      Good points all around, I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed in a Rev 2, and looking at the Summit on the website, it'll be more expensive than the Rev 2 initially. I had a Peak for a brief time, I sold it because I didn't feel I could justify the cost at the time, and I don't get on well with just 8 voices. But the filter sounded so good especially. So the Summit seems just perfect.

      @DJ_Kelpie 5 років тому

      I've seen people use the linnstrument with the peak?

    • @SandcastleTheory
      @SandcastleTheory 5 років тому +3

      @@DJ_Kelpie Yes, but not as an MPE controller per se. If you want true MPE expressivity out of the Peak, you can only achieve that monophonically; wherein you would map velocity, pitch, mod-wheel, and pressure to the LinnStrument's X, Y, and Z axes respectively. That's what you've seen other people do. However, this would not work for polyphonic patches, and that's what MPE is about. MPE means having autonomous control over ALL of the above articulations, per note, within the context of a polyphonic patch. For this to be possible, the synth must be able to receive and delegate MIDI information on channel-per-note basis, similar to how a multitimbral synth works, only without having to set up separate patches for each MIDI channel. Currently, the Peak cannot do this. Cheers!

    • @DJ_Kelpie
      @DJ_Kelpie 5 років тому

      @@SandcastleTheory I feel you should theoretically be able to do that with the way the summit cycles through it's voices.

    • @SandcastleTheory
      @SandcastleTheory 5 років тому +2

      @@DJ_Kelpie Oh, it's definitely possible for Novation to add MPE to both the Summit and the Peak. It's actually a fairly non-invasive process. Technically, most polysynths, even relics, can be reprogrammed to respond to MPE control; it just takes a little tweaking to the MIDI spec. The way Novation has been so forward-thinking, and how they continue to support and update their older synths, I honestly think they will implement MPE at some point. I certainly hope so anyway. The day is fast approaching when all synths will be expected to have MPE or bust. Software synths are already there. Currently, however, true MPE is not possible on the Peak. The Summit, on the other hand, could do a pseudo duophonic MPE, assuming that you can access both splits on separate MIDI channels, à la the multitimbral method I eluded to in my earlier post. The Summit is way too big for my needs though, and the keyboard would be redundant for MPE players like myself. Cheers!

    I'm really interested in purchasing this synth and making some early 80s synth-pop styled music and love the various sounds from that era (e.g. OMD, Soft Cell). As of current I don't play any instruments or know anything about music creation. Do step-by-step guides exist for complete beginners to both understand and become competent at using these (without the expense of purchasing beginner / multiple pieces of equipment)? Any recommendations?

      It's great to hear that you're considering Summit! It's a very versatile instrument that can create a broad range of sounds, including the ones you're hoping to achieve. It comes with many pre-made patches, and we've designed the layout to make sculpting your own patch from scratch as intuitive and logical as possible, working from left to right. Summit utilises a subtractive synthesiser architecture, which we explain in the User Guide -
      fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/downloads/Summit%20User%20Guide%201.1%20EN.pdf
      If you're new to synthesisers, you may want to explore the concept of subtractive synthesis more deeply to gain a better understanding, there are lots of useful, free resources online.
      In terms of recording and producing your own music using instruments like Summit, we'd suggest that you explore the included software. Summit comes bundled with Ableton Live 'Lite' for Mac and Windows PC. You can learn more about Live on the Ableton website here - www.ableton.com/en/live/learn-live/

    Looks great except… I was really hoping Novation’s next offering would include MPE support for my Roli. I am part of what I think is a growing market of users who badly want a reasonably priced, powerful desktop hardware synth with MPE support... all the features of Peak with MPE support. I know there’s some options out there for this, but if I am going to be spending big bucks, I want the synth to be backed by a major manufacturer such as Novation, Sequential or Moog.

    Unfortunately it's true that a custom true poly-pressure sensitive synth keyboard is a costly feature appreciated only by somewhat limited auditory, but there is place on the Summit's surface that could've benefit from some SL mk3/Launchpad Pro poly-AT pads, maybe a single row just above the keys(though possibly at cost of a slight increase in width).
    I hope that maybe the developers would consider a software solution. It's possible to allow transformation of the channel AT to one or several per-note-AT values. Some people use DAW scripts to use such feature with controllers that send only ordinary AT. Routing can be done on the basis of pitch(for example, to the lowest or to the highest note.), order in which notes were played, or velocity(below or above arbitrary threshold, and maybe modulated by velocity), random function, etc. Flexible built-in AT-translation would be able to provide significant portion of true polyphonic pressure's expressiveness.
    Not sure about how hard would it be to add such setting to the patch structure through firmware update though. Probably not too hard, but it's just a guess.

      Thanks for your interest! What kind of ideas did you have in mind? While Summit it still very much a current product of ours and we don't have any news or announcements to share about new products at the moment, we'd be happy to pass along any feedback or suggestions you might have to our Development Team for their consideration.

      Thanks! Glad you're a fan. That's right, Peak patches are fully compatible with Summit. Due to differences in their architecture, many of Summit's features can't be added to Peak through firmware.

    Do the knobs and sliders have MIDI remote control to a DAW? So, can you control VST synths using the knobs etc?

    • @NovationTV
      @NovationTV  5 років тому +1

      That's right. Many of Summit's controls transmit MIDI that can be used to automate parameters in your DAW or you use them to control plug-in instruments and effects.

      Hi Lucas,
      You can effectively use the Summit as a MIDI controller for your DAW.
      The control assignments can be mapped in a DAW. Within the user guide for the synth, you will find what messages are sent out from the knobs in order to make your assignments.

    So the keyboard is the same as on the SL MKIII? So, no polyphonic aftertouch? That's what keeping me from buying a SL MKIII...
    But I love that you have listened and included a input jack.
    Quick calculation: Two Peaks and one 61 key MKIII: Almost € 3.000,-... ( -> see edit )
    Edit: I just saw the Sonicstate SuperBooth 2019 interview of Gaz with Calc. Price point will be € 2.200,-. Way lower than I expected!

    • @okeribok

      Polyphonic aftertouch would be nice on this, but I don't expect it for this price. Maybe the Behringer CS80 clone will have it.

      @@okeribok As the keyboard is the same as a SL MKIII (see in the description by this video) I know it doesn't have polyphonic aftertouch. But I think that would have set this synth even further apart from the crowd.

    • @NovationTV
      @NovationTV  5 років тому

      Summit doesn't feature a sequencer. The internal arpeggiator is essentially triggered by note data which you can certainly control from an external source. Start/Stop of a latched arpeggiated sequence isn't currently possible from an external source.

      @NovationTV  5 років тому +1

      That's right. Each Multipart Control has its own colour to illustrate the Part that you're currently controlling. Part A is blue, Part B is orange and when working in Dual, the controls turn white. In this video, Chris is using an early prototype of Summit so the colours differ slightly to those on the finished product.

      From what I read earlier today on Music Radar, I believe so! "Control-wise, Summit uses the same semi-weighted 61-note keyboard as Novation’s recent SL MkIII controllers, which impressed us a lot when we reviewed them last year. As with that controller, the keyboard here is aftertouch-equipped."
