I myself Angel would just used the headers you used for mock up. You know they will clear the obstacles. Clean them up and refinish them they’ll look good. Or just do a piece from here and a piece from there and kinda make it work. Can’t wait to see it run. Stay cool
Man I love it when you were talking about reviving it to 6500 cause you want to hear it and it blowing up and you said “it might “with that look on your face I cracked up. That was priceless, especially with your plan to grab another block from the junkyard if it does blowup . As for the headers , see if you can get the guy that made Sarah’s headers for the Celica to modify yours to clear the spark plugs and engine mount, with info from you , or just clean up the other headers and high heat paint them or powdercoat them .
My Dream car would be a Porsche 911, but I have also loved Type III Vdubs. I have owned 3 of them and am ashamed to admit I failed to buy a Type III Ghia back in the day😢. I had to sell my 72 Notchback and all my spare parts when I found out how expensive it would be to build one in the States. I enjoy watching your ( and Sarah's) content as you show a realistic budget rebuild!!
Here is a couple of options: 1. you can dent the header tube and it won't have any effect on flow. 2. you can move the engine to the passenger side by changing the mounts 3. find some long tube headers which will be better for power anyway, shorties really don't give you much power comparatively.
Reverse headers so the exhaust meets inside the engine bay like you were putting a turbo in. Then a custom combiner pipe, route it down passenger size. Unique look, unique sound, zero worries about steering rack.
It's the Scrap Stang Put an equal tube on one side and the heat wrapped on the other. I wouldn't cut the mount. If I HAD to move the mount I would remake it completely, not just butcher up what I did already.
There's a short porcelain version of the spark plugs that was used on the 5.0 Explorer/Mountaineer engine that the GT40P heads came on. Combining the short spark plugs with boots of various angles can give you the clearance you need. There are headers specifically made to work with GT40P heads, but they tend to be fairly pricey and can have fitment issues with older cars.
Hey Angel, if you can catch the episode of Engine Masters, where they smashed the headers with a sledge hammer and then dyno'd the engine after each smashing, the engine lost virtually NO horse power nor torque with the headers almost smashed completely flat. putting little dents in your headers for spark plug clearance should not hurt your performance at all.👍👍👍
I was thinking that too. It looks to have plenty of room to move out of the way without having to change the overall length. (But I’m not there to check properly)
My dream car is a 66 mustang coupe. 289. Simple, and classic. But, I also have a dream to tow it with a 66 f350. Total 66 package. And I've finally found an f350. 😊 Can't wait to hear the Scrap stang run! It keeps me motivated. 🤙
Go with twin 98-mm air-boosters. That should add some kick to the go peddle. (Might damage drive train and engine… But if you are looking for that thrill ride🚀).
I vote for modifying the mount. Good headers can be expensive, and even then its still no guarantee that you wouldnt have to modify them to fit properly.
Stopping can be accomplished by using reverse. 😁 A Knipex giveaway already? 😳 Glad to see the numbers growing so fast. If those other headers work and cosmetics are their only issue, clean them up and repaint them. If it eliminates spark plug and wire issues, i think you'll be ahead. Equal length isn't really important. David Visard on Motortec dispells the myth in one of his videos.
ON the headers; when you moved the engine back, you moved into "terra incognito" for production pipes. Some may fit, others not, and the steering gear adds a whole new dimension to it. Btw, will the old headers fit since you shifted the engine? I think Lokar has a chain drive set up that will offset your steering shaft 6" or so, and give you yet another pathway.PS; Yes, every bit of it. Crafting a car with stone knives and bearskins is very different than when you have all the tools and tricks. But this is "Scrap Stang" and any "workarounds" to get from A to a finish is what we came for.
I had a 1964.5 Mustang straight 6 with 3 speed manual as a 16-year-old. What a nightmare car, but I loved it. I had to replace clutch every year, something about the drive train being from an 8 cylinder. Owned that car for 15 years (but always had more than one car.) Family mechanic wouldn't work on it but would talk me through what I needed to do. Dream car? How about an old Ford Bronco? Landcruiser?
If it's possible I would take the heat tape off sand them down and having them powder coated. Especially if you know they fit. You spent 80 bucks on the ones that don't fit. A few more bucks on powder coating and you got it.
Remember, if you clearance the motor mount you have to take enough, not just for them to fit, but enough to account for engine movement as it torques against the mounts. Pretty sure you will have to take a big chunk out... I vote that you use the original headers or bite the bullet and buy ones that will fit.
Hi Angel, you are a darn good welder! If it were me I would cut and weld on the equal length headers. Buy some bends and slightly modify the tubes that interfere with the motor mount and are too near the spark plugs. Cut and paste a little!
Dream project- (too many to list)the latest car of interest is a MK1 Scirroco in a nice metallic blue with a cream vanilla racing stripe, fender flares like on Sarah's Celica except body color, and fat tires to match with GTI enhancements- or a MK2 Scirroco with the Helios Blue treatment- both in color and performance enhancements- or a 1974 Olds Cutlass S- or a 1964 Pontiac Tempest- maybe a Porsche 944 or 928- or a 1975 Bellanca Super Viking with all the tricks. The VW's would be good apocalyptic cars as they are fun to drive and economical when gas is scarce, the airplane thrown in there because- why not!!!!
My dream car project would be a 1958 Cadillac hearse... there would be so much room for activity! Also, I could use it to pick up lumber for woodworking projects. I could call it Project Lumber Taker!
About the headers... spend some time watching some of the episodes of Engine Masters where they test headers. Based on that, you'll find a few things that might matter to you... 1) long tubes will make more power; 2) equal length doesn't really equate to more power; 3) denting tubes doesn't hurt power all that much. But hell, you're a "build it" kinda channel, so maybe cutting and welding the mounts would be better content? IDK, but nice to see progress being made on the car. And cheers for the 10k.
Great video! My favorite project vehicle would be my 69 GTO but right now I’m having fun working on my 88 Corvette. Keep up the good work Angel, really enjoy the videos!
Give away, can't do point 2 since not having instabook or whatever. Hope the winners will enjoy there price. Dream project I have shared before; 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air sport coupe. Stock outside (except for wheels) and interior, underneath at least bring it up to date or maybe even a little more to sporty
@@rookie__pilot will not be able to watch the stream live, it's 23:15 here in the Netherlands and need to work tomorrow. Will for sure check it out ASAP
The motor mount on the driver side that you have an issue with the header, slot, the hole for the bolt all you need is 3/8. If you slot the hole, you can do one of two things, you could fill the bottom of the hole with weld , and grind it flat. Or two you could put washers on the outside of both motor mounts and weld them into place. Since you have solid motor mounts, there won’t be very much flex when the engine is under torque once completed, it will not be noticeable.
I'm pretty sure my dream car is currently what I'm working on. 1970 mercury cougar hertz. It's has been saved from a salvage yard and modified. Has a rod and custom mustang 2 suspension. Watching you gives me motivation to work on it. Im at probably the same point you are.
There are a few dream projects and I honestly have 3 of the 4 with 2 of those needing work. 70 Buick GS (my first car and how I learned), 55 Buick century 2 door 4 hole, Just needs the chrome put back on. Stock everything. My current project 65 mustang, and the last one I would like to have is a 67 or 68 Camaro. Would also be nice to have a 64,65 C10 shortbed.
BRO! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SUCCESS, WELL DESERVED!! My dream project is a 1967 Mustang non-fastback. I had one as a project as a teenager, sadly I discovered girls and other bad habits soon after getting it so I never finished it. Ugh. Such a dumb kid I was!! I don't have Instagram, just thought I'd still share my dream project anyway lol.
Option 3, clearance the motor mount. Notch it and use a small piece of tubing to fill the notch. Then, maybe modify the passenger side header to clear plugs
I would love to take a new edge Mustang and make a 2000 Cobra R clone, but try to reduce weight wherever possible. Things like replace steel body panels with carbon fiber, use a aluminum 32V 5.4L instead of cast iron, carbon fiber wheels in place of the aluminum ones, etc.
I would flip the headers since there is so much room in front of the engine. Would be easy to route the exhaust, without having to worry about the steering or firewall getting in the way. Just my two cents.
Plug clearance + motor mount? Re do the old headers. Any additional hp can be gained in other ways. Besides, changing that pipe length & flow would defeat thier purpose to begin with. Weaken mount contact leverage. Even gm goes too far with intake coolant things. Corvette has fluid pipes to warm intake...so all the corvettes in the arctic circle can start sub zero & get you to the whale blubber factory.
Mismatched headers would seem to be the perfect ScrapStang solution. I know you like the idea of equal length headers, but those seem to have issues already with plug clearance. I’d be looking for different headers.
I'm sort of working on my dream project. For the last 3 years I've wanted to get a vehicle that I could go off-roading, do some light rock crawling and camping with. Right now I am building up a 98 4Runner that has already been a lot of fun out on the trail, but will be more fun when it is built up and I am less concerned about breaking it haha
it may be better to run the manifolds facing forwards so it can clear all the steering and mounts. also the passenger side looks like it could be cut off at the flange and extended a bit to get more sparkplug clearance.
My dream project car would be a Ford Mustang GT S550. I would love to have one that was in rough shape were I would not fear making mistakes on it. I want to turn something that is junk into a treasure (2015-2023).
Angel sir I have headers on my camaro that had the same issue. Accel spark plugs makes what's called a header plug I've been running them for 15+ years they are pricey but solve lots of clearance issues
Thanks to your inspiration I will be starting on my grandfathers 1965 F100 this month.
I love to hear that! Hell yeah, get er done!
I myself Angel would just used the headers you used for mock up. You know they will clear the obstacles. Clean them up and refinish them they’ll look good. Or just do a piece from here and a piece from there and kinda make it work. Can’t wait to see it run. Stay cool

This was done on a Cessna 172RG Cutlass as well. It makes for a unique throaty sound.

It's the Scrap Stang Put an equal tube on one side and the heat wrapped on the other. I wouldn't cut the mount. If I HAD to move the mount I would remake it completely, not just butcher up what I did already.

😂 Commented the same thing
don't mess with the motor mount, maybe reconfigure the problem header tube.
I was thinking that too. It looks to have plenty of room to move out of the way without having to change the overall length. (But I’m not there to check properly)

Powder coating won't hold up, but ceramic will.
I'd clean them good, then hit it with a VHT spray bomb. You can always touch them up.
Upside down with a big turbo!
You need to get steering shaft etc. and all mocked up first... Imo
Modify the tube using pie cuts? I think you know who has done a UA-cam on that before. There even in town.

Should mention distributor gear match to cam, Roller cams usually need a bronze or OEM need a steel gear follow cam manufacture specs.
