@@megasoniczxx Was it that hard for LakeFeperd to implement different score lock times for different stages? Feels like overcompensating for how Spark 2 handled score medals...
@@MariusUrucu I'd assume so. Other than a few crticizims though, I think spark 3 might be the best "sonic styled" 3D platformer or at least a contender for the best. It's definitely my favorite indie platformer now after beating it. Spark 3 is pretty much what I've wanted from a new 3d Sonic game plus more
Some criticisms I have are really just with the story. While I did like the backstory parts (Freom's backstory especially, that felt very atmospheric), the main plot felt....eh... It's not bad, but there were a lot of points that could've been better. Float felt really more like a background character that you could switch to. Like another comment said, you can't really feel for her because Spark has no time spent with her and being friends. Plus, tbh I'd rather the mole twist didn't happen at all because it feels like a waste if Float just never comes back if there're any future installments . But if Float had to be a mole, I'd rather Float be the one to get the whole identity crisis Spark has as she is literally a copy of a person that was already dead. And then after that, Spark would be a good friend and snap her out of her delusion and she would help in the final battle in some way. But, eh, I can't really complain. Lake was trying his damndest as an indie dev could to make the story good. And since Spark doesn't really have the budget to fully fledge out the story, I don't blame Lake. Aside from that, I really can't complain. The gameplay just bangs, the music bangs, and overall, this game bangs.
I mean it makes sense why Spark would also freak out. He is also a copy as the original is persumed to be long dead. The fact that he’s been trying to thwart Fark’s plan possibly a thousand times in a simulation probably would be a huge mind fuck.
@@tjlnintendo Oh for sure. Anyone would get mind fucked over that (save for possibly a shonen protag like Goku or Sonic with their "NEVER SURRENDER!!!" attitude) and it's no surprise Spark would as well. I just think it's a missed opportunity that Float couldn't have the worse effects on that. Because in a hypothetical scenario where Float was still tag teaming with Spark, I would imagine this news would break her. Imagine thinking you're saving your friend and the world from tyranny only to realize the person who inadvertently caused the destruction of the world and it's people was you.

Before the game was out I was feeling iffy about Spark as a whole as fellow fangame to indie series Freedom Planet 2 tried to distance itself from it's Sonic inspirations Spark 2 doubled down, because of that I was worried people would only recommend the series as a passive aggressive way to voice how disappointed they are with current Sonic games and not because they're just fun games. Glad to see they still are, really solid game here. Defiantly feels like there was a push for a more general crowd and not Sonic Speedrunners considering I actually managed to get some time medals on the first try. Some more distinct level themes that don't feel ripped from Adventure or Heroes, the Historia level being my fav . The combat is simple and fun, though that ended up being kinda of bad thing cause in my experience it makes bosses a bit to easy (after dying around 3 times I just learned to wail on them until they show their tell's and parry and didn't die to any boss afterwards including the final one) Things I don't like, the fall damage mechanic, which was clearly made so you couldn't just beat the 2nd to last level of the game that's just a vertical pit by falling. Jester forms have almost been completely dropped, with only 1 in the game. Probably because of how much of a pain it would to design levels, bosses, and movesets for more than just 4 of em so if there's a 4th game I hope they make a return. And that story...man. 1st I don't really like dropping the backstories for the 3 robots bosses from the last game in this one (even though all three are technically in the game.) The real big problem here is there really isn't a story being pushed after initial exposition at the start. All of the story more or less get's dumped onto at the tail end. It's hard to care about Float being a mole since there are no scenes of Spark and Float being friends. And the reveal to basically have the game become The Matrix is a wild jump from the last 2 games 1 especially. Also Lake makes it pretty clear that Fark is his favorite -turns good at the end of 1 and his weapon becomes part of Super Spark -get's his own dedicated campaign in the 1st game -is the star of the 2nd game which was initially named after him but changed probably cause the name makes no sense without context of the 1st game -Is built up as the villain of 3rd game but turns out to be good all along -is playable in 3 making him playable in all game while Spark was only cameoed in 2 So yeah, overall good, really hope they patch in a new vocal theme like they did for 2
When I first finished Spark 3 I was initially a little taken aback by the sudden and abrupt twist at the ending. (If you finished the game, you know what I'm talking about.) But now that I've had about a year to digest what happened, I see it with a little more perspective... No, shall we say, clarity. I thought it was a bit too much too fast, but I think that's half the point. For us to react the same way Spark did; his entire view of reality collapsed around him, completely obliterated. He (and by extension, we) has spent this whole time thinking the game had an endpoint that was going to be at least partially reasonable. Stop the bad guys, save the day, blah blah. But this? There was no way I could have even half-expected it was coming until we made it to the end of Utopia Shelter and the whole thing came cascading down. It's meant to completely slam and throw you. It does that very well. Furthermore, I found the bit of commentary from Clarity about reliving his achievements over and over again to be absolutely fucking chilling. A real Psycho Mantis moment that accurately and correctly predicts player behavior and the ways we respond to a video game, and juxtaposing our actions within the events of the story. At first I thought it was a pretty cheap attempt at doing just that, but I realized down the road that it was pretty well-executed. The game does plenty to keep you replaying the stages you like, it comments on the very behavior it incites in you as someone playing a video game. Really clever stuff, in my opinion. The story has a very clear "NieR-Automata" vibe to it's last moments and in discussing the finality of Spark as a character, who he was and who this version we've played as was. Themes of humanity, self-determination and identity are all pretty clear in the question "Who am I really?" when confronted with the fact that the progenitor of your entire existence is likely nothing but dust now, and that you're merely a puppeteer to their image, playing at being them in a very twisted attempt at reconciling your old reality and this new one you live in. Which one of us was the real one? Which one was fake? Spark would likely indicate the former, and Clarity the latter, but I think it's both. It's difficult to put into words how this game made me feel. Especially at the end, which I think it did to almost everyone. If I had one major criticism of it, that would be that the plot twist happened far too late in the story, with no time for Spark or Fark or anyone to really ruminate on what happened and watch their shift in personality after an extreme shift in reality and perspective. The real question is; why have a narrative in a game at all, and what qualifies it as a well or poorly written narrative? Personally, I think of three main pillars; Did it make you think? Did it make you feel, and is the game better for it? For all three, I think it's pretty clear that the answer is a resounding yes. Was it perfect? No. There's a serious lack of foreshadowing, and recognize that sentiment isn't exactly fair, not everything needs foreshadowing to be a good plot twist, especially if there's a good reason to hide the twist from us (i.e. like Spark 3 does for the explicit purpose of completely shattering expectations about the story's scope and sequestering the thesis behind it) Ultimately, I love this game, flaws and all. I didn't really say anything about the gameplay or level design or music or art in this because I simply think all of them are perfect, and I'm also not very good at reviewing those things. I am however, as you might have been able to tell by this entirely-too-long comment, a writer. Stories are what I understand. and I spent the entire epilogue thinking, crying, laughing and wondering. So, yeah. I'd say this game kicks ass.
Oh, and also, I want multiplayer. A battle/race mode. I'd kill for it. Lake, please. I'm begging you. I want to play this game with my friends, and more importantly, maybe Marius one day.
Just finished the game and man was it good! I actually liked the super esoteric and out there twist at the end. I'm a sucker for stuff like that. Nice playthrough man, I need to make my own video as well this series needs more attention. It truly is a hidden gem
It's good to see you play the game and watch as a pro how you progress through the levels. I focus more on the exploration and the search for the medals. I'm enjoying the game but damn that last level is so frustrating when you have limited lives and you get thrown back to the start (I haven't finished it yet). Although it hurt me a lot to see the end, But seeing Spark and Fark become friends helped to remove just a little of that bitterness.
Did the Clarity fight feel underwhelming to anyone else? Like, it was well-designed but I feel like it lacked the anime hype the finales of the first two games had
I'll say it its Sonic Adventure But Better. If you can say you're okay with sonic adventure but without the sonic IP on it then you're WAY more open to getting what you want from an indie dev. But if not then keep waiting and we will enjoy spark
Thank God the soundtrack for this game was released. I've been addicted to that Boss: On the Run song at 1:21:02 for about 2 hours now. That's gotta be one of the coolest boss songs I've heard in a video game. Looking forward to Spark 4.
The only thing I disliked about the game was transitioning between movement and combat as well as death by falling too fast. I really feel like I should have the dash attack during the combat sections, and suddenly losing as soon as I find a non-weak enemy feels very weird. The only time it was used was towards the end of the game, and it felt like the only purpose was to prevent unintended skips. It was just super awkward to go into an intended free-fall, and then stop my momentum to prevent myself dying, instead of just placing more of those rings that reset the death timer for you. If you entered the free fall after expending a double jump or dash you really couldn't do anything about it. I appreciate how over the top the story was, but as someone new to the series it fell pretty flat for me. The delivery of the story was very mixed for me which I can't really blame the dev for because of how much work went into the other aspects of the game.
Yeah, I really think the hitting those rings should've been the actual challenge for those fall segments (maybe space them further apart so you actively have to move around a bit more to hit them) and having to jump or dash should've been a failure on the players part for either missing them or not feeling confident.
This game and Rollin' Rascal prove that there's nothing mysterious or near impossible about making Sonic work in 3D. The series is just victim to a combination of unfortunate circumstances, time and budget constraints imposed by Sega, piss-poor management and Sonic Team being headed by misguided people who have lost their grasp on what makes their own mascot tick.
Like i do not like the final bosses track i think it's kinda lacking because imo every other final boss track in the game was better and felt more final like but i can only praise this game it's insane good and i just sped through it in like 3 days the ending was (sorry for curses) a total mind fuck and i did not expect such a finale and end i showed the demo to a friend he played it himself and he wants to buy the whole collection now :) will replay countless times because it never gets old (i mean i myself played through the demo atleast 5 times)
@@MarkerMurker Fall Damage, Vehicles, Parry System was way neutered, Some of the stages were pretty uninteresting in comparison (in my opinion), hated the get the coin missions, also hated the defeat the enemy missions, Less Jester powers, some stages were very confusing to navigate through. i notice the enemies take forever to retaliate or fight back, even when the robot has a clear shot, its suppose on be on hard difficulty right? just a noticeable nitpick, the game is amazing.
Nah, I don't blame enemies feel a bit too static at times, despite the combat having quite some depth when it comes to combos (something I mention in the description). If enemies were more aggressive and have extra attacks (most notably attacks that knock you out of your air combos) or even combo breakers that would make the combat more engaging IMO.
Since Sonic channels focus exclusively on Sonic, I guess it's fear of not getting shafted by the UA-cam algorithm, especially if its their primary source of income. Take it from me, as someone who does primarily Sonic content but also branches out to other franchises and genres, UA-cam algorithm punished me hard until recently. Only reason I can afford to do what I do is because I see UA-cam as my hobby/side hustle and I don't think of my channel as a brand

@@MariusUrucu Yeah, you can basically be in a level for 20 minutes and not get it. Makes it feel like more of a novelty since even dying doesn't affect your score from what i've noticed so it's basically free.
@@megasoniczxx Was it that hard for LakeFeperd to implement different score lock times for different stages? Feels like overcompensating for how Spark 2 handled score medals...
@@MariusUrucu I'd assume so. I don't know if you saw it but in the pacific abyss gameplay it was still there so in between those two months he must've re-thought some things and taken it out either because of what you mentioned or the other thing that I mentioned in my initial post to make things easier.
Still a better story than Sa2.
@@ikagura Is it really, though? I'm not even a huge fan of Sonic as of now, but SA2 still has a banging story for a platformer.
Nah Level design is no where near heroes and adventure; its more like unleashed and future titles after it.. This game is only based on speed BUT SA1- was based on platforming; mini games and level sections and focus little speed... This what made sonic adventure elites in level design and replay value
The only levels that was really based on speed was speedy highway and windy valley the other levels was based on fun platforming and minigames in the levels ... Unleashed level design and games after it is just long stretch linear sections in the level because again it has to support boost system so the levels in those games are long and linear like in this game in most sections but the platforming tight spaces like SA1 is design good
This game just need to ditch the wide long linear empty areas .. SA1 was never that
Before the game was out I was feeling iffy about Spark as a whole as fellow fangame to indie series Freedom Planet 2 tried to distance itself from it's Sonic inspirations Spark 2 doubled down, because of that I was worried people would only recommend the series as a passive aggressive way to voice how disappointed they are with current Sonic games and not because they're just fun games.
The combat is simple and fun, though that ended up being kinda of bad thing cause in my experience it makes bosses a bit to easy (after dying around 3 times I just learned to wail on them until they show their tell's and parry and didn't die to any boss afterwards including the final one)
Things I don't like, the fall damage mechanic, which was clearly made so you couldn't just beat the 2nd to last level of the game that's just a vertical pit by falling.
Also Lake makes it pretty clear that Fark is his favorite
-turns good at the end of 1 and his weapon becomes part of Super Spark
-get's his own dedicated campaign in the 1st game
-is the star of the 2nd game which was initially named after him but changed probably cause the name makes no sense without context of the 1st game
-Is built up as the villain of 3rd game but turns out to be good all along
-is playable in 3 making him playable in all game while Spark was only cameoed in 2
So yeah, overall good, really hope they patch in a new vocal theme like they did for 2
0:38 wait, the first level is a race car level?! Be quiet and take my money!
This game looks like it has alot of replay value, lots of different ways to approach a level, and alot of content
When I first finished Spark 3 I was initially a little taken aback by the sudden and abrupt twist at the ending. (If you finished the game, you know what I'm talking about.)
But now that I've had about a year to digest what happened, I see it with a little more perspective...
No. There's a serious lack of foreshadowing, and recognize that sentiment isn't exactly fair, not everything needs foreshadowing to be a good plot twist, especially if there's a good reason to hide the twist from us (i.e. like Spark 3 does for the explicit purpose of completely shattering expectations about the story's scope and sequestering the thesis behind it)
Ultimately, I love this game, flaws and all.
The game actually deserved all the hype it got
my favorite game in the Spark series without a doubt. It's an amazing game with a phenomenal soundtrack.
Although it hurt me a lot to see the end, But seeing Spark and Fark become friends helped to remove just a little of that bitterness.
the sync with those 3 hits was SO smooth 1:30:10 it only happens at 10:30:12 but listen to it from 1:30:05 to really hear it properly
Did the Clarity fight feel underwhelming to anyone else? Like, it was well-designed but I feel like it lacked the anime hype the finales of the first two games had
Yeah, I felt the same way. Not bad but definitely a downgrade compared to Spark 1 and 2.
idk i thought it was a whole lot more anime than the other 2 but then again i think i watch too much anime so ive seen stuff like that often
I see that the creator love Sonic Heroes so much
I'll say it its Sonic Adventure But Better. If you can say you're okay with sonic adventure but without the sonic IP on it then you're WAY more open to getting what you want from an indie dev. But if not then keep waiting and we will enjoy spark
Even now FNF finds its way on your channel, lol
WTF was that plot.
amazing game
Good for you for doing what I was too lazy to do and spread the good word of Spark the Electric Jester 3 to the world via UA-cam!
The music..... *is beyond bussin*
Makes me feel so goddamn nostalgic.
Spark 3 was certainly a pretty fun time, but god damn was that ending really bad and frankly soured my thoughts on the game after finishing it.

Cheers for the video. I was stuck at 2:54:24 and had no idea what to do.

How so? What differences did you dislike?
@@MarkerMurker Fall Damage, Vehicles, Parry System was way neutered, Some of the stages were pretty uninteresting in comparison (in my opinion), hated the get the coin missions, also hated the defeat the enemy missions, Less Jester powers, some stages were very confusing to navigate through. Barriers that don't let you proceed until all the enemies are defeated, the music in Spark 1 and 2 were a little bit memorable (in my opinion.)
I don't know, I just felt like Spark 2 had less of that and more action when it came to level design and Speed. Yes it has flaws, but for me it was a great game and Spark 3 just ended up disappointing me. Every time I had a little bit of fun and was enjoying the game, it would all come to a halt with one of the issues I mentioned above. To me a big step back from Spark 2. I could understand the change to parry cause of how OP it was in 2 especially since now the parry completely breaks any enemy defense and staggers them for big damage combos which I kinda prefer
Sucks that there aren't as many powers but I liked how they were replaced with different characters that played a bit more unique than the powers in spark 2. They even have their own platforming utility now

i notice the enemies take forever to retaliate or fight back, even when the robot has a clear shot, its suppose on be on hard difficulty right? just a noticeable nitpick, the game is amazing.

Take it from me, as someone who does primarily Sonic content but also branches out to other franchises and genres, UA-cam algorithm punished me hard until recently. Only reason I can afford to do what I do is because I see UA-cam as my hobby/side hustle and I don't think of my channel as a brand
