I think it was swamp Ash that Fender stopped using, for other than Custom Shop guitars. Regular Ash is heavier so the body needs to be weight relieved, good wood to use on a Thinline.

Swamp ash is not a type of tree that’s the part of the tree trunk that’s closest to the ground where most of the water is there not growing in swamps ash bodies are not heavier than alder swamp ash is very heavy because the wood takes much longer to cure the same could be said about any of the woods guitar companies use the Sassafras bodies from the 50’ are very light I have one from 22 on an EJ stories guitar and it’s heavier than a les Paul probably about 9 lbs so swamp ash is just the part of the tree logs closest to the ground again I have 2 vintage guitars made from ash that are extremely light around 6 lbs there’s no such thing as swamp ash it’s just an expression guitar builders used!

I'm really happy to see there are still places in Eastern Kentucky where you can physically check out higher end instruments. I was extremely lucky to have Chris's Guitar As a kid in the late 90's, they were originally in Morehead but my location was a short lived side branch they had in Maysville. Very influential to my G.A.S. problem lol. Were exceptionally good to a 14 to 17 year old who was just starting out, let me play on the good stuff! They had a really good marketing strategy for pedals, had all the big body Danelectro effects hooked up to the Vibro King lol! And would use it to demo other effects too. Anyway I used to visit grandparent's not too far from yall in Paintsville, my step father went to high school with Trit at Jhonson County High. Anyway was thinking about all this as I'm kinda stuck in San Francisco these days lol, thinkin about my Appalachian life recently...
