MarioB & Nicole another example would be the word “ask”. No offense, but many African Americans pronounce it as “ax”. Btw, you should also respond to *Key and Peele’s “text message”, “Gideon’s kitchen”, “Les Mis”, “telemarker”, “non-scary movie”, and “country music”* skits. Please reply to me if you did.
@@hendrixjoe555 I think it's part of the skit, with the idea being to subvert the expectation of the audience. Churlish is not a word one generally hears in spoken English, or sees in print. What I love about this skit is it's bald faced portrayal of the ridiculousness of regarding certain kinds of names or pronunciation of dialects of English as Superior or Inferior. By first reversing the trope, and then ending on a Perfektswort word like churlish, it reminds us that no party can feign ignorance when it is simply a subjective valuing for one kind of dialect over another.
Love, she was about to say "Oh, because he taught in the hood" and stopped herself. It's not racist, don't worry. Black people do choose odd names and pronunciations. It's not a secret or racist. That's exactly what the bit meant.
@@stellurwill7883 I had a White teacher pronounce Kareem Abdul Jabbar as Cream Ab-doo Jab-her. That was decades ago and I still think about that today.
It's funny because he's only taught, inner-city students so it's a culture shock for him. That's why Timothy can get away with leaving class to pick up his daughter.
oontur- mench the joke is he used to teach in the “ inner city “ and they all have weird names spelled differently which is why he pronounces them like that .
oontur- mench what sophisticated vocabulary? “Don’t think about messin with me” or “ ya feel me” ? Or “ you done messed up a a Ron! “ Very Sophisticated.
I’m in a new school this year and 2 students names I’ve gotten wrong all year, but this was because they never corrected me at the start of the year even when I said “please correct me if I’m wrong” evea, and emmaline. My new principal is also named O-shag-Hennessy, she considers herself the OG.
Good reaction...definitely genuine and empathetic...culture is just funny that way...a bit to add: genuine teachers mean no harm, most of them ask how do you spell your name: teacher of any culture will mess up students’ name of a different culture lol
these 2 are so funny! going to check out their channel/video pages! and they remind me SO much of my own extended family in NorCal, LoL!!🙋🏾♀️ one of my friends, who has a similar fam, says ones like ours like look like a California, major-metro area *classroom!!,* hahahaha!!💕😁🧞♀️🎶👩🏻🤝🧑🏽👩🏼🤝🧑🏻👩🏼🤝🧑🏾👩🏽🤝🧑🏼🌈🎼❤️️
in part 2, the substitute teacher never went to a school that had clubs (probably due to teaching in the hood for 20 years, there were probably no clubs at these schools). LOL
I am a substitute teacher and taking attendance is the most nerve wracking part of class. I have been at it so long that I find if I apologize before I start by saying "I am sorry if I mispronounce your name. Please just tell me how to say it," That really helps but you are right there are different ways to say names. Take Eva, could be EEva, Ava, or Ehva. Sometimes it is the simplest names (Blake) that will trip you up. Love this video. I can so relate.
"Aaron" and "Erin" are pronounced the same in the US, but elsewhere they're pronounced Aaron: [ARE-en] and Erin: [AIR-in]. Aaron is Hebrew and refers to an "exalted" male. Erin is Gaelic and is the feminine name for "Eire" (as in Ire-land).
I'm in the US and I don't pronounce "Aaron" and "Erin" the same. I pronounce "Aaron" like [æ-rin], "æ" as in "lax" or "apple", and I pronounce "Erin" like [eh-rin].
@@ConsciousBreaks That's interesting, I'm also in the US and have known many, many Aarons and have yet to meet one who does not pronounce it Air-In or Air-En.
The teacher did not describe A-A -Ron as childish and insubordinate , in fact he said Churlish and Insubordinate - Churlish - a word that means ‘ rude in a mean spirited and Surly way” , there by indicating that in fact he had a very good idea of the English language .
Late response but y’all missed the part about him being in the inner city where people have ratchet names and be pronounced real crazy like how he was saying it and also what y’all were saying about pronouncing it different. And the having kids in HS is a lot more common in the inner city [Hood] schools so that’s why he took it as a normal excuse
This was funny. I am not going to analyze why! Try Shiobhan! I worked with two managers with that name at the same time. It is pronounced shiv + awn. I saw their name tags before hearing their names, so was surprised. They were both from Ireland. (The one I was buddies with I once called Sheboygan, though I would not recommend this course of action.)
Shit true,, we blacks seem to pronounce shit the way it's actually spelled.. I know .. I spelled every last 1 of my kids. Names how I was gonna pronounce it
The video Key and Peele are making fun how black people have unique names. So the teacher is used to having extra pronouncement names. Also it's making fun of black schools having no extra curriculum. You guys missed punchline. When tape cut off why was lady crying when it went back on. What did you do to her?
03:03 Nicole thinks that the word churlish is a mispronunciation of childish 🙄. We really need people with knowledge to be reacting, it's embarrassing otherwise

Churlish is an actual word.
inner-city teachers know a lot of words
They actually thought he wanted to say childish
@@hendrixjoe555 I think it's part of the skit, with the idea being to subvert the expectation of the audience.

mean or rude i guess
@Dylan actually, linguistics, and not in school, self taught.
Thank you for adding absolutely nothing of value to the conversation though!

It also was a satire on how white teachers will pronounce black students names terribly wrong even if the name is not that difficult to pronounce.

That's because he's black lmao. Don't you get this simple joke...
Because Garvey knows how common teen pregnancies are.
I wish my teacher was like that lol
"Mosquito bit club"
"That was hurtful"
"Truthful"

The joke is his vocabulary is quite good by saying “insubordinate” “pray tell” “churlish” yet he won’t pronounce the names correctly
