Funny, I too am brought to tears each time I hear this beautiful discussion. As a former high school physics teacher, I used to play this at the year to my classes. Most sat through politely but probably didn’t take much in. But I’m sure every now and then a student would get a little of that “Feynman Inspiration.” Luckily, I usually would play this with the lights dimmed after perhaps showing another video clip…so I could hide my tears. ☺️

I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don't know anything about. But I don't have to know an answer, I don't have- I don't feel frightened by not knowing things. By being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose - which is the way it really is as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me."

We are indeed out here. Also keep in mind that the ignorant tend to have the loudest, most prolific mouths. The wiser individuals among us by contrast, I have found, tend to be more thoughtful and taciturn. We may be entering a period of history where that pattern must change to avert catastrophe, though. It may be well past time to become louder and braver.

Those who leave room for error and doubt are surely the more worthy of trust, but those with a deluded self confidence can imbue their nihilist conduct with powerful "certainty."

"The scientist has a lot of experience with ignorance and doubt and uncertainty, and this experience is of very great importance, I think. When a scientist doesn’t know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has a hunch as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty darn sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt. We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty - some most unsure, some nearly sure, but none absolutely certain.
    ~
Now, we scientists are used to this, and we take it for granted that it is perfectly consistent to be unsure, that it is possible to live and not know. But I don’t know whether everyone realizes this is true. Our freedom to doubt was born out of a struggle against authority in the early days of science. It was a very deep and strong struggle: permit us to question - to doubt - to not be sure. I think that it is important that we do not forget this struggle and thus perhaps lose what we have gained." -Richard Feynman, The Value of Science

Brilliant job, you've taken some of favorite interview clips and strung them together into a coherent statement of who this man was, and why he is so revered by those who have heard of him.

This man is why I am working to be a scientist. By this time in 2 weeks - I will have earned my first degree. Hopefully in 8 years from now, I will be back with a Ph.D and an even larger appreciate to all the wonderful questions we could never answer.

"I don't feel frightened about not knowing". Nice summary. I suppose Mark Twain holds some degree of responsibility for this idea that knowledge of a subject destroys aesthetic appreciation. He wrote as much in Life on the Mississippi about becoming a River Boat Pilot. But then his own writings belie this idea.

There's something comforting about watching this, and I don't just mean listening to the Feynman interview. Seeing that there are so many other minds who think the same way and get an enjoyment on watching this reassures me that I'm not alone in an intellectual sense.
