Bad Moon is number 4 in my top 5 werewolf movies, but it's definitely THE BEST MOVIE where a dog is the main character/hero of the film. People don't talk about it enough and I think in a genre where the dog usually doesn't make the end of the movie, we need more horror films where the dog ends up saving the day and living in the end. Your love of Werewolves is like my love of Vampires. I honestly love the variations out there on the lore. Werewolves share that with vampires. Also, love that Dog Soldiers was your no.1 I watched that on the channel Chiller back in the 2010s. It's such a good movie.
Sometimes I miss having cable like that. There’s upsides and downsides to the streaming age but being able to randomly stumble upon goldmines like that was awesome. And yeah, that’s what keeps it so fresh and different. I love when media uses the more rare lore like puddle of water in a wolfs paw print on a full moon being the inciting incident for becoming a werewolf like for La Bete in the Teen Wolf tv series. Or the even rarer perma-transformation like in Ginger Snaps. Everyone already knows what a werewolf is, so it breeds a lot of innovation and experimentation. Thanks for watching(:

I have seen Wer. It was a while ago, but I remember wishing the director had stuck to a lane more. It bounced back way too much between found footage, court procedural type stuff, and then finally the all out action chase scenes and felt wholly disjointed and the films ideas were lost as a result. As far as a scientific take, there really aren't any major players that come to mind that deal with the topic of hypertrichosis. Generally werewolf films do tend to go for the supernatural. I have quite a few of the hypertrichosis films in my watchlist, though. So if any of them are good, I'll let you know (: Thanks for watching the video(:

Really disappointed I didn’t see any mention of Hemlock Grove. One of my favorite werewolf themed series. Plus. Dhampir (vampires but non-trad). LOVED HEMLOCK GROVE.
I loved hemlock grove, too. First season, up until the ending, was awesome. Had very moody atmosphere with a murder mystery and hooked me. Then it started going downhill, but I still watched and enjoyed it to the end. Each season still brought great scenes, but the main central plotline lost me, and I started enjoying the filler bits and b-plots more and more. The dynamic between Bill Skarsgard and Landon Liboiron, the fleshing out of the lore of vampires, and the sick werewolf transformation scenes were all very enjoyable. But yeah, as to why it's not in the video, it's a tv show and not a movie. I try to keep things limited to film, as I don't watch much tv for various reasons. I guess it could technically be under an honorable mention, though.
I don't think Joe Dante directed The terminator. He did direct Gremlins though. Rob Botton did The Thing special effects except for the one you showed while mentioning him. That was Stan Winston who did the dog thing. Great video though i just figured id correct you on that.
I really hope I didn't say Joe Dante directed terminator. I know I put the cameo guy from gremlins, small soldiers, and howling in there and probably inserted his cameo from terminator as well. And when it comes to the effect, I'm pretty sure I showed just had time to show one clip from the film and I had to choose which one I wanted, which would obviously be the dog effect. Most people show the defib scene, but I love the dog scene a lot.
You know the werewolf from Bad Moon is really well made when I hated looking at it as a kid. And I loved werewolves just as much as I do now. Now, Bad Moon is based off of a book called Thor (after the dog’s name), and I love how the expression of the werewolf reflects how Thor described it in the novel. "It was utterly mad. …Thor froze. The Thing's eyes were neither canine nor human, but resembled both. It looked straight into Thor's eyes, and Thor looked back as he would never do as a human. It's eyes seemed to beckon to Thor. To enjoy the taste of blood and the smell of death, to revel in the power each of them possessed in such abundance - the power to kill.” And boy, were they intense on the actual costume.
The thing that terrified me as a kid about bad moon is the pre werewolf face of the antagonist absolutely chilling with what he says about his affliction his "private affair, his mistress." 😱😱😱😱

It's definitely a movie that gets left out a lot in my opinion, but I think you just had to be there in order to like it. I grew up with a lot of late 80's and early 90's stuff, so the film feels like a wacky time capsule to me. I still put it on once or twice a year for fun.
Silver Bullet has the ugliest stupidest alcoholic suicidal giant teddy bear from Supernatural-est werewolf effects EVER. Ruins that part of the film for me- you know, the werewolf part of a werewolf movie. The kid and the preacher are ok and Gary Busy is wonderful but Silver Bullet overall gets an F
I can agree. The werewolf from Silver Bullet looks like a bad taxidermied bear that went 10 rounds with mike tyson. I mostly attribute it to the budget, but them shooting it in the brightly lit house for the finale was a travesty. It looks so smooth and odd. Conversely, with Bad Moon, that costume just goes hard as hell even in the bedroom it's menacing. Helped out by the use of longer hair and great animatronics on the head piece. The things I like about silver bullet are the murder mystery with the main characters being kids, which when I try to think of an example of a young teen-lead werewolf film, without looking it up, I only really think of The Boy who Cried Werewolf, which was uhhh something. It's also got disabled representation, so that's neat. I love the characters, I love the town, the setting is nostalgic, and it's just a fun film. It's like The Exorcist, the things I like about the film aren't the main draw of the film. Thanks for watching btw! Glad this video is still being enjoyed as it was my first foray into long-form productions, and is definitely due for a remake in my new style. (:
My favorite werewolf transformations are actually in the TV series Hemlock Grove. Let me know if you want and I will try to find you episode numbers.. although I greatly enjoyed the entire series.
Man, I gotta rewatch bad moon. I saw it once as a teenager and thought it was dogsh*t and never bothered again. All I remember about it is I thought it was boring as hell and the werewolf was so ugly and underwhelming. After listening to you though maybe I just remember the transformation sequence. I haven't seen it in like fifteen years so the next time I find my box of DVDs I'm definetly digging it out and giving it a rewatch.
The transformation scene was so laughably out of place and bad, that I had a supercut where I cut it out in order to show the movie to people. I hope when you rewatch you can enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for watching! (:
Dog Soldiers is one of my favorite movies ever and even I have to applaud the boldness of putting it before An American Werewolf in London. That said, the cast really had a band of brothers chemistry that makes the movie; dunno if it works without that chemistry. Snow Hollow is probably my second favorite but like you said, not sure whether or not it qualifies. About to watch After Midnight which is giving me definite werewolf vibes, loved the director's zombie flick The Battery.
Okay have to give a mild spoiler that After Midnight isnt a werewolf BUT, is another great film from Jeremy. I also really loved The Battery. And yeah I think when I wrote the script for the video I had a hard time picking 10 movies id consider gold, so then i cut it down to 8 and remember struggling to find one for that position as well. Good werewolf movies that stand also as good movies in general are slim pickings, regretfully. I think id still put dog soldiers above AWIL, because its just so much more up my alley. Its really close, though. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy After Midnight (:
Another thing, The beast must die was released in Brazil with a gag dub that change the movie soo much that you only know theres a werewolf in the last 30 seconds
That's actually really hilarious. Probably made the film a more fun experience, to be honest. As much as I liked the overall british feel of the film, and it's cast, and the concept of an Agatha Christie film with a werewolf twist, it just never stuck out for me on any of the watches.
I have quite a few friends who I've tried showing werewolf films to. And they all seem to enjoy dog soldiers the most. So there's definitely something special about that film. (:
I have! I enjoyed it for what it was. Out of the recent werewolf flicks I've seen, I'd definitely say my favorite is Wolf of Snow Hollow, with Teddy right behind it. But Werewolves Within was a good werewolf caper and didn't hurt to watch. Locations were awesome, and the Lead was incredibly likeable. I believe I didn't add it to the "recents" list for my video because it didn't feel like it fits in next to everything else. Also it was awesome seeing the Progressive ad person in a film for a change.
Just found your channel and I’m thoroughly enjoying it I will say for the Bad Moon werewolf, I was always slightly disappointed in it. The design and body are amazing, but I think the head lets it down. I remember a lot of scenes where the jaw is just hanging slack open like the mechanism broke and they didn’t have time to fix it, and a person pet peeve of mine is when werewolf costumes can’t turn their head. When the werewolf has to do a jarring full body turn ala the Keaton Batman it has always kind of pulled me out and reminded me I’m watching a man in a suit I’ve always wanted to try my own werewolf suit where the head has animatronics but the head and neck are controlled by rod puppetry to make it truly smooth
Finally I can get to this comment, sorry it took so long. I actually agree to a point. And it's a perspective I never noticed, but maybe subconsciously, that the head can't even turn. It does however lend itself to some reallly cool shots of the werewolf snapping its whole body around. Like the first shot post-transformation. But that is absolutely a limitation that I would view as a "need-to-fix" on-set. So I completely understand the disappointment. I would want them to be making critical and purposeful creative decisions, and not forced to make decisions because of an issue. As far as the agape mouth, it reminded me of the rabid coyotes I remember seeing as a kid. Mouth open staring at you from the forest with dead eyes. This is helped by the fact that the werewolf looks strung out as shit most of the time. So I almost took it as intentional, given the brother didn't want to kill, but was afflicted by a disease that took away his autonomy like rabies. So maybe in that case the malfunctions weren't so bad. But yeah Bat-wolf stiff neck syndrome is hilarious to think about. I'm the same, have always wanted a really sick and sleek werewolf costume. Apparently in todays day and age that makes me a furry and I'm never beating the allegations according to my girlfriend. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching! (:
If it makes you feel any better, I’m working on a book series about werewolf hunters and I’m spending a lot of time delving into the science and evolution of werewolves in this universe, meaning I’ve spent countless hours studying werewolves in history and pop culture, studying werewolf designs, sketching werewolves, finding traits from animals I want my wolves to have, studying animal sounds to figure out how I want them to sound… I’m pretty sure I check off all the boxes to look out for lol
@@BrokeProductions That actually sounds really awesome! That's one of the creative processes that I enjoy the most. Getting to sit and really flesh out something to a great detail like that. Like making character journals, or tediously detailed backstories that never get explicitly mentioned in the final product. I saw someone say they make music playlists for all their characters and tell the actors to listen to them. The world building and background detail is always fascinating to me.
Which one would you be referring to? I know of Wolf Children, Spice and Wolf, and Hellsing has some werewolves. Have only seen Wolf Children and a few episodes of the other two, though.
From the music selection to the wardrobe department, American Werewolf in Paris is a pretty loud time capsule of that late 90's era. Lot's of charm, but I might be severely biased since I grew up watching it.
thats disappointing, i was hoping to discover some period piece werewolf movies, something along the lines of The Witch (2015) but for werewolves, is Red Riding Hood (2011) the only one like that? everything else seems to be set in modern times
Off the top of my head; Brotherhood of the Wolf, VikingVulf has an intro set in medieval times, The Cursed is a period piece, Ginger Snaps 3, Company of Wolves can sort of apply, and if you're good with some schlock then the werewolf western Blood Moon (2014) is an obvious recommendation.
the honorable mentions are good i would just add Werewolf by night,Wild Wilderness and The feeding Also The Lone wolf that in brazil was selled as Silver Bullet 2
Glad to see you're watching more of my videos! I plan to remake this one in a documentary format down the road, but I'm keeping it up because of the detail I gave to the honorable mentions. As for the ones you mentioned. Werewolf By Night wasn't actually out when I made this, but I did enjoy it and would put it on here now. And I couldn't find anything on the other films you mentioned, but I wrote their names down to look into another time.
@@Houndovhell sorry i made a mistake the first is actually Wild Country and Peter Capaldi is on the movie as a horny priest, the second is The Feeding(2006) by Paul Moore
Thanks! I used to watch In Praise of Shadows, so that's a high compliment. I've been really down and panicked since I've been putting in more time into videos trying to appease UA-cam demanding the monthly uploads and every video I've done recently has just been doing worse and worse. I have less time to give each video and more work to do in such little time that I have to crunch and pull several all-nighters instead of just being able to polish them with care. It diminishes the end product, I'm unable to sleep, and then the videos under-perform and it feels like it's because I didn't just work 18 hours a day the whole time. It's really discouraging. I'm trying my best to get the next one out by the end of this month, and I'll see where I'm at mentally and if it performs decently, and then Ill go from there. Also depends on if I'm okay with what 1 month of work looks like for these long videos, and if I'd want to keep doing that. So thanks for chatting and enjoying, let's me know people are still legitimately interested and that there's still hope. (:
It's hilarious that all you had to say was horny peter capaldi and I know the exact movie you're talking about. I remember watching it on the SciFi channel here in NA, and was disappointed because I was realllly digging the intro and up until around the midpoint. When they started showing their cg effects in broad daylight it kind of kicked it down a bunch of pegs for me.
My fav.Werewolf movie is the underworld series. I love vampire ones too. So it has both😋😋😋 I liked the first Howling movie too. A couple of the others in that series wasnt so great though. I'd recommend checking out a WereWolf called Battledogs, if you havent seen it
The Howling series really should have stopped with the first imo. But they might as well be Werecows cause of course they're going to milk it. Although I do enjoy just how wacky it gets. Kangaroo werewolves AND werewolf jesus in the same movie? They had balls. I actually really like the 3rd Underworld movie and wish they had continued down that road with more Michael Sheen. I don't care what kind of retconning needed to be done. I have seen Battledogs. I went in expecting a cheaper budget dog soldiers with at least some cool action scenes and got absolutely not that. Surprising seeing that both of the films were premiered on SyFy/SciFi when they have such a large gap in budget and competency.
@@Houndovhell I saw the 3rd underworld it is about the lycans there back story leading up to why war broke out with the vampires. I enjoyed it they did s good job with the storyline. And of course who doesnt mind hordes of werewolves charging😉😉 Battledogs had lots of good action and an original concept aka the woman being bit by a real wolf
Yep! Was a good decade ago so it's not the freshest in my mind. Remember it having a very low budget B film style with none of the charm that other similarly budgeted films have. There's actually quite a few werewolf films that try to do the whole advanced evolution/tech werewolf thing, and I don't think I've seen one that isn't just schlock which is disappointing.
@@Houndovhell good point. I saw that one back in my early teens along the same time as Dog Soldiers. Nothing on the remake of The Wolfman in your rankings though?
@@zacdawkins9080 Nah the only good thing to come from the Wolfman remake for me was getting to see Sir Anthony Hopkins completely eat up his role as a werewolf. You could tell he enjoyed the hell out of that.
American werewolf in London is so over rated. John Landis should forever be labeled a murderer and discredited. But you did redeem yourself by putting dog soldiers as your number one
Hard agree. Which is part of the reason I keep mention of him to a minimum. Even skipped over his part entirely in Twilight Zone for the Anthology video because it would have just derailed, and I try to keep things light.
I just started the video; what did he do? I know there’s like one really outdated joke at the start of AAWIL mentioned by Jack (slightly SA-y?), but I never knew of anything the director himself did.
@@Pastamist an accident on the set of the Twilight Zone movie that led to the deaths of three actors, two of whom were kids. Landis had been violating all manner of labour and safety laws on set so he's generally held responsible, though he was acquitted of manslaughter charges in court.
@@ScarTrek Jesus. And I don’t suppose he made a real big deal out of it either… that’s shitty. Oh well. Ginger Snaps was my runner-up after AAWIL, and Werewolf by Night is good. I wish werewolves got enough attention for big studios to actually attempt to tackle and go big like demonic spirits and vampires.
@Pastamist there's a really cool series on shudder called cursed movies and one episode was of the incident that happened on the set of the twilight zone movie. John Landis came out as a complete @sshole and didn't care. He was willing to sacrifice the safety of everyone for the perfect shot.
Love it. I have all three Ginger Snaps movies on dvd and by far my fav is the sort of prequel one (technically the 3rd) and it visually gives me "ravenous" meets brotherhood of the wolf vibes. Love to rewatch Cursed every fall because i also watch sleepy hollow abd Christina Ricci is always fun to watch. I still love the Van Helsing wolf design best and think its my fav transition with the reverse fur/skin. I read Blood and Chocolate but the film was a bit disappointing. Same with Kelley Armstrongs books featuring Elena, a rare female werewolf that was made into a tv show on sci fi. The books are far better. But you def hit on most of my collection and movies I've seen. I did like the newer red riding hood with Amanda Seyfried but its by no means one of the greats. I just love fairy tales and always want to read and see their iterations. Now i need to re watch the brothers Grimm with heath ledger and see if theres any werewolves.

Awil
Howling
Brotherhood 👍
My favorite werewolf movie is dog soldier are better than the other werewolves movie the ones I don’t like at all ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have quite a few friends who I've tried showing werewolf films to. And they all seem to enjoy dog soldiers the most. So there's definitely something special about that film. (:
Have you seen Werewolves Within? I just watched it. It is really fun, and bonkers.
Thanks for the tip! I would love to see it.
Just found your channel and I’m thoroughly enjoying it
I will say for the Bad Moon werewolf, I was always slightly disappointed in it. The design and body are amazing, but I think the head lets it down. I remember a lot of scenes where the jaw is just hanging slack open like the mechanism broke and they didn’t have time to fix it, and a person pet peeve of mine is when werewolf costumes can’t turn their head. When the werewolf has to do a jarring full body turn ala the Keaton Batman it has always kind of pulled me out and reminded me I’m watching a man in a suit
I’ve always wanted to try my own werewolf suit where the head has animatronics but the head and neck are controlled by rod puppetry to make it truly smooth
The world building and background detail is always fascinating to me.
how do you only mention Teen Wolf during the history section and not say anything about it? J/K I'm only mad because it was my into to werewolves.
weird that in the terms of anime theres only 1...and is the kind you can talk abbout on youtube
Which one would you be referring to? I know of Wolf Children, Spice and Wolf, and Hellsing has some werewolves. Have only seen Wolf Children and a few episodes of the other two, though.
@@Houndovhell i forgot hellsing, but focusing most on werewolf i know a baddly animated h-anime called Legend of wolf woman
I have to check that out now. xD
Silver bullet is too low. Lol. But there’s a lot in here that I’ve never heard of
I admit, I also love American Werewolf in Paris. It is fun!
From the music selection to the wardrobe department, American Werewolf in Paris is a pretty loud time capsule of that late 90's era. Lot's of charm, but I might be severely biased since I grew up watching it.
Thanks so much for not mentioning wolfen. That movie sucked so much.
Great video! Please fix your curtain rod.
Sorry, too many randomly placed F-bombs.
thats disappointing, i was hoping to discover some period piece werewolf movies, something along the lines of The Witch (2015) but for werewolves, is Red Riding Hood (2011) the only one like that? everything else seems to be set in modern times
I was a teenage werewolf 1957 not 1964
Werewolfs in video games ? Yugo(bloody roar) ,Warwick(league of legends) and others .
I'm a Saberwulf main on Killer Instinct. (: now if only CS had a werewolf operator
the honorable mentions are good i would just add
Werewolf by night,Wild Wilderness and The feeding
Also The Lone wolf that in brazil was selled as Silver Bullet 2
@@Houndovhell i always like to see Channels that give a deep dive on horror channel, like your,Movie timelines and In praise of shadows
I loved your video! Am a long time werewolf aficionado.
Thanks! I'm glad people are enjoying it! (:
@@Houndovhell You are welcome! Please keep them coming...
Did you ever watch Project Metalbeast?
@@Houndovhell O yeah absolutely. I feel the attack on the gypsy camp was one of the better attack sequences I've seen in a werewolf movie though.
