Have had my for a few years and love it, for the features you mentioned. It is a perfect everyday camera for when I do not have my bigger K-3 with me. It came in very handy when I traveled to Vietnam in September. The manual controls had enough adjustments that it saved many a picture that might have been missed by a more simple auto-everything camera. And that fast lens allowed me to get pretty good boketh in tighter close up shots. So even after a few years, this camera is still a great performer!
"If I had to choose between the Q and the MX-1, I would probably get both!"
Very nice. Love your videos.
My fave comment too
Such a lovely little Point and Shoot. Definitely going to try to get either the Q or the MX-1 first. My grandfather loved his Pentax cameras and he passed his Z-50p to me. Absolutely brilliant
Love waking up on a Monday morning to one of your videos! Great start to the day
eBay prices will skyrocket now xD
Just thought the same thing :)
They where already pretty high compared to other compacts of the time :)
I was just going to say that :)
I hope not got mine for 125 practically new from a girl who thought it was too complicated and I'm always on the hunt for another one
Glad I already have one then, though I wish I had picked up the black model instead.
You know ya boy's going up in life when he gets that audible sponsor
It definitely makes it possible for me to create more stuff that people ask for :)
Your videos are works of art.
Thanks for your kind words :)
CaseClosedTV totally! I come here to relax after work 👍🏻😉
Photography asmr.
This was my first digital camera, I think I got it 2015 :) The electronic zoom in macro is priceless and you have 2 macro modes, one giving you DOUBLE magnification.
The picture at 5:47 is so poignant, especially in the context of a funeral! You're a great photographer!
Thanks :)
I would ask Mattias to take pictures at my funeral, but I'm going to miss it by a couple of days.
...yes, I would be sitting there thinking about the sound of D700 shutter going off
Love your reviews, your humor and especially your model! Keep up the good work!!
Damn your reviews are absolutely fantastic your photographic talent makes all the difference. These are the videos i show people who ask me for gear to start their visual journeys with because its never the camera that makes the image its just a tool to help you.
I'm glad you think so :)
I remember when you posted the pentax q and I reccomend you try the pentax MX-1. I love my mx. Such a beautiful little camera. I hope you enjoy it and its epic pop up flash 👍👍👍
It is very enjoyable.
Martin, I wonder if you could share a link to your photos, maybe on Instagram or Flickr or something? I'm contemplating buying one of these and would love to see more examples from people who love it, 6 years after its release. Thanks!
me: i don't need another camera
mattias: *reviews camera that makes cat sounds*
me: 😩💸💸💸
This may be the greatest camera ever just because of the cat sounds. 😂
True!
@@mattiasburling You should try using cat sounds on your dog.
My MX-1 just arrived and I gotta say Pentax was ahead of its time!!
Nice review. I have a black version. Great camera for travel. Sharp lens, F1.8-2.5 with image stabilisation is very useful in low light situations.
So glad to see this review out finally. The MX1 wasn’t the camera I wanted it to be (still haven’t actually found that TBH) when I owned one in 2014/2015, but it is a lovely camera.
Hi, i'm trying to sell a silver edition one
I agree with everything you say in this video! A friend of mine has a Q and I was tempted to get one also, but was put off by the thought of carrying around several lenses. If I'm going to carry camera & lenses, I'll take my K1! The MX-1 is, for me as it is for you, the perfect 'jacket pocket' camera- great images (RAW of course!), a good solid feel (as it's a Pentax) and my black version is developing a nice well-worn look. My only reservation is battery life but it's no hardship to carry two spares, assuming I've remembered to charge them first!
I've used Pentax cameras for 40 years because they have the features I want, which isn't always the case with today's 'big two.'
Love your videos man, your dog must feel like a celebrity by now 😂
The old school pentax SMC lenses and the super takumar's are some of my favourite bits of glass and are absolutely amazing on my sony a7riii
Got mine on March 2013 and has traveled with me to many cities around the world. This little buddy is a legend now for sure :)
YES Mattias! I was hoping you would bring back this song in a video :) Really fits your aesthetic!
It's my last resort. When I can't find anything that fits and simply want to get done I bring out "Inner light".
I hope you didn’t have cat sounds enabled at that funeral 🤣
Nice review. Good to see someone appreciating some of the older but still good cameras. Did you ever review the Olympus Stylus XZ-1 or XZ-2? I have the 2 still and it is a lovely little camera.
The XZ-1 is one of my favorite P&Ss from back in the day. I took mine to the Paros and its images still amaze me. Same with the Ricoh GR iii and Q. One of the worst aspects of the smartphone era that we can no longer find small sensor gems like the these cameras.
Just got one from Japan after watching your video! After a week it arrived and has now replaced my x-e1 for street and travel photography. Such a fun camera to use!
I used the Pentax Mx-1 for 2 years, fantastic camera, now i use a Olympus E-m10 with 14-42 Pancacke lens. For my use, is similar but some pics of this little brick pentax are unique!
After two months of viewing this video, finally get one in black. Really like it. Thank You for your vids.
Enjoy!
Great review as always! +10 points for the tilting screen! ;)
Thanks! Yeah a tilt makes all the difference imo.
Wow amazing. I never even heard of this little beauty. It is the digital version of the legendary film MX. How amazing.
my first camera was a pentax bridge that had that screen saver feature. I really miss it after going to a dslr; it reminded you that your pictures were what mattered rather than your "photographer expertise" which is the feeling I get when greeted with a shutter/fstop settings screen. Subtle psychological cues.
23 October 2022: One of the great things about the videos on this channel is that you can always find something interesting to watch at any time, even years later, and like the camera in this one, it is yet another timeless classic.
Great camera and review! Thank you!
Watched the video from the link on Shutterbug. It inspired me. I needed a small camera to take some informal photos without dragging my Canon 7D Mark ii or my 5D mark iii around. Did some research and decided this camera would fit my needs perfectly. Looked for used ones and found one on ebay (black) from Japan for $288 in great condition (Manual in Japanese). A week later it arrived. Never had so much fun working with a camera. My venturing into photography started with a Pentax Spotmatic in the early 70s. This is like old home week. Thanks.
Hi Mattias, thanks for the response to my earlier comment on your latest upload and tip on this camera. It is very similar to the Olympus XZ-2. I don't see too many Pentax cameras for sale here in Canada but I will keep an eye out. Again, thanks for the video and your outstanding photos. Have a great day.
Glad you enjoyed it. Another older point&shoot I have a video about is the Olympus Stylus-1.
Nice review! This actually reminded me, that I have one of those beasts in a drawer somewhere! :)
Noo, you hav etc use it or sell it. It deserves to be out and about ;)
I had the chance to get one virtually new for 150 pounds about 4 years ago... didn't at last, silly me! I have the original Q but the MX-1 is hard to find nowadays. Great review, absolutely stunning pictures.
Having the Q you are all set :)
just discovered this camera and It's at the top of my wishlist now. I bought a k-70 in January thinking It'd be useful for 3D photoscanning but fell in love with taking photos, now I'd like something simple to take everywhere when I wouldn't want to bring my big camera.
I just toured India for three weeks with my Pentax MX-1. Still a great point & shoot that has excellent options and flexibility even in the simplest modes. Absolutely a steal for the $250 I paid for it back in 2012! I love the weight of the brass and the pivoting screen, mine is the all black version.
Would you be able to share a link to those photos? Would love to see recent photos taken with this 2014 camera! Thanks!
I really enjoy your reviews , especially of Pentax cameras.
Im happy to hear that!
The picture of the minute 5:50 is just beautiful and mesmerizing. I love it
I too loved that one.
I just picked up one of these little beauties in black for $280 off eBay. My copy was close to mint. I have not really had a chance to take it out for a stroll around town, but I cannot wait. What a great little camera!!
I keep coming back and watch your videos. And I just realize, it's because of your cute dog much more than the quirky cameras you're talking about!
I've always loved the Pentax Q : )
Great review and impressive images. I didn't know such camera exists.
Awesome video man! My gas on this is strong
That picture of your dog's iris is simply gorgeous!
I'm surprised you didn't mentioned the MX-1 shares its sensor and optic with the Olympus XZ-2, as well as the tilt screen ; therefore, if you don't mind being a little less fancy, for image quality and some usability improvements (thumb rest pad, front grip...), you can also keep an eye on the Olympus.
Great video as always and now I can't decide whether to get the Q or this one! I'm wondering if you've checked out the Pentax K-01 since I've seen it about the same price as the other two. Keep up the good work!
Great video, that image at 05:47 is amazing.
TWO out loud laughs on this one. Nice!!! Totally agree about the tilt screen, btw. Well done.
You made me buy one. I received it yesterday and I'm quite happy...
I love this videos were you review old gear. Do more pls
I will.
It reminds me of my beloved little Olympus Miu II I had in the late '90's. (That you always have it with you)!
That camera was simply the best camera I've ever owned.
Not because it was better technically, but because it was always in my pocket.
The best camera being the one you have with you!
It also took fantastic 35mm shots with Fuji Film in it and never missed focus or exposure.
Hi Mattias and thanks for your entertaining and informative videos, I really enjoy them, the way they make me think about cameras and the way I approach photography. I had an LX7 which I really liked, it handled beautifully, but it died. I replaced it with an XZ-2 but I'm finding the menu system frustrating and having issues setting it up correctly for my use. I have the opportunity to pick up an MX-1. It seems much akin to the XZ-2 but from your video the menu system and set up seems much easier, more intuitive. Any advice on switching from the XZ-2 to the MX-1? Regards, and again thanks for all your great vids. Trevor.
Really great review
I have them both. it's really a goto camera in my bag for everyday opportunity. But now I just bought a set of ricoh GXR and now this is the one i'm using.
Love the GXR.
I missed out on one. Only one's available are from Japan.
Another great video.
Now Pentax will get a Mattias tax so it's the Mattias Pentaxtax
Awesome Video as always! I'd love to know how it performs against the samsung ex2f!
That's a camera which I gave as a present to my daughter few years ago. The price was around $200. This is very similar to Olympus XZ-1/2, which has the same lens, but it can accept EVF or a flash via hotshoe. Looks like we have pretty similar camera collections. I also have Q-S1, NX Mini and MX-1, and I also have Coolpix A, Fujifilm XF10 and Canon G9XII.
Will you try the pentax k -01? Also a very special camera...
Reversal Film jpgs are great with this camera. Beautiful colors.
I would LOVE to get my hands on an MX-1! However, the prices on these are absolutely ridiculous. In the past year, I bought an RX-100, G16, and an LX7 all together for less that $300, which is about their going rate for one MX-1. But I will keep my eyes peeled because you never know. It's the thrill of the hunt.
Hi, i'm trying to sell one
Bought an MX-1 pretty much entirely from this video. It's great! The IQ and colors are excellent, and it can pull of the "3D" look I get from my Fuji X-H1. The DNG files also very flexible considering. My first "premium" point and shoot and it's very much worth.
That's great to hear Jeremy as I am thinking of doing the same thing! I'm curious if there's a link to your photos with it that you might share? I'm still working up the courage to decide.
@@denniscrommett Hi Dennis,
My IG handle is @shlomo_yakvo, I've posted some shots on there, I name the camera in the description. It's a great camera, I reccomend it!
awesome reviews
I swear you could review a literal potato and make it sound amazing.
I would hope. Potatoes are awesome.
Boil, frie, mash, chips, soup, the possibilities are endless. You can play with them, paint, sculpture use in guns.
Its healthy and cheap. Super easy to grow and is actually the foundation for the Swedish society as we know it today.
There was a serious food shortage in medieval times that Potatoes pretty much solved for us.
So definitely, buy a potato :)
I'll tell you another interesting thing that Pentax like you said is all the in camera raw processing so many little tweaks especially on the gr and gxr... another really interesting thing I found about Pentax and these little cameras in general they upload great on social media with minor tweaks can you barely have to do any downsizing I never do actually . I don't know something about. Pentax Files
Hi Mattias... Thanks for the review... All your pictures are so creative and inspiring... I read somewhere the most compacts are not manufactured by their OEMs at all but are outsourced. For example, the MX1 and the Olympus XZ2 are basically the same camera both manufactured by Sanyo. Do you know if that is true?
I have one. Superb little camera. It's lens is sharp and has macro capabilities. Great for video recording live concerts as it's mic never saturates with high volume levels.
Looks like a fun camera, thanks for the review :-)
I was so close to buying this when it was released.
It would have been a fun camera to own.
I got a new silver one for $250 about 5 years ago. If I had waited a few months longer I could have gotten a new one for $200 from Woot! It's one of my favorite cameras, fun to use and will take very good pics with ease.
@@dinoddd007 If you enjoy/enjoyed it then I would not be upset over the $50. That's great. I'm sorry I missed out on this one.
@@EgdeFilms hi Matt, i'm trying to sell an silver edition one
I only come for you're photos and your dog! The camera's just a bonus !😁
Got a black one for sale. Keeping my silver version. really do love this camera so much.
The image at 5:48 is just so good. I love the little girls expression.
Thanks :)
i have the pentax Q with 3 lenses based on your review and recommendation and after watching this review which i've been looking forward to, i think i gonna have to get the mx-1 and in black which i can get and as a take everywhere camera it would suit me more because of being a fixed lens and i travel lite everywhere i go.
If you have the Q you might as well stick with it imo. Its so special.
@@mattiasburling i'll probaly have both lol
Intuitively beautiful camera and marvelous review as always. Any plans to review its very closely related but more playable sibling, the Olympus XZ-2, or even a more distant cousin, the Casio Exilim EX-10? They both share the same lens and sensor with MX-1 but each has their own different taste, and seem way underexposed compared with MX-1 despite belonging to the same era and sitting on the same perch.
So many cameras, so little time :)
I have the original 35mm film MX and now I want the MX-1!
Well I was all set and wanting to save for a Leica D-Lux type 109 and then I see this! And the black brass model even costs a little less than the Leica! Thanks for making my decision way harder!
So my one year moratorium on buying new stuff has ended and after about a week of hunting, I found a lovely silver one in great condition for a wonderful price. Pentax is my thing and I see a lot of street shooting fun happening. This will be the third Matthias reviewed camera I have bought ever the years. Wait...4th....yeah. I am on a new moratorium until after Christmas.
I hope you will have fun with it :)
How much did it cost you if i may ask ? I'm also looking for one :)
@@andreatilli6227 $240. Just a hair over 1,000 shots from the previous owner. Charger, 3 batteries.
and it is a sheer delight for street!
@@mattiasburling OMG! It is so fun. I know this may sound weird, but I like it better than my GX-85, so I am giving to a friend's 13 year old who has an interest in photography. I am not a fan of touch screens and the panasonic menu system. I am sure it is fine. I just have been using the pentax and canon ecosystem so darn long.
Thank you for your videos.
Even I already have my RX100M3 to fulfill the same purpose, I still want to buy MX-1 after watching this video.
Still my favourite camera. Just so pleasant to use and great results too.
Same size sensor has the Canon s95 but much cheaper in second hand market, really pocketalbe and with much loved CCD type of sensor. It's worth a shot!
dude, thanks for sharing this one
Love how he sneak peaks cameras
"Get both"
This was the funiest part of the video xD
That got me too 😂 this was a funny review.
Yes am death too :)
Brass, Meow + Splash-screen
Why did no one mention this before?
I'd've gotten one of these years ago
Thanks!
P.S. The Yellow Vests reminded me of Hunter S Thompson recently with all the police brutality - I remember his stories covering the Chicano communities in California, with police aiming gas and flash cannisters at the heads of leaders in order to kill or retire them. The militarisation of European police is especially worrying.
This looks like the result of bringing the K1000 into the digital age, and that’s a good thing, that camera is gorgeous.
Ah I remember considering the Pentax MX-1 a few years ago as a cheap buy on eBay but got a Fujifilm X-F1 instead as my cheapie point and shoot
You can get a couple Q's/MX-1's for the price of that 08 Wide Zoom lens these days. I have a black MX-1, a Silver Q7, and the set of Q10's from the Evangelion films (and that's only after years of watching close and finding them for a fraction of their general asking price).
I think I still prefer the versatility of the Q-S1 especially the ultra-wide angle lens. I don't really fancy electrical zoom to be honest. Nonetheless, I wish Pentax will have a Q-S2 soon and further expand their Q mount lens line up with more primes.
The pics are so amazing
Jeez - I always wanted and tracked one down in 2017...my used Pentax collection is equaling your’s!
Did you ever try old Nikon compacts P7100/7700/7800. P7700 is from same generation as that MX I guess. Has a 1/1.7 inch sensor 12mp, fully articulating screen. OK zoom lens (slow to extend and retract). Very customisable so its nearly a confusing menu. After a year the Coolpix (never heard of MX-1) which I still have but hardly use, I got Pentax K5-iis .
One compact camera I miss was the Canon G16, the last of it's kind in my opinion.
I love my G16 ...
Mattias....
I enjoy watching your videos on older equipment and I watched this video with interest.
Now a used Pentax M X 1 used is about $350 and a used Fuji X70 is anywhere from $450 - $550 or higher.
Which one would you buy? Is there enough advanced features on the X70 to justify the additional cost?
Best,
Duane
I come back to this video for the picture of the girl looking back at the camera, it's easily my favourite M. Burling picture.
The cat sound won me over!! XD
Man, this MX-1 looks adorable as well as the Q's. If they could jam a 1" sensor into these form factors, they will be selling like hot bread!
There would be no real benefit of a 1” sensor, just doubled the size of the camera. There has been similar systems with 1”, they all failed.
@@mattiasburling Hi, thanks for your reply and sharing your insight! What's your view on Fuji X30, which also has a tiny sensor?
i am glad that a pro came out saying that one can use a straight out of camera image! I am an amateur film shooter but I do shoot digital mostly on my phone and sometimes with my K-50. I have zero interest in post processing my shots. You don't need to post process with film so why does one need to do it with digital? Try to shoot a great picture right from the start. I did buy a Pentax MX-1 recently and I am excited to see what it can do. This purchase was inspired by my MX film camera. DSLRs are very big and I am not sure why. Pentax, I think should have just re--issued their digital cameras using the K1000 or LX or MX body. Much more attractive and they would have been even cooler than Fuji.
