The reason the beams float is the slabs count as a whole block when it doesn't look like it. Carpet is the exact same if you put something on it then it will be floating.
Even though they're very complex Sky Factory and Galacticraft are cool mods you can even easily access via Twitch. =)
If you want to Jev. You can install the 1.13.2 version of the faithful texture pack. It works perfectly fine with 1.14.3/4 and it looks so much better. IMO

You can light up your rooms more if you use glowstone or sea lanterns on your floor and cover them w/ carpet. Just make sure to layer regular wood planks under the glowstone or sea lantern, so your ceiling of the room below it looks normal.
Make sure you back up your original world file before installing anymore mods.
Edit: Also, download orespawn mod, twight light forest, and lucky block mod. Good vid!

For your piston problem, make it a sideways opening door, place two sticky pistons facing the entrance, already powered so that cutting off power is what opens the door.
What you wanna do to activate the pistons is leave an empty space behind the piston, place a redstone torch on said block behind the piston so that its indirectly powering the piston.
Behind the torch block, you want a redstone trail that breaks off two ways, one for a lever under the door, and one for above so that you can enter and exit without breaking anything.
Having a redstone trail lead into the other end of the torch block allows for the canceling out of power for the torch, you should see the torch dim out as power to the redstone trail leads to it, indicating that the torch is no longer giving out a signal.
This will deactivate the piston and pull whatever block you use for the door.

You should turn off ‘render clouds’ so it gets rid of the blocky ones and just leaves the realistic looking ones.

Jev: Disable the default clouds by going to settings -> Video Settings -> Details and toggle clouds off so you only get the shaderpacks clouds.
Additionally, download BSL, SEUS and KUDA shaders and just install them all into your shaderpacks folder and switch between them and find the one you like best.

there are maps called "adventure maps" that are premade that you can put into your maps folder and then you basically play it as a quest it's actually quite fun to play them it'd be cool to see you try them out

Hey Jev you can press F7 to see what areas aren't lit and where mobs can spawn
Light your house more up, a good way to check where lighting is needed is by putting your brightness at the lowest setting so you will see very obvious dark spots in the house.

For the redstone don’t use slabs and have them facing the steps have them an extra block back on the right and have redstone connected to it and then have it going up on the inside of the wall going to the wall and on the block on the wall it’s touching put a switch and then turn it on you should be left with 2 pistons flush with the 2x1 hole and then put cobblestone on the stick piston and when you flip the switch off it will retract them revealing the whole.
You should try ray tracing and quest mods it will make your experience 10 times better
