    In all seriousness, after beating Elden Ring I immediately started playing the first Dark Souls and Bloodborne simultaneously. To say I’m hooked is an understatement. Elden Ring really was a gateway into complete From Software nuttery for me.

      Good decision because while Elden Ring is incredible and it has the best exploration/discovery of all their games, their older games does other things even better. In my perspective, Dark Souls 1 has the best world level design, Bloodborne has the best lore and atmosphere and Sekiro has the best combat mechanics

    My favorite experience about Elden Ring in a few steps:
    1. I bought Elden Ring
    2. I played Elden Ring
    3. There is no 3.
    I bought a FULL, FINISHED game. And then I played it, without paying for a single extra DLC or cosmetic.

    "This game reminded me why I love gaming"
    That right there is exactly how I feel, and it feels amazing.
    I've been a gamer for around 20 years, I bought a new gaming PC a few months ago after a long break and I felt like I kind of wasted my money, unsure if games stopped being good or I just became a salty old person.
    Then this game destroyed every aspect of stability and responsibility in my life and it felt amazing, haven't been this invested in a video game since FC3 I think.

      I agree, i think the last game that held my attention like this was probably dragon age: origins. Oh, the mass effect games were fun, and I can't say I hated dragon age inquisition or the witcher 3... i enjoyed cyberpunk 2077; red dead redemption 2, and GTA5... but none of them really pulled me in like dragon age origins, or even StarWars Knights of the Old Republic back on the origional xbox. When you have to turn the clock back 15-20 years to find a game this good there is something wrong with gaming. Elder Scrolls games always were a miss with me (I did enjoy 3 and 4, skyrim oddly enough was not my bag of tea), no MMOs grabbed my attention since City of Heroes, though i have enjoyed FF14 at times.
      But yeah. this game is something special. Easily the best game i've played in a decade... maybe 2.

    100% agree on the co op “dance” for Malenia.
    I spent 2 hours trying to beat her solo with my glass cannon mage boi, then realized my wife was upstairs and you know, I’d like to keep her around. So I summoned 2 people and we took turns aggro’ing Malenia and ultimately killing her. It was a top 3 moment I had during my first playthrough.
    I went back and soloed her with my STR build to make sure my gamer cock was still intact. But that first co op experience was great.

      I tried to play RDR2 for the first time after 2 months of playing Elden Ring, and omfg, the hand holding and nagging is insufferable.
      I heard RDR2 was a great game but I never got to give it a shot. I'm glad I did, and I still enjoy it for what it is, but I could really do without the game interrupting me every 30 seconds to either remind me where to go, or straight up railroad me, at least in the first probably 15 hours or so. The amount of time spent on tutorials in RDR2 was insulting compared to Elden Ring's 5 minute tutorial. Perhaps the developers thought this was needed due to RDR2's needlessly complicated controls, and sure, Elden Ring's controls can take some time to get used to, but once you do, they are straightforward, to the point, and predictable, unlike RDR2 where half the time the inputs just feel nonsensical.

    When I started playing and and realising how it plays in practice, I got NES flashbacks. Surely, not for the graphics, sounds or gameplay. But the feeling of the game. There progression, the trial and error aspect, the great satisfaction when I beat a boss after many tries. No in-game purchases, no handholding, no immersion breaking things. It's 99.9% gameplay, fun, pain, frustration, and satisfaction. Just like the old times! This feels like an actual game!

    • @psterud
      @psterud 2 роки тому +3

      Exactly. I'm an old-timer. From's stuff is directly inspired by old games, back when they were challenging. In fact, you'll see a lot of the same weapons in a game like Symphony of the Night, for one. They like to pay honest and clear homage to those great early games.

    • @TheJeremyKentBGross

      My break though came a long time ago when I realized I needed to play one of the old ones (either Demons Souls or Dark Souls 1) like Dragon Warrior on the NES. That game will let you go anywhere, but you better not because encounters get harder the further out you go from the castle and you needed to push the edges cautiously.

    I heard great things, so I purchased the game without any further research. I had only ever played DS1 (never completed, sadly). The moment i picked this game up, i knew. 170hrs in and finally beat it, and now im learning i missed so much - and this is only one character! The creative direction of this game far surpasses any game I've ever played outside other Soulsborne games. I mean, it has incredibly large and gorgeous zones/vistas, intricate zone/dungeon layouts, weird and creepy enemy design, completely Epic boss encounters, an overall haunting atmosphere, and despite the story line being somewhat simple, yet cryptic, I feel completely immersed in this world thanks to the intricate details found in zone architecture, item details, weapons/armor, consumables, etc. (and yes, even the difficulty adds to the immersion). Like, it just all comes together to create a truly immersive and epic experience.

    I love it. I actually quit, turned it in, and got talked into buying it again. First dark souls type game (no, it's not nearly Dark Souls tough), as a fighter.
    Then I took on Astrologer. After N+3, I did a faith/arcane build to N+2. Then back to Bandit dagger arcane N+1. Now...back to fighter. And yes, at 190, having fun fighting Millenia without a bleed build.
    My sister, who I bought the game for on Xbox, broke a controller, headset, and never left the beginning area near the Church of Elleh. It's about get Gud (watch Viva la dirt league for reference, not the trolls).

    That opening had me laughing out loud in several spots. When you die it deletes the game and you have to reprogram it. Good stuff. I've been playing for 200 plus hours and I'm not even halfway through the story, my health bar could give yours a run for the money. Praise the grind.

    • @fcold9402
      @fcold9402 2 роки тому +1

      Thing is, it doesn't even feel like grinding. I am 300 hours in and yeah i killed the giant and could walk up there and progress the story but naw i went to explore the Haligtree (sp) and then i was like I wonder if i missed anything in altus (sure enough i found a cave and some outside world bosses i missed or avoided and forgot about) and I KNOW i missed stuff in the some areas as i made a mad dash for the maps, so have to go back there and ride around exploring and no doubt leveling. I will take as long as it takes to be satisfied then will go to that mountaintop and i think there is at least 1/4 more of then main story after that, could be wrong, that could be near the end, that is why i am avoiding it.

  • @reapermort99

    I think people who want others to finish the game solo without "cheap methods, summons, spirits" want people to experience what they felt when they accomplished those things. They just have a disconnect on 1. how to vocalize that 2. understanding that your experience doesn't have to be everyones. I enjoyed the game doing everything alone, I only figured out how to even summon on my second playthrough (i've played every FS game and i still was dumbfounded by the mechanic lmao), but I don't think we should impose the way we enjoy the game unto others.
    As for invaders, I don't think we'd agree on that but I think that's the point. Invaders should be considered part of the world, and part of everything that's trying to stop you from your end goal (also up until like RL 90, most helpful phantoms are overleveled and invaders are at an absurd disadvantage)
    I personally think the endgame is a bit weaker than bloodborne or dark souls 3, where BB had chalice dungeons and DS3's pvp was way more fleshed out with factions, and an actual reward to invaders/summons/aldrichs.

    • @tombloem1
      @tombloem1 2 роки тому +1

      The is so big so I think there just isn’t any end game yet. So much effort went to the game so probably also adding a proper end game would be crossing the border from a really highly invested game to absurd crazy land. I haven’t seen so far a full game that has so much content and investment in it. And I thought Breath of the Wild was boring…

    • @reapermort99
      @reapermort99 2 роки тому

      @@tombloem1 I agree with you 100%, but as pvp main I suffer a little bit of fatigue faster than someone who prefers PvE so in that sense I was being a bit biased in my opinion. As a whole it is complete, and on a blind playthrough the world by far surpasses anything FS has ever done before.

    I think the only problem I had with this game is the sense of exploration in second playthrough. Obviously you won't do everything a second time but in certain open world games I would still do a bunch of things but in my other playthrough I kinds just ignored 90% of the catacombs and went after bosses. This game is probably gonna stay in my top 5 favorite games of all time till the day I die.

    It's good to have you back Lee but I have to say: Beside all the stuff you mentioned (that I totally agree with, including even the Malenia/Melina thing), knowing the way you play the games I really expected you to spend as many hours staring at the game beautifulness in each scenarios as me and my friend did!

    Agree. The reason I play souls games is summoning. I played Dark Souls 3 all the way through with summoning on every boss. And I probably helped at least 100 other players on my way through. The most fun I've had with multiplayer in a game. Occassionally, I get "in the zone" and beat a boss on my first try. Alone. But mostly I die! Great review! The only issue with Elden Ring is that it is SO big, sometimes you can't find anyone to summon or get summoned.

    You earned a sub today. I wouldn't call the game hard, just punishing. The psychology of going for a rocket tag setup and pumping offensive stats like in the DS games is actively punished by scaling on weapons being a non-factor until a few refines in.
    The mechanics favor (and outright encourage) longer "innings" based on your flask recharging on clearing an area. This puts a bias on Endurance, Mind and Vigor due to them having a more frontloaded effect. Having gone in blind, as a naked f*** with a stick, I got much more mileage out of pumping vigor early on until I learned tells than I did on the second playthrough using nothing but Dex and choking out barely any additional damage.
    Elden Ring is honestly pretty easy compared to other Soulsborne titles, but the punishes are far more noticeable because the defensive bias is so frontloaded (not being able to augment armor and early armor being pretty damn durable, and getting such high Vig returns so early).
