could go on, but I'm sure you understand very well what the issues involved are.

    • @shadowdragon3521
      @shadowdragon3521 6 місяців тому +2

Yes, it's important to recognize that historical facts are just interpretations of the evidence and there can by many different interpretations depending on the historian's biases.
You can imagine every piece of historical evidence as a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. The Historical facts are then the pictures that emerge from putting that puzzle together.
The further you look back in time, the more missing pieces you will have thus leaving more room for interpretation.

    • @phillipbernhardt-house6907
      @phillipbernhardt-house6907 6 місяців тому +1

@@shadowdragon3521 Indeed...but it's often not even the facts themselves, it's the missing pieces that can never be recovered which then get filled in...or, in many cases, the "why" behind the existence of a certain fact that is inferred. These are the things that really need to be interrogated as to why that is the best or most reasonable answer in many instances.

📜 this relates to an interesting challenge esoteric or occult traditions sometimes have for modern analysis.
We (in many cases) have more verified knowledge than the people who established our traditions, and adapting or reconciling the fundamental beliefs of a time or place to a modern setting can in some ways undermine established process of initiation or learning.
Do you have any advice on how to use critical thinking (often thought of as 'modern') without condescending or disregarding traditional wisdom that apparently conflicts with established empirical knowledge?
In other words: Do you have any advice on retaining academic or scholastic integrity along with cultural humility?

📜 Angela this is was the best. I'm not a scholar but I'm a wiccan and present things for a Unitarian Universalist CUUPS chapter. You have inspired me to not only give my presentation but to give references. This group tends to be intellectual and I want them to get out of their heads and have experiences. One way to reach them is to presents historical facts and mythological stories and then encourage them to make it their own. Yes the ARE different, but as you said both are valuable.
I would also like to have you talk about working with deities. Are they gathered energies that manifest with what you know about them, then allowing them to speak to you. OR Do they exist in their "own lane" and you tap into what their reality.
I tend to be more in the first group. I want to look up information then have it speak to me.. I'm realizing that this is two distinct groups of practice. You are amazing

Well, as a few dry Jewish secular scholars stated the Lesser Key of Solomon and the 72 goetai demons were early bronze age attempt to define human negative psychology.
Most people tend to forget bothering to learn about the 72 virtues.
Then you have 12 standardize months of the year, x12 years you get 144 months divided by two equals 72.
Rooted in 72 .. gods .. of equal good and bad mental traits just later broke down into two different beings, with a bunch of added b.s.
2.) Now as for Chaos Magic, ..
( prolong eye roll and deep breath draw out sigh .. )
a.) concept of King Arthur the Pendragon. So what is one's inner beast, dragon, demon, .. wrym ?
b.) Hindu divine serpent that wraps around and grows up your spine setting off your chakra ?
c.) Then you have Superman family sigil, which later evolved into being the serpent of deceit trap within a diamond of truth becoming a symbol of hope.
Build that with the Green Lantern mythos of emotional color spectrum. Yellow being fear that leads into anger rage of red, surrounded be blue of hope.
Also the Superman S - shield can have an inverted pentagram drawn within it. Which is surrounded by five sides and five points, covering ten virtues.
For my half azz measure, the inverted pentagram in Europe before the protestant factions started to take over, was drawn above sick beds to draw G*D's divine healing energy to the injure person. My oh my how things have change over the years.
3.) Other than having some hard-core debates over Wonder Woman Amazon history backgrounds over the years. It comic books compare to historic myths of such. Such as Wonder Woman mother is the daughter of Aries. Bronze age household clay statues of family ancestors and gods mix with the makers blood.
The emotional child energy backing of the symbols of Superman, Flash, Green Lanterns, and even to Batman has a lot of energy for Chaos mages to tap into.
Then you have Thor from Marvel movies.
4.) For science fiction, over the years of Superman rocket crib flying to earth drawing radioactive kryptonite behind the craft. After the 1990's that would require a wormhole drive craft.
Also the Krypton concept of the Phantom Zone/ hyperspace was updated during DC52 to be a byway to Hades Greek underworld. Then you have D&D Ethereal holding the inner planes of elemental energy where the negative and positive energy planes connected to the Astral planes of heavens and underworlds.
a.) Star Trek warp is surfing hyper subspace where Star Wars hyperdrives drop the ship into subspace for faster travel, like the Borg transwarp lanes.
DC Phantom Zone/D&D Ethereal is just another form of subspace. Other historic Ethereal/Astral was both regarded as being the star filled heaven's night sky and not mental thought projecting to different locations.
b.) Now your head is going to really start to hurt, bronze age zodiac stuff of planets and what nots with math base on 12 and 60.
We now have better measurement numbers. But in short.
i.) The distance between the earth and its moon is one centimeter in scale. Other than earth can fit 15 times within the distance of the moon. Also the moon is about 1 light second from the earth.
ii.) 60seconds is 60 centimeters which is 2ft. I am 6ft with a 22in shoulder span with finger tip to finger tip arms spread out is 6ft. Distance of 3 light minutes.
We are about 8minutes/ 15feet from the sun? At night walking around a campfire with a lit glowing cig ember showing where the earth is, then point out Mars and Jupiter at 45ft from the center fire.
Careful with dreams or astral travel and waking up with sand from Mars in your hand. Stepping through the Fae hedge wood is safer than stepping to planets.
Start with slow fencing drills then slowly build up to having Jedi reflexes.
As old women at my last factory job told me, hyper reflexes doing everything 3x faster than others will just wear your body down twice as fast.
Something about watching humming bird feeders.

If I'm going to find value in something, it has to appeal to my aesthetic, emotional, practical, or other senses.
Mythology has a lot of good stories. They rarely, if ever, qualify as history.

What isn't made up, as language itself is a construction. I once thought Subud was a purely experiential practice, but then they added theory to it. The nearest naturalistic system I've found is probably Eugene Gendlin's Focusing.
"History", is not about the past, but interpretations of the past, many so called "facts" turn out not to be so, such as the Sumerian civilization being the earliest. There are differences reporting the news from yesterday, let alone a few thousand years ago. Recently scientist have found "things" can & do emerge from Black holes, which formerly we were told was impossible.

I think it’s very interesting to put any mythological/religious/spiritual beliefs in the context of “facts”. Using your Hekate/Artemis example, the “historical fact” is simply a snapshot of popular belief and understanding of the goddess(es) at the time. Imagine that several thousand years from now people look back on popular beliefs and understandings of the goddess(es) today in 2023. It would be “historically factual” that there were people who believed the two goddesses were one. (Of course this is simply using your example, I don’t engage in Hellenic paganism so I really do not know what is commonly believed, but the “what” is not the point I’m trying to make here).
Tl;dr: Historic facts about beliefs are not facts about the belief itself but facts (or snapshots) of the interpretation of the belief. The beliefs themselves transcend the “fact/fiction or true/false” dichotomy as they are continually fluid

Then we had a female spirit chew on our ears about AC/DC electric current and our male Y chromosome interfere with a ritual only meant for women to preform and not males.

📜Myths can also be misinterpretations of true facts. For example, I noticed that many people misinterpret Ancient Indian (India) statues, some of which depict a god or goddess with eight arms, with each set of arms in different a position, as a god or goddess with eight arms, which I believe is a misinterpretation of that artwork. And I say for the reason each arm position is supposed to be viewed individually, then collectively, in a repeated order like screenshots or scenes of an old motion picture movie.

What we practice now will become historical fact, in that we have factually practiced these beliefs. That doesn't necessarily require that those practices or beliefs be founded in history before now. The tripple godess is a perfect example.

It’s not just history that suffers - science suffers too when it’s conflated with spiritual experiences. I’m a horticulturist and I’ve recently been investigating Biodynamics to determine whether it’s scientifically valid. Biodynamics was the creation of Steiner and is heavily based on his spiritual philosophy of Anthroposophy. In his quest to encourage people to become spiritually more connected with the world (important during the rise of chemical-based agriculture) he unfortunately makes several claims about geology and biology that just… aren’t true. He made these claims as a result of “channeling”. The result being that many people now engage in agricultural practices that they believe will have noticeable, positive effects on their plants - but they don’t. They just don’t.
If they engaged in these practices purely for their own spiritual benefit I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but Biodynamics is marketed as an effective organic practice and consumers pay a premium for biodynamic products that are no better than standard organic products. It also contributes to a frustrating trend of unscientific horticultural misinformation being peddled to well-meaning gardeners.

One comment on Magick is that it is the suspension of belief. This "suspension " could allow a more philosophical attitude towards the subject. The generalizations about the subject of belief undercut the ability to discriminate. Myth can retain the magickal practices of yore.

Not for me. I mean I hear people now saying there's no evidence that Samhain was the Celtic "New year"...but for all my life that's what it has been. And it will continue to be that for me and my family and friends when we celebrate. Because academic whims change every couple of decades (sometimes every couple of minutes) and chasing that dragon wouldn't be very fun. Like how Elizabeth Báthory was seen as a blood thirsty serial killer....but now all these new historians say she was maybe just a victim of male dominated society. I'll leave that to them...and I can read her court documents for myself and make up my own mind. That dragon can get out of my way.

This presentation, understandably, skewed more towards the academic point of view. In doing so, I think some additional nuance was left out. Specifically, the characterization of "accuracy" was not complete. Historical facts can support, contradict, or fail to support without contradicting an assertion. Further, while academics may be able to draw such distinct lines between historical "facts" and "personal belief", this task is much more difficult for practitioners that employ divination techniques to see into the past. From such a practitioner's point of view, there is little difference between a historian interpreting various sources and a practitioner interpreting various methods of divination. Imagining a world where historians stick to "facts" and practitioners stick to "beliefs" is probably optimistic.

Of course it doesn't have to be historical... there was a time for ALL religious beliefs, when they were new.
There's no need for people to pretend that recent innovations are ancient, or vice versa, except for the purposes of misleading potential customers through marketing. There's an idea that ancient people were more in touch with the environment, and that ancient spiritual knowledge was better, and has been corrupted by the boogeyman (church, king, etc) since then. So, there's an urge to find the most ancient knowledge.
I think it's complicated... some relatively more recent innovators seem pretty inspired, and some ancient superstars may not have been so impressive if you could visit them in person... some foundation stories have been embellished by later institutions. Okay, why did autocorrect just try to change "by" into "B", in that sentence? OMFG, it just tried to change "in" into "I"!!! I had to prevent it both times! This is getting frustrating lately. I have to watch after every word I type. It's been getting worse. Did autocorrect become sentient? Should I spell it "Otto Correct" now?
And just in case - No, Otto, I'm not worshipping you, even if you stop messing with my words!

    • @GizzyDillespee
      @GizzyDillespee 6 місяців тому

Dr. Puca isn't selling a new religion, so I'm not saying that about her. I think that's obvious, but I added this just in case anyone thought that. I've found that trend more in the newage community, and a little bit in wicca... and Tibetan Buddhists do tend to repeat questionable hagiographies... but that feels different from a newage teacher claiming some ancient knowledge that really only goes back to the 1960s, etc

    • @GizzyDillespee
      @GizzyDillespee 6 місяців тому

The problem, with newage teachers fessing up about the true source... even though it DOESN'T truly matter... I'm some cases, placebo may be a factor in a method's success, and that placebo may be assisted by the person's belief that the practice is some ancient secret panacea... That's an oversimplification of what I mean by, it's complicated.

Belief and history have nothing to do with eaxh other. You either do the leap of faith, you believe, or you do not. There is no "I believe but it needs to be proven" that sounds like a blatant contradiction. I chose NOT to believe, to the point of trying to not use that verb.
