- My first beater car had engine failure, so I decided to buy another beater. Here is my current car, a $2,100, auction toyota that I'm driving around. Find out why I chose to purchase another used vs. new car. Enjoy

FIRST!!
Definitely good to have a beater for the winter so I don’t have to drive my main all the time.
I used to own a beater. I kept having to sink money in it because something or the other would need to be fixed or replaced and this was a 1999 Camry so supposed to be reliable. I don't know how to fix cars so I would have to pay a shop every time. Finally, the transmission needed to be replaced and it was a 4k job with labor included and the car was only worth $400 so I sold it for scrap. I remember constantly being stressed & worried that something or the other would break down and I would be late for work and get fired.
So I made a decision, never again. No more beaters. I bought a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage which I've maintained well and I've been driving without problems for the past decade. The peace of mind that comes with driving a brand new car under warranty is priceless.
I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right. I'm saying it depends on your situation. You seem to know how to fix cars and you have your brother to help so perhaps buying a beater is smart for you. For me and people like me, buying a brand new Mirage or brand new Nissan Versa (manual or CVT) for 16-18k brand new and driving it without worries for over 10 years is the way to go!!!!!!
I agree there are also sellers who will hide serious problems and sell that as a beater car. A lot of people know how to inspect properly because of their time, money or privilege but a lot of people don't know or didn't get chances to know.
I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a Versa. The Nissan CVT transmissions are known to be problematic. I've been driving an old car for 10 years and just paid a shop $4300 to replace the transmission. I will see if that was the right decision, but it was still cheaper than buying a new car.
@@kensmith2796 Notice I suggested buy a brand new Versa. Brand new Versa has their CVT covered under warranty for 5 long years so will be replaced for free
@@johnkonde1975 Why recommend something you know is unreliable? The car could be in the shop for months waiting on the repair, so then what do they do? Rental cars fees for a month or more is expensive. Also, do they then sell the new car after 5 years or suck up the repair after that? Buying a new car should be a reliable car that you keep for 10 years plus.
@@kensmith2796 as long as the CVT fluid is drained and refilled every 30 thousand miles, it should last over 10 years
Just paid $6,500 for this 2012 Accord with 64k miles. Drives silky smooth. Bought it to keep miles off my 2018 Tundra.
I love your beater videos! Don’t borrow money!
That sounds like a deal to me! 2012 accord is probably bulletproof too.
Thank you man 🙏🏼. If they keep performing well, maybe I’ll buy another beater for fun 🤩
How in the world did you find a 2012 accord with 64k for $6500? All I’m finding is 2009-10 with 130,000 miles for like $8k to $9K
@@Hellcat71782 man where i’m at there’s 06 accords with 200k+ and everyone wants 4500+. it’s ridiculous
@@waytoocozy ya it’s ridiculous. I mean as you see I own a bunch of expensive cars but people who need a work car are spending $8K on junk high mileage cars. I don’t think he’s telling the truth anyway
my friend got one engine blew at 110k miles
I have a 07' Nissan Altima bought new July 2007. Have 120,000 miles on it and still running. You can buy new, but keep it until the wheels fall off.
That's what my co-worker did. Bought his 2005 Nissan Altima brand new and ran it to 335,000 and then junked it.
Not even 200k on your Toyota. Amazing. God willing, you have a reliable car for years to come. Good luck with your car. I have a 2016 Camry. Brought it certified preowned with only 32k miles on it back in 2018. It now has 108k. The payment part was a hassle & it may be the last time I get a car note but with that being said, it is paid off & it’s hands down the best car I have ever owned. Running this bad boy till it dies
Smart however my advice...Do as I did...when you are working. WARNING DISCIPLINE NEEDED HERE: Plan on putting aside the $300 to $500 a month (insert your $) and save it for 4 to 5 years. Then you walk into the dealership and walk out with your car. With no LOAN. I did this in Oct 22' for my 22 Civic Si. But yes my 07' Si Sdn I bought new April 07' is still my daily work commuter with 290.5K. The 22' Si gets lonely in the garage a lot. 😀
Very smart 🤝🏼
Or buy a new car and keep it for 15 years. Then do the same thing and you only need to save $200-300 a month.
@@circletech7745 pretty much what I did if you amortize the number of years I have had the 07' Si. Since April 2007 new.
If you're cheap buy a new used car, one with 30-40k miles.
@@woa6227ONLY if you know the maintenance history or can get a good pre-purchase inspection....You'd be surprised that a lot of cars are neglected BASIC but critical maintenance such as regular oil changes.
I drive a 98 Camry with 412,000 miles. Paint it myself do all the maintenance. The car cost me $1500 and I’ve been driving it for three years. this car is bulletproof !! I am friends with the previous owner and it has never let either one of us down .This allows me to put more in the stock market than what I paid for the car every month. Making payments on a depreciating asset Will keep you from getting ahead.
Wow!! Amazing!
Good point!!
Coming From Another Fellow Connectican It Is Expensive As Shit To Live Out Here, My Car Literally Got Totaled In My Job Parking Lot And I Been Tryna Find A Car Every Since
I want a 2012 Rav4 and seen multiple videos suggesting these cars have horrible transmissions but after seeing your video I gained the confidence back to buy one 🙏🏾 Wish You The Best Of Luck On Your New Purchase 🔥
you got one hell out of deal. toyotas drive forever. my perfect beater i have is a 2011 yaris hatchback with 5 speed manual. it’s so fun. also dont have to worry about it being stolen or hit with a shopping cart.
Right place at the right time .. team Toyota 🤛🏼 that’s what I like about it. I park it wherever, whenever and don’t care if I have little dents
Yes, young people don't know how to shift a manual transmission :-)
Family had my vw golf from new - I bought it in 2018 with 25000 miles. Now 12 years old and only done 66k miles. In really good condition and fully serviced. Thanks Sue 😊
My moms got a Camry 09 with over 230k miles. Doing the head gasket because coolant bubbles 🫧 from exhaust gases. Head, block and gasket look great everything for its age and miles looks amazing. I’m curtain it will go another 100k+ no problem. I want to buy it off her eventually and get her a newer car.
I got an E-bike to ride to work for $700. I hardly even drive anymore, I have an E46 M3 that I'll drive on the weekends sometimes, saving $60 a week on gas feels great. You don't even need a beater car these days if you'r job is less than 20 miles away
The concept works best if you buy the right car and/or have mechanical ability, and that requires sophistication.
I don't own any beaters, but my daily is a 2007 Camry I got from my best friend's late grandfather who barely drove it. It's getting a full makeover when my son gets out of college in June, but as is, the car has been awesome and it saves wear and tear on my other vehicles that are paid off, but aren't as fuel efficient.
New cars are great, but living life and investing can be even better.
I love this channel...!
Nice to see you did a Part 2. This is very practical information. Although I have a car note, I admire people like yourself who opt for the less-popular approach to owning a vehicle. Wish you well on your wealth building journey.
I drive an 04 Sentra that I bought brand new, soon to be of drinking age...best trouble free car I`ve ever owned, besides maintenance which I do regularly nothing has gone wrong, amazingly
Hey, some wheels are better than none. Good stuff. I'd just keep fluids clean and do simple stuff
I have a used 2009 Honda Accord 2.4L that I got last year with roughly 142k miles and now its at 149k. It's served me well thus far and hopefully for many more years to come!
The commenter saying you only drive "one car" doesn't realize that because beaters are CHEAP you can own MULTIPLE vehicles easily.
A beater truck, sporty car, SUV, etc. Perfect example is OP with an older cheap Civic Si and now a Rav4.
The people that only have and drive ONE expensive fancy car must get boring over time.
yup, I have turbo diesel station wagon for the family, s55 amg to play around in, truck to haul shit, jetta tdi for the wife to commute to work, land cruiser with some big tires to fool around it, its nice.
You got it. Variety is the Spice of life
Very true. I like trying different flavor ice cream!🎉
hahaha
but insurance costs.
Paid 3k for 05 GMC canyon back in 2019... Still rocking it, I own rentals and its been a god sent truck.
No issues, and its a work horse. I do my own mechanical work.
That comment that dude left he is clearly young people don’t realize how nice it is saving money by buying a beater esp in the state of the current economy
You can have both. I’m 33 you see my cars. I have a $850,000 home paid off all my cars are paid off. You guys are just bad with money. About $400,000 in savings.
@@Hellcat71782 that’s good for you I’m not 33 bro and just getting into my career I’m actually extremely well with money which is why I don’t buy new vehicles and the next new vehicle I’m going to buy out right with cash and I want to make sure I have more than enough in the bank first but I personally love driving older vehicles more bc I enjoy working on them fixing them and it’s feels more accomplished racking up the mileage on an old car and taking it all over the North America continent
@@Hellcat71782 it’s called having different priorities than you and majority of people living right now aren’t as privileged as you
I drive a 2011 Nissan Sentra with 131K miles. I’ve owned it since 2013. It looks and runs like new. I’ve only done routine maintenance (oil, tires, batteries, brakes). It’s been a great car.
Used Honda Accord ex coupe with 345,000 miles
I bought both of my cars new: a civic in 2017 and my tesla in 2023. I like driving a new car and knowing everything that happened to it. My honda sits at 117k miles and still works great, with regular maintenance. It paid for itself many times
Oh, I’m about to make $410k this year and I still cannot convince myself that I can afford a true luxury car, like a BMW or a Mercedes. You can’t beat buying a new reliable car and holding on to it as long as possible
Hello there. This is my first time seeing any of your video post. it just showed up randomly. I must say I completely agree. I drive three old vehicles, 2006 Toyota Sequoia, 2013 Honda Civic and 2004 Pontiac Bonneville. I did purchase 6 months ago a brand new 2024 Toyota Camry SE gas no hybrid engine, after driving it and only putting 5,000 miles I sold it. did not loose money I made 1,500 profit. the main reason sold 2024 Camry is the cost of Insurance, that one car cost me $949.000 for 6 months, sorry I can't justify me paying almost $2000 a year for one car vs $2,392 per years on the three older cars. For now I'm please satisfy driving my old cars until I decide to pull the trigger on brand new vehicle. my 2006 Toyota Sequoia has 228k miles, 2013 Honda Civic has 71,000 miles and 04 bonneville just hit 100k miles.
Got very lucky with my car. My dad's friend from work was selling his 2007 Toyota Highlander with everything done with it at 111,083 miles, but was sitting around for two winters. Finally he sold it to me this past summer and we got the car for $1,300 and could not be happier. We changed the oil and I put a new head unit, since I at least wanted Apple CarPlay, and it was a learning experience and good way to start my financial journey. Although sometime in the near future I would like to get me a manual car.
people should be grateful to have any car that they have no matter the year. As long as it drives well and is pretty reliable, you should be fine.
Driving my Opel Corsa D 2007 i bought 2017 still today. I Love IT. First Car. Greetings FROM Germany
Driving a 2017 toyota auris (corolla) hybrid. 83000km and feels like a brand new car. Everything is sooo easy to access, basic maintenance is a dream on this car. Congratulations for your RAV4! Hope you’ll enjoy the space and reliability
That’s like my rav. I pop the hood and everything is right there. Thanks, hopefully she runs for a long time and I’m excited to see how she does in the winter time 😎
I bought my 2008 Accord EXL V6 new. Still driving it. The comment from one of your viewers about “bussin ya ass, only to drive one car for 20-30 yrs” is something that’s been on my mind lately though. I might pull the trigger in 2-3 years and upgrade. These newer cars with the tablets, google maps, all the safety features, self driving…. And they have “modes” like sport & comfort. Yeah I would like to drive something modern. My car is becoming a relic.
I hate complicated cars. So old cars is better for me
In 44 years of car ownership, we've purchased 12 cars between the two of us. Our first two were beaters, without a doubt! Midwestern owned, mid 70s cars were pretty long in the tooth by 1980!
Of our 12, 7 have been new (2 had 0% loans and one purchased with cash), 5 used (3 purchased with cash). We generally keep them a long time (except one that was traded in after only 13 months). Our current two are 10 and 20 years old.
We attended the 2024 Chicago Auto Show and didn't really find anything that excited us and we've gone out and test driven cars once. Nothing gave me new car fever and I hated both the screen-centric nature of new cars and was taken aback by prices!
I think we're good for the time being, especially since neither car has excessive miles on it.
I have a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6. Best daily I've ever owned. Currently the car just hit 175k miles and I have no complaints. I have another car but I only drive that on weekends and warmer months the Camry I put that to work. It's dinged up but I don't worry about anyone parking next to me or cleaning the car up as it's just my a to b car which is why I went with Toyota because it just makes more sense in a financial standpoint. I will get a newer car sometime next year only to treat myself, but definitely keeping my Camry. Best daily I ever had.
2004 Honda Pilot with 272k miles owned since 2011.
A car for some people is just transportation. That's totally cool. For some people a car is an extension of their personality. They enjoy driving, the feel, the fun. Nothing wrong with either perspective. Motor on!
Agreed. Like my rav is just for driving, but my si was more for enjoying the drive & fun! At the end of the day, they both get me where i need or needed to be
2007 FA5 Civic Si baby! Only 105k on it. Fun to drive and reliable, that's all I need, and that's why I watch. =)
fa5 ftw! That thing is a baby. Appreciate you
I have a "cheap" 13' Elantra GT I brought off of FB marketplace for $6.2K in 2021. From 78K miles to now 160K miles and it is still reliable. Easy to maintain and insurance and taxes are cheap. I have a '15 Genesis Coupe and that is my fun car.
Sounds like a reliable vehicle to me.. Genesis is a dope ride
Stress over car payments versus stress over having a serious problem on the road… that’s the trade off. Every beater is a gamble. I’ve run cars for 10-20 years and leaned on Chilton, and if it was my car at least I know what’s gone into it. I learned a lot about mechanics, but at this point I just want something that drives without being worried over surprises - all of which tend to happen when I’m short on time and the weather makes it hard to work on my car.
Nice car man. I wouldn't say you have a beater car. But anyways, I always say this, your car is the only thing that if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Everybody can leave you, but your car will never leave you. It's loyal to you. It will give you a shelter. If you respect it, it will give you the same respect. I love my car 😊😊😊
That is true. It is not like a women lol. I do love my Rav!
I Bought a Used 2018 Hyundai elantra in 2020! Got a good Deal 👍 Still Runs and still paying it off💯💯💯

A Toyota can’t go wrong
I have a Camry 2010 nothing special but reliable.
I am the third owner of a 2001 Camry with 110,000 miles, well looked after. I bought it 18 months ago and expect to drive it many years to come. New cars suck 😅
That thing has ALOT of life left 😎

1999-2002 Camrys have that bulletproof engine!
I own and drive a 2008 Toyota Camry 4-cylinder. I was able to get the engine overhauled in mid 2020 because I bought the car from a Honda dealership. Only had to pay $100 deductible for it all. I’ve had to just do regular maintenance, and some wear & tear parts. Just drove and 8.5 hour round trip(so almost 20 with driving in the city of Norfolk and VA beach) area to Norfolk, Virginia in my ‘08, to and back, and had no issues. Only thing I gotta get fixed now is my “transmission fluid temperature sensor replaced, and a check engine light came on to warn me about it, and the car still made it back home no problem.
Beater cars which I don’t even like that word cause it’s like a belittling thing for our older rides, shoot our older rides are better quality than these newer cars.
I paid $4500 for my 2006 with 118,000 miles 6 years ago. Now it is pushing 160,000. No problems with it, just routine maintenance. Looks good too.😀
I've been driving an old car for a decade now. I keep a record of the maintenance costs in an Excel sheet. But even without Excel you can calculate your total cost for the vehicle (purchase price + maintenance and repairs) and divide by the numbers of months you have owned and/or miles you have put on it to keep track of how much it costs you per mile and per month. It's a good incentive to keep driving a beater or let you know if you're spending too much on it and should just buy new.
I am a used car guy for sure. I have a 2013 Acura ILX. Had it for about 6 years. I am in Canada and it currently has 120,000 KM or about 75,000 miles. I work at home and live in a city, so don't need to drive much. It has been hit in parking lots three times. I have enough money to go buy a new car outright, but if these things happened to a new car it would drive me nuts. All I have done to it is put a new rad in and front pads and rotors.
2007 camry 2.4l. About to hit 200,000 on it. Only needs a upper cat right now. Drives like a dream still.
Run ittt 🤛🏼
I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid with 178,000 miles! I LOVE this car! I had a o2 sensor, rear brake pads, TPMS sensor, spark plugs, and new tires done to it. This girl runs and drives like new! I love it! I also have a 2019 Camry XSE that is also paid off. But I do not like how it drives and feels like the 2007. So, I am looking at selling it or trading it very soon. I am looking at a 2012 or 2013 Highlander. Both are one owner with a very good service record on both. They are worth of course less than the Camry. But I am ok with that! More cash in the bank if I do end up trading it. We can get bad winters where I live and having something that is AWD or 4WD would be smart! I love older cars that don't have all the bells and whistles. The 2007 does not have a backup camera either and does not bother me one bit!
got a 2011 Toyota rav 4 v6 170k and runs amazing
I bought a 2007 rav4 v6 last year. It is very fast, it has 142k miles on it. I just came back from a 10 hour drive from north Texas back to Houston last month. I installed a $120 Walmart stereo and a back up camera in it. The v6 was made from 2006 to 2012. Everyone should at least test drive one on the highway 60 to 90 mph is crazy.
I’ve heard the v6 is a beast. I know My 2.4 is slower than a Prius lol. You’re making me want to test drive one even though it’s just a rav 🤙🏼
I was actually looking at a RAV4, I think it was the same year. Looked OK in pictures. Get there and it’s just clapped out. It was also in a collision. Take it on a test drive and it sounds and feels like it’s going to fall apart. They wanted little over 3k. Walked away. Found an 05’ Xterra with 196k. Guy wanted 4k for it, it looked better in pics than it did in person. Walked around it, drove it. It was solid. I was aware of all the issues they have, and I did some preventative maintenance. I’ve done the whole front end, valve covers, and cats. Now has 209k. So far so good. I got it for $3,600.
Glad you walked away from that lemon haha.. Not all used are good as you found out... Glad you found another decent vehicle though!

Heck yeah! When I boosted my FG2 in 2016, I ended up buying an FA1 for a daily. Had around 170,000 miles on it from OG owner. It’s now sitting just shy of 400,000 miles! My beater with a heater! 😂😎

My '98 Sienna has been 'protesting' the lack of tpms units on it! Have a 2010 Prius. Works and drives great. I guess it was used though I never actually bought it because it was gifted to me from a family member but it only had 33K miles on it and now I have 94K miles on it.
I have a new 2024 Camry le awd paid cash. And a paid off 2021 Mercedes glb. Plan to keep them for a long time. One for pleasure and weekend trips and one reliable daily.
I pay myself the money back instead of a payment with interest to the bank.
I have 03 Xrs Toyota Matrix with 276K and it runs like a champ! But going into it i was prepared to do the small stuff...things that are easy to fix and cheap to get, even at the junk yard. Having said that, I got it painted, and I had the clutch done, so that added $3000 which is what i paid for the car. $6500 starts every day and no car payment. And YES, you should have $3-5K in the back just in case.
Great purchase and great stuff with the maintenance. Perhaps treat the rust to slow it down, and freshen up the lower rocker Panel area.
Thanks for the tips
I have like 8 cars/trucks they all have a purpose, and I got them all for cheap and fixed them, also if the one I am dailying breaks down, I can just drive another until I get around to fixing it, I keep them all on regular maintenance schedules, its not bad.

Very well put. Sorry for the loss on the newer ones
I brought the same year and color in 2020. It had 164k on it. It now had 196k miles and going. Toyota and Honda all day 💪🏿
You nailed it! I will always own both or at least either or. Both vehicles are as solid as it gets

I live in Florida so I don't have to worry about rust do you have any opinions?
With many people, driving a newer or flashy vehicle is a status symbol. I see it a lot in younger people, many of whom are trading in every 3-f5 yrs for newer ones. I never regret driving my 2011 Honda Fit Sport, especially when I park it in a crowded lot.
the first generation Fit Sport looked so cool , would love one of those with a 5 speed manual as a daily...great MPG
Bandmates take the rear seats out & can fit an entire drum set & amps in the back
@@StevenJeffrey-h2g Great vehicle, 114,000 miles, currently getting 40-42 mpg. No problems until recently when I noticed a rattle when starting up on cold days. Could be a VTC actuator needing replaced. I was going to trade it in on a new Honda HRV, but then discovered they’re using CVT trannies. No way!
I've always wanted to buy a fit and swap a tsx engine in it lol
I have a 2006 toyota rav4, parents owned it since 2006 and it is sitting at around 140k miles. It is a really reliable car! The engine does tend to burn oil. Other than that, very easy to repair the engine. You can probably replace everything with a blindfold on.
The 06-08 were notorious for that, but just keep her topped off… I love the simplicity of the engine makes everything “fun” to work on 😎
@@TheGerbsteve Exactly! These 1AZ engines are super easy to work on :)
@@TheGerbsteve only the 4 bangers have the oil burning problem. And yes my 6 cylinder is harder to work on, the 3 rear plugs.
1:08 I'm addicted to sub-$3k daily cars. 90% end up being good ones for me. Also, I got a custom UEL header for that 2AZ engine, by Inferno Fabrication. Makes the 2AZ rumble like a Subaru. My 2AZ car got totaled before I had a chance to install the header tho. Let me know if you want it for the RAV4, I'll take a small loss on that header.
For those of us who can do most of the maintenance on our vehicles of course it makes sense to get a beater. For people who aren't mechanically inclined imo it makes a lot of sense to me why they shouldn't buy a beater. So all of you on here criticizing people for buying new you need to understand where they're coming from. Most drivers don't know how to fix their own sh---t. If i were in their shoes i would do the same thing. Of course some will say "well it's still a lot cheaper to get it fixed up." Yeah but it's extremely frustrating if your vehicle is always broke down or being worked on. That's why a lot of people buy new. They don't want to have to deal with that crap and i agree with them.
I don't know about US but in Finland cold climate Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki from my knowledge are great and cheap to fix and maintain. But please don't influence too many people, so we frugal ones have also beaters in the future :D
We have 4 seasons here where I am and it gets down to zero, very rarely negatives. I’ll stick with Honda and yota for life! I will try not too haha
Sold my 06' CRV to my bro with 250k miles, still runs great. Looking into another daily to keep miles off my truck. Looking for an RSX or TSX to daily but also a low mileage GTO 😂
That thing was a gem, probably would've made it to 1 million miles haha. Go tsx, they look amazing. I'm waiting to start a new job soon, so I can start stacking cash again, finish my si and probs buy another car to add to my little fleet ;)
I had a 02 civic si (ep3) I bought it with 144,000 on it for 5k and drove it till 273,000 and sold it still running just fine
I have a 13 kia rio. (Had since new), been good to me 154k miles. Also have 06 rav4, and 11 Ford Edge Limited. i paid $5000 last year. I use the Edge for my "luxury" weekend only Had 162k miles. I love the luxuries the Edge has. Like leather, panoramic sunroof, nice stereo. And a 1984 mercury marquis
VARIETY is the spice of life!! Why not have 4 DIFFERENT cars for less than half the price of ONE new car.
06 rav, lets goooo! I wouldn't mind owning 4 different vehicles, especially used. I want to add a luxury car to the fleet one day.
The best part about my van is never had a payment and low insurance costs. Helped me become job optional early.
Vanlife? Nice, what kind of van?
@@TheGerbsteve oh nope. Regular house, but my '03 Windstar only costed $1800 in 2017. I still have ir for errands and family trips and it runs great.
**New vid: How long will I drive used, beater cars for? **
ua-cam.com/video/WsCRTurZyuY/v-deo.html
When I was younger I figured out - I Would Rather Drive a Beater and Have Money to Do Something, Than Spend All My Money on New Car Payments and Insurance, and Can’t Do Anything.
I currently have a 99 Toyota, a 97 Chevy an a 2010 Dodge. I have owned new cars in the past, but only at times that I could easily afford them. I could get a new car now, but I am retired and don’t drive as much, and these vehicles are very reliable.
Always have had beaters.
Now i have a 2005 Renault cc and a 2007 lexus rx 400h. Before the lexus i had a 2001 Jeep grand cherokee v8 for two years. 2018 i bought a 2005 Subaru Legacy. In 2014 a 2005 MB clk200 (horrible expencive repair-costs. In 2010 a 1999 clk 200 (grate car But rusty). And 1998 Galant, 1993 Galant, 1998 mazda 626 (disaster sold fast) 1983 Granada, 1978 Granada, 1985 Lada, 1984 Volvo 360, 1980 Lada, 1972 Renault 12. 1974 Consul estate, 1973 Consul coupe. Always 9-19 years old.
In 2022 I traded my 2014 taco for 2017 Toyota Corolla SE. fast forward to 2024 car is paid off. The pay off date was for 2028. At the moment I purchased another used Toyota van from a family. 8400 paid in full. The van is 10 years old I will try to get to another 10 out of it. In my opinion post pandemic new cars across the board are coming out with problems. Their quality has somewhat suffered. Yes this includes the mighty Toyota. I feel like I got a good deal. I am hold on till I need a car again.
"should be able to afford a new car with 6 figures" WELLL... I frequently see people make a lot of assessments of someone's purchasing power based on income alone, but people's expenses vary wildly. If you've got a very expensive home, if you've got kids, if you've got a ***load of debt, student loans, if you live in a costly part of the country... these days six figures is no guarantee you're on easy street! And some people might just prefer to save or to use the money for other luxuries. I make six fig but I'm trying like heck to get out of a LOT of debt, so despite my income, I'm 100% sticking with the beater life!
I have that same car. 06 RAV4
@@fueledbymusic3 let’s gooo 🤛🏼
I got 2009 Toyota Corolla, best investment, it got some punch and it just needs regular maintenance, i just hit 100k miles.
seeing more Honda kei trucks on the road, would be a good daily/tradesman ride, 35+ MPG & can fit a ton of stuff in the back
Those are the little 3 cylinder trucks with the little tires/bed, right?
@@TheGerbsteve yep & the sides of the bed can go completely flat to fit wide things, I saw one with a lever that will push the bed back like a dump truck, very handy little 'utes
I have a Beater 2000 Subaru Outback with 214,760 miles on it. I took it too my mechanic to get work done to it. 5 Speed manual. Car runs good, dont care what it looks like or sounds like at all. Just want it to last me for five years with no problems. Oil consumption is the only thing that bothers me. Oil is cheap and engines are not
Good ole subi. Run it until the wheels fall off and keep the oil topped off
Rav 4 is a solid car you should look into Subarus I have an evo and a subie and they are great AWD vehicles you can get a NA car less problems but I’m obsessed with boost and stick shift car it’s part of why I love driving fwd sucks
I have a 2008 Honda Civic coupe with 213k miles on it. I haven't had a car payment for over 8 years!
Love this! One less thing to worry about 👍🏼
Just make sure you check oil if it is 2azfe engine, they had excessive oil consumption issue and recall/overhaul pistons on some of those cars.
Believe me, I do. Usually multiple times per week. It had the oil consumption test fixed by toyota @130k, so I think I got lucky. They replaced head gasket, new rings, etc
look like there's a red tape residue near the filler cap on the cover that they used for the oil consumption test, so it must have been done at one point
I love a new one but hate the payments!😅
My wife drives new (2020 Mazda CX-5) and I drive used (2011 Mazda CX-9) - Ten years ago, she had a new 2010 CX-9 and I had a used 2005 MINI Cooper - and twenty years ago, she had the new 2003 Honda Pilot and I had a used 1994 Acura Integra - thirty years ago, she had the new 1994 Taurus and I had a 1985 Fiero (the only new car I ever bought for myself before meeting my wife - who then had a new 1987 Honda CRX 👍)... the kids always had beaters (usually used Hyundai Elantra/Sonatas that they destroyed). My adult son currently needs the CX-9, so I'm shopping for a beater (a 2nd/3rd gen Mazda3 or 2nd gen Acura TSX?)...
I own 5 cars and one motorcycle for a family of 4. Paid less than $45k for all of them. Have a Tundra, Porsche, Infiniti, CRV and a Wrangler. All except the Porsche have just liability insurance and I maintain them all. I’ve never had a car payment in my life because have better things to spend my money on. Understand if you go down this road and have this many vehicles you will be doing maintenance on at least one of them probably a couple times a week.
09 Pontiac g6, bought it new 125k miles, it got my son back and forth to college, now it's mine again. Needs a new crankshaft seal leaking oil a little. Love no payments, and it's a classic, they don't make Pontiacs anymore
I haven't seen one of those in such a long time lol. Keep her going
Hey bro were gonna have to go for a cruise when you get midnight 2 up and running
I just bought honda element last year for $3.5k cash. I knew it's going to alot of work slowly but i don't mind. Lol
It's better to drive a paid off car compare you have a car mortgage. Imo😊
I feel bad on your honda SI but you deserved the rav. You can go anywhere on that car like outdoor stuff😊 kudos to all driving beaters car. Let's make our financial stable🙏🏼
As long as you didn't mind haha. I'm all about keeping my monthly bills pretty low, so I can get ahead in many other areas of my life. I miss the si, but love the rav! Thank god that I have another Si though that I'm rebuilding. That's why I love the rav, if i want to check out a back road, no problem, snow? shouldn't be a problem. Let's get to the best financial state we can
The problem is that a lot of people dont want to be seen rolling around in a $5k car that is like 10-15 years old. They want something to impress their friends and strangers.
Agreed.. I can relate. My younger self would get embarrassed pulling up to school in my old, 95 cutlass or beat up civic that I drove when that crapped out haha. My mindset has changed much since then
@@TheGerbsteve Haha I had a 96 olds Ciera as my first car I would love to have that thing back now lol
Just a word of caution - be careful about low tire pressure. My tire separated from the wheel on the highway, and I spun out in the middle of traffic. Lucky to be alive honestly, and I was only going 70mph.
I have a 2000 Toyota Solara with 350K, running fine
Car is a champ! That’s a lot of miles
Looks like a decent deal ! Hopefully it doesn’t burn a lot of oil ? My go to beaters with good heaters.. are Subaru ‘s. Have 3 09-10 Foresters and a 05 outback.. all are limited edition except one forester. All were 2,500$ Canadian or less.. and not all rusted out.. I’m picky with the beaters I buy 😂. Not rusty but a small oil leak from the head gaskets a drip here and there.. I don’t care.. 2 of them had the gaskets done. I might need to buy a Rav 4 now for fun .
It actually had recall done @130k for oil consumption.. I love subaru's. I like the forester xt or w.e the turbo one is that hauls. Dude, I totally recommend a rav! Roof rack bars, 4wd when needed, plenty of room, good gas. Win, win in my eyes
@@TheGerbsteve sounds like a score with the recall done.. for the pistons. I find it hard to get a deal on any Toyota.. I drive my 03 Cartier Town Car in the summer.. it has 134k miles ! Got it with less than 100k miles paid 1,500$ Canadian.. not rusty always parked for winters.. was a Florida runner from Ontario .
- everything I own is late 1980’s - mid 1990s…mechanically inclined- im an old man - they where new when I bought them. now 300K - 400K miles… Honda/ Toyota 👍
@@dexburwell Honda & Toyota ftw 🤛🏼
Average car payments are reaching $400-$500 per month atm. A new car loses 70% of its value in the first 4 years, so thats $21,000 loss for a $30,000 new car. I guess the question is, can you afford to take that hit on a depreciating asset. Then add payments and on top of that the interest.
_I love BEATERS, bro have you tried the boiling water water trick for dented bumpers, I think there's a few vids on YT_
@@thatguyben3128 likewise! I haven’t..
Think about getting undercoated if you live in rust belt. Even if it has some rust, it is necessary for older car, the rust sneaks up and ruins them. It might cost like 150-200 dollars to get it done yearly.
I should definitely look into that! Any shop recommendations?
@TheGerbsteve well I live in western ny state. I could give you a recommendation if you're somewhere in ny maybe.
I dont care for ziebart, you want fluid film, and they can put cinnamon in it or peppermint to deter mice and make it smell better.
@TheGerbsteve there are a lot of independent shops that do it. Just ask or ask who they recommend if they reputable.
I got a 2018 mazda3 paid off. just hit 40k kms. Not getting another car for a long time!. New cars are too expensive and the interest to lease/finance is way to high. Keep your vehicle in good order, change the oil regularly, rust proof it for the winters. You want it to last for yrs and have no car payments.
