  • So, if you’re in the market for a new USA Fender, chances are you’ll be asking yourself a few questions. Not content with convention, Fender recently tapped in to the contemporary vein with their brand new Ultra Luxe series, satisfying many guitarists with a taste for more sleek and modern designs and not-so-retro features, who will now be proud to finally adopt an instrument bearing the Fender name. For others, this is heresy, and nothing but the original designs should ever be tampered with, let alone released by the Big F. And, perhaps for most, there’s always the demand for something “in the middle” - a touch of retro home comfort, with a healthy dash of 70+ years worth of player-focused innovation.
Today, we’re going to attempt to answer as many of those questions as we can for you, by way of a full, in-depth USA Stratocaster range comparison. We’ve covered every model, from the entry-level Performer, to the latest Ultra Luxe, with the Original, Performer II & regular Ultra guitars taking the middle slots.
Every guitar you see featured in today’s video is available through our website, linked below. You will also have the luxury of picking the EXACT guitar you’d like to order.
So, let us know in the comments below which guitar resonates with you the most. Are you a dyed-in-the-wool Original player? Or do you like a taste of the hot-rodded Ultra life? Whichever way you stand, drop us a comment below!

I have had the exact same honey burst American performer model for the past two years, and completely love it! I am very "picky" about my guitars and since I've had it, I have never wished for anything more. To me it's perfect. The pickups with the grease bucket circuitry sounds great to my ears. The push-pull pot may be a little gimmicky to some, but I would rather have it then not. The satin neck is perfect for me and I suppose I would be fine with either the large or small headstock. I'm fine with the large and some say it has more sustain? I have always been a Fender strat guy and cannot recommend this guitar model any higher.
Wow, I really enjoyed your playing no matter which model!

21:21 the American Ultra is the evolution from the Fender Stratocaster Plus or Strat Plus that came out in 1987 (CBS sold Fender 1985).
Basically the evolution to the American Ultra went:
Strat Plus 1987 (the roller nut Strats with the first noiseless pickups by Lace)
American Deluxe 1998 first series (Fender Noiseless 1st gen) / 2004 second series (SCN) / 2010 third series (N3)
American Elite 2016 (Fender Noiseless 4th gen)
      American Ultra 2019 (Fender Noiseless)

The best Strat for me was a Squire Sonic series Hard Tail. Did a fret leveling job on it, changed the nut, tone pot, 2 pickups, screening of the cavities, spent 10 or so hours working on it. It plays like crazy, it has sweet tones with the True velvet pickups. And the total cost is the same as a Squire Classic Vibe and it's better than the out of the box Fender Mexican Starts.

Last year I set out to buy the most versatile Strat without going custom shop. I wanted something that could do it all and last just about a lifetime. I settled on the American Pro II HSS. Played all the ones mentioned here except the Ultra Luxe. It was just something about the neck and the V Mod single coils. The double tap humbucker in the bridge is pretty decent too.

I have an AVRI Custom Shop Strat and it's phenomenal and I have no problems with it fretting out at all. However, I also have a Jimmy Page Mirror Tele and they are GREEEEAT but it's also a vintage radius and it HAS started fretting out and I'm gonna have to take it for a really good setup to get that fixed. I mean Hendrix used a vintage radius and clearly he done some crazy bends. So it's possible to set them up to keep that from happening.

I've owned a Pro ii and a Custom shop '63. I ended up trading both as I just didn't get on with them after a bit. A friend of mine lent me his Performer, and it is my favorite of those 3. I do really like the Ultra, too, but the Performer feels and sounds as good as anything.
As for changing pickups to suit your tone, I've found that to be a losing battle. You're better off getting a different amp or trying another brand of guitar, IMO. It's difficult to try out the pickups before you install them, and the results are often underwhelming.

    • @masterquan4891
      @masterquan4891 2 місяці тому

Yes, it sound the best for warm tones, I have the Pro for 2016, the sound is about the same, very warm. I can't stand the sound of the Pro II or the ultra, they just are not warm. LUXE, yeah, that's a no as well. I still like the hum sound from the single coil as well. 50's sounds correct but just not my style, but if you are looking for vintage sound from the 50's it is near perfect.

I got the Performer because it felt the nicest in my hands.
Really love the big frets. I am playing mine with 8's and it just feels super delicate (something I am into).
I find it very interesting though that he likes the pickups so much. Personally I think they are lacking some low-end/mid-range that other strats have. Also not the biggest fan of the Greasebucket since I personally think Fenders really rely on the tone control to thicken things up and the Greasebucket just takes away the top end without making it sound "thicker". Again, personal preference!
Also on video the necks look very pale and give me Squier Affinity vibes. In reallife they don't! Don't know if mine already changed color because of sunlight or if its a video effect, but it definetely looks good in person!

Thank you for the informative video! Been trying to decide between fender, Gibson and now PRS is in the mix. They say PRS is a blend of both which is why some are navigating to the brand. I’m mainly home player, intermediate at best and wouldn’t plan on spending more than $1,500. Fender shape and style is probably the most comfortable for me.
Neck is important especially if they haven’t rounded off the fret edge. So, all bias aside, what direction would you recommend?

I just bought an ultra about an hour and half ago! I played lots of stats and telecaster in the store and the ultra just played the best. When I say that I mean my particular strat played the best and not necessarily the Ultra played the best. Today reminded me how valuable a good guitar shop is because all the strats played a little different. I played 3 ultras that were even the exact same color and they all played different. Putting your hands on the guitar matters sooooo much! I could order the exact same Ultra I bought today online and I may not like the way it plays when I get it!

Ps: this video confirmed for me that I’ve made the right decision, I bought an American Original 50’s this year, it’s such an amazing guitar! I even compared it to a few 50’s Customshop Strats and the only REALLY noticeable difference was the feel of a played in neck (CS) and a brand new neck. I liked the played in feel of the CS but did not like the schap V necks in combination with the 7,25 radius. I had an Classic 70’s strat with 7,25 radius and did not mind it at all but in combination with a hard V neck I didn’t like it. But the thick soft V of the American Original is amazing! Cheers!

I have an american standard since 1987, i had an "Elite" hss with S1 and noiseless 4, which i sold after a month cause noiseless are muddy, no spanking chiming strat tone, they seem "broken", and weak, now, along with the old american i bought a professional II hss, and is truly a real chiming and on face strat axe, though i found a not perfect crafted nut, ( with whammy second b string tends to blocks with that crappy "tic tic", everybody here knows what i'm talking about ), the humbucker is a real crispy type of pick up, different from any other humbucker ever heard, and it's great.

Nice vid. I am a huge Fender fan and have been playing a Fender guitar (and amp) on stage for over 40 years.
Though I love fender guitars, I have seen the changes they have gone through over the last ten years and to be honest, all these guitars you have shown are all basically the same in sound and feel save for one The American Original 50's Strat (although I do hate the 7.5 radius...and yes it still frets out) and for the most part it is a good guitar.
IMO, these days unless you are a beginning guitar player (then pick any one of the cheaper MIM strats it won't matter) your better off building your own parts-caster.
Over the years I have acquired many regular Fender strats (20-30) and have built and painted many parts-casters as well (15), and to me and many of my musician mates, my parts-caster strats not only feel, sound and play better than their counterparts, but they are also less than half the price of what I have paid for any one of them individually (and that's with decent pups and wiring harnesses). Even the MIM strats are becoming pricey.
I have ALWAYS loved Fender guitars and amps... I just wish they would keep the pro's in mind and at least have one or two strats in their yearly line-up (MIM is O.K.) that are somewhat affordable and had a decent radius, good pups and thicker necks, like the mid 60's C or like the neck used on the S.R.V. strat or even the soft V neck used on the Clapton strat and or the discontinued Classic player 50s Strat. Sorry for running on so long. Oh well, that's just my 2 cents worth. Peace

Had the Performer for past 2 years - it was frankly the best thing at the price range. Those pickups are really something special, creamy and juicy with enough treble and bass which I can't get it anywhere else. The push pull thing is nonsense but this series maybe on its last legs given the new Player Plus encroaching into this price point.

the performer honestly sounds beefier and more balanced overall than the professional ii. I absolutely loved its sound when I tried it. I find the pro ii really thin sounding. Maybe switching string gauges may change that. Performer has the superior pickups imo, so much so that I took the yosemite pickups and put them in my t-style and it sounds great

I settled on a Honeyburst American Performer. Comfortable to hold/play. Awesome natural resonance. Push/pull tone pot to bring in the neck pup. It doesn't advertise rolled fretboard edges, but they aren't sharp like my old Am Standard were. Then I plugged it in and it sounded like the tone I've been chasing in my head. Clean, they rival the Am Pro II and Ultra (IMO) but when you kick on a gain pedal, they shine! They blew away the sunburst Am Pro II I was leaning towards up until that moment.

Excellent video! Thanks for posting. I had a 1979 Strat for many years, which I sold when I got a telecaster. I now have a Squier CV 50s, which is a good guitar (and weighs next to nothing), but being built down to a price, its components are only just gig-worthy, the tremolo is uninspiring and the frets are wearing fairly quickly. So, I'd recommend a higher-spec Strat for gigging. I didn't like the tones from the noiseless pickups, compared to the more traditional single-coils. Also, I wonder how much influence the bridge mounting has on tone: I feel that six screw bridges have an indefinable edge over two-post bridges, in this respect.

The other issue is the way I play I am always hitting the Ultra’ and Elite’s volume pot but the necks with the compound radius are pretty wonderful.
