- Labelled as one of the "worst Silent Hill games ever made" by fans and critics alike at launch, we take a look at what's possibly the most underrated Silent Hill game ever.

The worst Silent Hill is the Silent Hill Pachinko machine.
Lol
Pachinko Makes book of memories look like an achievement in the franchise XD
Making the utter garbage that was Book of Memories look good is an achievement.
That doesn't count because that doesn't exist and never happened and never will and you can't convince me otherwise
the fact that that exists makes me wanna bruh
This video was recommended to me in 2018 for some reason but I'm glad it was, great video!
lol same xd
4:34 his reaction to when he finds out that the game has separate difficulty is hilarious
Ah! Ma boy!
Ah, it's you.
That creepy guy in the intro is so polite, just giving out free copies of the Silent Hill games, what a nice man.
So I have a theory about Downpour's enemy design and red angry ball. In past games Silent Hill draws on its victims' psyche to create monsters and there's strong hints that people don't see the same things as other people. Murphy, depending on your choices, didn't really do much to deserve being there. I think the town itself hasn't got much to work with for Murphy. It's much more focused on the revenge obsessed cop.
If that was the intent behind the lack of enemy variety then it was brilliant
@@ghostofsilence2697 It at least helps me come to terms with it, ya know? Not that it makes it a good game design choice per se but it at least fits the lore from that perspective.
Fuck you you don't know anything
@@Jinxyu-d7h still at it again, troll?
A guy earlier in the comments commented a year ago that the reasons the monsters look like people is because Murphy's biggest problems are caused by humans you know like the man that killed Charlie and the corrupt cop, unlike the other monsters in other games based on something else in another characters' phyche like loss or abondonment and so on, pretty much like the other cop who's now crippled.
"Couldn't get past the school"
Oh so you mean he couldn't figure out the piano puzzle?
Maaan as a kid I didn't even want to attempt that puzzle. I thought "do they honestly except me to ring the dinner bell for all the monsters?"
I had a tradition with my best friend, playing every silent hill game, good and bad. This is the last game we played together before he died. So this has special place in my heart forever. We played through this in the patched form, and this is good silent hill game. There are worse out there.
A detail I like is that the game is called downpour and the boogieman is wearing a raincoat they are shielded from rain while the protagonist is caught in it
Team Silent's scary: "The stained, moldy hall is quiet, only a soft moan and a broken apology from a nearby locked room breaking the silence. Hours later, the door has rotted away, revealing a wet, red sheet draped over a small bundle in a crib."
All other Silent Hill's Scary: "It's a HALLWAY with SPINNING KNIVES and a GUY in a GAS MASK is chasing you with a SLEDGEHAMMER"
And there’s BLOOD EVERYWHERE!!!
And then PYRAMID HEAD bursts in!

I like how this game handles enemies, after you kill a lot of monsters, they will start to avoid you and run away as you get close to them
Or maybe it was a glitch, who knows
I guess it's just a bug, sometimes i've had a run where every monster didn't attack me, like they didn't react.
But in the next run they get back attacking ferociously, fucking me and my medkits.
That would be a genius thing to do on a game like Silent Hill, thematically it fits as it would mean that as you progress (Kill enemies or advance through the game) your nightmares and fears can't affect you as much as they used to (Be with monsters gradually fearing you more and more or have a reduced spawn rate, the first would fit more for a killing spree progress and the second for a character development progress)
is a glitch, dumbass
@@CabezasDePescado Man, you really just went through year old comments solely to insult people. I'm impressed.
@@CabezasDePescado your response is hilarious!!! Cause the only real dumb person is you. It's thanks to this video why I bought Downpour for myself & tried it out. The game had some really great & decent ideas. I feel like the developers really wanted to make a good Silent Hill game, but because Konami being Konami they had no choice but to rush the development cycle & release the game the way it is.
Why didn't Murphy go over one fallen tree?
Could have avoided all of this.
@@Zelix678 Because it's a GAME. Literally every game has dumb shit like that in them. Every single game because GAMESSSSSSSS not real life.
@@Zelix678 Because you don't shut the fuck up.
I'm going to say this and try not to sound pretentious as hell, but it kind of makes sense that the monsters here look more like people than not. Silent hill changes the world to the person in it correct? Well for murphy the monsters he face are people like Napier and Soule, (i think that's how they're spelled) his view of monsters would be shaped by the people who caused him the most problems. His fears and issues manifested from people, not an abstract concept like sickness, pregnancy, or isolation.
what about circumcision
I honestly agree with this statement. Murphy's trauma stems from existing people, (again like Naiper, Sewell, and even Coleridge's death) not nessicarilly non-existing things like how they did in 2, 3, and 4 the room.
Something that bothers me though is people saying this game is the only one to do it, which is false.
Both silent hill 1 and 2 brought in the humanoid enemy concepts. While I think 1 and 2 did it better, downpour was definetly not the first to do it
This guy needs more attention. He is like a hidden gem on youtube. Subscribed! :)
I have never heard a positive review for this game. It’s very interesting.
ikr, a change of pace for sure, but only cause it isn't like all the others that you know never played a Silent Hill game and are just regurgitating what they've heard other people say *cough* GVMERS *cough*
DrunkNLucky dude i liked it too great story dark gameplay the only negativity is that the fighting is bad in the game
I will give the game this.
It does something interesting with Silent Hill itself plotwise that the other games don't.
1. Murphy isn't Silent Hill's main target, Anne is. Murphy was brought there to test HER, first half of the game is the town getting him to her and having a short test for him to because why not (Murphy by default will have his epiphany about his son if nothing else no matter what you do, That aspect Murphy always comes to terms with regardless of his actions in game. Whether that's because Silent Hill knew Murphy was gonna pass anyway and the test was purely for the lolz or was relevant for Anne's test, or it was more lenient with Murphy solely because he was needed mostly unharmed for Anne's test.), Murphy has his little revelation a mere halfway through unlike any other protagonist, He is unique in this aspect, meaning the 2nd half is purely about him escaping. Notably, when he get's the boat working he sees a light, Silent Hill was personally done with Murphy, however he was still needed for Anne so it made him go back to finish Anne's test, otherwise it's implied it would have just let him go then and there.
2. Not all of the monsters fought aren't Murphy's inner demons, 1 is specifically Anne's, it's even implied some of them are tired to unknown parties beyond those 2. It's interesting because in SH2, James only fought ONE MONSTER that wasn't his, which might solely be due to being in proximity to the person it's tied to when it appeared, I don't know if Silent Hill predicted that possibility, but I'm assuming either way it just rolled with it. Here it seems intentional, not that Murphy would ever know this. In the games outside this and 2, this could be explained by the Cult having a hand in it, kinda like with Homecoming where the centipede one is sent after the protagonist and the cop despite having no collection at all to those 2, unlike the other bosses. Downpour is the odd man out, Murphy is only there for the final boss in terms of Anne's and the unknown parties' monsters and it's the only game other than 2 where Silent Hill is the big bad rather than the Cult. Meaning Silent Hill, for the only time where someone's inner demons are directly targeting someone they aren't connected to, and purposefully and not just because they happen to be in the same room as their target like James was.
A decent amount of plot, mostly around Anne, is absent in game and is in a tie in comic sadly, specifically what the Dolls represent. This isn't really interesting, it's just something that I find rather annoying and felt relevant, I hate it when they tie story bits for a video game outside the game. Looking at you World of Warcraft.
Said comic also straight up makes the good ending canon, this makes the game the odd man out in just straight up picking a canon ending, unlike the other titles where multiple endings are somehow canon.
If this game just had a few more months in the oven to polish up gameplay ad maybe the story a bit, it could easily be considered one of the best games in the series.
Downpour really got disrespected by reviews. I do understand performance issues holding it back, but from what I recall it was just dismissed as 'another American Silent Hill', kicked to the curb because people had been burned by Origins and Homecoming especially.
But Downpour does have a good story. It respects the theme it sets up and builds up a unique Otherworld to match it, utilizing the aspect of confinement and drowning instead of just dredging up the 'expected' Otherworld imagery of blood and rust-- it's not as immediately frightening, but it's much more personal. The monster designs are also appropriate for the theme, and I would argue not as lazy as the last few entries that would just recycle evil dogs/evil flying thing/evil crawling thing/sexy nurse because those are the monsters Silent Hill uses-- given the real-world evil that Murphy experienced was hideously human, it makes sense that he's tormented by monsters in human forms.
I also like how the ending system works-- your choices might mean nothing in the storyline (which is congruous with Silent Hill punishing the other characters; those called to Silent Hill must save themselves), but they characterize Murphy retroactively. If you a play a Murphy that dismisses the others and puts himself and his goals first, you get the bad ending, where Murphy gave in to his worst urges; if you instead play him as a character that tried to save or help or empathize with others (and one who was unwilling to kill unless absolutely necessary, hence keeping a low death toll with the monsters) then that contextualizes the reveal completely differently. It's a little more in line with how Silent Hill 2 would judge you as you played-- if you denied the temptations of the town and paid respects to Mary throughout the game, then James' actions are a completely different contextualization than if you gave in to Maria's temptations, or if you allowed James to contemplate Angela's knife. It's not as seamless, but I feel like Downpour really understood a lot about why Silent Hill 2 was such an outstanding experience.
It's also somewhat important, on that note, to mention that Silent Hill 2 *also* isn't that scary, certainly compared to the other games, which are much more overt in their horror imagery. There are parts that are definitely unsettling, but SH2 also had an Otherworld that was much... quieter. Sadder. James' personal hell was mostly about isolation and loneliness, with its monsters used sparingly, and Downpour seemed to be more interesting in evoking that emotion than just painting the walls with crawling bloodstains. (And don't get me wrong, I LOVE the imagery of 1 and 3, but I also appreciate the quieter interpretation from SH2 and Downpour. Again, it's nice that Downpour didn't just lean on the imagery used in previous games.)
I wish Downpour had been given a fairer shot. Seems to me a lot of the reviews at the time were kind of caught up in what a Silent Hill was supposed to look like instead of looking at Downpour for what it was, performance optimization notwithstanding.
The red void represents the truth. Murphy is running from it, sacrificing 'people' to slow it down. You'll notice it talks sometimes.
Watching your SH videos chronologically and your reaction to Downpour having a puzzle difficulty is absolutely priceless.
I hate how this is probably the last Silent Hill game, it's my favorite of the post-Team Silent games and was an actual step in the right direction. It's far from perfect, but parts of it are amazing and what I want from Silent Hill, and haven't seen since 4. I actually think this group of developers could have made truly great games had they learned from their first mistakes

I think Er Cogito is referring to recent rumours about konami giving out the option to make silent hill games. iirc, metal gear was also a part of that rumour?
Are you sure bout that bud?
Downpour was at its best when you were free to choose your own route to explore. Ducking into an abandoned apartment complex to get out of the rain and away from monsters, only to realise something was there with you is peak J-horror.
A lot of silent hill for me is about feeling like you stepped into something far bigger and more malicious than you could work out on your own. The gameplay and design served the atmosphere that the town was alive and it hated you

Subbed.
I agree with everything in this review except blaming the devs for shit choices that Konami largely forced on them. It's not easy to look at the original games and play them through to understand why the monsters are scary when Konami forces you into brutal crunch and makes you make a game that's super out of your depth in a short amount of time. There's a good video called "Wha Happun" where Matt McMuscles goes into depth about how unfairly slanted everything was against the poor dev team during that time. I'd highly suggest checking it out.
You do realize he guest starred on that video right?
Silent hill strangely punishes you for killing alot of enemies. It as if the towns like heey... We worked really hard on making those guys. Stop
Having read all those negative reviews, I still decided to give this game a chance. Oh boy, I’m so glad I did.
Initially, I had very low expectations. The first part was exceptionally frustrating, especially the enemies that jump down from ceiling. I usually don’t complain about those things, but combat is nonsensical in this game without any reason: even if you successfully attack your enemy, camera often inexplicably swings in front of you so that you don’t see that enemy and then you get attacked yourself afterwards. This makes the game way harder than it should be. Besides, the entire game is filled with useless junk that makes exploration way less fun than it should be.
Once you get passed those weird design decisions, the game starts really shining. Annoying combat mechanics can be bypassed just by skipping most enemies. Distinguishing usefull items from junk is often possible by moving the camera.
All in all, once you learn the game rules, SH:Downpour becomes a really satisfying experience and definitely one of the better games in the market.
Fun fact, Daniel Licht is also the composer for the underrated Hellraiser IV: Bloodline film soundtrack (which is one of my favorite scores in the Hellraiser series alongside the first two), the Dexter TV series (which is his well-known work) and the Dishonored games. He is actually a very good composer from what I have gathered. Sadly, he passed away on August 2nd, 2017.
(sighs) Rest in peace, Daniel. You will be missed.
Then let us honour his work by finding enjoyment in it even if he can not bare witness to us doing it.
Rest in peace :(
OST is criminally underrated for this game. Game isn't too bad, has a lot of good moments. Dragged down by enemy design and lack of actual horror
It's not as memorable as akira's soundtrack, but daniel litch made an awesome job with the music in this game
@@GohanZ-jq9jy I completely agree Akira is one of a kind, brilliant. But Licht did a great job. I really dig this OST

the tire swing randomly switching from a tire swing to a hanging body every time you look i wish horror games would do that more often it's starting to get a little boring on how most horror games write the protagonist as someone with nerves of steel who's psyche never falters
Usually in reviews when they say, "If you're worried about spoilers, skip to this point", I just ignore it. I usually don't have that much interest in the game in question to play it myself, or at least don't care about the story. But damn dude, you did such a good job redeeming this game - just like with everything you do, you gave it a fair shake; one that's long overdue - that I totally DID skip the spoilers. Heck, I'm here searching websites to see how cheap I can find a copy for PS3 :) Great freakin' review, man
Hope you found it cheap. This is a good game.
Dude the way you told the story of this game..I'm awe struck. I'm a die hard Silent Hill fan..come back to it pretty routinely every year and I try to play at least a little of all my favorite entries (1,2,3, and shattered memories because the interconnected lore of those ones is the kind of storytelling I live for) but I think I'm about to add Downpour to the rotation because of this video.
through a 2023 lens, the part about the games initial poor performance and how they shouldve delayed the game by a few months has wound up being quite prophetic
This game is absolutely amazing. No way in hell did it deserve the hate it got. The town itself looks so damn good and the intro and journey to get to the town is genius.
It’s the fact Konami screwed over the company that was making the game, it would’ve been much better if the company that was legitimately making Downpour were given more freedom on designs of the monsters, and many other aspects.
I always find myself binge watching your vids every couple of months. Glad I found your channel.

Downpour was written by the then-current writer of the comic book series; the Mailman (in the game) was actually a recurring character from the comics
The story was pretty good. I wish it was more than it was gameplay wise.
It's a simple yet tonally compelling story of revenge and what it does to a person.
Downpour is a real shame because I feel like a lot of the other later silent hills (except shattered memories I guess) had this real feeling that the Devs were taking the games in directions that didn't fit it, and would've been better as original IPs.
Downpour had a much better sense of what works in silent hill, but if you see how much stuff got cut and how buggy it is it's clear they had very little time or budget to work with. I feel like if these guys had been given more to work with they could've had something really special, which honestly makes it hurt all the more seeing the state it's in.
I played downpour and beat the story and had no idea there were side quests let alone a subway
So originally this game was supposed to let you play as Anne as well. Apparently they cut her for dlc that never happened. But it seems to me the story makes much more sense playing as Anne as she’s the one with the revenge plot, and someone who would actively be in Silent Hill looking to kill Murphy. Plus theres things that happen in Downpour that only make sense if you read the comic and see that Anne’s father is speaking to her to not do revenge.
Anyway, I blame not committing to another female protagonist.
I did not know that. 🤔

"The monster looks like people"
Well... Hope this helps, I heard that they were designed that way to symbolize the fact that the real monster is people.
oh wow what an amazing bit of symbolism that isn't done better in other media and totally makes up for the fact the monsters are underwhelming and not very scary and don't look like silent hill monsters.
Like, Silent Hill 2 did that already with Billy AND James to an extent
I use to think that Silent Hill was about people being punished for their sins and whatnot, but that's what SH 2 and what some of the other games were trying to be. is. SH is about a cult. The original story is about a cult trying to birth a god.
Yes. There's a spiritual power that gets twisted by the cult practices at trying to birth the god. Silent Hill 1, 3 and 4 were not about punishing the protagonists for their sins. It's funny how wrong most people get this series.
ラファエル I thinks it’s both except maybe SH 1 but I do believe every SH is punishing someone, trying to teach a lesson or proving a point even SH and SH 4 while also dealing with the cult plot.
And even SH2 isn't really about "punishing" people for their sins: it's more about broken people trying to deal with buried, unconscious guilt, and Silent Hill having the spiritual power to manifest their unconsciousness, but itself being indifferent to the people in it: other aspect that the western developed games got wrong was to turn the town into some sort of purgatory, a place that has the objective to teach a lesson to people who need punishment, when in fact, it just provides said people the tools for self-flagellation. Yahtzee succinctly describes this in his review:
"There is absolutely nothing physical stopping him from running straight back to his car and going home, maybe picking up a hooker or two on the way back, but he refuses to."
"You start to think that Jaaaaaames's nightmare is entirely of his own creation, as if the town is handing him a set of jump leads and watching as he sticks them on his balls."
I've been waiting YEARS for someone to give Downpour it's due justice. Thanks for making this, you've earned a sub from me
As far as I'm aware, they released downpour prematurely because its release month is Silent Hill's anniversary, and Konami thought it made sense to release a Silent hill game each week on Silent Hill month, concluding with the Silent Hill film that was coming out that year. This is also part of why the HD collection suffered. It was released for the same reason, but some idiot didn't save the goldmaster for the original games (and then there's book of memories...)
Man... Konami sure does suck huh?
Downpour seemed like a step in the right direction, It's a shame the bugs killed it before it could be seen in its best light
Hey brother, its October 1st. Every October I would always replay through all the Silent Hill games. But getting older, having a career, kids, etc that just isnt possible. However, I can now watch your videos on the Silent Hill games and almost feel like I'm replaying them again. So thank you!

One thing I love about Downpour is how Murphy reacts to some events, like when you first go to the otherworld, Murphy very visibly gets unnerved and starts to freak out because he doesn't know what is happening
Man, 2012 was such a rough year for new entries into popular series. Ninja Gaiden 3, Resident Evil 6, Operation Raccoon City, Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Hell, SFXT, Downpour, and ORC came out the same month, and none of them were celebrated. What a year lol. It wasn't all bad, but there was a ton of hype for games then.

For me the worst game in the franchise is Homecoming. I really hated that they shoehorned sexy nurses and Pyramid Head into it, despite them having no connection to Alex at all. On top of that, the game was too Americanised for my liking and lacked this specific Japanese horror atmosphere that I loved in Silent Hill 1-4. Downpour falls short in monsters design but everything else about it felt very good for me. I think the plot was really interesting and engaging, Murphy had a bit more personality than Henry and Alex and the world was pretty neat to explore. Unfortunately I couldn't do many sidequests because I was playing on PS3 emulator and it kept crashing for me A LOT so I had to speedrun it a bit. Those which I managed to finish were fun, so the addition of them was a cool idea. I don't get the hate this game received. For a non-Japanese Silent Hill, developers did a really good job.
The sexy nurses are probably my least favorite "series staple," as they really do shove them in a lot of undeserved places.
Homecoming is my favorite Silent Hill game after SH2, but I agree the enemy choices don’t make sense since it isn’t James. But the game itself? Hard disagree with you on that. As for Downpour, I played and beat Downpour last year and really enjoyed it. Extremely unfairly underrated game IMO. Glad we at least agree on that.
Yeah, Homecoming is terrible.
Downpour's heart is in the right place.
@@OpenMawProductions. Why did you think homecoming was terrible? I’m genuinely curious because I 100% disagree. Honestly the only Silent Hill game I truly didn’t like was 3. I enjoyed 4, but I didn’t like having to revisit the same areas twice each time. My top favorites are Silent Hill 2, Downpour, Homecoming, and Origins.
in my opinion nowadays following reviews is not a good move, if hating something becomes the "cool" thing to do, a lot of people will follow the fad and hate it just because, so many games received a lot of hate and i loved them
What’s interesting is that in the original SH there is an unusual reoccurrence of wheelchairs in the game in numerous areas, and I like to think the Wheelman in Downpour is somewhat an origin character of the wheelchairs in SH1 even though he’s clearly a representation of another character.
And sadly this is the last "proper" silent hill game ever released, and konami murdered a what could have been an amazing rebirth from kojima and del toro...im still hurting thinking that maybe in an alternate universe this silent hill might exist and might be the best ever

I'm glad to see someone else who enjoyed this game. I played it on the xbox 360 (without ever updating it mind you) and had a blast all the way through. The side quests were some of the coolest, and sometimes pretty freaky, things I'd seen in a silent hill game to date.

@@kingi-sick2485 obviously the first, the second one is a comedy disgrace
Homecoming was originally suppose to be based on the movie but the decision to make a movie tie in game was changed last minute so the writers had to scramble and come up with a different story and the game had to be delayed. Downpour was an incredible idea. Not perfectly executed, but not by any means bad. How anybody could have played Homecoming and spoken ill of this one is.. infuriating.

Homecoming was great.
@G T Hey, if that's what you think, man, then more power to you.
@@thetopdogrob9366 I'm curious, what didn't you like about Homecoming?
@G T The character. The world building for the game is lazy and dull. The fighting mechanics are poo. They slapped the iconic monster like sexy nurses and Pyramid Head in their for the sake of it, which makes 0 sense because they are in part of James Sunderlands' imagination. The one game in the franchise that did nothing special or interesting. The whole sewer section should be cut from the game, which sewer secrion has no purpose. Alex is a boring protagonist. The music was bland. Personally, it's just my opinion, don't freak. I don't think it's that good. Playing through all the games myself is the one I have to say that lacks. Or least doesn't try to do something special that we haven't already seen before. Least in downpour, they made Murphys character good they fixed the combat a bit more and the world building feels more original and for the character. As well the boogie man is an amazing addon for Murphy. What did Alex get? Nothing good. Besides, the same used monsters. Aka James Sunderlands monsters. Still, im sure you have your reasons. It's just not my favorite.
@@thetopdogrob9366 Sure, I respect your opinion. I think Alex was fine as a protagonist. He behaved like a normal guy and he was much more enthusiastic, and manly than Henry or James !
The music ? Wow, I love Akira Yamaoka ! "Elle's theme" from this game is in my car playlist.
I agree that some levels were annoying, I didn't like the graveyard section and the combat took some time to get used to and could be unfair sometimes.
I also liked Downpour. The only SH games that I couldn't force myself to finish were 3 and 4.
Thanks for sharing your ideas !
"is it really that hard to make your game work at launch" well yes apparently, I mean 90% of games have disastrous launches nowadays, devs got too used to the "heh just launch it, we will fix it later" mindset

3:28 me: I see what u did there
I agree with the moral choices being lazy, but in this case I was ok with them. The ending of the game is based around something that already happened, and the different endings are different last events, so your moral choices are more about the kind of man he is, the kind of man who lets his captor die because he’s guilty vs the kind of man who tries to save her because he was never guilty.
a huge problem with the monsters post ps2 is that they try to make the monsters cool looking instead of scary
"I have a friend named Daniel"
*Amnesia flashbacks*
Downpour is underrated sadly, I enjoyed it when it came out on 360.
About the mistery of the town and why we dont know why the town is the way it is…we actually do, that is not open to interpretation in silent hill 2 you find a book that literally explains that the lake was worshiped by native americans and that the european settlemen basically killed them off corrupting the native american deity or something like that anyway aparently alexa also gave that deity powers over the town to project the demons in tormented souls.
I skipped SH downpour when it dropped. Recently picked it up for 10 dollars and I have no regrets. I really enjoyed this game.
I had a glitch in this game where the enemies just walked towards me and stood there. Honestly it made the game REALLY creepy. It had a lot to like in it but overall just wasn’t very good.
Also, this soundtrack was composed by Daniel Licht?!?! Wtf that guy did the dishonoured series soundtracks which are amazing!
Nah optional literature being tied to mandatory plot is great. It was excellent in RE1. Makes you feel like you’re solving the mystery yourself.
But making the main character act like you clearly read it was bad
@@rinomavrovic6673 Nah I like it. At the end of RE1 Chris or Jill will ask Wesker how long he has been working for Umbrella. At that point in the game if you had read all of the documents you would’ve already solved the mystery of Umbrella and Wesker’s betrayal all by yourself and the cutscene merely acts as satisfying validation for your investigation.
If you didn’t read anything then that cutscene will be the very first time you’ve ever heard of Umbrella and you would understandably feel like an idiot.
@@kingstarscream320 honestly, that sounds more like an oversight to me... unless you had to read these notes to solve a puzzle, in that case it's believable you had to read it.
@@Mike14264 Why? A lot of notes were needed to solve puzzles but many weren’t.
Having Chris or Jill stop and rub their chin and exposit the plot in a fully cinematic cutscene would take you out of the game. It also reduces the fear level, IMO. Spending most of the game alone with few breaks in cutscenes adds to the atmosphere greatly. Why assume it is an oversight?
@@kingstarscream320 I was thinking about how some of the stuff that is mentioned in the cutscene with Wesker, like Umbrella itself, is only mentioned in the notes and stuff. Like you said, if we don't see those notes (unless they're needed to solve a puzzle, which makes them necessary to read), we really wouldn't have any idea of what's going on, and realistically, neither would Jill nor Chris.
I'm not saying they should've made the computer checking and stuff an obligatory cutscene to guarantee that we learn about Umbrella, of course not. But, it's usually not a good thing to put necessary plot stuff, usually explained through character interactions and in-game cutscenes, inside optional content... However, if we do need these notes to solve a puzzle, that makes them obligatory content, so the issue would practically solve itself.
I think Murphy's monsters were just ugly people because he's from a prison and some of his biggest fears and threats were probably the actual inmates. It's not as symbolic and deep but a person's mind isn't always complicated.
So I give the monsters a pass for considering that.
BlackRaveBow cool mightyena icon
I kinda like the weeping bat, for it's lore inside the caverns and look, he should just have scarier noises.
Never heard about this game until I saw your video. Just finished the game. I didn’t think it was half bad. Biggest problem to me outside of the stuttering, frame dipping and freezing was the game’s sound mixing.
Downpour is way way truer to silent hill than any of these new game trailers I’m seeing ᴖ̈
I played and beat this game last year and honestly really enjoyed it
well Silent Hill f's narrative will be great when Ryukishi07 is done with it. I do wish we had more visual or narrative stuff to know what kinda psychological mess we will deal with when that game comes out! Downpour tho is a great title.
@@Evilriku13 I totally love how Downpour makes Silent Hill more like like a city than a town. The entire opening is amazing IMO with the devil’s pit and sky tram. I totally love it. It makes SH a ghost tourist vacation resort. The whole SH public library section is awesome too
For me, I agree the game is good…up until the final level. The amount of forced combat encounters really leaves a sour taste.
My other problem is the endings. Specifically the ending where it is implied Murphy killed his son. This makes the plot suffer in my opinion. In previous games, the characters always did the thing that got them there, here, either Silent Hill is punishing Murphy, or he is being put through the ringer for no reason.
It would have honestly been better to play as Anna, or have Murphy definitively not kill his son.
I have a very, VERY good feeling that Komani was trying there hardest to kill Silent Hill! Passing it to Western developers who didn’t know how to use newer technology and what not
No, the Silent Team just got disband...
I like how fair your reviews are. You never seem to jump on the bandwagon, but you don't needlessly contradict. A bad game is a bad game and a hidden gem is a hidden gem. People need to stop hating other people just for one little disagreement, or at the very least put their feelings aside and try to understand. I get really mad at certain disagreements myself, but I try my best to keep my arguments to a logical and calm conversation.
The otherworld in downpour symbolizes Murphy running from his past
Thank god there is people who like this game
With Silent Hill f, the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill Townhall all taking their sweet time perhaps you could look at some Silent Hill spin-offs like Silent Hill Orphan and the recent release Silent Hill The Short Message
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the ending song by Jonathan Davis, the front man from Korn because there was petition to remove the song entirely.
It's sad that people dislike that song as it's pretty good. The lyrics tie in to the story of the game as well as to the town itself.
Why'd they try to get it removed?
4:33 - 4:42 That reaction is priceless.
Poor Downpour. If only the devs had a bit more experience to prevent the technical issues and the monster designs had been more creative, as well as work out some story weaknesses, it could EASILY have been up there with the Team Silent games. I would easily put it on the same level as 4: has SEVERE issues, nowhere near as good as the original trilogy, but it's a genuinely good Silent Hill game underneath its unpleasantness.
It's official, this game is now a comedy after watching that enemy just nonchalantly dropping from the ceiling after being pelted with a brick.
Hello there
@@landrylongacre6391 General Kenobi
When the game recently came out my brother bought it for the ps3, I played it every now and then and genuinely thought it wasn't that bad, the weapon mechanic can be fun at times and funny when you accidentally throw a weapon to the abyss and lose it forever (Which happened to me all the time)
For the longest time I felt like my taste in games was shit or something since literally everyone around me hated this game, my brother even gave it away before I even finished playing it, and whenever I said Downpour wasn't that bad people would look at me like I was crazy, so finding your opinion, after playing all the games and being an avid fan of the series, makes me feel pretty good! I don't have shit taste for games after all! I feel like I was just told I'm not crazy haha.
"They've been completly silent after this" ha ha ...got ya...pun/10
The Silent Hill movie I can defend, it's mostly following the story of the first game in which it explains why everything the way it is. The movie for what it was, is a pretty faithful adaptation and for all it's faults, I have to commend the director for making something that FELT like Silent Hill.
lol that awful film was NOTHING like SH1 game. Next time you play SH1, actually read those papers you find.
I like the idea of Silent Hill being someone's place of redemption or of punishment. I also like the idea of the town itself being alive as well. It's like something you would find in the SCP universe.
The name of that is purgatory and it's not what the series as a whole is about. Only Silent Hill 2 is about that. I don't think copying Silent Hill 2 again and again and again is such a good idea. It inevitably gets more and more watered down. Downpour is already a poor man's Silent Hill 2. The people making these games are not nearly as talented as the people in the Team Silent. Either you give the franchise back to them or to someone else really talented that will explore new grounds, instead of repeating Silent Hill 2 over and over.
@@edmilsoneletrica I don’t think retreading similar ground is necessarily a bad thing, I don’t want every thing in silent hill to be the same thing as 2, but I think you can explore something different with the same method, which is what downpour failed to do. Making one game with a similar style isn’t purgatory, you’re acting like good ideas can’t have longevity.
This is a pretty late ass comment (Been binging his SH videos) but the opening always makes me think Nitro's "friend" is dead and it's just an odd whiplash, I dunno why, it's just the tone when talking about it.
I really do appreciate this game and what it has to say, I just wish they had a bit more time to tell the story
Apparently this game was rushed as hell, between the limited enemy roster and full bosses and story getting cut last second
I really think it could've been one of the greats
I thought the red black hole void thing was terrifying imo.
Felt like hell itself was chasing you.
Which I guess it sorta was, considering it's essentially the otherworld closing in on itself.
Hell itself huh, yeah I can see what you mean, and with that mindset I would want to stay as far away from it as well, nice interpretation
eh. I prefer something similar to the red mist from Silent Hill 3 as more terrifying than the red void
29:09 go home pyramid head, you're drunk
I'm not drunk... also I'm his cousin.
I thought it was weird and hilarious that the pre-order codes for the item locker were static and you could get all the items if you kept trying. Say Target gives you the code 295 and gives you a fancy crowbar but Bestbuy gives you the code 847 and gives you a fancy axe. Everyone just posted them online and they always work.
@GamebroTV While I haven't tried in years I'm 99% sure they still work just because there was never any internet requirement attached. I'm pretty sure it was hard coded into the game so it's reasonable to expect it to work no matter what.
BTW the game has a Korn song connected to it
People who say this is the worst Silent Hill have no knowledge of Book of Memories
I bet if they released the patched version of the game they would be not bankrupt. Such a shame when you realized that they actually put their heart and soul into this.
though about this early the video, good to know Nitro also thinks so. Or rather, he convinced me.
Damn, these comments are so recent. I never seen a comment section of a 4 year old video have so many recent comments.
I think it's a combination of his well-done videos with the longevity of the Silent Hill fans. I've been a fan since I played my first on ps2 and there's still so many really active fans! Check out the community forums for your SH fix. It's so cool how people are still finding things out.
The magic of UA-cam recommendations I guess
It's crazy right
Dead by daylight
For me it was defaulted to sort by new for this specific video.
