- In a recent Jist interview, the former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg discussed the Indian government's thoughts on Electoral bonds and the controversies surrounding it.
Instead of holding poltical parties accountable and prevent corruption, this man seems more proud that corruption is now legalised and is through formal banking channels.
Dont live in idealism.... Live in practicality.

He is quoting wrong percentage. In fact more than 90% fund collected through Electoral bonds received by BJP.
He is quoting overall number from 2018. 90 percent figure is only about in 2022- 2023.
Overall figure is 48.4% for BJP. Reported in Tribune newspaper today

1) How electoral bond stops from giving cash donations now?
2) The limit which existed earlier that you can donate only 7.5% of average of last 3 yrs profit, why that limit was removed, doesn't that lead to creating shell companies and giving donations to political parties.

4) Why do you want to keep secret name of doners?

I do not understand why Income Tax is exempted while doing Party funding.....Income Tax is a Federal Revenue. So our political parties are using Citizens Money and Shareholders Money to fight elections? How is this constitutional?

The RBI and EC has opposed it. The law ministry called ut unconstitutional in 2017. But obviously everyone let it go once because jiski laathi uski bhaish. The electoral bonds are past now stop justifying them.

The real question is:
Why do corporates donate to political parties? Once you know their motive, you will understand the quid pro quo. And that's why they don't want to put it on records. Most if these businesses are not doing charity by political donations.
Ideally, every donation to political parties should go via banking system.
Ideally the constitutional body like EC should create a law and process to build a transparent solution for political funding

Make every donation even Rs1 mandatory through digital means. If companies have to hide the fact that they are donating to which political party then mostly it's quid pro pro. Would be interesting to see the data for all for all political parties.

Interviewer should have immediately asked a counter question and demolished Garg's incorrect assertion of 30-35% transparency. It is well known, except to the interviewer (or he is too afraid to say this), that parties get about 90-95% of funding though Electoral Bond.
If the hidden agenda of the interviewer was to justify electoral bonds, why would he ask a counter question ⁉️

In this case where there are two sides in which one side public interest and other side business men interest , GOVT will go to business men interest side seeing that their profits increase (which is white) will bring more donation in party then in keeping public interest priority.

This secretary supports the Govt as most of the IAS persons do. These IAS people support the Govt irrespective of whether t is right or wrong as they want personal favours from the politicians for their postings.

This subject is a very big issue. Why you issue bond every month? To buy MLAs? Wrong practice. Now ask the expenditures from the Electoral fund collrcted. How much each MLA cost?
Basic question isnwhy should any company donate to any party? Obviously there is some quid pro quo ? Making it anonymous only helps in removing it from the public eye, to be able to find the connection between how much has been donated to a party and what benefits the company has accrued.

There should be ceiling on donations for national, state and regional parties. Democracy is not something which can be purchased and so does the citizens of India.
What this man purposely ommited that that ruling party BJP was getting information on donar within 48 hrs of any other party availing the bond since SBI was sharing this info on daily basis with finance ministry. In this ruling party had advantage and can bully others if anyone dare to donate its rival faction. Earlier large companies and foreigners where not able to fund party in India due to need for cash but with electoral bond this become feasible.

I think he has not read the Supreme Court judgement about bonds because ruling party can easily know who has funded whom and they know it. The total money given through the electoral bonds in financial year 2022-2023 was almost given wholely to the ruling BJP. 90 percent of money was funded to the ruling party. And there is a lot to electoral bonds it's unconstitutional at any degree even if he is an ex-IAS that doesn't means that if he justifies something using logical fallacy then it would be accepted.

Why not remove the cash limit of 20k? Why not make it mandatory to donate by UPI? If ordinary voter wants to donate(which is very rare) he can donate thru UPI. Company can donate thru normal bank transfer. Why electoral bond in all this? With bond, even foreign owned company can donate in india (eg. Amazon, Meta) anonymously. And where is the confidentialty for donors? The ruling party (which runs the govt, which owns SBI) knows who gave to whom.

I mean Supreme court has made their verdict very clear that the transparency in political funding is absolutelt essential as thhe public needs to know, who influences the decisions of the decision makers they chose by voting. And this person is so conveniently lamenting on behalf of the opposition? Sir, please remember the PIL was filed only by 1 political party CPIM, which didn't take 1 single rupee donation through electoral bonds along with NGO ADR.
