@@hasselett That's the long and short of it. In the past, people watched superhero movies because when they went into the cinema, they were expecting a good mixture of action, comedy, and an interconnected universe with consistently evolving characters. The suits looked at this, and only saw "People like movies with super-powered people and lots of CGI destruction, that's the ticket!", and have been trying to milk the audience based on their misunderstanding while ignoring the actual reasons why the genre became popular.

I think Blue Beetle might have had a chance if DC had known what they were doing, the character has actually had some moderate success in the comics and through being a significant side character with good adaptations to animation, both Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice.
I actually did have some initial interest in the movie, but what killed that interest was:
    1) The "Batman is a Fascist" line from the trailer
    2) The attempt to promote the movie on racial grounds
    3) That the Beetle suit itself was using a 'happy, friendly, encouraging' personality rather than the bloodthirsty killer war machine psychopath personality that Young Justice used so well
    4) That DC is just an ugly dumpster fire overall right now
The movie may have had a chance in concept, but in practice DC did everything wrong.

I just remember watching endgame and thinking "Yeah, this is the peak. It's all downhill from here." Say what you want about endgame, but the finale of it felt earned, at least. It was a decade of buildup, and seeing just about every movie represented in that final fight felt special. From someone who had been watching it since phase 1, it felt like a great ending to one of the biggest risks that a film studio has ever taken. I consider phase 4 apocrypha.

Kind of like the end of "It's a Wonderful Life", where every character who played a part in the story has a walk-on and contributes to the happy ending. After that, the story is done. There's nothing more to say, and we don't WANT anyone to keep talking. We want to leave with our nicely-wrapped present in our hands, and head home happy.

    • @KarazolaX
      @KarazolaX Рік тому +5

@RichSmithson Yeah, it stuck out like a sore thumb, but the movie itself besides that is honestly pretty fun. I wasn't bothered by fat thor, it was a bit over the top but I honestly liked it, because it showed how damaged Thor was. He didn't think he had anyone left who he needed to be protector for. All of his family was dead, and his he'd known for thousands of years were gone.
The stuff with Hawkeye was great, and the finale was a great set-piece to get everyone in the fight in a meaningful way. People didn't like the alternate timeline thanos but it was a decent way of the movie having its cake and eating it too, so they could use the more classic thanos design and have his children show up to fight. The only thing I wished they'd done was set up some properties between infinity war and endgame so we could have gotten more in that period of time, we got far too little of that five year gap to soak in.

Funny thing about Blue Beetle. In the 80s there was a manga called The Guyver: Bio-boosted Armour which was about a teenager who was forcibly infected with an alient parasite that gave him super cool armour, an array of weapons, superhuman strength, and an autopilot whenever the hosts life was in danger and is hunted by an evil megacorporation who want the armour for themselves.. Guardians of The Galaxy became a whole film saga that performed consistently well despite the fact that the whole ensemble of characters were virtually unknown. Its not the characters that are the problem its the way the studios are telling and marketing these stories. I actually really liked Morbius from being introduced to him in Spider-Man the Animated Series and wouldve loved to see him get his own film. That interest died for me when they cast Jared Leto.

    • @jimthar17

Yeah but remember they were intertwined with the whole MCU and Thanos thing too. So it was almost required reading to keep up with the story that was being laid out. I'm not saying they're bad movies but just that you would have missed a lot if you didn't see them. If a GOTG movie had come out years ago outside the framework of the already existing MCU then it likely would have bombed. Though I will say that the original GOTG movie is one of my favorites in the MCU. They tried that "required reading" trick with Captain Marvel too but I think people were wise to it at that point. Same with Ant Man but that was earlier in the timeline. All three are characters most people didn't know or care about.

There are also some very insufferable lines attempting to be snuck in under the radar. The disappointing thing is that they did not give the lead of the film a chance to shine. He seems to be a fine actor with what he was given, but he wasn't given very much. He doesn't overcome anything, he doesn't come up with an ingenious plan to solve a difficult problem he's just "hero kid who likes his family". Susan Sarandon was particularly awful in this and the director's inexperience was obvious. The big names probably walked all over him.

    1) The film was originally set to be exclusive for Max (formerly HBO Max), but it was granted a theatrical release.
    2) DC Studios CEO James Gunn (who was hired after the film's production) stated that while the film is set in the DC Extended Universe, it is ultimately "disconnected" from the universe.

@@emperorsean1Marvel Comics would not exist if they didn't steal shit from DC.
I wanna tell you a story about a team of young super-powered people, who wear matching, two-tone uniforms, who strive to protect a world that fears and hates them under the tutelage of a wheelchair bound mentor.
IT'S CALLED _THE DOOM PATROL_ AND IT CAME OUT SIX MONTHS BEFORE X-MEN #1!
"Oh the Flash is doing a multiverse now?"
Mofo, the Flash was establishing a superhero multiverse in DC when Marvel was still doing romance comics.

I thought Blue Beatle was part of the Transformers universe. That's how much I care about this movie.

No, Blue Beatle is the guy who got dropped by the band just before they got famous. His alter ego is Stuart Sutcliffe.

Aside from Cobra Kai superfans and the 10 people that like Blue Beetle comics, I don't know how anyone is supposed to be excited about this. It definitely never had a shot at being a 'superhero blockbuster'

Cobra Kai was good because the people making it CARED and made a serious effort.
      This? Not so much!

He's been in Batman the Brave and the Bold, Justice League Action, Teen Titans animated movie and Young Justice. I fell in love with the character because of Batman the Brave and the Bold

I miss the good ole days of the infinity saga and the excitement that it brought. Even miss the days when Cavill played Superman and Batflek played Batman,Gadot played WW, Fisher played Cyborg etc…
Both “universes” could have been saved if they listened to the fans.
