Very interesting conversation. I consider myself a black person, as I identify with my Jamaican father who raised me. But there is Dutch and Portuguese on my Guyanese mother's side. Race is definitely a socio-cultural construct, as genetics only go so far, and how you identify is a very personal thing.

If you're predominantly black, then I suppose it makes more sense to identify as black. And I agree that culture plays a part as well as biological heritage. Thanks for you comment.

@@mxduk Skin colour is a spectrum and 'black or white' is a binary. These binary groupings are disturbing because they symbolise being 'in' or 'out' and that is tribalism. Society's groups are much more subtle. I would hate to defend someone as a 'white woman' because that is what we have in common. I read recently that 'a racist is someone who believes in the concept of race'. Let that one sink in.
