In an interview to share his immediate response to the State Bank of India’s petition requesting more than three and a half months extra time till the 30th of June to make public electoral bond details, one of the Supreme Court’s most respected former judges has said “I don’t believe the SBI’s explanation”. Justice Deepak Gupta also revealed that he was part of a bench which in 2019 had told the SBI to collate and keep the relevant details of the electoral bond scheme i.e. to maintain records and he does not accept that they now need three and a half months extra time (over and above the initial three weeks granted to them) to make the information available to the Election Commission. At one point in the interview he said the SBI’s position was “absolutely ridiculous”. Justice Gupta also said “this explanation is not really worth much”.

It is a matter of not more than 30 minutes, give command electrol bond payment done from the dates and by whom just select and give some time and print. In minutes you will get print on your printer and mail it to SC thats it. It shows ineffcieny of SBI, it is intentionaly hiding the information by the direction of PM. If SBI'S petition is accepted and given time then the SC should order postponement of elections till such time that data is furnished by SBI. As every voter needs to know who bought the electoral bonds etc.

They could have said that after the order also but waited for closing of time 6th march,, also to fulfil SC order they could form a separate team to assemble this info, also would have separate team for EBonds handling,,

CA intern during there 3 years articleship paid low salary 5K to 10K per month. Such guy will compile and sort out in 3-4 days time if not 3-4 hrs. Will it require 3 months time? If this was an European country, bankers responsible would have held for criminal proceedings. I have worked at leading banks and financial organisations. It should not take more than an hour. Banks are legally responsible to maintain KYC in India and abroad. The information is readily available and probably staring at the the eyes of the employees of SBI who have access to the system. From my first hand experience as a data analyst and data modeller with reputed banks and financial organisations SBI, is blatantly lying

In that 22000+ bonds 15000 is one crore bonds it seems. So the balance of 7000+ should be segregated.

As a former banker, I was surprised.... I felt that the Supreme Court should have given just a day or two to SBI considering the five long years that the judiciary has taken to call the scheme unconstitutional...

It may be an unfortunate and shameful on the Sbi for extension of time to submit the details of purchasers' names of electrol bonds as by a CLICKING A BUTTON can send the information then why the sbi needs time somemore time as per the public opinion. Funny thing is SBI could have informed the Supreme Court immediately on receiving the order that they would need time until the end of June to provide the details. But they waited until almost the deadline given by the court before asking for additional time. This shows that something is wrong and they are under pressure not to divulge details before the elections. Now the Supreme Court should show its clout and insist on getting the details of the bonds as per the original time frame!

It is very surprising that a behemoth banker, who proved to be very adaptive to the latest technological advancements, is unable to furnish such a small piece of information, is really foolish to believe. Voter will be unable to take well informed decision and SBI's inability to provide the information is not in the best interest of the DEMOCRACY.

2nd solution - SC should say - park all the money that BJP has received from electoral bonds should be submitted to SC and not used for election till details are mafe public by SBI
The disclosure of records must be handled purely on technical grounds. So, SBI can disclose all the records within few days. If it is asking for 3 months time it means that the central govt is pressurizing SBI to act as per its intention. This is another case of intimidating the institutes.

Honestly the ex-Judge spoke the TRUTH. PTR Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister in an interview said Quote "the SBI is incompetent in digitalisation of the largest bank account, data can be unloaded by a click of a computer bottom. Shame for SBI" Unquote.
SC should ask for all internal correspondence of all officers who instructed their subordinates to do the job & arrive at conclusions that at what stage/ level delay took place & then punish the concerned for contempt of SC order even if they at highest level.

SBI Chairman has been given extension beyond his period of retirement just for this day.
The Supreme Court should send the Chairman of SBI on leave and appoint some other efficient officer to complete the process within a week or so.

This morning I had a hearty laugh reading about SBI petition in papers. Anybody, who has worked in such an office, will know it is a 2 hrs job. Even if information is in 45000 different pockets all over India, it can still be collated in 2 days. I had thought SC will be naive to accept SBI contention. Justice Gupta hit on the head of nail in the very 1st sentence. Moreover, Justice Gupta added another input that SBI was earlier asked to keep info ready / handy. If SBI thought 3 weeks was less time, they should have approached as soon as judgement came, not now In such a scenario, SC should initiate contempt proceedings to safeguard its reputation. Otherwise, every body will start coming to SC at last minute just like SEBI came earlier in Adani case.

The delay in submission itself shows that there is something fishy. Imagine if the congress had been in power in the place of BJP what would have happened to the reply from SBI. It's a blatant contempt of the Supreme Court. Especially if they had told the SBI to keep the necessary information ready, as then it's obvious without a shadow of a doubt that that earlier order has not been complied with. Further, any banking institution anywhere in the world always keeps it's data base upgraded. It's foolish to believe that the SBI hasn't done so. Therefore, it's a lie and the top brass of the SBI must answer and take responsibility.

If State Bank of India cannot prepare the list of 22000 subscribers to Electoral Bond and submit it to the Election Commission with in a period of three weeks,how they are going to finalise the Bank's Income and Expenditure account and Balance sheet as on 31st of March 2024 with all connected list of all NPA accounts and other statements and present it before A G Meeting with in a short period of say three or four months to comly with statutory requirements. Perhaps,I think State Bank of India may not this year finalise their Balancce sheet on the plea that it is a voluminous work and hence not possible to be completed within next one year to save it's face in the context that it is not presenting the list of electoral bond subscribers to E C.If they finalise and publish their duly audited Balance sheet within a short period, definitely Supreme Court would make the Managing director accountable for not complying with it's directive.

SBI has the audacity to deceive the people of India, including the learned judges of the Supreme Court! Previously, when SEBI was assigned to investigate the questionable business dealings of Adani, they too requested an extension. After significant delays, the matter was settled in favor of Adani. No department has been known to act against the interests of the Modi govt. SBI will do whatever it has been asked to do by the Modi govt. and I don't think anything is going to come off the case. It is absolutely ridiculous on the part of the SBI asking for time to furnish the required information (which shouldn't take more than a few minutes). Even the SC may keep mum, or dilly-dally in a way that amounts to granting the Modi govt. whatever it wants. Haven't we seen what has been happening all these past months?
SC also delayed its judgment by keeping it reserved for sometime. However, this is not an excuse for SBI for which SBI Chairman will have to pay a huge penalty and he has become a scapegoat.

This is how public system works and public accept it. 1) Information which SBI should be ready with always, they didn't 2) Information which SBI should submit, they are not going to do it. Was this optional or mandatory for SBI? Doesn't failing to submit report in time claim stringent punishment? What kind of response from SBI is this? Yes, it is a test of SC. People who are powerless or moneyless fear SC, else doesn't care SC.
