When I was 15 years old, I was very depressed. One evening, I was crying so hard. My older brother brought me into his room that had just candles lit, sat me down, put headphones on my head and he walked out of the room and shut the door. This song, which I hadn't heard before, played. It was very healing to me. This is a memory I will never forget alllll these years later. I still can't hear this song without crying. VERY powerful. ❤

Nice reaction. Let’s all cast our votes for Kate to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With fan voting closing on 28 April it is probably too late for this remarkable woman to catch Willie Nelson but the more votes she gets the more likely it is that the Committee will finally induct her. No one deserves it more.

This song has saved so many people, one of which was Elton John who revealed (for the 1st time) on 2014 BBC Documentary about Kate Bush that this song literally saved his life.
As others have mentioned Peter and Kate aren't a couple, but they have collaborated with each other.
Peter appeared as a guest on the BBC 1979 Kate Bush Christmas special - Kate. Kate provided backing vocals on two tracks "Games Without Frontiers" and "No Self Control" on Peter's self titled 3rd album the one with the melted face cover. This proved to be very important since Kate got introduced to the Fairlight CMI (at the time was the only owner of one in the UK), which Kate started to use on her 3rd studio album "Never For Ever" and played a key role on her subsequent albums "The Dreaming" and the iconic "Hounds Of Love".
Being a Kate Bush fan from the very start, I was so happy that many (especially in America) were introduced to Kate as a result of the use of "Running Up That Hill" as a key part of Stranger Things. As a result I put together some notes that acted as a quick introduction to Kate, which I repeat below...
A quick background summary of Kate Bush, Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. By her mid-teens she had written more than a hundred songs (some reports say nearer two hundred), the family made demo recordings of about fifty, in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour guitarist for pink Floyd, he was interested and ultimately paid for time at studio with session musicians to make professional recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talents - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old.
EMI paid Kate a retainer which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie dance). Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the professional recordings that Davie Gilmour had paid for - one of those songs was written when she was 13.
Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK and album charts.
When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the album chart.
Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director. Kate was also heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 concert residency "Before The Dawn". Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and pioneer.
Kate was credited as a co-producer on her third album "Never For Ever" and was the sole producer on her fourth album "The Dreaming" and every subsequent studio album.
If you're interested in listening to more Kate Bush songs I and many other Kate Bush fans will be more than happy to provide suggestions

Kate has a tonal range that is shocking. Most female singers who have that soft dynamic in the upper range lack the 'roundness' or that full, rich tone. She is also capable of a deep airy resonance and full voice strength and power. But what I find most remarkable about her is the way she chooses her phasing and diction, the way she punctuates the consonance or lets the note trail off into the air. Near the end when she sings "we're prowwwd of who you ah.." drawing out that owwwd and then the 'who-you -ah' is phrased as a sharper triplet rhythm...who does that??? And tben "it's neeeever been eeeesy" She takes us all to school every time. Check out her song Night of the Swallow, Hello Earth and This Woman's Work,:some of her most remarkable vocal work.

From what I've read , Peter Gabriel had some sort of nervous breakdown in 1985 and wrote this song to reward the support he got from his family .This is such a healing song , one man in despair and one woman beautifully comforting him....I think a lot of us have felt like this at one point or another . It's been rumoured that these two had a relationship , but nothing has ever been confirmed . Both artists have great solo work , and Kate Bush sounds very different away from this but still just as beautiful a voice! I loved your reaction , you described it from the heart ♥️

It's probably just me, but seeing this song & video during the "corona" virus epidemic and all the hardship that entailed just struck me like a bolt of lightening. I burst into tears. The background of the waxing & waning sun with it's prominent "corona" is so unexpected and analogous to the virus. Even though this video is 38 years old, it's prescient in a unexpected way. Peter & Kate are brilliant.

Two genius musicians, Peter is an icon and Kate, well Kate is a legend - the greatest female artist (singer, composer, lyricist, pianist, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer) to ever come out of England - a true pioneer for women in the music industry. And you're right, this song has been credited as preventing many people from harming themselves or committing suicide - including Elton John who said this song stopped him from taking a lethal overdose during a time of despair. You should react to Kate's song and official video for "This Woman's Work," another one that will tug on your heartstrings!

Kate was not Peter’s first choice for this song. Given the American backstory, a song inspired by depression hit America, Peter wanted to do this with Dolly Parton. But she declined and so he turned to his good friend and previous collaborator Kate. The opening lyrics “In this proud land” is the title of a book of photographs he had seen and been affected by taken of life and hardship during the depression, which included photographs by Dorothea Lange. Dolly Parton is a fine singer but I think everyone one was glad he ended up singing this song with Kate.

    • @johnjohn37371
      @johnjohn37371 Рік тому

I read that years ago and have really wondered ever since what that would have sounded like. Dolly has a beautiful voice, and one can even say her higher register and vibrato could be considered Kate Bush adjacent, but the southern accent, I think that might have thrown me. I would love to have heard Tori Amos take a crack at it...but ultimately, no one could or will top this.

They are respecting co-artists and lifelong friends to each other. They supported each other by working on each other's albums while Peter taught a very young Kate, who early in her musiccareer learned the ropes of producing her own albums. Two very independant and authentic artists even make a cumulative greater combination together.
Look for Kate's Moments of Pleasure video (1993). After that you want more and more. At the start of her career aged 18 (early1978), she debuted with her debutalbum The Kick Inside, which soon was recognized a classic album. From that album Moving, Wuthering Heights, The Man With The Child In His Eyes and most of all the titletrack are out of this world. The Kick Inside is the closer of the album. It tells a very tragic story and deals with a brother/sister relationship, taboowise... Very mature for a girl who wrote it in her teens. On top of the emotional and heartbreaking story, the haunting composition confirms the tragedy strongly. In 1976 Kate bush was introduced to the musicbusiness by Pink Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour. He guided her with respect to her artistry until she got her first recorddeal. Kate has been musically active until 2014 (and maybe still is), when she took to the stage for the first time in 35 years. In between she has delivered 10 wellreceived studioalbums. About a year before this duet, Kate released Hounds Of Love (1985). Her commercially most succesful album. The second half of that album, called The Ninth Wave, reveals a story in 7 songs of a woman drifting at sea after a shipwreck. The mental process she's undergoing during this ordeal is just masterfully written and executed. To anyone who reads this and feels motivated to do an inquiry into her work, brace yourself for a rabithole experience in which you will come across stories of all kind, from deep romance (even beyond the grave), psychological, even psychiatric revelations, into theatrics and horrorstories. No song of Kate Bush is alike the other. She will never shy away for a sensitive subject.

Here's a little backstory on this song. In the late seventies, the United Kingdom was experiencing a brutal recession with a right wing government lead by Margeret Thatcher as the main cause. Millions, yes, you've read that right, MILLIONS of workers were laid off when the steel and mining industries were closed in favor of buying steel and coal overseas because of it being cheaper. Entire families were faced with the fact that the only life they knew was all of a sudden pulled away from them. Many resorted to substance abuse and suicide when unable to cope.
Now Peter Gabriel is from a rich family, he never had to worry about anything like that affecting him, but what he DID have was empathy, as during his performances with Genesis, he saw those towns with his own eyes. And when he found a picture of men waiting in line at a job office during great depression era USA, he linked what they had been going through to what his own country was going through.
So he wrote this song from the point of view of one of those miners who lost everything, and had every intention to have Dolly Parton do the female voice, but she couldn't be booked. But hey, we can all agree that Kate Bush did a stellar job replacing her.

    • @penponds

Slight correction - Thatcher was elected in May 1979 in reaction to the devastation wrought on the British economy by a combination of socialist and weak conservative Governments in the mid 70s.
In 1979 Thatcher inherited some of the worst economic statistics of postwar Britain which was still suffering from huge strikes during the recent “Winter of Discontent”. Inflation was at 20%!!!Thatcher was a breath of fresh air.
Moreover she was re-elected with landslide majorities twice in 1983 & 1987, and transformed the UK from the basket case it was in 1979.
If we’re going for socio-political - economic context for music, let’s not be misleading about it!
IMHO the 70s has been the pinnacle of rock / pop / vocal music and will never been surpassed. The UK was leading the way on the rock & pop front (Zeppelin, Floyd, Elton John, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Thin Lizzy, Quo, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath etc etc) but our American cousins had the edge on singer/songwriters, soul, disco and amazing bands like The Eagles, Boston, Bread, Steely Dan etc.
Kate Bush was different and an instant icon. Peter Gabriel was already a legendary lyricist and performer.
      Amazing times.

it is a nice song, but for the multitude this is a fallacy,.. i speak for many when there are zero friends, apart from animals...there is no comfort nor compassion, no words of courage or a pat on the shoulder,...there are no words of encouragement from family, nor are there bits of hope and light... there is no ending to salvation as there is none,... when no one cares, ..then no care is needed....just relief..

It definitely exists. Most everything worthwhile in life is through connection to others and love, support, friendship.
If you don't have that in your life please get out there and look for it. Or be that rock for someone else.
