  • Orthodontic forces are placed at the crown of the tooth, and so the tendency is for a tooth to move more at the edge of the crown than at the apex of the unseen root that is covered in bone. This is called tipping. Sometimes we want to negate that tipping and we place a force at the crown that we want to act at a distance, far down the root from the point of force application. That is called placing a "moment" that leads to root "torque". But in some cases, we actually might prefer a tipping movement (like molar uprighting) and an orthodontist needs to recognize the movement on the clincheck because it might affect that simulation, as this case demonstrates.
