I'm impressed by how concisely but still thoroughly you've presented each feature. This is well-organized and contains only what I wanted to know. Thank you!
Thank you Ollie! This is very helpful. Had Deluge for 3 months and havent ventured too much into the arranger while I familiarised myself with everything else, cant wait to get into this.
There is some very valuable information here. I’ve been using song view for writing and performance and there’s definitely some features i need to be taking advantage of. First, I’ve been trying to figure out how to sample different chords/notes of the same instrument/sample and sequence/play them in one clip, not multiple clips. Kit is the answer! Just load different chops into different parts in a kit and sequence from there! Genius! Second, I’ve struggled to memorize the clips i want to trigger all at once, really quickly, and sometimes i forget to unmute one of the 3 or 4 clips i want to play at the same time. Grouping is the answer! This will take a huge load off my mind during a performance. Third; in one instance, my song had a 32 bar clip playing before a 4 bar clip, and I armed the 4 bar clip but just waited for it to play, not knowing the exact point it was going to play. In arranger view, I can choose exactly what time the shorter clip will play. So much more predictability there. Thank you so much for this! Learning Deluge has been a struggle, but these tips will allow me to take full advantage of my performances:
@11:30 you're mistaken here. You can actually send white clips to the song view. once you've entered notes within the white clip (instance) you hold the first white pad and hit the song button. it then sends it to song view.
Great vid! One thing tho, when you create a white clip in arranger view, and you actually like it, you don't have to recreate it from scratch. Press and hold a pad of the white clip while in arranger view and clic "song" button. It will export the white clip as a clip in a new row into song mode!
@@OllieLoops thank YOU ! I got my Deluge three days ago and have been watching hours of your tutorials as well as others while waiting for my unit to be shipped. Three days in, what a wonderful box... Exploring new musical territories without having to plug a hundred things to Reaper on my computer. I'm in love with it!
Excellent video. Thorough and succint. One thing i thought you'd mention is that a white clip can be converted to a new colored clip for reuse. Hold the tail of the white clip in arranger view and press the song button. The white clip is now a reusable coloured clip
This is a great tutorial, I've had my deluge for nearly a year and not used the arranger mode yet. I decided I'm going to have a go tonight and this was the first arranger mode video I found. Really good job putting so much information across so clearly. Too many tutorials turn into demo's!
@@OllieLoops I had lots of fun thanks, the arranger mode is really powerful and intuitive just like everything else on that machine, took about 5 minutes to get the hang of it.
Wow, i have seen many good tutorials, but this is the one that i got the most out of. You may be the one to get me out of the one bar trap. Thank you! :)
Just got my Deluge and this is pure gold. The loop recording function might also be worth mentioning at this point to quickly get clip variations for your arrangement. I guess that's worth a separate video by itself. :)
Hi, Got clip and song concepts fine as well as so far, the arranger mode. Unfortunately, the arranger mode has been doing something I can't get around whatever. Each time I lay a Clip into arranger mode, it lights up White. No sound whatever as I press play. May you help? Cheersɓ
Eight months later -- OH! I get it now! It was a very steep learning curve (for me) that required me mimicking your moves and button presses one-for-one (after taking a few other courses first to get some Deluge basics under my belt -- ones that you went over in the beginning; but I could only understand the terms and what was happening after I got a few other's education on those subjects). With that said, thank you for helping me put it all together as I can now navigate in and out of the Arranger with ease -- and it does what I expect it to do. That wasn't the case 6-8 months ago. (The problem was that I was creating "white" ones and couldn't understand why . . . it was a brick wall that was getting in my way . . . I'll add that this confusion was reinforced by the manual's instructions).
Wow. I’m glad that you were able to figure it out. It’s not easy to understand, I admit. But I’m happy that you found the video helpful. Enjoy your Deluge!
Thanks. I just got mine a few days ago and have been learning it but the arranger view was a little confusing. This thing is the most fun ive had making music in a while!
I am a Japanese and Deluge user. I'm not good at English, so I watch videos using YoutTube's auto-translated subtitles. If possible, I want you to turn on the subtitles feature in your video.
Thanks, this is helpful. I've been considering a Deluge or MPC to replace a Digitakt, and this gives me more info about how that might go. Hoping to work in a manner which is horizontal first (time) then vertical (adding tracks), with much of the actual sound design happening toward the end after the notes have been arranged. For now, I'm basically using a Digitakt for drums and to control a bunch of synths, as shown in my video called "Easy Does It". It works, but it has some pretty awkward drawbacks. It's all based around 64-step 4-bar patterns, which I find are never long enough so I need several patterns per phrase and several banks of patterns per song. It also ignores CC data from external controllers entirely, and even when sequencing CC with its onboard encoders it can only do one value per 16th-note step. Then when I'm nearing the end of a project and want to tweak things for mixing purposes, I have to apply those changes individually to every pattern in the song... which adds hours to the process. And it uses proprietary protocols so I can't even back up my data or load samples. I'd like to work on a timeline instead, which makes the Deluge appealing. I hear it also handles CC data much better, and makes it pretty easy to do triplet notes, which I use a lot but are exceptionally awkward on a Digitakt. Also, it seems like it could facilitate rendering midi tracks as audio and then arranging those on the timeline, allowing me to multitrack a monosynth and reduce the amount of gear needed. It could even allow reverb tails and such, since clips don't have to align to pattern boundaries. I'm concerned about its UI though, and the difficulty of remembering what each clip is when I have a large number of them. The MPC seems generally more mature and more user-friendly in most ways. Its automatic multisampling also seems really nice, for tracks which don't involve rely on turning knobs for expression. The main drawback is that it has no timeline mode... it's still pattern-based like the Digitakt (but with much longer patterns). Also, it's a bit heavy on menuing. Anyway, apologies for the long comment... mostly just wanted to say thanks, and then got lost thinking out loud.
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad I could offer a place to hear your thoughts and your decision making process. You seem to have a good sense for what you want and how the machines may or may not fit into your workflow. Here's my thoughts. Both the Deluge and MPC series offer advanced features which you would likely appreciate. In terms of UI, each has it's pros and cons. The Deluge requires much memorization and regular use to ingrain what you learn. The MPC can have an easier learning curve and the touchscreen is a tremendous aid in workflow. The Deluge is a more of a standalone device with better synthesis capabilities. Although they both have decent sound design options, I think the MPC pulls ahead in terms of features and how much you can manipulate sound. But when it comes down to the capabilities of their sequencers, I think that the Deluge's Arranger view can give you greater flexibility in your arrangement. The MPC is still powerful, but its limited due to being pattern based whereas the Deluge is more akin to a DAW. Also, I haven't fully tested this yet, but I believe the Deluge has better midi implementation in terms of controlling external gear. It's not an easy decision because they are both special devices. But its ultimately up to you and how you expect them to fit into your workflow. I would recommend checking out each devices manual to gain insight into how each one could fit into your workflow. Good luck and let me know what you decide.
Even on 0.75 play rate, the texts just fly by. I'm not sure if I'm impressed by the density of information or just plain annoyed by it. No need to write text if you're going to show it for only one tenth of a second.

@@OllieLoops I'm really enjoying it! It really has got a lot going for it - I find it intuitive to use, and the sequencer grid scroll and zoom is fantastic (not to mention the brilliance of how copy and paste has been implemented!) I wish the effects section was a little better (but I do quite like the reverb!) - although the effects are totally usable, I think the delay and distortion could be the most improved (and I'm kind of missing an on board compressor... although that's not really essential I guess!). But hey, that's just nit-picking - it's pretty damn amazing, and currently my favourite bit of kit!
Thanks for the vid. Something I've noticed is that the arranger will not (seemingly) take probability information from kits or synths into the arranger. And you cannot perform 'mutes' within clips - ie muting and unmuting elements of a kit, it seems to just capture a single mute snapshot. Currently my workaround for this is to record long phrases say for a kit, change this long phrase into a white instance and to then manually reprogram these longer phrases to have probability and variations in mutes within a kit. This gets kinda problematic when you're relying on clip colours to get an idea of where you are in a song, so I create blank kits that I use just to use a song clip colour marker --- ie I have a 16 bar blue phrase and I can see the 4 bar yellow phrase is coming up. Sorry about the wordiness...reading about programming is like watching paint crack
Interesting. I would suggest contacting Synthstrom directly with this comment. I think it could be either a bug or a suggestion for an improvement. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
@@OllieLoops thanks ollie...can you confirm this behaviour? Are you able to chuck a whole bunch of variation on a clip and record this into the arranger? I have already build 10 minutes in one project but I noticed that the CPU starts to have problems with such a big project. Because of that I want to build the next part in another project. But if I try to load the new project at the end of the arrangement it just keeps on going for an unspecified time. It doesn't just load the new project at the end of the arrangement, but keeps on going. Eventually it will load the new project after some time, but I couldn't figure out how to influence this timespan. On the display it shows a blinking 1 and I can change that to higher numbers, but I guess the higher the number the longer it will loop?
Hi thanks for a brilliant and really helpful video. You mention that you can uncouple the cloned tracks in clip view - how do you do this so that they play at the same time? Also is there an option to loop the arrangement ? Thanks

How would one go about moving the play head in arranger view? I'm sure this must be possible as it's rather impractical listening to the song from the start each time...
Hey, according to the user guide: 1. Press [PLAY] the tracks will play from the start. 2. Press & hold (SCROLL◄►) + [PLAY] to play from desired/current scroll position. 3. Press [PLAY] to stop playback. 4. A white column ‘cursor’ will step through the grid in time with the sequence. Any muted rows / instruments will be shown muted yellow on the cursor. Press CROSS-SCREEN EDIT to switch between the cursor remaining fixed and the arrangement moving from right to left, or the cursor scrolling through the arrangement I hope that helps!
I don't understand why everyone hasn't abandoned MPC and Elektron for Deluge Actually I can see the draws for all, but this sure as hell looks better to me than making songs on MPC or Elektron
They are all different devices with different workflows. So everyone's preferences are different. Also, if Deluge was available in local shops, they would have the ability to compare them in person. That would likely help people see the pros and cons of each device.
Can you set a new start point in an arrangement while keeping the whole track so you can continue building a song halfway through the track without restarting from the beginning each time....I know you can start anywhere you like with holding down "scroll L/R and hitting play" but it only starts playback from that point one time which can be a little annoying.
Great question! I don't believe that you can do that yet. I would recommend making that feature request on Synthstrom's forum. Hopefully it gets implemented because that would be a great feature.
@@OllieLoops Yeah I will definitely do that because I like to zoom in for intricate adjustments on FX and it can be a little time consuming constantly zooming out and playing back.

Have a 1 measure clip with a "every 2" variation in it. If you lengthen that clip, the variations will be unrolled so to speak.
Actually, shift + press horizontal scroll should do this as well.
How would one go about moving the play head in arranger view? I'm sure this must be possible as it's rather impractical listening to the song from the start each time...
Hey, according to the user guide:
1. Press [PLAY] the tracks will play from the start.
2. Press & hold (SCROLL◄►) + [PLAY] to play from desired/current scroll
position.
3. Press [PLAY] to stop playback.
4. A white column ‘cursor’ will step through the grid in time with the
sequence. Any muted rows / instruments will be shown muted yellow on
the cursor. Press CROSS-SCREEN EDIT to switch between the cursor
remaining fixed and the arrangement moving from right to left, or the
cursor scrolling through the arrangement
I hope that helps!
@@OllieLoops Really helpful, thanks for the reply!
@@marcussmithereens-smithert5409 No problem! Have fun!
I don't understand why everyone hasn't abandoned MPC and Elektron for Deluge
Actually I can see the draws for all, but this sure as hell looks better to me than making songs on MPC or Elektron
At 06:13 you say it's possible to loop your clips in Arrangement view, but you don't explain how! Do you actually mean you can just place a clip 100 times if needed, or is there something you didn't explain clearly? Thanks in advance.
Very informative and helpful, however - I (still) have a hard time seeing the lighted pads clearly, as the 'ambient' light level is simply too bright. Top marks otherwise, Really great upload.......
Thanks for your comment and notes. This device is hard to film, but we’ll work on it. Thanks!
So nice to watch a review/tutorial where everything is so well explained. Some people tend to ramble, but you have a knack for being concise and detailed at the same time. You've got a great approach for instruction.....Glad to have found your uploads......
@@willswitchcraft Thanks! I'm glad they are helpful.
Just so you know you can change a white clip in arranger view into a colored clip so it can be reused.
Thanks! I see that now.
@@OllieLoops No problem. Great video. I've had my deluge for a little while here and it's always fun to see what people are doing with it. Great video. Looking forward to seeing more
@@snakenose1 Thanks, I wish I knew that about bringing clips out of Arranger View earlier. I'm looking forward to making more stuff with it and seeing where development takes it.
is that your voice or a computer talking?
That is my voice (computer voice).
