We were sitting in a restaurant one night when out of the blue she turned to me and said, "Most people have no idea how hard some people have to work just to appear normal from day to day". I had to think about it for a while.
Deal with it since 1999. Just gotta be open and be good to each other. Some folk are quiet about some open about it. Just treat everyone fairly and offer to help if they need. A friendly hello or how are you can go a long way. Proud of you Bubba

Bubba, I originally had mostly criticisms toward you, especially after the incident with the 88 fee weeks back. After this podcast, you have actually made me feel no longer alone. I too have struggled with depression, and I to got into a physical fist fight with my father back in May and I feel absolutely horrible about it. All I can think is that this is not normal, this doesn’t happen with anyone else. And it isn’t normal, but it does happen. I appreciate you talking about everything.

Bubba seems like a cool down to earth guy. This year at Michigan rain delay he threw football with the fans basically down the whole track. I know his arm was probably killing him but he still took the time to do something with the fans when he didn’t have too.. I felt that was pretty cool. Good luck with your fight against depression..
Ok bubba I know that life can throw us some curves . But just hang in there and when you are alone just talk to the good Lord my husband also had a ruff time in the seventies and he turned to the Lord and found peace so when you are down just look up stay like you are and please know that God loves you . Prayers and thoughts are with you my raceing friend.

I felt very related, I kinda lived the same. A lot of people complain about Bubba's immaturity, well, I think it takes a lot of maturity to just stay away of drama and problems that just ain't your fault, a lot more if these problems are inside your family, sure, it gets lonely and dark, but that's how freedom feels sometimes, specially when you travel alone so much and is all work like being a racecar driver. A big help for Bubba is to get close to positive people and true friends that help him get by his family issues and overcome that eventually.
My parents divorced in my senior year in high school and they both to this day do that same thing Bubba was talking about. "Did you hear what they did today?" I've always liked Bubba and after this interview, have even more respect for the man.

A professional driver today has so many expectations put upon them even before they get behind the wheel. It has to be difficult to find a balance between the personal and professional aspects. It's good that Bubba has opened up about his personal battles because it's allowed others to feel comfortable in sharing their own stories thus allowing the healing process to begin. I believe if anyone that could have helped in Bubbas' case, it would've been the King. The pain and sorrow Richard Petty endured has been monumental yet he kept going. I hope Bubba will consider that and reach out to the King if he hasn't already.
Glad to see this conversation, I'm sure we have some level of depression once i n our lives, and sometimes ongoing. The only way to beat it is to talk about it, trying to deal with it alone is dangerous at best! And, it doesn't define us as people it, it's part of us that needs to be identified properly and treated. One day at a time. Thank you all.
In a span of a year, 3 drivers admitted to suffering from Depression: Bubba Wallace, Cody Ware, & Stephen Leicht. I *really* hope that NASCAR is helping & assisting the people in the sport who are suffering from mental health ailments like those 3... ... because years ago there was another driver who was also suffering from Depression that NASCAR actually illegitimatly suspended back in 2006... That driver died in 2009, succumbing to his depression. I hope NASCAR learned from that so they don't make the same fatal mistake ever again...
I agree, these sports brands (NFL, NHL, MLB, NASCAR, etc) need to have some type of mental health program that these Athletes need. Because nobody knows what goes through their mind except them and for them to have a place for them to maybe vent or something could be very good for them.

Our fathers grew up at a different time than we did and it's hard to compare the difference to today. Our fathers always did the best they could, right or wrong, for their Families and sometimes we don't agree. I obviously don't know you personally but try to keep your focus on your career and the good people involved, Bubba as you will need that when your parents pass on.
This channel is getting more and more real all the time. Maybe Jr. can make the new NASCAR here with social media. He's looking long-term wise here. NASCAR needs every bit of what Jr. is doing now.

Divorce can definitely still be very depressing to go through, even in your 20's. I was 22 when my parents finally split, and I felt exactly like Bubba...my mom's stilll my mom and my dad was still my dad at the time. I didn't care so much about the divorce as much as i did my dad just completely walking out of my life. As soon as their divorce finalized, it was like he walked off the face of the earth. He wouldn't answer calls, texts, and if you tried to talk to him in person he would call the cops on his own son for trespassing. The only time I've seen or spoken to him in the last decade was twice when his parents died 3 years apart at their funerals. I really wish he would have just done this when i was a baby or a young child. At least that way i wouldn't have had 20 years to get to know him, just to have him abandon me. He midas well be dead bc i cant see him or talk to him even though we still live in the same county and I know where he lives. It truly sucks and has affected my depression greatly. I had already been diagnosed with it before, but after all this, it was taken to a whole new level. And the worse part of it is I have no idea why he chose to do this. Not knowing why your own father wants nothing to do with you eats you alive mentally. If i could just find out why, maybe i could finally move past all this. But until then, there's nothing else I can do except hope he comes around someday.
As a middle aged man that was diagnosed with Clinical depression 18 years ago, and have been through the gamut of prescriptions and countless hrs of counsel. I hate to break it to you Mr. Bubba, but this condition is a life long journey! 2 sessions just isn't going to cut it. I'm off prescriptions now and rarely see my counselor, but every day when I get out of bed in the morning "I" need to manage the depression! So if your serious Bubba, you've got a lot of work and a long journey ahead of you. It all starts with your counselor.
This is greatest show on earth....why Because it is the real deal.... you all might need to change the name to Dale's real deal... keep up the good work...be strong.

Bubba, I fought my dad once when I was 18. He and my mother were upstairs in the kitchen and I heard them begin to argue, something they had never done in front of us kids. Next thing I heard a loud, "SLAP!". Then I heard my mother say, "Don't you ever raise a hand to me again (explitive)". She never cusses. That was all I needed to hear. I ran upstairs and started punching him upside his head, then picked him up and tried to throw him over the second floor railing to the downstairs living room. He's punching me and clinging to the railing, I'm punching him and trying to pry his fingers off the rail so I could drop him 12 feet to the floor below. Suddenly, I hear my mother start screaming, "Stop! I hit him! I hit him! I hit him!". Cautiously, I stopped trying to rip him loose from the railing and we negotiated a break form the action. In the long run he wasn't mad at me, because I was protecting my mother. Not sure what he did to deserve the slap, but it must have been something because my mother is a good person. Time passed eventually, and they are no longer together. She's since remarried.
Man I went through the excact same when my parents divorced after 38 years of marriage.I was put in the middle.My pops wanted me to take his side Mom wanted me to take her side,even though I was a adult it still devastated me.
@bl st Honest I am still dealing with it.My dad got sick in my opinion from a broken heart and dyed two years ago and three months later my mom got married.I am just num from it all.
I had given up on Nascar, when Jr retired I didn't feel like cheering for anyone. I've had my problems with Nascar and stupid rules. But Mr Wallace is someone I can admire and cheer for. I really like his attitude and honesty. And I've been there with depression and anxiety. People love to say get over it. Wow, thanks for telling me how easy it is. It's not that easy.
Bubba always seems to do or say things during/after races that make me not care for him but this is the second interview with him that I’ve watched where I’m like “man I have to get one of his T shirts”
Reading a lot of comments below, I realize Bubba and NASCAR have played you people like a Harp From Hell... On 29 Nov 10, I lost my left knee because of my military service. I was in the hospital for 3 days, and became rightly depressed (according to the VA Psychologist). I did not give the doctors and nurses the finger... I can not curse at anyone... I did not attack anyone, especially someone getting medical care. I made a plan, and stuck to it... I focused on getting better, my rehab and doing what I could, so I could actually race again. After 3 additional surgeries on my left knee, and two on my right, I returned to racing, and have won 4 Series Championships, and in 2020, be racing in Europe with a Porsche Race Team... You can allow depression and situations to control your life, OR, you can take charge and control your own life... The decision is yours. And if Bubba is this weak in the head, he does not need to be racing in NASCAR, where he can kill someone!
I have never had to deal with depression or had anyone close to me deal with it and I hope this comment doesn't come off the wrong way but there is research being done with it tracing back to diet. The one study I read went into the chemical structure of foods, another found people with depression had a lack of red meat consumption. I have always had a happy go lucky attitude and lately I blame my meat and potatoes kind of diet. Again I don't won't to come off the wrong way and I believe there may be more to it than that, but it is interesting research and it may be a help to some people. There is a lot of science these days that people ignore because it doesn't fit their beliefs but everyone needs to keep an open mind, myself included!
Interesting that a Libra would have a temper. Usually, if out of balance it shows. Keeping things inside though I get. Glad he opened up about depression. Many affected and stay silent.
I hope his sponsorships improve his equipment. He is a driver with an actual chip on his shoulder,and if he gets top tier equipment he will be able to be more competitive.
Loved hearing about you and some of your past, Bubba and thank you for sharing. As a long time fan of the sport who grew inside of the sport of NASCAR and as a fan to a professional. Don’t ever change your style. You’re raw, you’re gifted and drivers come at you the way they do because they’re scared of you. Man to man weather this gets to you or not. I was a little pissed when I saw the altercation with Bowman BUT now it's more clear to what transpired and now it's like OK I GET IT. To me I'd rather see that than bubba retaliate say at Daytona or Talladega and risk hurting someone or himself.
been struggling with depression and anxiety for 18 years, my insurance never would cover my therapy sessions, i used my 401k to pay for my therapy, once that money dried up i pretty much got kicked to the curb, people lose interest when the money dries up.....
My family members have been though the same type of experiences. Fortunately I have been able to offer some assistance. Is there anyway that you can pay for the counseling sessions with payments. Is there anyone you can reach out to? I am so sorry that you have to suffer with these serious issues.

I agree, these sports brands (NFL, NHL, MLB, NASCAR, etc) need to have some type of mental health program that these Athletes need. Because nobody knows what goes through their mind except them and for them to have a place for them to maybe vent or something could be very good for them.

Our fathers grew up at a different time than we did and it's hard to compare the difference to today. Our fathers always did the best they could, right or wrong, for their Families and sometimes we don't agree.
I obviously don't know you personally but try to keep your focus on your career and the good people involved, Bubba as you will need that when your parents pass on.
This channel is getting more and more real all the time. Maybe Jr. can make the new NASCAR here with social media. He's looking long-term wise here. NASCAR needs every bit of what Jr. is doing now.

Divorce can definitely still be very depressing to go through, even in your 20's. I was 22 when my parents finally split, and I felt exactly like Bubba...my mom's stilll my mom and my dad was still my dad at the time. I didn't care so much about the divorce as much as i did my dad just completely walking out of my life. As soon as their divorce finalized, it was like he walked off the face of the earth. He wouldn't answer calls, texts, and if you tried to talk to him in person he would call the cops on his own son for trespassing. The only time I've seen or spoken to him in the last decade was twice when his parents died 3 years apart at their funerals. I really wish he would have just done this when i was a baby or a young child. At least that way i wouldn't have had 20 years to get to know him, just to have him abandon me. He midas well be dead bc i cant see him or talk to him even though we still live in the same county and I know where he lives. It truly sucks and has affected my depression greatly. I had already been diagnosed with it before, but after all this, it was taken to a whole new level. And the worse part of it is I have no idea why he chose to do this. Not knowing why your own father wants nothing to do with you eats you alive mentally. If i could just find out why, maybe i could finally move past all this. But until then, there's nothing else I can do except hope he comes around someday.

As a middle aged man that was diagnosed with Clinical depression 18 years ago, and have been through the gamut of prescriptions and countless hrs of counsel. I hate to break it to you Mr. Bubba, but this condition is a life long journey! 2 sessions just isn't going to cut it. I'm off prescriptions now and rarely see my counselor, but every day when I get out of bed in the morning "I" need to manage the depression! So if your serious Bubba, you've got a lot of work and a long journey ahead of you. It all starts with your counselor.

Bubba, I fought my dad once when I was 18. He and my mother were upstairs in the kitchen and I heard them begin to argue, something they had never done in front of us kids. Next thing I heard a loud, "SLAP!". Then I heard my mother say, "Don't you ever raise a hand to me again (explitive)". She never cusses. That was all I needed to hear. I ran upstairs and started punching him upside his head, then picked him up and tried to throw him over the second floor railing to the downstairs living room. He's punching me and clinging to the railing, I'm punching him and trying to pry his fingers off the rail so I could drop him 12 feet to the floor below. Suddenly, I hear my mother start screaming, "Stop! I hit him! I hit him! I hit him!".
Cautiously, I stopped trying to rip him loose from the railing and we negotiated a break form the action. In the long run he wasn't mad at me, because I was protecting my mother. Not sure what he did to deserve the slap, but it must have been something because my mother is a good person. Time passed eventually, and they are no longer together. She's since remarried.

Man I went through the excact same when my parents divorced after 38 years of marriage.I was put in the middle.My pops wanted me to take his side Mom wanted me to take her side,even though I was a adult it still devastated me.

I had given up on Nascar, when Jr retired I didn't feel like cheering for anyone. I've had my problems with Nascar and stupid rules. But Mr Wallace is someone I can admire and cheer for. I really like his attitude and honesty. And I've been there with depression and anxiety. People love to say get over it. Wow, thanks for telling me how easy it is. It's not that easy.

Reading a lot of comments below, I realize Bubba and NASCAR have played you people like a Harp From Hell... On 29 Nov 10, I lost my left knee because of my military service. I was in the hospital for 3 days, and became rightly depressed (according to the VA Psychologist).
I did not give the doctors and nurses the finger... I can not curse at anyone... I did not attack anyone, especially someone getting medical care. I made a plan, and stuck to it...
I focused on getting better, my rehab and doing what I could, so I could actually race again. After 3 additional surgeries on my left knee, and two on my right, I returned to racing, and have won 4 Series Championships, and in 2020, be racing in Europe with a Porsche Race Team...
You can allow depression and situations to control your life, OR, you can take charge and control your own life... The decision is yours. And if Bubba is this weak in the head, he does not need to be racing in NASCAR, where he can kill someone!
I have never had to deal with depression or had anyone close to me deal with it and I hope this comment doesn't come off the wrong way but there is research being done with it tracing back to diet. The one study I read went into the chemical structure of foods, another found people with depression had a lack of red meat consumption. I have always had a happy go lucky attitude and lately I blame my meat and potatoes kind of diet. Again I don't won't to come off the wrong way and I believe there may be more to it than that, but it is interesting research and it may be a help to some people. There is a lot of science these days that people ignore because it doesn't fit their beliefs but everyone needs to keep an open mind, myself included!
Interesting that a Libra would have a temper. Usually, if out of balance it shows. Keeping things inside though I get. Glad he opened up about depression. Many affected and stay silent.
I hope his sponsorships improve his equipment. He is a driver with an actual chip on his shoulder,and if he gets top tier equipment he will be able to be more competitive.

I was a little pissed when I saw the altercation with Bowman BUT now it's more clear to what transpired and now it's like OK I GET IT. To me I'd rather see that than bubba retaliate say at Daytona or Talladega and risk hurting someone or himself.
been struggling with depression and anxiety for 18 years, my insurance never would cover my therapy sessions, i used my 401k to pay for my therapy, once that money dried up i pretty much got kicked to the curb, people lose interest when the money dries up.....
My family members have been though the same type of experiences. Fortunately I have been able to offer some assistance. Is there anyway that you can pay for the counseling sessions with payments. Is there anyone you can reach out to? I am so sorry that you have to suffer with these serious issues.
